Installing the Fallout 3 DVD in 2024

- Today I install Fallout 3 from the original PC DVD-ROM. Does it work? I don't know. I don't know. I think it might work. Let's find out. Please like and scribe

I remember having to install New Vegas with a disc. Honestly I much more prefer steam but this is still really cool to watch. My guess is that it simply is not compatible with newer windows versions since you are installing directly from the disc and not off a server. The version on steam are updated to work with modern windows. I could be wrong, but that is my assumption. Fallout 3 in general is really broken on newer operating systems.
Yeah, a mod at least partially fixed it and the game opens now. Even the New Vegas disc was just a steam installer though, and installing games from disc through Steam has been broken/unsupported for a long time now. Any discs that installed Steam and required you to register the access key through Steam are basically useless today, unless you happen to come across a brand new copy with an unused code. In that case you can register the key to your Steam account and install it from their servers--NOT from the discs. The steam discs are basically e-waste today, just collectibles/a relic of the past. That's why I was super excited that Fallout 3 installed at all--it had nothing to do with Steam at all, and had minimal DRM
Honestly, I've been using this same f3 installer disk along with fallout mod manager for like 15+ years now, and I've never had any problems aside from the occasional crash once in a while. That's how I installed it on my current PC with windows 10 and it runs just fine.

maaan brings me back to the first time i put that fallout 3 disk inside my shitty laptop. i was 13 at the time and I had no idea I was about to play what would become my favourite videogame ever at a solid 12 FPS
It seems the trope of "playing fallout 3 on my severely underpowered laptop at a young age" is one shared by many

This makes me crazy nostalgic! Its the whole reason I started this channel. I finished Fallout 3 3 times and the last time with all the bobbleheads and achievements. Feeling old now... Cheers for the Vid and Love from The Netherlands

I only know steam but their is a bunch of performance mods and you can get it super modded with little to no crashes

You can still get DVD drives on your pc if you build it or use a service like ibuypower.

I forget to add one to my current PC that I bought 7 years ago. Even when I dont miss it most of the time I will still add it to my next PC coming somewhere this year ^^
You want a headache? Try installing Sims 3 with all the expansions. 😅 So many discs... Some of them having multiple, iirc. I remember there was this old wives tale that you had to install them in the order of releases for maximum stability.
it kind of sounds like fun to collect them all and try to jigsaw it together......
I had no clue old windows live games still work, I might have to get myself a copy.
It's actually so cool that it's not broken on Windows 10. The standard GFWL installer might also still work, I haven't tried it out

Forgive me for being curious. I grew up in an era where you can buy any game you want digitally and where computers don't even come with disc drives anymore
@@korrina breh, I'm 5 years old. My Leap Frog don't have no floppy drive 3 1/4 or 5 1/4. No cd player. no dvd player. no blu-ray player. no zip drive. no PATA, SATA, or SCSI drives. its just a 8 TB pci-e gen 5 beast connected directly to South Korean internet.

I _believe_ "A bright future... underground!" was coined for FO3. I haven't read the manuals for the classic games, but nothing like that is ever really used in-game. I adore how FO3 expanded on the setting in ways like that, despite a few hiccups.
Wow, I didn't expect the game to even launch - it wouldn't on Steam a few years ago, and you needed some anti-GFWL patch to fix it. Too bad it doesn't work past that. I wonder how fixable that is. I'd love to have physical copies of these games, but the DRM and hardware/software changes preventing them from running... well, yeah, it'd kinda be a waste for money to me (unless they come with goodies I'd want, like maps). Seeing the install screen is still interesting though. I'll be watching your Skyrim video soon I think.
After installing a windows 10 fix mod, the game actually runs. I dont know if it was an issue with "fallout.ini" or "d3d9.dll" but replacing both of those with the files from "Fallout 3 Windows 10 Fix" on Nexus Mods got it to boot into a new game, GFWL and all.
I think eventually I'll re-buy the games on GOG just to have some kind of set of doomsday installers backed up for myself
@@korrina Fallout Mod Manager has a built-in tool that does the same thing. I've been using it on every PC for the last like 10+ years and it still works flawlessly every time, even on Win10.
