Wynton Marsalis at The Royal Albert Hall 1993

  • The Wynton Marsalis Septet perform at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the 1993 BBC Proms Season.
    Prom 40 in the 1993 season was a late night concert at 10.00pm on Thursday 19 August.
    The concert featured several movements from Marsalis' extended work In This House, On This Morning.
    The BBC's coverage of the Prom was presented by Geoffrey Smith and began with a pre-recorded interview with Marsalis in which he discussed his aims as an artist and his commitment to challenging negative stereotypes of African American culture.
    Personnel: Wynton Marsalis trumpet, Walter Blanding Junior soprano and tenor saxophone, Wessell Anderson alto saxophone, Wycliffe Gordon trombone, Eric Reed piano, Reginald Veal bass and Herlin Riley drums.
    The BBC's coverage was directed by Kriss Rusmanis.

    I recorded this myself back in 1993 but so pleased to find it here. Many thanks for uploading. This is Winton and his band at there very best...

    Absolute class. Watched this on live BBC TV. Recorded it on cassette tape and still play it to this very day. Nice Wynton !

    I remember that first trumpet solo, was standing right down the front. I went to a talk he did while on that tour and had a wee lesson. He let me, made me play that horn. That was a very scary moment but a great one and one that I'll cherish for the rest of my life. Go Wynton!

    I was 17 and new to playing Jazz Piano when I went to this gig. One of the greatest concerts I've ever been to. A real education.

    Like so many other commenters, I saw this on BBC in 1993. I was only 13 but it had a huge impact on me. Every year or two I’d try to find it online or in a store but I must never have checked RUclips so thank you so so much for sharing this wonderful piece of history!

      And so do I, I remember spending the night dancing around my living room ... and the next night I saw him play the first half ITHOTM at Snape Maltings Concert hall. Brilliant!!!!

      ryan kisor? you're either purposely trying to be controversial or you don't know anything about the players he is even currently surrounded with. Youshould be asking why his audiences are easily 98% white consistently
