  • In this video, I discuss the issue with the Ford two piece Lugnuts design that eventually becomes a swollen lug nut. I also go over the parts and tools necessary to replace the Lugnuts easily. This issue has been around since 2010 when Ford decided to design a two piece lug nut causing many issues to Ford owners. I highly recommend replacing the Lugnuts before they become an issue. Below are links to parts and tools are used in this Video as well as the proper replacement Lugnuts for your application. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave something in the comment section. Thank you

When my wife brought her 2017 Ford Escape back from the dealer for service she told me they said she has swollen lug nuts and wanted $600 to change them. I laughed my ass off and said they’re full of shit. Then when I went out to check with my sockets…. Why would Ford do this?
Ordered the flip socket set and new lug nuts you recommended. Excellent video thank you!

Thanks for the great video!!! I ordered the tools similar to those you recommended, but for 2 of the 5 nuts on one wheel I ran into an unexpected issue... the outer nut "cover" actually stripped. So even if I could turn it, the actual solid nut below didn't turn anymore. So I used your "time-consuming" alternate process, and was able to get to the solid nut. This saved me a trip to the Ford dealer again!

Aaron, thanks for the video. I have a 2018 Edge. I just bought it last December. Had to have a tire patched and was told the nuts were swollen. I though it was a b.s. from the shop. Later looking at the carfax report saw the tires were either rotated or balanced every 2000 miles!!! It only has 25,000 miles on the vehicle!! Was extremely maintained, lucky me. I just ordered new set of Mcgard lugs. Thanks again for making sense of something I never heard of 👍

Your video was very helpful in showing the problem. After 7 tire rotations (I get them done every 10K miles) and numerous flat repairs, the nuts on my Ford were no longer serviceable. It was not corrosion, just the outer sleeves getting worn out by impact guns so that the 19mm socket would no longer fit. The tire store refused to do the latest rotation unless I paid an extra $75 plus materials to have them replace all the nuts. I found I was able to do this at home with normal hand tools. I bought a set of 1-piece nuts online. All but one of the old nuts came off by simply hammering a 3/4" socket about 1/4" onto the nut. That allowed me to unscrew them. Once you break the nut loose, leave it screwed on while you wiggle off the socket. If you hammer it too far on, it takes forever to get the socket back off. If you don't hammer enough you end up just damaging the sleeve even more. I found that about a 1/4" was the right amount. If you feel the socket starting to slip, stop and give it a couple more hammer blows, then try again. The first one I experimented with was badly damaged enough that I needed your chisel method to remove the sleeve, but all the others came off as described above. After that first one, all the rest were replaced in less than half an hour with no special tools.

I had a Chrysler with that kind of lug nut and I find it hard to believe they would ever use such a badly designed part on a vehicle! It is hard enough when some moron runs them on super tight and you just can't get the things off! My dad when he was alive had *nothing* nice to say to people who did those things!!! I had lug nuts on so tight that even with a long pipe and him jumping on it they still wouldn't move. We did everything we could too! On a different day we had a problem with one of those caps on the lug nuts. Who is the genius who thought of using those dumb things? I had them all replaced with solid and chromed lug nuts just to be rid of them once and for all! My only guess is some bean counter in accounting found they would save a nickel and suggested using those. That is a nickel extra I would have gladly paid for better lug nuts!!

No one has touched my 2016 F150 but the dealer techs. Seven years old and only has 41k miles. The ONLY thing ever to need repair/replacement was these lug nut. The dealer has rotated tires about six times since new. My service writer pointed out the problem after my last oil/filter change. Right before I went on a 2000 mile trip! I ordered new Gorilla nuts when I got home. Only then did I realize how bad the OEMs were. I was able to get a socket on only two out of 24 nuts.
It was time for a new set of Michelins so I let Discount Tires do the honors. But had I had a flat on a remote highway in West Texas on my tias trip, I’d have been dead in the water.
Shame on Ford for continuing to send out these defective lug nuts.

This could all be avoided if the mechanics at these dealerships would first MANUALLY loosen the lug nuts with a breaker bar before taking a pneumatic impact wrench to it. That's what's causing the expansion of the aluminum. The heat from the impact wrench. You ultimately end up paying for their screw ups. It's ridiculous.

I’ve been changing my own flats and brakes for 30 years.
I recently had to change my brakes for the first time on my 2017 F-150.
Was under service warranty before and tire shop put my tires on so I’ve never had to remove these wheels myself.
Well I guess I was the lucky one who got the swollen lugs.
I thought I was crazy when the stock tire iron didn’t fit.
Then after buying a bigger one I thought I was even crazier when I muscled my lug nut into a warped blob of metal!!!!!
    I knew I wasn’t that strong.
I had to hammer a flat head into it and pry off the shell.
I immediately replaced all 24 nuts (expensive!)
But all I could think of was being on the side of the road coming back from a river trip in the middle of the desert with my family and not being able to change a flat because of these crappy lugs.
Ford really let me down on this one.

A lot of Chrysler vehicles came with similar lug nuts for a long time and probably still do. I have seen how much trouble they cause! I had a 2002 Neon that had those terrible things on it from the factory and having had a similar Chrysler that had them, I knew I had to get rid of them soon. A local tire shop (less than 5 miles away) has good solid ones that don't have those caps. They are chromed and look good too. I realize that those stupid capped lug nuts were used for looks but really, there are much better lug nuts that won't cause problems. My solid ones were a dollar each and already far better than those things I had on it! When I found out they were just a dollar each, I told the man behind the counter to replace all of them. He knew why I was doing it too. In my opinion, those lug nuts with the thin metal cap should be banned and any vehicle that still has them should not pass inspection. We need to make it obvious that they need to stop using these awful things on our cars!!

The nuts on a 2016 Ranger were in even worse shape with the aluminium caps just spinning on top of the steel nuts. Decent technique. I drive my star wrench on with a mallet and unscrew the lug nut 75%. Wiggle the wrench off of the mess and then unscrew it by hand. Put new lug nut on and done.

Picked up a nail and thankfully was only 1 mile from home when the tire began to go flat. Drove gingerly home when I could not get the nuts off the wheel. Would really suck if I had to do this on the side of a busy highway. From know on I will have a hammer and screwdriver in my trunk.

I am leaving this am to get a state inspection from my dealer. Also "the works" oil change, which includes tire rotation. I have new one piece units waiting at dealers parts department. As I always expect a rip off I have left 4 messages to the service manager who has returned none of them. I cannot see how they could justify an extra charge for this. Checked my 2018 explorer this morning and the 19mm socket still slides on. This is p.m. The dealer charged me $120 for a set of one piece.

I just had new tires put on a 2018 and went to re-torque at 100 miles in the driveway and all my lug nuts are bad and 1 is spinning. Wish the tire shop would have said something…

UPDATE: Just got back from Ford dealer and they did not charge any more for labor for installing new nuts. Old ones were beat up from impact but VERY little separation. They had 4 rotations on them.

@@Hoodratliker It's predominantly Ford tho, i did a bunch of research and they all recommend to replace them with simple one-piece parts. And we did. Cost us 80$, still not a good look on Ford, and now my GF's 2013 Focus has other quality issues that my 2003 JDM subaru doesn't have. Let's face it Ford isnt know for quality, not anymore atleast

I read that a 19.5mm socket takes them right off. I'm going to verify very soon. I don't know that they're swelling. I think we are using the wrong size period, then messing the caps up.

If the nut underneath is a 19mm and snug, then it makes sense to try a 19.5mm socket.
Which is still stupid, but I didn't build the thing. 🤦🤷
