Anyone who doesn't is a heartless monster. She was an abused, angry, and sad little girl that Batman had to watch die. That's some heavy shit and is probably my favorite interpretation of Batman. He knows she's scared and hurting and dying and there's nothing he can do to save her. So he does the next heroic thing which is being with her so she's just a little bit less scared and just a little bit less angry as she dies. As much as I love comic books, a lot of people see Batman as an inhuman logic and fighting machine. This really showed he does what it takes to make to help people.

I remember Tim's breakdown. It hit me hard, but the death of ace was just so much worse somehow.
Both were children... But Tim had a chance to grow up and be a child on occasion with Batman, until joker tormented him. But ace... She never even had that. She never had parents she never had friends. She never had a childhood. The greatest kindness ever done in her entire life... Was for the big bad Batman to show compassion and kindness in her final moments. Staying by her side as a medical condition killed her.
That got me. Tim didn't deserve what the joker did. But at least he had something before that. For a time he had parents and lived a happy life. And then he had Bruce Wayne and Alfred. His ending was sad. But ace had nothing until the moment she died when someone finally treated her as a human. Not some weapon. Not an experiment. Not a hazard. A little girl, all alone and scared, about to die, and knowing no one either could, or would help her. And one man sat down with her. And he gave her even five minutes to know what it felt like to have someone realize she was a person too. And that's absolutely heartbreaking to me.

There were also two things that always got Batman in the DCAU ; kids and women.
Kids were obvious, he lost his own childhood when his parents died, women just was because he seen so many used and abused by men and women as Batman and as Bruce, he was acting a playboy. In most cases, the women were either trapped in their fate, fell in love with the villain, or just being taken advantage of and he hated that.

Bruce doesn't decline to answer because of anything he did, he stayed silent to protect Terry from a terrible truth about who he's really deaing with. Why didn't they put Dan Turpin's death on here? I mean seriously, his death was far sadder than Baby Doll by a long shot. I mean, Darkseid only killed him just to show how ruthless and cruel he is. Plus, his death was in honor of the king of comics himself, Jack Kirby the greatest comic book artist/ creator of all time who worked both for Marvel and DC, who died before the episode was made. At the end of the episode, there was a funeral at the end for him with Lex Luthor attending of all people. Plus, in the original airing The Fantastic Four, Nick Fury, and a few of the other Marvel characters he created along with an animated Stan Lee were also at the funeral. Superman was standing over his grave when he said somberly over sad music, ”Goodbye Old Friend, What the world needed wasn’t a Superman just a brave one.”

Agreed. Everything not only holds up upon rewatching as an adult, but so much of it gains an emotional or psychological weight that can easily sail over a child’s head. Like with ‘Mad Love,’ when Harley seems to be finally snapping out of the cycle of obsession and abuse under the Joker at the end of the episode, only for a single flower and a note to sweep her right back into the cycle again. It just hits different when you’re an adult watching it.

Dan Turpin's death was doubly sad because the episode was also a tribute to Jack Kirby, who had passed when they started making the episode. In the original version that aired, they put a bunch of Jack Kirby characters in the funeral scene like Nick Fury and the Fantastic Four. They also included several crew who worked on the show like Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, etc. But they had to change it in future versions of the episode because they didn't have the rights to the Marvel characters they put in the scene.

@OriginalTharios MCU is good for mindless action and funny moments. The DCAU does all that, but brings a lot more realism into the equation. They aren't afraid to ask F'd up questions and show situations where no one really wins (neither the heroes nor the villains). I can say this with zero doubt: if the DC live action movies were even a fraction as good as the animated stuff, the MCU would be in serious danger of going extinct.

The most emotional stuff in the DCAU for me is probably Dan Turpin, Phantasm ending, Starcrossed ending, and Legends. It's pretty heart wrenching. The villain was someone who lost everything and recreated it all only to have it turn on him. I've thought about it and the only way it makes sense is that the villain's creations turning on him when they should be powerless against him could only mean that he himself knew he was wrong deep down. Their was conflict going on within which allowed his creations to defeat him. He really defeated himself. The inner conflict and repressed guilt manifesting in the Justice Guild attacking him.
