  • Here's a clip of Buster our three legged cat. We adopted him in October 2013 from the Lost Dogs and Cats Home in Melbourne (Australia). His right front leg was crushed in an illegal 'snap-jaw' rabbit trap that had been set in a suburban area. After he was rescued by the local council and taken to the home his leg had to be amputated. He is a crazy little guy who greets you when you come home, chases tennis balls and water, and steals any chapsticks left lying around and plays with them. The clip is made from video that was shot in his first three months living with us. The music is by The Array Project. The clip was thrown together by the design agency that I work with.

This was very heartwarming and I sure needed it. My sweet 3 yr old cat had a freak accident and got her nerves under her arm injured and we are looking at an amputation exactly like Buster’s. I have been broken, and this has helped so much. Thank you!

Hi Stephanie, my apologies for a delayed response, I'm glad the clip gave you some reassurance about how cats can cope with a front amputation. Buster just got out there and did everything cats do and although it changed his agility n some areas he was just a normal cat in every other respect. he's nine this year so he is a mature boy and not as crazy playful as he is in this early video but he still gets up to heaps.

Such a cute video!!! Poor baby got in a snare... that is awful. My cat is getting right rear leg amputated. I hope she does as well. I’m worried she will be depressed as I would be if were me. Thank you so much for sharing

Thanks for your lovely comment. He's a great little cat, currently he is sleeping on my sports t-shirt that I left on the bed when I changed for a shower. Cats are very resilient especially if they are in a loving home and feel safe. If your cat is to have an amputation, once the surgery is all healed, I'm sure she will get right back at it like Buster has. Our experience has been they don't sit around feeling sorry about the loss they just get on with doing what comes naturally. Best of luck with her operation and recovery!

I just want to really thank you for posting this video... Our cat will be having his front right arm amputated tomorrow and I've been deeply worried about it affecting his life. This video gave me some peace of mind that it will all work out

Hi, I really hope the amputation all works out fine, I'm sure with good post-op care he'll back at it in no time. By the time we got Buster he was well into his recovery having been with a foster carer for about 6 weeks after the operation. He is now almost 2 years old but super active and the missing limb doesn't seem to slow him down much at all.

I have adopted two 3-legged kittens. They get along just fine on 3 legs.

+Daniel P Hanover Hi Daniel, I agree and it's amazing how they can adapt and just get back on with their lives.

+analogmoose I adopted a 3-legged male kitten in may, 2000 from a nice young lady in College Point, Queens. He was 5 months old and I named him "Calley". He was missing the lower half of his left rear leg. It didn't bother him at all for about 7 years. But after that it started causing him pain, so I took him to my vet, and my vet removed the top half of his leg. It took Calley only 1-1/2 days to fully recover, and then he was running around the house again as usual, and he was never bothered by it again. I adopted another 3-legged kitten last year and I named her "TianaBay!" (sic) :)

Thank you for this video of Buster. WOW, he looks happy. Tomorrow morning my 8 week old kitten is getting his right leg amputated. We just rescued him 5 days ago from under someone's pickup truck and both his legs where hurt. Your video made me feel much better, giving me and idea of my kittens future happiness.

Hi, I hope the operation works out. Is it the leg front of back? Animals can be really tough and once the limb has gone they just seem to adapt and get on with doing life again. Buster is even more super active now than in the clip. I'll have to post an updated clip as it has been a year now.

analogmoose it was the right front leg. He is doing great. He came home the day after surgery. He is playing, curious, and I am finally starting to see all kitten.

That's great news, it's amazing how fast they can start to recover. The only 2 things we've really noticed with Buster's missing limb is that he can't do the big face wash around his eye and ear on his right side and asks us to help; and after going to the toilet he sometimes still tries to use the little stump that is left to cover over the dirt and ends up getting in the dirt himself!

One of my boys is 6 weeks post back leg amputation due to "swimmers syndrome " I have 2 rag dolls -brothers (7months old)I'm a little worried about Brucey's progress after the operation coz I don't feel he's progressing like he should. .Ive taken him back to the vet and he says all looks fine .I I was hoping you could share what you did to get buster as happy and healthy as he is...Thanks for the video..

+Karren Joy Long Hi Karren, I don't know "swimmers syndrome" but actually I don't think we did anything very specific or special to help him get back up and playing again. When we got Buster he was about 6-8 weeks post operative and had already been with a foster carer arranged by the animal shelter/hospital that amputated his shattered leg. However, my understanding is that the back legs do take longer to heal and their whole back section needs to adjust to the change. Depending on how much was amputated eg: just the bottom of the leg or up to the thigh; ...but if it is up to the hip then it is a big loss and can effect their red blood cell supply as well which does mean slower healing back to normal activity. Buster spent the first week with us hiding under the bed in the study so that might be also considered an extra week in convalescence. I hope that helps and your boy gets back on his feet again safe and sound soon

Is he still alive? Or did you have to sadly put him down?

    • @analogmoose
      @analogmoose  8 лет назад +1

+Ioletsgo12345s SFM Sure is still alive! He's around 3 years old now and a fully active boy cat - admittedly he's been speyed so maybe not 'fully' active if you get my drift. I've been meaning to upload some of the current clips of him playing and mucking about so I'll do that over the next 2 weeks.

Well i believe in the advance in technology they can make like a robot leg for you're cat that i believe is thankful to be alive

A robot leg would be pretty cool :) ... but he doesn't really seem to be slowed down by only having three legs anyway!
