  • I've done it.
    8 Months
    Over 450+ hours of replaying the entire trilogy
    917 total minutes of audio recording
    618,584 total frames in the video
    A video nearly 2 and a half hours long
    And it is complete.
    It is the game that started it all. The game that led me on this path to nitpick the flaws in video games. The game that is the reason for me being the cynical gamer I am today. And now, the definitive GamingSins video is here. I was originally gonna release this video back in August of 2018 to celebrate this channel's 5 year anniversary. But boy, am I sure glad I waited to get it done right. It's been quite a road. But hopefully, I can finally put this game behind me and move on to better things in life.

      @HERETIC GAMER447 naw that's pussy fan service. If that was the real endings it would have been in right away. They only put that in cuz so many people are so retarded they couldent figure out what was really going on. Control and synthesis is a lie. They already made that VARY clear in the games. They tossed the lore out for the crybabys. Trust me the reapers are liers killers and ego maniacs. Even the star child is just another vision of indoctrination.

      @shis1988 2 года назад +18

      So sadly I only got the LE, but here goes through the game's logic:
      Reapers are AI and they reasoned themselves into their solution based in their own algorithms. Most AI in fiction are always in a place where their thought processes doesn't allow alternatives. And like every single use of this trope, they turned on their creators because "they too were a problem".
      They "want" a solution they couldn't possibly do by themselves because of AI trope, so currently they're being petty. I guess.

    Here's a fun fact. In the codex entry for reaper weaknesses, it mentions that 4 dreadnoughts worth of firepower is enough to weaken a capital reaper's shields. Now, on Rannoch, Shepard uses the targeting laser to focus fire, and I quote, "the whole damn fleet" on the reaper. On top of the Heavy Fleet's firepower and actually having dreadnoughts, plus the Patrol Fleet, Admiral Raan will tell Shepard that the Civilian Fleet has actually been outfitted with cannons of equal strength to dreadnoughts. And yet, despite all of them being focused on that on reaper, it still requires the firing chamber be hit to actually do damage.

    Fun fact: the dark energy storyline was originally suppose to appear in ME3 and it would revolve around dark energy emitting from the galaxy’s core due to the overuse of mass effect relays that damage it. The reapers would reveal they cleanse the inhabitants of the galaxy ever thousands year when they become smart enough to discover and use the mass effect relays and the cycles were meant to drive them back to the primitive era to save the galaxy from being destroyed. You would then have to choose whether to cleanse the galaxy yourself or fight the reapers in the hopes you will find another way to prevent the galaxy from being destroyed

    • @Johanna-vr2qx
      @Johanna-vr2qx 4 года назад +70

      And this is around 1.000.000 times better than what we finally got in ME3

    • @HellsRaven4444
      @HellsRaven4444 4 года назад +46

      More than just that, another one of the earlier ideas that were dropped was that usage of Mass Effect tech increases Entropy of the universe. As you said, the Reapers were a safeguard, designed to stop the overuse of ME tech and extend the lifespan of the universe.
      For me I can easily see this storyline progressing to the final choice being something along the lines of either letting the Reapers continue the cycle to extend the lifespan of the universe or, fighting the Reapers, potentially winning and accelerating the end of the universe, OR, using the catalyst to destroy all ME tech and Eezo in the universe, essentially destroying the galactic civilisation of all forms of travel, isolating all colonies, and making FTL impossible.
      Taking the dark energy storyline further was the idea that the Reapers knew that the usage of ME tech was accelerating the Big Crunch (opposite Big Bang) and that the only way to stop it was with Biotics. But the Reapers themselves cannot use Biotics so they keep resetting civilisation in a unique form of Darwinism to accelerate the evolution of a species who has the perfect Biotics, both the Asari and the Protheans were close but still fail.

    • @fenrisvermundr2516
      @fenrisvermundr2516 4 года назад +24

      Now I fully understand why the writer felt the Dark Energy plot was going to be disappointing.
      The Stakes were too high. The first two games had Stakes but nothing like this.
      It would have basically ended with let the universe die earlier than it should, or let everyone you've come to care for die so the cycle can continue till the universe does finally end.

    Something to note about Thane vs Kai Leng is that Thane should've been able to kill Leng before he even knew he was there.
    Go back and watch the first time we see Thane in ME2, when he assassinates Nassana. There are 3 armed and armoured guards in the room plus Nassana, but Thane manages to kill all 4 four of them within 10 seconds of dropping out of his hiding place. He kills 1 human guard by snapping his neck, another human guard by punching him in the throat then the Asari guard and Nassana by shooting them.
    In ME3 Thane appears out of nowhere behind Kai Leng without anyone noticing, exactly like his entrance in ME2. So based on ME2 Thane instead of just pulling his gun on Leng and not even firing should've simply dropped down behind him (like he already presumably does) and snapped his neck; Leng does not even realise Thane is there until after his gun makes a noise as it unfolds, so there was absolutely no reason Thane couldn't have done to Leng what he did to a nameless grunt in ME2.

If I wanna replay this series I just pretend they never made this game so I can enjoy my own ending where extremely tough choices are made that result in: only one species surviving (the Asari for the genetic ability) and sent away along with samples of the other species; OR the Rachni, Krogan, and Turians sacrifice everything but allow what little remains to maybe rebuild; OR Cerberus being taken over by Shepard who leads humanity to victory, controlling the Reapers at the cost of everyone else; OR the galaxy is consumed by rivalry because of the Reapers, and the only hope is to give the next species in the cycle some sort of context in capsules; OR the Geth are able to bargain with the Reapers, agreeing to leave and search for/integrate other synthetic life in other galaxies, believing this to be the only way to prevent cyclical organic-inorganic destruction. I think those are all great endings that make sense with variations for how each species makes specific choices. Seriously fuck Bioware.

    I laughed so hard when Game of Thrones ended. Everybody and their mothers moaning and wailing about how bad the ending was. About how it was the worst ending to anything ever. In reality, I envied them. At least their ending didn't betray the themes and ideals the story established since day one. At least each character got a real ending, even if most were unsatisfying. At least it tried. As much as the Game of Thrones ending sucked, you can't say they didn't try. Mass Effect gets no such luxury. The entire ending is a spit in the face of every fan of the series. An rpg that built itself on the idea of player choice and consequences, in shaping your own story and having a real impact on how things turn out, ends with bringing every single player to the same conclusion. Absolutely nothing you do throughout all 3 games has any effect on where it takes you. No matter how hard you try, you will always arrive at the same destination. And as much as I applaud you GCN for your hard work that clearly shows in this video, going over all 1,571,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,005 things wrong with this game, none even come close to the giant middle finger that is the very most basic structure of the ending. Thank you! Was it Mac who decided to can the original ending and make a subplot main plot? The idea that dark energy...the mass effect itself...was destroying the galaxy was genius. After defeating the reapers, your choices could have altered the fate of the universe in how the races managed their resources to do the least amount of damage to the galaxy as possible lest they are doomed a la global warming. The weaker the alliances Shepard made, the less likely they are to survive post reapers. Save the Krogan or the rachni? You're fucked post war when the population boom hits. Even if they don't want to fight their element zero usage goes way up. Did you not save the council? Did you support Terra Firma? Now humanity becomes a big reason why the species won't stay together post war. There were so many ways they could have made our choices count in the REAL ending and they could have tied it into Andromeda with the scourge being the result for massive element zero usage (the remnant being what the reapers tried to prevent in the milky way). The end of the Andromeda series could have ended with a return to the Milky Way to help them fight the scourge with perhaps the Kett on their heels with a new species filled galaxy to add to their perfection. I could go on and on and the more I do, the sadder I become at the lost brillance that was cast aside because LeAkS.

He says that an expedition team was sent out to Ilos after the events of ME1. By the time the team found the VI program you found there it was permanently offline. Sooo... I have been seriously wondering why they could not just copy the VI program however they could and build a Black Ops base somewhere hidden so they could rebuild a suitable power supply for the Ilos VI program to properly run again. This way confirmation about literally everything you had done in ME1. This would of been confirmation to the Council as well. Which would force them to begin making preparations for an Extinction Level War necessary. Sure, it would suck for the trillions upon trillions of the spacefaring galactic species in the six years over the course of the trilogy, but when you are facing a galaxy wide extinction level threat money is no longer an object, the survival of your species becomes top priority for the foreseeable future.

    I know the writing suffered in the last game, and the ending sounds like it was made up in an afternoon by a freshman philosophy major, but I still love this game for its character moments. Mordin’s sacrifice, Tali seeing her home, Liara bonding with Shepard with the time capsule, the between mission banter that regularly offered new tidbits from the people you’ve become so invested in., etc. It’s a mess of a game, but it isn’t without merit and to be honest the first two games have their narrative flaws, as well.

      @@RustyTheFoxxo no need to be shitty. I fully admit to all of the third game’s flaws. I probably wouldn’t replay it past Tuchanka if I picked it back up. But there are a host of problems that existed before 3 even came along. Like Shepard’s resurrection at the start of 2 is kinda dumb if you think about it for five seconds. The main quest in 2 in general was pretty contrived but it doesn’t get as much hate as 3 because it nails the ending and also because we were mostly there for the side stuff, anyway. First game has a few cliches scattered around, but because it introduces a new universe it doesn’t need to be airtight. There are holes in the tapestry throughout the trilogy because that’s what happens when mere mortals try to create art; everything is flawed. But if you didn’t get glossy-eyed when Mordin starts singing his final song you are lying or cold blooded.

      ME3 is fixed by updates and dlc to the point where if this guy included them he’d have a short video full of nothing but minor complaints. Inquisition followed ME3 and won goty. Andromeda was made by a B-team of about 30 people or so, and Anthem was made to be a Destiny clone and was only EA decision making, so of course they both suck
      Now we’re getting Mass Effect Legendary edition where everything is fixed, upgraded, remade in the case of ME1, and cheap, DA4 probably next year, and ME4 after that. You can't explain away a terrible ending with bullshit DLC, they could've had $400 worth of groundbreaking amazing expansion packs and it still wouldn't fix this chemical fire of an ending.
      Inquisition earning goty was like a participation trophy. Being made by a B-team or being a Destiny clone doesn't justify the decision to do that in the first place. They don't have control over shit, the company is still one of the most atrociously managed studios in game development with extensive documenting on it.
      ME4? Yeah that'll be great, the game that is going to have to shit on the legacy of the original trilogy even more than ME3's ending to even exist. Making any of their shitty endings canon and it most likely being the one where all the geth are destroyed, is nothing short of a middle finger from Bioware. Invalidating all the hard work we put into that beautifully written arc that was integral to the entire series and removing one of the most important races of the series. I'd rather they never made a Mass Effect game ever again than give us one without the geth in it.
      You can love what Bioware has made without turning into a corporate mouthpiece. Terrible managers have been ruining Bioware for decades running the talent responsible for what we loved out the door with abuse no human should have to be put through, and it's their fault a once great and beloved studio has given us bad results. Both are Lovecraft-like ancient species that harvest other species and convert them into new members of their own race. The difference is that the Necromorphs don't try to pretend that they're trying to preserve life. Their motivation is presented as simply trying to keep their own species alive, while not caring about the other species. And they trick the other species into thinking that the Necromorphs are trying to preserve the lesser species. Honestly, Bioware should have taken a similar route with the Reapers. Where they pretend that they want to preserve organic life, when in reality, they're just making sure that their own race has a future.

      You had no payoff to _any_ of the actually pressing matters that the players that bothered to play the previous titles would have to wonder over: That being how the other characters right after, or hell, even the other races in general fared after all of this went down, because that's what the players have been getting invested in over the course of the trilogy. You sure as fuck couldn't get invested into the plot or the villains, given that the reapers themselves haven't been developed *at all* after ME1, with only the Collectors as their henchmen being the main antagonists in ME2 and all the more generic "humanoid" enemies in the reaper groundforces are your main enemies in actual combat with a secondary role for Cerberus as the side villains, given that all the actual Reaper battles either happened in gimmicky set pieces or cutscenes. Hell, that we end up defeating the reapers was obvious from the word go, it's how stories like this are supposed to end after all.
      The fact that this was treated as the entry point for newcomers to the series means you had to re-establish a fuckton of lore already known to any recurring player, which severely hampers any decent storytelling in the first place. Not to mention that you not only boiled down an already boiled down RPG (from ME1 to ME2 and then from ME2 even further to ME3) to appeal to a wider market of the cover-based shooting variety, all the while forcing multiplayer to actually get anything accomplished - because lets be real, nobody 100% the game on their very first attempt given that certain side missions fall off if you progress too far into the plot.

      The first time I played ME3 I did not know that Thessia was the final mission of the game's original storyline. Everything afterwards was just random filler to bumrush towards the last few missions before going to Earth. If it was not for the fact I had been going around fulfilling as many side missions as I could before hand I would of missed well over half of the game and never returned to ME3 because of it's godawful endings.

    I know this horse has been beaten to death, but may as well get my punches in too: the kid being the source of Shepard's nightmares is the shittiest writing I've ever seen. My feeling is Bioware would've had to code in 30 different dream sequences to adequately represent the choices you made through ME1 and ME2 (Squadmate left behind on Virmire, whether Kirrahe surviving or not. Wrex surviving or not, etc... Hell, even Jenkins would've made for a better dream sequences than some random kid that may or may not exist).
    I used to dislike Vega until I decided to explore his backstory some more
    He's an alright character, but he suffers from a lack of creativity from the writers.
    Liara: By far my most disliked character. In ME1 she at least had a consistent character arc that made it a point to let the player know she is an antisocial, naive archaeologist. ME2 had the saving grace in the form of enough time had passed for Liara to shift her views towards becoming the shadow broker. But ME3 throws all character development and history out the window in favor of creating an emotional tie to Thessia, all the while throwing an ungrateful, uncooperative Asari councilor at us and the Asari hoarding their own Prothean beacon. Liara has no grounds to stand on when she confronts Javik and is told her own species only got to the point they're at due to the Protheans deeming them as the best chance at stopping the reapers in this cycle. I wish BioWare would've left the option in to choose whether to save Liara or the Virmire survivor, at least then there would've been a realistic response to the revelation on Thessia.
    Kai Leng: Another victim of Bioware's rushed development. Could've been the perfect antagonist to Shepard, but instead he comes across as an edgy teenager.
    Priority Earth: The lack of a soundtrack, competent level design, contrived "last conversation" scene with zero interest... this level could have been incredible had BioWare delayed the release in order to redesign the maps to allow for a better flow (such as crawling through the streets of London in order to make it to the operational zone after your shuttle is shot down). Along the way you can disrupt Reaper activities that can either have a positive or negative impact on your final push towards the Citadel, where this could either result in Shepard dying to Harbinger or succeeding in his push and activating the device. All in all, such a missed opportunity that left a sour taste in most players' mouths.

    Okay there’s a few things here.
    1: communication equipment will have issues working in combat areas. This is fairly common. It’s caused by all of the dirt getting kicked up and science which I’m too lazy to learn.
    2: guerrilla tactics based forces are extremely effective against organized military forces. Anderson knows this and stays behind to help slow down the reapers by leading a guerrilla war.
    3: plans never survive contact with the enemy. Anderson decided to stay as a last second decision because it was needed.
    4: the biggest flaws of games like this is that you never actually see the “little” events that go on. Same with movies and tv shows. It’s actually why Goblin Slayer is my favorite anime, because it doesn’t focus on the Big Evil Guy
    5: there is still no explanation as to why the guns use heat sink “clips”. There are guns today, that deal with that issue already (barrel shrouds, ported barrels and water cooling systems are a thing and I refuse to believe that a simple little thermal “clip” contains the heat generated when the gun is fired as the ENTIRE gun would begin to heat up).
    6: this game was still fun despite its infuriating flaws. It could’ve been way better but it also could’ve been infinitely worse (see Fallout 76).
    And finally, EA is worth more than 1k sins.

    • @Arsonprobable
      @Arsonprobable 4 года назад +1

      There is an explanation on heat clips. And it has something to do with superheated plasma generating more heat than an average bullet. I really hate when people dog on the futuristic/science fiction genre for stuff like this. Its called science FICTION for a reason. • @lucashenry5024

    • @gundamnexus-dk8yi

      The reason thermal clips are used its because they disperse heat faster than any other method. The reason guns don't fire without them is that the safety is automatically engaged to prevent the gun from being damaged by heat buildup.

      Harkin's only involvement in the first game was as a potential connection to get into contact with Garrus. Sure, he's a dick to Shepard if you go to him, but Harkin's a dick to everyone. That doesn't make him a rival, even a minor one. Hell, you can completely skip meeting Harkin at all and just go to Barla Von, so there's the possibility that Shepard doesn't meet Harkin at all until Mass Effect 2, at which point they have to be reminded who Harkin is because he was so inconsequential. And in Mass Effect 2 itself, the only point at which he turns up is in Garrus's loyalty mission and Garrus is the one that can does or doesn't put a bullet in him (admittedly, non-fatally). Shepard's only involvement there is whether or not they tell Garrus not to bust a cap in his ass.

    I really don’t like the Council. If you sacrificed them in the climax of Mass Effect 1, like I did because “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” and all that. Also, we needed to ensure that we were hitting Sovereign with everything at once. I went Paragon Route throughout the story and I still accepted the 20+ Renegade points that came with letting the Council die.
    I had hoped that the second Council would take the initiative after that attack on the Citadel to talk to Shepard, Anderson, literally any of the Normandy crew, especially Liara, and given the payoff of the Council taking the Reaper threat more seriously.
    I can understand trying to cover it up to not cause a mass panic and I can even buy the first Council trying to apply reason and their given logic about Saren at the time before Eden Prime. Lots of unknowns, too many maybes, it makes sense. At first.
    But the Council, whether you let them die or save them, turn out to be completely unreliable and a waste of time even when you have definitive proof that the threat is nowhere near dead.
