I had a constent problem with this bad designed lugs too. Everytime i went to the service at least one of my lug got screwed up. After the fifth one i had enough and went online to find something. I found a company in California who offered chrome steel set what is looks exactly like a factory but made out of steel. Obviously after a few times it will have surface rust but at least you can change your wheel on road side if you got a flat tire.
@@GTSamWell since Jaguar still keeps using their capped lugs, it seems like a never ending problem. I find it stupid because the water will gathering underneat the aluminium cap. I went to a tire shop for the complete lug change after i got them and the technician had to cut 2 or 3 out of 20 because of the hidden rust. He told me it was a wise move to change the entire set. I strongly recommend it to every one. The company name was la wheels you can find them online. They can help you out. I paid like a $150 for a whole set.
They are a similar set up with my Volvo V 50 , I spent one & a half hours trying to get the wheel nuts off , I broke my racket , bent two bars , but did get them off except for one nut , i renewed all the nuts and done away with the locking security nuts , to much trouble , the one I couldn't get off I phoned the tyre place up and took the car back for hem to get it off it took them 2 seconds with the right gear , so I'm investing in a new wrench and straight bar , angled ones are no good , you need a quality one and a decent jack , don't get caught out keep things simple .
Yeah these were crazy. The aluminum caps help nothing either. Think it's just a cheap attempt at making them look good. At least you got them all switched out, that's the important part!
Break off the cap. Get a a 1/2 inch drive 1 inch socket 12 point. Sledge hammer. Pound the socket onto the leftover stub and impact it out. Works perfect.
Addition: I've just bought a set of special size sockets 16.5 up to 21.5. The 19.5mm works like a charm on the swollen nuts. My set of extractor socket is of no help as the shitty nut caps are just turning around and the sockets don't have any steady surface to bite into, so I'll have to destroy the cap as well.
Ah a .5 difference socket. That's crazy though that we would have to get something so odd for something like this. The extractors might just grind off the caps haha.
@@GTSam In the end it was easier than I had thought. I just had to hammer the 19 mm socket onto the nut, then it worked. First I didn't want to do so because I don't want to destroy sockets, but it was no problem.
@@disdonc6012 yes, that's exactly it! Glad you got it! If you think about it, you have to squeeze it on there to fit around that so it squeezes on there.
Just use a GOOD impact wrench (I have an Ingersoll Rand). I'll guarantee these lug nuts won't be any problem. Not talking about the cap problem, though. I have this problem myself.
2017 XF here, 4 out of 5 lug nuts won’t come off, 3 are swollen, 19mm too small, 21mm too big. 1 spins and spins and won’t come off, seriously this is the worst, I keep telling my wife to get a different brand car, just recently dealt with water in her door and the emissions smell awful
@@GTSam20mm coming today. Hoping that works, if not i will have to resort to what you did and chisel the caps off. I bought new chrome lug nuts from eBay for like $30 I will be replacing all of these ones for sure, certainly couldn’t have this happen out on the road
@@PerkulatorTime good on those replacements! Ford and Jaguar are STILL using this design and recommend new lugs when they go bad like this. Had a few people in my life tell me about this situation but they didn't watch my video haha. How'd you make out with getting them off?

Good call! Even to this day, I still am having people talk to me about these on Jags and even other cars!

Right, those caps are tricky but even having an impact and trying to get them off then still will not fit or just spin.

Dang, that's some stuff! Happen to have a 20mm? If the emissions smell awful, try some cleaner in the gas to maybe clean the cats.

Possible. But the one I bought was a different, cheaper material.
Only brilliant Ford engineers think outside the box to design stupid crap like this
