As a marine recruiter that just started, I couldn’t agree with you more. The process to get people in is such a pain in the ass and it’s so difficult to keep people motivated. I have one individual that is completely clean except he smoked a dab right before talking to me. Completely clean medical, physically fit, smart (scored above 50) can’t contract him due to THC and it’s so frustrating.
Had another kid get sent to BUMED because he had a bad case of diarrhea when he was 14.
It’s fucking ridiculous the amount of bullshit and obstacles in our way just to enlist someone.

Genesis; where they go through your criminal and medical history, is really ruining recruiting. I remember going to MEPS with 40-50 new recruits but at the end of the day only a few recruits including myself were accepted. Most of the recruits who didn't get approved was due to them forgetting or not mentioning certain medical records about them. Also, Genesis makes enlisting too difficult because it nitpicks some of the most minor criminal and medical records. For example, let's say you had a stomach ache when you were 10 years old, went to the doctors, and was prescribed medications to treat it. When you enlist as an adult now and head to MEPS they will pull up your Genesis and find out about that medical record and if you do not report it will restrict you from enlisting. Like what does having a stomach ache when you were 10 years old and getting prescribed medication that happened ages ago have to do with serving as a United States soldier here and now?

Your videos have been so helpful! The Army needs to assign you as their official spokesperson. I appreciate the time you take to make the videos and answer dm’s. My son who is at basic right now almost didn’t go in. It took almost 2 years of paperwork and waivers to get him in, we almost gave up. My other son wanted to join the AF a few months ago but was told his BMI is too high. He’s built like a tank. He’s in great shape, just solid from head to toe. He’s a firefighter and would have been an asset to the military. I hope they implement your suggestions!

tern. Airforcr are corn balls. Being a firefighter is a great job. If he wants to server his countrymen he's doing it as a firefighter. An tell him to try the Army they have many of jobs to choose from including aviation. My youngest brother being under weight had to gain to join in airforce ridiculous. I join army combat job at 19 under 100 lbs .that's ten times harder to be in than any airforce job. I made it though easy despite being smallest. Some of these recruiting regs are dumb they need revising majorly. Lucky my brother put on some pounds and got in.

Glad to hear someone speaking on what need to be said and heard. I was interested in enlisting in the Army a year ago. Go enlisted as a reserve, save my GI Bill for my sons, complete college with TA and attend OCS to commission…BUT…what killed me was that the ONLY time the recruiter talked to me was that ONE day I went to the office. I was overweight and he told me he’d send me a plan and diet and all the good stuff right? Well I never heard from him again, no one followed up, no pt in office, no nothing. No comradery between recruiter to a fellow veteran. I walked away and honestly it was something I really wanted to do but now I’m indecisive of Marines again or try Army one last time.

When I first got out of high school, I tried to talk to an Air Force recruiter about joining. At the time I was 5’6 and 170 pounds, active in several sports and wore a size 4 pants (very little fat on me). The recruiter wouldn’t even talk to me, he said, until I dropped 40 pounds. I concluded that you needed an eating disorder to join the military, which I wasn’t willing to do, so I joined the fire department instead, serving my community as a firefighter/paramedic. If you want to serve, there are plenty of other ways to do so.

Sergeant Swartz, I just wanted to say that ALL your thoughts in this video are right on point. I say this as someone who is currently in the process of enlisting and going active duty (first time solider), and who just turned 36. Additionally, I have a morale waiver and a medical waiver that must be processed (along with aforementioned age waiver); both tied to relatively minor things that happened between 10 - 15 years ago. I am currently over 3 months in since I had the first conversation with my recruiter. I also already have my BS degree and a job that pays very well, but I have never been able to scratch the itch to serve, and follow in the footsteps of other family members I look up to. It happens to be that now, at this point in my life, is a perfect opportunity for me to join and follow that dream, along with attempting to change career paths into something I have realized I am more passionate about as I have gotten older. However, due to the all the ridiculous hurdles and hoops I am having to jump through, I am already becoming very turned off on the process. I know every case is different, but based on my limited experience thus far, I can CLEARLY see how many people are (most likely) just ending up going a different direction in life, or to another service branch, simply because they can because opportunities for pay/benefits that compare are plentiful; even for people without a college degree. It really shouldn't have to be this way, should it? I am honestly blown away with the difficulty and time it takes to join, when having any type of waiver. All this to say, I FEEL YOU. Keep doing what you're doing because you ARE making a difference out here and I am happy I found your channel a few months back when I began this journey. She failed the ASVAB the first time and scored a 24 points difference on the 2nd one. She took the confirmation test and it is harder than the actual test, then she failed. I was in the navy from ‘86-‘93. The navy rarely met recruiting goals back then and the same problem exist today. I think that it’s probably for the same reasons. The military seems to want the perfect individual who is smart , physically fit and motivated to join. Those people are in very short supply. The worst problem is a lot of people who do join disillusioned with the military and leave this making a problem worse. When I was in basic training, our company commander ( drill instructor) was speaking with us and told us that 1 in 50 of us will be in for 20 years. Those are atrocious numbers. A lot didn’t even make it through basic training for many reasons. If the military was a private business, the CEO would be fired real fast. The military seems perplexed as to what the problem is but they’ve been told over and over again and again for many years but they won’t listen. Today , I work at a hotel and out GM is in hot water after our guest ratings dropped. The military has the same issue. Our GM increased pay and made some other changes. The military will come up with policies to screw people over . It seems counter productive which it is; so why do that ?

I have only 2 test done for my GED. I can’t stop working just to go take my test life just moves to fast. My bills never stop.
They should allow us to enlist and obtain our ged after basic. This way I can go ahead and go.
I went to speak with my local recruiter. He told me that folks with GED do NOT have the ability to get a bonus. That’s absurd. Sorry Uncle Sam, that I had to quit school and get a job to feed my family. Just absolutely ridiculous.

    • @TEAMSWARTZ
      @TEAMSWARTZ  Год назад +1

Sorry you’re struggling and I feel for ya! In life we make decisions… good or bad they both come with and effect. Cause and effect but if we make better decisions and think bigger picture… you can make things happen. You chose to drop out of HS for what sounds to me like a needed decision. So, GED holders are not eligible for incentives like a bonus. It is what it is. We can point fingers and play the blame game or we can get things done. It’s mindset and sacrifice. Consistency and determination!
With that said, I have a viable option for you that you can do in the evenings and/or early mornings that’s free initially and able to complete in less than 30 days. It’s a website called Sophia.org
Be sure to choose the evaluations based on multiple choice testing versus papers. It’s free for the first 30 days but after that, a subscription fee of $100 or greater will begin to apply. So make sure you cancel. For less than $20 you’ll purchase an official college transcript but only after you’ve earned 15+ credits. Then cancel…

Prior service here. Completed 4 years active duty from 2011 through 2015 as a Marine with honorable discharge and re-entry code 1A. Tried enlisting in the Army and my recruiter told me I didn’t need to do Basic again and would retain my pay grade of E4 while not needing to leave right away in September since I wanted to leave in October. Passed my physical at MEPS and then the career counselor tells me I need to do basic again, get demoted to E3 and would have to ship in a couple weeks prior to the new fiscal year. All of this while not getting the incentives new recruits get off $40k quick ship bonus (or any bonus), picking a duty station, and with business rules restrictions. My recruiter then tried to persuade me to sign and do this but I wasn’t having it. Made no sense to me. I applied for a waiver to skip BCT and retain E4 but now I’m waiting for to hear back. Honestly retaining my pay grade is more important since financially it would help me support my wife while she finds work when we relocate. What’s your opinion on why prior service get treated like dog s#%! when we have already been trained, proven to not get in trouble and have served honorably?

    • @TEAMSWARTZ
      @TEAMSWARTZ  2 года назад +2

I’ve never heard an e4 being reduced to an e3… That sounds SUS to me and I totally agree with you. So many restrictions for PS individuals coming back into active duty but way more options going Reserve/Guard. BCT is a requirement if you been out of service for 5 or more years but can be requested to be waived only after you already enlisted. Not before and expect to complete BCT if the waiver is ultimately denied. E4 is too easy to get approved if required. Hey Sarge- first, thank you for your videos. They have been a hugely informative and entertaining. I appreciate hearing about the Army/National Guard from a down-to-earth person.
Currently going through the NG recruitment process and I have to say one of the HUGE turn-offs is the switch from a 20-year retirement plan to what amounts to a 401(k). The NG I'll now match 3% of contributions. That is what you will find in almost ANY white-collar job and (these days) most blue-collar jobs too. In fact, at least 80% of the jobs I have had included this.
Besides a nice enlistment bonus, where is the incentive? A lot of people who are qualified to serve probably don't, simply because they can get a better deal anywhere. Sign up for 6 years of your life for OK pay, a few small nice perks (10% brand discounts), and a 401(k). This is equal or worse than most employers! At my current job I make good money, get a 30% discount, and 401(k). Besides the health insurance and signing bonuses, where is the carrot to get them signed AND retained? I was interested in putting in my 20, but now I'm not so sure past my first contract.

Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼 It’s 5% match and I don’t know any company out there that can match our healthcare costs as an employee. I paid over $186/mo and my employer paid the other half as a 19yro healthy kid. It’s $50/mo as a part time Soldier working as little as 2 days per month. Yeah places like Starbucks, McDonalds, etc… have 401K, Tuition Assistance, etc… but they require full time employment commitment. Being part time in the Guard/Reserve again, the minimum commitment is 2 days per month. Tell me a civilian company that allows you to work a couple of days per month earning starting weekend salary $231-302 (two days work), up to 100% tuition assistance, individual healthcare $50/mo / family healthcare capped out at $250/mo, dental $14/mo / family Dental $32/mo and more. Again, only working two days per month. Not to mention, free secret clearance or higher valuing over $10k as a civilian, various certifications FREE, paid to learn, paid to workout, and so much more. These are just a few I’m gonna mention but I do hear you. Recruiters say the same and I disagree for the reasons I stated. I do plan on addressing this in a video in the near future and in more detail.

Went to MEPS to have my Picat test confirmed. my picat score didn’t upload and had to take the ASVAB that day. I was mentally drained and got same score and they kept the ASVAB. I got the same 67 but don’t know what I got on my Picat as per my line scores. I think that as per line scores purposes I probably did better in the Picat as I was well rested and maybe I would’ve scored higher in my line scores. If I got a 67 after not touching a book since 1999 I honestly think that 31 is a low score.

Great video as usual BUT...most of the video was about what would make it easier for a recruiter to get candidates through the process. I get it and a good job. What I would like to hear more about is what the Army (and the other branches I suppose) can do to improve their "message" to the new generation of recruits.
I'm not sure if you didn't want to or couldn't make too many comments about the "woke" culture that's turning off a lot of candidates. I think the military needs to step away from that as much as possible.
My other suggestion - and harder to implement - is making a few changes in the way the Army takes care of its soldiers. For starters fix the food crisis. Who wants to join a military where the news going around is that soldiers have to be on SNAP to survive. There should be no reason on God's earth that an enlisted member of the Army or their family should be on SNAP. The military should stop charging enlisted personnel to pay for their meals! What the actual hell?!? Sure soldiers are given BAS but eating at the mess hall should always be free to them. Either pay E1-E3 more (which I think would just encourage most of them to make worse financial decisions) or figure out a better way to make sure they and their dependents have enough money for food.
The perception of abuse and trauma needs to be changed. Yes, when I was a young recruit drill sergeants still screamed and yelled and did all the things that drill sergeants are famous for. Even then I thought it was not necessary. Sure when you screw up you need to know immediately there are consequences but just stop all the head games and nonsense. I’m glad that the shark attack has been removed in favor of building respect and trust in NCOs from day one as opposed to fear and resentment. The Army is a team and should be built as such from day one where leadership is respected not feared. This is not the draft Army of the 20th century.
Lastly, the Army needs to promote a positive social media presence about “why I like Army life” or “how the Army put myself and my family through college” etc. That message is out there but right now there are a LOT of veterans online who like to do what soldiers do best: bitch and complain about the Army. Anybody who has spent any time in the Army knows that soldiers like to complain but it’s usually reserved inside the Army amongst fellow soldiers. These prior service soldiers are painting a very negative picture of the Army without an equally positive voice to offset their opinions. They absolutely have earned the right to bitch but the Army should have the ability to say “Army life isn’t perfect but here are your opportunities" to prospective recruits.
A long post I know but thank you for reading if you got this far.

Not a single one of those “old” recruits would ever be last in the pack because their experience in the world hardens them to IMO easily “embrace the suck” and likely be among the top soldiers in their platoon given the intangibles they have acquired through years of, well, just living life. That being said, been waiting on age and RE code waiver for a long time. Started the process in April of ‘21 and my recruiter just informed me that due to all the changes lately he has had to submit them 4 times! Really hoping to be in basic by the end of the year because I turn 40 in July ‘23.

I was granted an age waiver with Army National Guard (currently 37), but they were only going to let me pick a job from the "critical jobs" list. I already dislike my civilian job, I don't need another I dislike. Off to the Air National Guard I go. I was really set on the Army, too. I guess they don't need their recruitment numbers that badly. Call it a bad attitude if you want, but I have too much valuable life experience to join the Army to just be a cook.

I think people with mental health conditions should sign a waiver saying that the military aren't liable to compensate them if they show symptoms of whatever they may have had prior to joining. If they have letters from their doctor they should be fine! If they show symptoms when in or after service then it's on the recruit and not the military and boom. People with previous mental health records can join so the military has recruits AND they won't be financially responsible for them when they leave incase they wanna make a claim in the future

Before high bonuses were hard to get. But here lately they are basically giving out $40k to anyone. People still look at that and are like nahhh, I’ll just pick a job I like instead. Pretty much spot on with everything. I’m not sure if you mentioned this with MHS Genesis, but a great idea that I heard was to have a person @ BN level have access to it so we aren’t blindsided with DQs at MEPS.

Holy shit i was saying the same thing every minute i watched your video just now. real quick, im 34 (so late) about to test tomorrow, have misdemeanors from 4 to 5 yrs ago, traffic tickets and now i have to get a certificate that says i completed probation from like 6 yrs ago. not to mention the fact of my age being so high, but its super crazy how the enlistment process is. Im currently in the Willingboro, NJ office with some outstanding SSgt's and Sgt's guiding me through it. No medical issues, no serious offenses either. Its understandable that the Army wants the best, but damn three other people had the smarts to easily be picked first before me to push to MEPS, but weight was the issue for two and one didnt even have a birth cert handy. Ive been going back n forth with eagerness to serve my country and acquire as much knowledge and direction in my life, but this small obstacle of paperwork, just shows that the Army needs the help and revamp. I am 5'11/155lbs, walk 45 miles in 4 days, maxed at 53 pushups, 58 situps and at least 8 pullups. even wrote a letter descibing how i am taking 100% accountability in my life now. Where does the application process get easier or less drawn out? Here's to hopefully getting my shot at wearing the uniform Ive been working toward!!!!

(My opinion) we need to stop caring as much about what the civilian populace thinks of us. Focus on retention and the groups of people you're recruiting statistically. Get rid of the woke stuff and focus on combat effectivness and professionalism. Really drive the army values and tradition. I'd also say extend basic training and take that extra time to make them soldiers and to really understand their MOS and what it means to be a soldier. But again that's my opinion, the truth of it is there is no one shot answer. It's going to take time and a lot of trial and error. I started following your channel when I was getting ready for basic training a couple years ago and I've served proudly so far, and appreciate all your advice and videos, aswell as find it interesting to see what's all changed since I enlisted being I have some friends and family who are on the fence on enlisting. It was crazy how they treated the recruiters and then wonder why soldiers did not want to convert to full time. I went back to my MOS (16R) knowing that I would never make E-7, whereas we were told if we converted you would usually pin your E-7 in two to three years. 4 years NG recruiter, 20 yrs service here. I have to say I agree with all of that. I did want to comment on a few things.
GENESIS: I find it hard to believe DOD didn’t know what this would do. They are either incompetent or they ignored it. The program looks like force reduction but instead of the politicians saying it they blame recruiting. The CMOs should only go back 5 years and only be able to request docs once. Our CMO likes to use it as fishing multiple times. If we aren’t kicking people out for issues should we keep them from getting in? With the ADD, anxiety, and minor depression it’s very much a do as we say not as we do.
Bonuses: I joined the guard with a 6 year contract after being prior service. By the time it was over they said “too bad you’ve been in too long. No bonus” WHY?? If you’re still serving and extending you should still be able to get a bonus.
I’ll add one suggestion. Go back to being a 1 weekend per month, 2 weeks in the summer. We have 4 day drills, 3+ week ATs, super mutas and so on. We aren’t at war so we need to cut back and give our guard members more stability for their home life.
    Just some thoughts!

As a Naval veteran, I garuntee that I feel like others in my generation do. The military got exactly what they deserved. 85% of the guys I knew got washed out in our 1st enlistment for several reasons. Most, because of the fact that the Navy had a "surplus" of sailors in 2006 and didn't need us at the time.

It doesn’t help that there are candidates that are disqualified for simply having ever taken council for behavior health.
Can you imagine someone getting disqualified because their parents thought they had ADHD and had them examined and gets disqualified from military once they turn 18?
Because that has happen way too often especially because recruiters often ignore them due to not wanting to deal with paper work.

I would suggest requiring a memo from the individual denying any leave request with an individualized reason for the denial, and specific impact on the individual requesting and the unit. If there is no impact, leave denial should be unauthorized, and it must be reviewed by someone 2 ranks higher.
