    I've loved and used Pentax gear professionally for over 35 years, and Kobie, I appreciate how hard you have worked to help us get the most out of our stuff! Having said that, the Pentax gear I have now (K-1 and K-3iii plus a lot of glass) is used only for some product, macro, and landscape work. For portraits, lifestyle, and any other work with people, it's Sony all the way. I know Pentax is trying, but they are many years and iterations away from developing their autofocus and subject/eye recognition systems to approach anything close to what brands like Sony are doing right now. With Sony, I select the autofocus parameters I want and just fire away. I never (ever) even think about the autofocus missing shots. Yes, I am a Pentaxian and will always be a fanboy (especially re: the K-1), so this is strictly business.

    Yeh, this was always an interesting one, where do you start lol...
    "Let's introduce Eye AF!..." (*mutters quietly under breath) "only under x, y and z conditions"). 🤣
    Ahh Pentax 🥰
    This is one of those things where lots of AF points can really help for Eye AF. For Fuji, 119 or 400+ AF points across the sensor really does help with the accuracy, but even Funji are still a bit sucky with the success rate. Their latest cameras (XH2/XT5) I think are pulling the wool over a lot of users 'eyes' (hehe). What seems improved the most is the live feedback on the screen of the TRACKING system, showing/recognising the eyes etc, boosting user confidence. HOWEVER... when actually committing to the shots (even with their newer better AF lenses) it looks like its not quite keeping up to the impressions you're giving on the back of the camera, with many shots soft and clearly out of focus. I think my XT4 would actually have similar keeper rates.
    Eye AF is a huge can of worms, implementation is important, togging it on and off easily, choosing the eye, and of course it actually working. Canon and Sony I think have high trust rates, unsure of Nikon, Panasonic and the rest. I get by ok but its not ideal with Fuji. For Pentax I think despite this feature being available... just put your own damn AF point over the eye... we have a joystick now after all and I think the success rate will be higher than adhering to the qualifying configs.
    Thanks for all your hardwork! 2023! Lets gooo!

    Hopefully Pentax will fill those black checkers to auto focus squares in the next future camera, and not in the next 5th camera. On one of your final points, DSLR's are all about focus and recompose for portraits. Mirrorless has a bizzillion auto focus points so there's no need to fucus and then recompose. But I do think that there is something new in the K3iii that compensates for focus recompose using the inbuilt gyro and it adjusts the focus a tad to keep the focus in focus when you "focus and recompose".

    I wish that Ricoh could clarify this issue, since it is not clearly documented in the manuals. It's really counterintuitive as jpeg image setting should have nothing to do with eye recognition, from a logical point of view. If there is a link, it should be clearly documented. I'd also like to see further testing with a tighter framing, where more focus points are available on the face, and maybe camera on tripod. In my (very unscientific) testing, there is an intrinsic inconsistency/unreliability/margin of error in eye detection, so that I have always been unable to discriminate that effect, from the effect of selecting picture style.

    My experience with the K3iii when Using AF S is for focusing on eyes the camera is looking for a highlight in the eye. If there is not a highlight it sees the eye as dark spot and nothing more. In looking at your images I couldn't tell if the highlight in both eyes were the result of a flash or they were there before taking the image? In using AF S with AF (the five points), if any of the five points sees an eye (with a highlight) it will pick glow red and use that spot to focus. I'll load up the latest firmware (1.70) and see if it changes anything. Thanks for the video. I used the same head when I was teaching myself flash. I found it very useful. Try getting a wig for the head. That helps also.

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  Год назад

      No flash was used. By using the 5 point AF array in AF.S all it does is enlarge the single AF point to include the whole area those 5 points take up. Subject recognition for eye detect AF ONLY works when using either Zone or full auto AF, as long as subject recognition is turned on in the menu.

    Happy New Year to you and yours. I have never looked into this custom image section of the menu. Isn't this for jpegs rather than raaw? In your video on the xsmall setting in autofocus, wouldn't that give you the accuracy you want on either eye?

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  Год назад

      Traditionally custom image only applied to jpegs but with the K-3 III subject recognition, the system needs full access to all available information so it should be set to auto so there's no user interference regarding the scene analysis. This is regardless of jpeg or raw and only applies if you have subject recognition on and are shooting in either full auto AF or Zone AF. The xs will give you the ability to aim the single AF point to an eye, but if the subject is moving, it makes it more difficult to do. With full auto and zone, you only need to aim the camera at the subject and fire away, as long as any part of the grid is over an eye, it'll work, even if the camera is still but the subject is moving.

      I tried the cuddly toy thing before because I was in the same position that you're in. It didn't really work well, hence why I got the mannequin head instead. The thing is, you have to make sure that one of the AF points in the grid in Zone AF is at the eye. It's not like a mirrorless camera where it's littered with AF points everywhere. • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  Год назад +1

      @@petkosmos Well, for the AF it makes sense. If it's not in "auto" the user is responsible for keeping the AF on the target and the camera will have no idea what the specific subject is. In "Auto" the camera can use the AE sensor, Image sensor, AF module to pick up the subject and from there go deeper to look for eyes etc. My guess is that the custom image auto is similar. It allows the AE (Auto Exposure) sensor to get a full grasp of the scene and apply the necessary adjustments based on what it sees and ties that info back to the AF system. AI/Deep learning requires full access to all available pieces of information, so everything should be "Auto" to allow the system to analyze all the info and do its thing.

    I've read a few times that pentax composition adjust can be used to give a similar effect to a tilt shift lens. Do you know how true this is and is it something you'd maybe like to cover in one of your videos? :)

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  Год назад +1

      I don't see composition adjustment being able to replicate a tilt shift lens. The reason is that a tilt shift lens will change the actual focal plane whereas composition adjustment will not (due to the limited degree of movement and physics since the sensor remains at the same distance from the lens). On a very basic level, composition adjustment can do very minor things a tilt shift lens can do (corrections to composition (up/down horizon, rotation, left and right position). But you'll never get the "toy" look or the effect of a tall building perspective that a tilt shift lens can pull off.

    • @badactress
      @badactress Год назад

      @@KobieMC wait! I could be wrong but hear me out! So if the building-falling-over effect is caused when you tilt the camera up to get the whole building in frame. If you then use composition adjust to move the image down in the frame, this would open up an area of sky above the building. You can now tilt the camera down a bit to match the original composition but now the camera isn't tilted up as much. It's closer to horizontal so less leaning-building effect. I think this might work.
      The results might be dramatic & game changing or so insignificant that you hardly notice but I think in principle you could say it is somewhat mimicking that one aspect of a tilt shift lens.
      Only one way to find out.. I need to go point my camera at a tall building this weekend!

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  Год назад

      Interesting, it might work but remember the sensor won't change the plane of perspective since the sensor doesn't swing out (top or bottom) and only moves up or down. A tilt shift lens technically swings when it's tilting.

  • @GODSPEEDseven

    I seriously would have had NO idea that subject recognition was tied-in to colour profiles. In my head, they are simply preset colour gradings, and that's it.
    From your previous video on autofocus, zones and moving subjects tracking, I've slowly been experimenting a little more on autofocus modes.
    The systems in our cameras have become so complex... The tiny manual covers everything with minimal detail / explanation.

    Poor Eddy, his beloved Fujifilm system released the XH2 and XT5 with the 40mp sensor and 50% + lenses are now obsolete. "It was a bad call Ripley, a bad call"! "Bad call, those lenses are dead Burke, don't you have any idea what you've done here!
    Some youtubers are testing their non-recommended and recommended lenses and versing them against 24mp, 26mp and 40mp, and they're finding that even some of the recommended lenses don't appear to be as sharp on the 40mp cameras as they are on 24mp and 26mp. But I believe its due to "Airy Disks" causing diffraction at all apertures. Yeah WOW! From 26 mp you need 14mp to get to 40mp which is a 35% increase, and more than half the Fuji lenses are falling apart.
    I watched the Christopher Frosts Sigma 105mm f/1.4 review recently (Its 4 a year old review), and it works on the Canon 6D 20mp, and on the Sony A7Rii 42mp, and his apsc Sony A5100 24mp which translates into 57mp for full frame, without a problem bar the corners of A7Rii with a touch more CA in the corners (Probably due to the adapter not properly shimmed). And those pixel densities are well over 100% greater.
    How is it that Fujifilm is making half its lenses and more OBSOLETE with Airy Disk failures already. Poor Eddy banking on Fujifilm, now he'll have to pony up more dough for better lenses. Fujifilm is just a gimmick system. Glad I got rid of that garbage last year. What a relief. Man, I'd HATE to be a fuji owner right now facing the prospect of all my lenses being obsolete and their used price about to take a huge nose dive. Ah the Fujifilm hype. The writing was on the wall when the XH1 came out and Fuji didn't Kaizen the firmware to make it the flagship. But now Fuji has 5 flagships that are all crippled in some way into "hybrids" and "semi-hybrids" and "mostly-photography-hybrid".
    I would have to describe my foray into Fujifilm as me being a "s**t head", and "What a crap system". I can't imagine what Fuji users are experiencing now. I know my Fuji gear would be up on Market place and Gumtree and Ebay, before the dingle-berries that still haven't caught on can buy it............. and I'd hurry before the "Dingle-berries" catch on. Because Fuji used prices are gonna tank big time!
    My commiserations to Fujifilm users who bought into the Fuji hype. RIP Fujifilm, I think you've shot yourself in the foot, and the bones are gone now, and you'll have a permanent limp!
    Now I can say FUJIFILM IS DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

      @@KobieMC Dude, I got into Fuji in 2014/2015 with an XA1 16mp with 16-50mm and 55-230mm kit lenses. Later I got a new 56mm 1.2 and picked up a used XE1. The XE1 was the most notorious model because of the slow refresh rate and the reviewer claimed "Nausea Inducing" panning and slow refresh rate of the screens in it, and all other mirrorless cameras. I got it because I was curious if it could make me feel sick which it never did. The high ISO on the XA1 and XE1 was like full frame Nikon 24mp, and thats mainly why I got it.
      I only learned later that it was in fact no different to a Pentax K-30 or K-50 because Fujifilm fudges its ISO: So ISO 200 is really ISO 100, and ISO 6400 is really ISO 3200. Its all tricks and mirrors with Fujifilm, I mean smoke and mirrors (Pardoning the pun twice there).
      Sharpness: The Fuji lenses test and review extremely sharp like most mirrorless system cameras. Like the kit lenses are super sharp pro level sharp, BUT have big problems and crippled.
      The 56mm 1.2 according to lens tip was @ f/1.2 40lpmm, and at the peak about f/4 or 5.6 was 72 or maybe more lpmm. I think there were a few fuji lenses that exceeded that........
      That being said that the mark 1 56mm 1.2 that achieved 70+lpmm cannot resolve on the 40 mega pixel sensor indicates that Obsolescence was most likely planned for the majority of Fuji's lenses. That is an extremely short lifespan for such a lens and many others.
      As far as I know and what I learned about airy disks, it looks like its the dreaded airy disk phenomenon.
      IMO Fuji has a lot of problems, and is no where near up to standard. If you recall The Cameravilles comparisons of Pentax, Fujifilm and Sony camera gear, Li kept concluding that build quality on Fuji gear was wonky as s*** compared Pentax and Sony. The Oompa-loompas working at Fujifilm can't design gear properly.
