  • How to test for standby voltage to determine if the problem is the power supply or main board.
CLICK HERE for Replacement Parts: www.shopjimmy.com/tvs
In this video we will show troubleshooting steps that will work for a plasma TV, LCD TV & LED TV. Troubleshooting in this video will apply to a TV that will not power on. So if your TV will not turn on, either with the remote or by pushing the power button on it, try these troubleshooting steps.
In these troubleshooting steps, we will use a multimeter to check for certain voltages. In order to continue troubleshooting, be sure you have the proper training, experience, skills and equipment necessary to use a multimeter to check voltages in a TV.
Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk.
Here we have an LED TV that will not turn on. The first thing that I can do is to check and see if there is a standby light in the front of the TV. Some TVs have the ability to show a standby light, while others do not. If I do see a standby light in the front of the TV, that shows that I do have some power going to the TV, but it will just not turn on.
    We will continue troubleshooting.
I have removed the back cover off of the TV and I will use my meter to check the standby voltage on the power supply.
First identify the power supply in your TV. Then look for a cable that runs from the power supply to the main board.
Then you can look to see if the board has a legend on it, showing which pins show what voltages.
You will want to look for the one that shows the 5 volt standby. All boards are different, some will have a legend, some will not. Some will have the pin labeled and some won't. If your board does show what pin has 5 volt standby, then check that pin. If it does not show which one if the 5 volt standby, then you will want to check all of the pins on the cable, one at a time and look for one of them to show as 5 volts. As you can see, both pins 1 and 2 show our 5 volt standby. I will check pin 1. Be sure your TV is plugged in. After you check the pins, if you do have 5 volt standby, but your TV is not powering on, then I recommend replacing the main board.
If you do not have 5 volt standby, then you are not getting power from the power supply board. Assuming your outlet works, and the TV is plugged in correctly, I recommend replacing the power supply board.
A quick recap of our first step for troubleshooting the symptom of if your TV will not power on. If you check the 5 volt standby on the power supply, and your meter shows 5 volts, then your power supply is working, but the main board is not turning on the TV. So, I recommend replacing the main board. If you check for the 5 volt standby, and you do not receive 5 volts on your meter, then your TV is not receiving power and I recommend replacing the power supply.
This testing is a great place to start for troubleshooting these symptoms. In some rare cases, if you do have standby, and your TV will not power on, the problem could also be a component on the power supply board, however to start troubleshooting, it is recommended to replace the main board first.

Thank you so much for this educational video!!! By your multimeter test I needed a power supply board. Unfortunately the power supply board I needed wasn’t in stock on your website but I did find one on eBay and now my TV works again! No TV repairman costs at all since I was able to diagnose and fix myself. I’m in a debt of gratitude and will refer everyone possible to your website, videos, products...etc. Thanks!

Hi Jim, thank you very much for your video. I have a Sony Bravia 60" kd-60x690e TV that is five years old today. It turned itself off, and will not turn back on. No lights, nothing.
There was no surge. I removed the plug from the surge protector, and plugged it into the UPS, no change. I plugged it into the wall outlet, no change. I'm guessing a power supply board.
When I watched your video, I could not tell where you grounded the other probe. Obviously, touching one probe to a connection, and leaving the other one dangling will not complete a circuit for electricity to flow. Where did you ground the other probe?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
I like your service and commitment to help / guide the community to repair the TV.
I have a Sony TV - model KDL52XBR9. It has a blank screen - no video or audio or backlight. When I turn ON with Remote or Power button on the TV, just the Green Standby light comes on.
If I disconnect and connect the wall plug, I hear some rely clicking and the backlight comes on for about 45 sec and backlight turns off by it self. Green standby light remains ON till I power OFF.
Can you please help diagnose the issue?
    Thanks, Mohan

Hello Jimmy. Great video! I have a lg 55ln510, #310rmhr7b601 that will show picture for 30 sec and then the screen goes black. The standby light is on when tv is plugged in. I have checked the standby signal from pwr supply to main brd and get the listed value of 3.5V but I get a 0 for the 12v and the 24v pins. The pins for the wire going from pwr supply to led (+/- +/-) started at approx 13v and quickly dropped to 0 when tv plugged in but not turned on. No visible blown capacitors. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, I have a 32" Phillips flat screen T.V. - Model no. 32PFL5522D / 05 . All was fine until a few days ago when I went to turn it on via the remote and nothing happened. The standby light has never come back on when plugging into the power supply. Have tried all the usual tricks by checking the fuse in the plug, plugging T.V. into another socket in another room - no joy. I am about to take off the back of the T.V. and go through the steps as advised on your youtube commentary. It makes sense to do what you advise about checking the standby voltage etc. Just thought I would post this prior to starting the checking procedure in case anyone has any other types of advice before I start.
    Thanking you in anticipation
    Ian J.

I have an LG 42LD690 TV. The power light shows in standby and goes to a wavering red light when on button is depressed. I have checked the power rails to the control board and they are ok. What outputs can one expect from the other outputs to the LED's? At the moment there is zilch. I have no picture. What and where do you think the problem area is? Grateful for any advice. The TV is only 5 years old.

I have a Sanyo model DP42D23 TV. It has a new P.S. board with all voltages good at the cable coming from the Main board. But it still doesn't come on .There is no standby light that is on. I went to the other end of the ribbon cable from the P.S. Board to the other rf/tuner/line out/in board and all the power and gnd's are good to that point. The board number on the board from the P.S. is NO: PCB J 0995 D1 W46/13. Other numbers on the board are Z7L 305A 49. Not sure if that helps. The power on/off button doesn't turn it on either. I do fine voltage across the power button when press. But still nothing happens from that point on.
Do you think it's that board?

Hi Recently my LG 42 inch TV had backlight issue where video alone was not viable but that was too viable through flash light test. The service technician changed the back light LED after which the TV went to standby mode.
Initially he replaced the main board still it was in standby. Then he changed the power supply board. Still same issue . He change TCON board even the issue persist.
But finally when I asked him to change back all three to old board and when testing he was able to recieve supply to all boards. Which initially did not happen.
Now with all old boards and backlight alone changed the TV still stays in stand by mode.
I feel the technician is not having a sound knowledge on the issue and just like that he is saying the LED panel has to be changed.
With your experience do you have any idea on this issue.
Any small hint would be great full.
    Thank you.

Hi!! Thanks for those videos. They are helpful!! Well, I would appreciate if you can give me some advice about my problem.. I have my RCA LED TV wich after a thunderbolt won't turn on.
I checked it up and found in the cold section, just after the optocoupler, one component tag as R431 (SOT23 encapsulated) exploited and close to it there was this component tag as SBR10100CTB (I think it's a rectifier), this one was in short circuit. I replaced them but still my tv won't turn on. I can see after replace those components I have 12V in cold section and dc volt but I don't see the 5v for the processor and the other part of the mainboard. Any clues? The mainboard part is TP.MS3393.PB855

My Vizio LCD sometimes won’t power on. If I unplug and plug it back in, it will work for a while. Occasionally, it’ll turn off by itself while I watch, and I can usually just turn it back on. Also, if I haven’t used it for a few days, it sometimes won’t turn on. Unplug/replug seems to fix it as I described above. Power board failing?

Hello, I have a 12 month old vizio e48-c2 that will not power on (it began after a storm so, lightning is the primary suspect) I've removed the back panel and the components look like none I've seen on line. There is a small board at bottom center roughly 2x6 inches connected by a ribbon to a larger panel at 3 o'clock roughly 8x12 inches.. I can replace the the tv with a new one for $388. Can you tell me what the cost to repair might be? Is it possible that only a fuse is the culprit? Thank you.

Replacement board was only $12. I put it in and same results. I measured voltage at the power switch this time. The board that it came with had 0v. The replacement board put out 6.6 at the power switch. I'm corn-fused. What do those disparate voltages signify? It the power switch bad? I dressed as Uncle Fester last Halloween. first it would turn on and have a picture, then turn off. I got it to

The red LED is flashing 3 times in sequence. After trying to turn the tv on, the green led clicks off back to standby, red led, and changes to 7 blinks. This is repeated every time I unplug the direct power cord and re plug several
min.'s later.. I will test the volts from supply to main as shown in your video, but do I have any other problem I should know or worry about before I attempt to test or replace anything?

I have a VIZIO L37HDTV10A. The power light is yellow on the front when it is off and turns on to green when I hit the power button but the screen does not light up. The problem started a week ago when it took longer for the screen to appear and now it will not appear at all. Haven't done anything yet to the set but will take the back off soon. any hints. The video I watched here advised to check the pins for power if it is labeled. Any further help?

Hey bud. I have a vizio, the power does not want to come on sometimes, but when I unplug it and plug it back in it turns on, the other day I had to replace the fuse in the psb. I am wondering what is causing the fuse to blow and what is causing the the power cycle issue

I have a rca mod #led42c45rqd ser # 2505-ld42c45d100735. The picture would shut off but the sound still worked shut it down and restart and it would work again. Now it starts flashes on for a couple of seconds and turns off. I looked at all the capaciitors and did not see any that looked bad. I only see two boards power supply and main boards. Where would the T-con board be located?

My 50" Panasonic TV TC-P50U50 when plugged in the red led light is off. Pushing the power button on the remote will turn on the red led light but not screen or sound. The red led "does not blink". The remote will not shut down the TV or do anything, have to unplug to power down. I tested the power supply board (MPF6913B 1Z) at the output pins and no 5v standby voltage. Which is odd since I have the standby red led. So would it be the power supply board or would something be happening to my main board?

My Sharp Aquos picture went away when I changed channels. I had sound but no picture. I turned it off and on but then had nothing even after unplugging it.
On the front of the TV I have the OPC and Power lights flash together with the Power light flashing two more times before the sequence repeats.
I have tried several of the suggestions to push buttons to reset with no luck.
Inside on the Mainboard there is a light near number 20 and TP2003 label that flashes constantly until the TV cuts itself off. I exchanged the power board but no change. Should I replace the Mainboard? If that gives me a picture, will I need to do a reset procedure?

I power up the board by it self all all voltages are present. I have a Toshiba 40RV525U that will not turn on after sitting for 1/2 hour or more - or is cool. To turn it back on after it is cooled, you have to turn it on an off approximately 11 times. Once on, it functions perfectly. What's going on?

Hi there. Please HELP! Our TV is on the fritz and we need some advice before we can move forward! Our TV is a Sylvania (now Funai), model number LC407SS. The TV was turned off and then back on again and from that point, it was dreaded history. Long story, short, the TV will not power on at all, no stand by light, the TV makes sort of a high pitched buzzing noise. No back lights are present, either. We went through a couple of your videos about troubleshooting, but are at a loss on which part to go with first. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
