Thought would do my front brake pads, take a few minutes. Hour plus later. My renegade, used, had a mix of capped studs and pretty much all stripped. Some solid capped acorns and others hollow. Right off the bat, get new nuts or studs. Come to think about it my old 99 WJ had that came issue and remember collecting lug nuts at pick and pull and got them free
Hm I’m just now learning about this problem. I have always had fords and have never had an issue. I even am in Kansas which is a salt state. Not sure why, but I rotate my tires all myself and don’t use power tools so maybe that’s why they haven’t broken.
I bought a Ford Escape. It had so many cheap parts I had to fix that I traded it for a GMC Sierra. I guess cost savings didn't work that time. Although they already had my money for the escape, never again.
got this problem with my mk7 ford fiesta 19mm socket wont fit the lug nuts im not going to wait until i get a puncture and be stranded at the roadside trying to get the wheel off, just ordered a set of aftermarket lug nuts and going to put them on asap what a stupid idea by ford
Lug nuts with caps were created as a safety feature and not cost cutting. Theoretically, if someone used the wrong lug nut length or over tightened it, the caps were supposed to break off due to the stud pushing it out.
I came out like a worrier with my aircat impact impact gun juice up on massive amount of air from my huge home air compressor in my home garage, I am about to look like a star now in the neighborhood with grandma car sitting in the drive way now!! Neighbors peeking out their windows looking to see what Superman is doing to save the day now, I couldn’t even take off the first nut with my impressive set up and brand spanking new air gun and set up!!! Hours later ……….I almost gave up, I’m sweating balls by now I had to go for my bolt extractor and breaker bar after rounding some off. Looking like a “wanna be mechanic” that’s creating more trouble rather than fixing anything and don’t know how to take off a tire at this point, neighbors must have been laughing their rare end off….. I was soooo frustrated
I know exactly how you feel. It's the bureatic red tape crap of manufacturing dollars getting by with cheap shortcuts for the sale of a vehicle that should have been a recall issue because at the expense of needing to change a tire quickly verses not being able to and still have to drive home when auto repair shops won't touch it
Thanks for this video! indeed these are a pain. I went to rescue my wife this afternoon to replace a punctured tire on her Chrysler Town & Country, and ran into these awful lug nuts. What was baffling to me is that the original wrench that comes with the car would not fit the nuts. I went to Walmart and bought a cross type wheel wrench that comes with 4 sizes (17mm, 19mm, 21mm and 22mm) and none of them fit! I had to use a hammer to force it in which damaged the awful caps. I don't know if they were originally 19mm and expanded over time, making it impossible to remove with 19mm or 21mm standard wheel wrench without damaging them. Can you share where you found the solid lug nuts? Thanks!
The millions in savings will amount to billions in lawsuits and lost car sales and dealer labor to remove and replace with new lug nuts so no savings plus a hit to company shares. Should of stuck with the better lug nuts to begin with. These executives IQs are always going lower but their pay always go up.
What is a good aftermarket solid lug nut for a 2016 chevy Silverado four wheel drive ? I want to slap the person who engineered these things and it’s probably the same engineer who designed plastic timing chain guides. Can you recommend a brand name for some good solid lug nuts or anyone on this channel recommend any ? I have no clue what to look for. Thank you

Why aren't these deemed a warranty fail and subject to recall, replacement by the manufacturer? They are not "fit for purpose"!

I ran into the same problem trying to help someone who had a flat tire on a Ford. The aftermarket lug nuts are much better.

The caps are usless they make changing a tire a real pain.

chisel out the outer chrome jacket with flat top, hammer and plier.... retain the actual lugs... use 18" socket afterwards....
