WARNING: Repairing your own cooking appliances can be dangerous. Repair at your own risk! I am not a repair professional.
I had a Power Airfryer XL (amzn.to/31PCcWZ) that stopped working in the middle of cooking. Thinking it was something simple like a fuse, I took it apart to find the issue. Turns out, the safety switch had broken, so I found a replacement part on Amazon (linked above) and switched out the switch. The metal leads on the replacement part were a little too small, but by shoving aluminum foil into the wire connectors, I was able to get a snug fit without any soldering, and that did the trick! Speaking of which, did I mention I'm not a repair professional? Any repairs you do are your responsibility!
Let me know if you find a better replacement switch! I'm sure there's something cheaper out there too. If searching, look for "SZM-C16-FC-63". "FA", seems to have the small leads. "FD" might work too.
UPDATE: I found a replacement with the correct lead size and have updated the link: amzn.to/3hiJ84E or amzn.to/3bawEZU

Hello and thank you for this video! I wanted to let you know that I think the Whirlpool brand is more like the original switch. I'm possibly gonna try it.
@@cheryljonestwin Thanks! Please keep me posted. If you send me a link to the Whirlpool one you're using, I'll try it out too.

Hey Hey! It may be possible to fix your unit for $0!! I just followed the instructions to take my unit apart - and once I got access to my safety switch gizmo, I plugged in my unit to see if I could get the thing to run while my finger was firmly pressing the button - and she started right up! The little lever that the fryer tray presses into the switch just wasn't pressing it hard enough. I just took some tin foil, and wrapped it real good around the button on that safety switch (while my finger was firmly pressing it) - and now I can open the unit without the thing turning off lolololol. If I want it to stop cooking I'll just unplug it, simple enough. We'll see how this affects the switch down the road, I've got a couple more I ordered so I'm not too worried about it. Best of luck to you all and your beloved fryers!
BrassMonkery,
I just had to write and thank you for saving me so much money. I order the switch and replaced it in a short time. My air fryer is working perfectly. I can't thank you enough for sharing this fix. Many thanks, Brenda
You're welcome! Glad to keep the appliance out of the garbage. Enjoy those tots!
I was in the middle of making corn dogs when I realized the blower was not turning off when I pulled out the tray. We continued to use the air fryer because “ it still worked”, but decided to search the problem and came across your video. Thank you for your video and all my future quick meals.
Thank you so much! The rude ass customer service rep said “it’s broken, you’ll need to buy another one” and hung up on me! so thank you sir for this awesome video!
My Power XL died yesterday. Ordered switch and back up and working today. Thanks for the video!!!!!
Time to show those tots who's boss!

I have the same air fryer brand as you do. Did you also purchase the switch on Amazon?
@@dustinbowen5962 I did
Where do I order the switch from?
thanks for this! I was about to chunk mine in the lake when I found this. I ordered the part from your link from Amazon. Two pack for $8. I had it replaced and some wings in the air fryer in about 5 min. You're the man!!
Anytime you need a wing man, I'll be here!
Just put in my new switch that I ordered from your Amazon link. It's alive!!! Thanks so much for the video - I would have just thrown it away!
Cool! I wasn't sure if anyone would ever watch this video when I made it, but it's been pretty awesome to hear that it's helped avoid some electronics going to the dump. Enjoy the tots!
Thank you! I thought I burned up our first air fryer but couldn't bear to throw it out. When the second air fryer stopped working, I found your video. I ordered a two-pack of the part and now BOTH work for only $7!
Glad I could help!
@@brassmonkery6222 how about air fryer flashing, blinking
The best video. Saved me $95. The replacement switch I bought is $4.99 on amazon. It is the one with the little red Safety button. I found is by searching k-16 switch. Some air fryer bottoms come off easier than others. Mine after removing the screws I had to be very forceful with a flathead to pry open to gain access to switch. Only thing I would change on the video is don’t use tinfoil. Take your pliers and slightly crimp the two ends coming out of the fryer that slide onto the switch before sliding them on. The new switch leads are slightly smaller and will slide right off. I also used electrical tape after I got them securely on just to be on safe side. Good luck and this is the first video I have ever responded to as this guy actually permanently fixes the problem. Thank u.
Agreed, the most important thing is that there is a secure connection, otherwise the connection could get too hot and be a safety hazard.
THANK YOU so much for posting this video, my air fryer (same model) stopped working in the middle of operation tonight. IT WAS THIS SWITCH!!
instead of ordering a new one i popped opened the switch itself and saw the mechanical motion of the button press was no longer completing the circuit, so i bent the metal inside slightly with pliers so that it would again (and not too bent so the switch would still deactivate when the button is not pressed) up i'm back up and cooking with normal tray on/off functionality! again thank you for the video, i never would have guessed its the switch! have a fantastical day :D
I just fixed my airfryer thanks to this guide. A TIP for opening the clamp is in between the bottom of the clamp where you feel there is a gap in the middle. At the end of that middle is a small latch that if you press down, it will release the clamp. I only knew this because the heat ripped away the material of the chord connected to the box.
Interesting, mine doesn't have a clamp. Must be different models. Hopefully that will help others. Thanks for sharing!
My airfryer suddenly stopped working and I tried everything. My warranty ended and i've only had it for 3 months. I came across your video and thought to give it one last try. Luckily I didn't need to buy a replacement switch, but one of my wires came loose from its wrapping, sealed it up and it's working again! Thanks a lot.
Awesome detective work!
Isn't it crazy. I spent 100$ on this airfryer for it to only have a 60 day warranty.
what did you seal it up with? electral tape? Sorry for asking, I'm a noob lol
@@Hughjasslol1 I used colored electrical tape !
Thanks a lot man. You saved me from buying a new machine. I was able to fix this within 30 mins.
Woot! Long live the tot maker!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Mine has stopped working while frying my wings. I was so sad /mad /angry and almost tossed the machine out until I came across your post. It's fixed and worked wonderfully now. You have saved me from buying a new one. Back to cooking more wings. :)
Glad to help! You know, you remind me of an old saying: "Every time the air fryer dings an angel gets her wings!"
Had the same issue with mine today. Instead of buying a new switch, I took the cover off and removed the 2 screws that hold the micro switch in place. I removed the cover of the micro switch and the re-shaped the spade connections inside the switch housing and it works now with no issues. The Normally Open contacts were not making the electrical connection when the basket was inserted to the air fryer. Simple fix for anyone that is handy if you run into this issue.
I have the same air fryer shown in the video. Mine turns on and runs but the element won't heat. The element looks fine. Can the element be bad without showing any signs of being burnt?
It's possible, but I'd guess that there is a bad connection to the heating element or a burnt fuse. I haven't found a fuse yet, so can't help unfortunately.
I have the AF161 model. Removing just the phillips head wasnt enough to access the switch there are also some fasteners that use a triangle shaped bit
Thank you for this video. You made it very easy to switch out the part. Thank you for linking the part in the description. Got it all fixed up and and cooking again.
Thank you so much! my fryer stopped working and we almost got rid of it but this made it work again! I didn’t realize how much we relied on the fryer until it was almost gone!
Glad you held on and gave it another shot!
I think you're right about the quality of the switch, same thing just happened to me after only 9 months
Mine also stopped working in the middle of cooking. Your video was one of the only troubleshooting guides I could find and I'm almost positive it's the same issue. I'll let you know if it works for me too!
Just installed the switch you recommended and it fixed my air fryer! Thanks again for the video, saved me a ton of time!
Did you use aluminum foil on it too ?
@@bossqueen100 Other viewers have found switches that fit better. I'll be updating the video description and adding a comment with links to those soon.
BrassMonkery okay thanks for letting me know . I’ll wait for that then
@@bossqueen100 I didn't need to use foil, I was able to use pliers and make a secure connection with the switch.
How awesome this was . I took a switch from an old microwave door, now it works like new. Thanks
Awesome indeed! Yea, I think it's a similar safety switch. Way to recycle and reuse!
Thanks for this. Mine had opposite problem, would continue running if I slid the basket out to check my food then eventually it quit working altogether. Just ordered the part, will be here in 2 days.
Best of luck!
My air fryer died and is acting exactly as your video. Going to find that part. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the video. Fixed my Power XL air fryer with the replacement switch in your link. Very easy.
Thanks so much for this - same problem, same solution. While waiting for the switch to come, I just shorted them together as I needed to get me fries on :D

Glad to know I helped save a tot-maker from the waste stream. Plenty of tot-making days to come!
Yes quality control....please thanks for sharing.
Hello how do I replace the black piece that you pushed to make it click
I like your video. My door switch is broken on my air fryer however my switch has 3 wires and this switch is for 2 wires. Tried to find 3 wire switch on amazon but dont see.
Thanks for your video. Finally ordered the part and now it works. So greatful.
Wooooot!!! Glad to hear it! One step closer to fixing world hunger ;)
What screw driver can I use to unscrew it? Thr Philips doesn’t fit because the air fryer screws only have three sides.
what size of a phillips is that? I don't want to strip any of the screws.
Hi, Mine just stopped cooking with the air. I will try a few of your suggestions to fix it. Thanks!
Sure, sounds like a different issue than the safety switch. For me, it wouldn't turn on at all. The fan motor probably broke or is no longer connected, would be my guess.
Thanks a lot for the advice. Worked great easy to replace. I squeezed the connection to make a tighter fit.
Cool! Yes, most important thing is that it is secure and snug so it doesn't become a safety hazard.
My PowerXL switch lasted 8 months. Thanks for the video. Worked perfectly.
Keep crankin' out them tots!
Hi I watched your video and I followed whatever u did the airfryer was working fine but the next day it turns off when I opened the door it was ok but when I push the pot it stop working
Hmmmm... maybe the connection with the metal connectors isn't good? or possibly it's a bad replacement switch? The general concept is that it's a safety switch, the idea is that by pushing the basket in, it presses the safety button of the switch (which allows electricity to flow) so that it's only on while the basket is inside. So, it either must not be properly pushing the button, or the electric current isn't able to flow through the switch (even when the button is pressed).
Thank you for the post. Just followed to the letter and all is once again right with the world.
Woohoo! Enjoy the tots!
You Are my New Hero!!!! Thank You so Much.
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this!!!!! Saved my air fryer!
Thank you for making this video! I had an old switch from my arcade cabinet and it worked! Thanks again.
How the heck do you get the cords off the switch? i tried everything and they won't budge. I even tried to pry them off with needle nose pliers and no luck. HELP!
It was really difficult for me too! I ended up using a flat head screwdriver to pry the clips open and then was finally able to pull it off. I had to use pliers to squash the clips back on the replacement. It's important that there's a good solid connection.
The screws on my Power XL aren't regular Phillip screws. What tool did you use ??
Mine were regular Phillip screws. Try googling for "security screwdriver set" to see if you can find one that matches. Like: amzn.to/3dG5RrD
Hi Where can I buy the switch, and do all airfryers model have the same switch or different I have the power XL
They might be different across models. Best to look and verify before purchasing, you can read the serial number on the part. The link to purchase the switch is in the video descripton. amzn.to/3hiJ84E

Glad you could fix it! Cheers!
What tool did you use to get the screws off.?
Just a regular Phillips screwdriver. See my response to your other comment.
Thanks for the video. I think that I have the same problem. Just as big of a problem is the type of screws that were used on my air fryer model. The looked like Allen keys, but that's not what they are. Via a different video where this same problem was fixed, someone told me that their unit had T10\Torx type screws. I had to order both the switch & that type of screw driver. I'm waiting to receive the parts. I will let y' all know what happened.
Thanks for sharing that info! Hoping for the best.
It seems to have worked out. The air fryer does turn on now. Just be careful when you remove the switch & try to take the lugs from the switch. Mines were very tight & the wiring snapped on me on one of the wires. Fortunately it was very close to where the lug goes onto the switch & I could still re-use that same lug.
I had the same screws they look like Alan keys but they are not it's it's a weird star shape.
@@cityofjoy2576 I think they're called Torx Screwdrivers & it's the #10 one in particular if I'm remembering correctly.
WHAT IS THE SCREW SIZE FOR THE BOTTOM?? HAVE TRIED STAR, ALLEN, METRIC......
Thank you! Fixed my air fryer with a $5 switch.
Did you add the aluminum foil ?
No need for the aluminum foil (it's not the best idea anyways). Here's the part with the correct lead size so you can just reconnect it with the existing connectors: amzn.to/3bawEZU
BrassMonkery thank you so much
Hiya! Mine just died and came across this, but can you describe what happened when yours stopped working? The fan on mine stopped and the display flickered a few times before it completely died so not 100% sure if it's the same issue/fix?
Mine just turned off and seemed like it wouldn't power on at all. One way you can test if it's the safety switch before buying a replacement is to remove the old switch and connect the wires directly together (while it's safely unplugged of course) then plug it back in and see if it turns on. If so, then it's the safety switch and you can buy a replacement. Or not, and just keep using it at your own risk.
Thanks so much! I also had success, very easy for this girl.
Enjoy those tots!
I have a Gourmia GAF575 air fryer, and I lookup from the seller at Amazon. However, How do I know that I need the switch "Normally Open" or "Normally close"? which one that I need? My issue is there is no power after I insert the pan fried into the compartment. Please help. Can I purchase use the one that you have?
You need "normally open" which means the device doesn't turn on unless the button is pressed, in this case, when the basket is inside the device which presses the button. Yes, the one linked in the description is "normally open" however I'm unfamiliar with your model, so you'd need to measure the dimensions to make sure it'd fit.
Thanks so much for the info. I got the part and fixed it within 30m....👍🏿
How do I fix the plastic seam of the bottom basket that is separating? 😭🙏
Hmmm, I haven't had that issue. Want to share a photo? Maybe I or other folks could think of solutions.
thanks for your videoit helped me a lot
The switch controls the power from the cord. When you open and shut the basket with it running it causes an arc across the contacts in the switch. It will last longer if you turn off before opening basket.
That's a pretty good theory. I noticed that a lot of current is running through that safety switch line, pretty sure they couldn't have designed it better but they went cheap.
awesome troubleshooting fams, mine just broke gonna test this tomorrow
Best of luck!
@@brassmonkery6222 Just fixed it right now! thanks again dude
Tony Tran did you use aluminum foil too ?
Hello what type of tool did you use to take the screws out
Just a standard phillips screwdriver
I ordered the part and it doesn't fit my air fryer they are all T130 and mine says T120. The little feet are too small... Any ideas where I can find one of those?
There's several links now as I keep having to update the links as they sell out. Can you send me the link to the one you purchased? All of my links in my description are T130, so that's an indication that the seller might have sent you the wrong part. But whether it's T130 or T120 isn't actually as important as whether it's a " SZM-V16-FC-63". Could you also send me the identifier of your part?

Are you sure it's safe touching that stuff even if it's unplugged ? My air fryer will turn on and does everything like if it's cooling but doesn't cook at all
I have 1 doing the exact same thing. The element looks fine but I guess it could still be bad. I don't know. Did u find a solution for yours yet?
If it's still on and it's not cooking then something is likely wrong with the heating element or it's connection. Replacing the safety switch like shown in the video will not solve that.
I just threw mine away in the trash and bought a new one lol
Mine eventually stopped heating as well, I made a video on how I fixed it and got it heating again: ruclips.net/video/T2g68JYi_mk/видео.html
I haven't power XL vortex air fryer it has no control panel or power button...how do you control the cooking time and temperature You
The lights and timer is working on my power xL, but not heating up, the basket is closed like its supposed to, what could be the problem?
Hey, I just started suffering the same issue and made a video on how I fixed my airfryer not heating up: ruclips.net/video/T2g68JYi_mk/видео.html
Mine broke the same way. Inside the switch the metal piece that pushes the red button out was broken. Very thin piece of metal. I fixed mine by bypassing the switch. If you put the 2 plugs together the fryer will work again. Just don't open it while it is on because it will stay on! Make sure you turn it off before pulling the tray out.
what do you mean by bypassing the switch?
Yes, doing so will bypass the safety shutoff and make it more dangerous to operate.
Would this work for the powerxl pro?
Probably? Just compare the switch to the one that's already in there.
Preciate it. This was the problem with mines bought a new switch and it works fine.
Sure thing! Glad it worked out for ya!
Just ordered the pack of two, second time changing out this part. They seem to only last a year or so.
I'm pretty sure the current flowing through that part is slightly higher than the rating. I haven't found any switches with a higher current rating that fit, but if you do, let me know!
Hi, did your airfryer power on at all? The cord is plugged in, but there is no power or lights on at all.
It did not, the only way to power it was to fix the broken switch. At your own risk, you can test if it's the switch by connecting the wires with a multimeter, or otherwise safely shorting them. The switch just connects and disconnects the wires in a safe fashion. Using the multimeter, you should see that current flows through the switch when the button is pressed.
when you buy the switch, make tha tit can handle a6A at 240/120v AC and look at the temperature it's rated for. Most switch is rated at 105C(T105). I found this switch from eBay. it's rated at 125C for $7.20

Ours quit working tonight right in the middle of fixing the kids fries and chicken tenders. I took it apart and the red button is not working, so i took the wires loose and touched them together(do this at your own risk). BINGO the fryer came on. Ordering my new switch as we speak from amazon.
Yea, doing so defeats the safety shutoff mechanism which makes it more dangerous to operate.
Thanks ! It worked.
HERE'S THE DEAL FOLKS. The switch is bad because the points inside are burnt. Use a single edge razor blade (BE CAREFUL TO NOT CUT YOURSELF) and seperate the two halves of the on/off push button assembly. The part that is protruding will fall out so be careful and watch not to lose it. Now take the point of a fairly sharp object and scrape the area clean on both surfaces that make contact. Reasemble and voila' it is fixed. May not last but the wife just expressed her gratitude. Called me McGyver.
It looked like you stuffed some aluminum foil into the female connector to make it fit tighter. This is not recommended. While it will work, the dissimilar metals will eventually create a resistance, create heat, and the connection deteriorate. You can use pliers instead to increase the grab of the female connectors. Or do similar to what you did but use solder on one side of the female connector - otherwise, Excellent!
any one have a part number for the thermo fuse?
I’m in need of the same part, I’m searching Amazon and I can’t find it... Did you type in anything pacific?
Looks like you found it! In case someone else does the same thing, here's the link again: amzn.to/2YtvW3D
I found it,Thank you
Appreciate this post. Prior to fixing the air fryer, were you getting an 'E1' message on it?
Nope, it wasn't powering on at all for me. I switched out the safety switch just so it would actually power up. 'E1' looks like an error message, which I'd assume is unrelated to the safety switch. I would try researching to see if that error message was common and if it had a common fix. Maybe their tech support would know?
I'm getting the e1 code too. It'll turn on for a minute until it beeps with the code and shuts off. Anyone else able to fix this particular issue?
If you pop the plastic top off the broken switch, the metal connectors come out easily without breaking them
Mine just died. At about 7 months:-( Not sure it is the switch yet. I get nothing when I plug it in, no LED or sound.
Sounds like it could potentially be the switch.
I cant get the old switch out 😭
UPDATE: I finally managed to yank the switch and replace it with the new one! However I can't assemble the air fryer back properly now.. and when I plugged it in there's a faint humming noise. Im kinda scared that I didn't repair it properly 😳 I don't want to cause a fire
Thanks for the video thkugh!
@2:52 .. that is way the safety switch broke. Slammed to put the bucket in. LOL
Haha, hmmm, good point.
Thanks so much man. It worked for me. Saved some $$$
Tot-ally awesome!
Thanks Brass Monkey, i was going to toss it out, i only had mine for a year also and it stopped working. TJ
Yea, no bueno. I love my air fryer, but I'm recommending my friends to buy higher quality ones.
I have the same air fryer and for some reason the heating element does not work. I can turn on the machine and I could hear the fan working but there's no heat at all. I don't what's wrong with it. :(
Hmmm that must be a different problem. The safety switch I replaced will keep the entire thing from turning on. I'd guess the heating element is broken or disconnected. I doubt it's a fuse, unless the heating element has it's own fuse and that happened to burn out.
@@brassmonkery6222 Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I guess it could be burned out. When I checked the heating element, I saw some oil grease on the metal plate. I took picture but I can't upload here. I'll keep searching on how to be able to fix it.
Mine stopped heating as well, so I made a video on how I fixed it, in case you still have yours: ruclips.net/video/T2g68JYi_mk/видео.html
my motor work but it want turn so not cooking right
I'd prefer to bypass the switch, if anyone knows how... Ours still works, but you have to slam the basket in a certain way. It's very annoying.
One can technically bypass it by connecting the two wires together, soldering the ends together for a good connection. Warning: the airfryer will stay on even when the basket is removed once the wires are permanently connected. Do so at your own risk.
I'm on my 3rd fix....🙄🙄
Ouch! The same part or different problems? I think part of the issue for the switch is that a lot of current flows through it (surprisingly), so you need to make sure you have a really good connection and perhaps look for a switch that's rated for a higher current.
Also stop opening basket with it running turn it off first
Some other viewers have recommended other switches, maybe give those a shot? I'll be updating the video description and adding a comment with links.
Disregard that post, i was too stupid not to finish looking at the link...
Haha, no problemo!
Mine broke after 4 months. I'm so disappointed.
Yea, I'm not happy with it. Let me know if you find a higher quality one that I can recommend to folks.
