- Welcome to GamingSins, where I nitpick the hell out of video games.
Well, it only took 5 years. But I finally got around to reviewing my GOTY for 2017. Impressive world building, excellent gameplay, great music, splendid level design. Horizon: Zero Dawn has quite a bit to offer and is certainly one of the better open world games I've played. But like all games, it's not without its flaws. So here they be.

No matter what anybody else says, for me, GCN will always be the true gamingsins channel.
I honestly haven’t found a second favorite. The most popular I see out there… just really isn’t good and I don’t get why they have the crowd they do. Even when I deadass disagree with GCN… I can at least respect it and maybe laugh too. Maybe. 😂

I can tell you Forbidden West did not get any better with that one. May have gotten worse actually. Also can we double the sin of that lack of Varl and Aloy relationship after Forbidden West? No triple it. It was a tease dammit. Especially when they played into that "only caring about the world" part as being a flaw of hers as being a fear of getting close to people after Rost.
28:38 - that’s what I thought when I first faced a rockbreaker, until I realized that shooting off their claws disables their ability to dig. That little detail saved so much of my sanity.
my strategy for rockbreakers is to climb on top of a large rock outcropping cuz then all they can do to you is fire rocks at you and can't use their burrowing attack which is the strongest. :D
I would love to see a Metroid Dread of RE: Village video next. Those are much shorter games and should be relatively easy to sin.

That being said, I disagree about the love with Rost. He clearly loves Aloy and does his best to separate himself from her and make her not care for him, knowing she was going to leave him the moment she says she's going to run the trials. His every action screamed love though his words were contrary. But he did everything so Aloy could grow up healthy and ready for the world while trying to give her as much as he could while following the rules. I would also argue that the matriarch hating her made sense as she feared a child born without a mother coming out of the mountain. As you said, they are a tribal society and would fear unknown things and while some may see it as a miracle by the goddess other may see it as a bad omen.
As for "designing Gaia properly in the first place", I'm just going to say that that is soooooo unlikely to be possible in the amount of time they had left. Life itself can be unpredictable and unexpected things would probably happen. There are variables that even Gaia may not have predicted that could screw everything over. I'm sure she does have an ability to correct small mistakes, but it ones on the first and second try I feel is highly likely as Gaia has to go through trial and error as it is impossible for humans to account for every variable in her programming, thus she was an AI to learn and adapt with each attempt, what humans could not physically do. I disagree with that sin.

Welcome back! This is my favorite channel because of your attention to detail, willingness to cover the entire game regardless of the length of the video, and you actually make points with defense. Another great video covering a game you love yet showing the flaws. Proving a game can be great with flaws and providing a contrast to games that suffer from their flaws. Sometimes people think being a critic means hating what you review. Thanks for proving that wrong! Greatly looking forward to the next one!

Good to see you are back after almost a year. I still would like to look forward for you finishing up Mass Effect: Andromeda.
I absolutely love this game. Played 300+ hours of it. The lore, the gameplay and the world is astonishing. But my only gripe with the game is the story of Rost. I would have loved if during HZD haad DLC about Rost's backstory cause imagine fighting machines with primitive equipment, no focus during the Red Raids.
Perfect to start the day with some gaming sins.

Ahhhhh, such a wonderful voice to hear after all this time! I'm actually surprised you didn't do a "Bonus Segment" with either Aloy having stupid conversations with everyone--ones that literally make you cringe--or each time the game forces you to turn around because of "going outside the borders" of the game (actually surprised you didn't include that in your original Sin Counter). Can't wait for the next one!

I understand that EWW videos won't be forever, however i'm going to make the most out of it. Despite me accepting the truth, if i do have one wish, it would be for you to tackle the Kingdom Hearts series.
The biggest issues with the game:
1. All living characters are dumb.
2. The character progression is garbage.
3. Not enough boss robots.

@@dchegu Yes. Every single one, including the Aloy.
The scientist dudes in the recordings were cool, despite the mild influence of "big brain" Hollywood tropes. But they could really sell that the world is ending.
The living characters are fundamentally stupid, tribal, and have no idea what's going on. And what's funny is that they tried adding racism to it, but in the PC climate they didn't actually dare commit to it, so every tribe is equally diverse, even though their population is too small for it, and instead they just hate each other for having mildly different clothing.
At least Aloy eventually figures out what's going on, but she is forcefully written to be a naive, excessively nice character. If this were Mass Effect, the end of each side quest would turn into a bloodbath...
@@janisir4529 did u play the game? Humans that came from the cradle facilities had to start civilization from scratch. They had no knowledge of the old world hence why their entire social structure, knowledge n prejudices are not the same continuation of the old world. So racism do exist in the game world but not as the old world define it. It's not because PC climate as u say. It would make no sense to have the people in the game to have the same prejudices as people they have no knowledge of.
They are stupid? With what? Carja can build towering cities, oseram can fashioned cannons from machine parts. So they're not stupid.
The tribes not knowing what's going on? Of course not, none of them can access the places n information that aloy can access. Hence the game.

That's a lousy explanation why the writers made an obvious parallel to racism, while trying to stay PC at the same time...
Well, as far as I can tell the city just spawned there. There is a big disconnect in how the NPCs were written, and what they supposedly built off screen.
Oh, and for the last objection: There is the Nora cult. They really didn't notice that the thing they worship is built the exact same way as the stuff from the old world?
If you don't have your next game to be sinned decided yet, may i suggest Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii or Definitive Edition), seeing how the third game's coming out this year

I always thought the reason for Aloy being stubborn in accepting help was because she bought in to being a messiah. That she is incapable of failure because it's her destiny to save the world. Having others along for the ride would only put them in unnecessary danger from her perspective.

42:47 - 43:29 From what I found out about Horizon: Forbidden West's DLC, Aloy is now a cannon lesbian...
And even though I'm a sucker for actual heterosexual relationships that actually build up over time or the friends to lovers trope, I was left utterly disappointed that Aloy and Varl didn't get together in the first game or the base game of the sequel.

42:51 I just want to address something here because it kind of annoyed me.
Spoilers for Horizon Forbidden West ahead, read at your own risk.
---
1: Some people are Ace and have no interest in relationships. Aloy has a lot of these characteristics, although it isn't definitively said if she's ace or not. Either way, it is shown several times in HZD that she has no interest in them much like her mother.
2: In Horizon Forbidden West, this is further expanded upon. Aloy deliberately avoids forming close relationships with people for her own reasons regarding the whole "saviour of the world" and "Don't have the time nor emotional openness". She pushes people away because she doesn't want them to get hurt or killed because of her.
3: Speaking from the perspective of a woman, SO OFTEN female protagonists in games are pushed to have relationships with another character in said game and it usually becomes a focal point that takes away from the actual plot. For once, allow a female protagonist to actually be the protagonist and not just an object of romantic desire. Not to mention, sometimes it just isn't necessary and doesn't add any significant substance to the plot line.

I also had a problem with the Shellwalker shield issue. You can use that now in Forbidden West but it's not the same. In fact most of the primary important Machine weapons or parts aren't usable as weapons for humans who travel as soldiers or hunters in the series. On top of that we should've probably had been able to get things like Rebreathers from destroying Snapmaws since they swim as they do as probably the only aquatic enemy in the series, besides those featured in HFW. And a lot more weapon types should've been present throughout the series based on someone's fighter type or tribe. Like how the Carja use swords and glaives/poleaxes I'm guessing taken from Grazers, Glinthawks and Lancehorns. But then you would think Oseram would use hammers made from other enemy types like Chargers, Bellowbacks and Sawtooths. And that Nora would generally use similar weapons harvested from machines in their area which would make for some character interesting weapons. Then there's also the Block feature you mentioned. That should actually be cqc 101, yet there's never a block function for Aloy when in melee combat 🤔. And even in HFW her physical attacks barely scratch any of the larger machines like Tramplers, Thunderjaws or the bear-like Frostclaw/Fireclaw. I couldn't even make much of a dent in the damn Leaplashers or Clawstriders. There's a lot to do but physical strength doesn't seem to really increase.
Gonna keep repeating this but: last of us 2 injustice 2 uncharted 3 and 4 mk11 Spider-Man miles morales ps4/ps5 twau completed
