Abandoned Ships, Ferries and Liners

- But that’s not what ships are for. A very well-known quote about ships, and so very true. One of the more recent ships that had to be abandoned in a hurry, was the Italian Cruise liner, the Costa Concordia. Tragedy struck in 2012, and 32 people died in this awful incident. The ship was valued at $500 million, and the captain - who caused this tragedy, was imprisoned for manslaughter.
7 - Rough Seas Ahead…
1951 was the year the SS Independence was launched. This luxurious liner was often frequented by Hollywood stars and royalty. Ownership changed in the 1970’s, and then in the 80’s returned to her original makers. By the 90’s, money was tight and it was difficult to keep her afloat. 2001 her owner filed for bankruptcy, and the ship was resold several times. The ship was due to be scrapped in India, but the government forbade her entry, as she was still filled with toxic waste that would damage their coastline. The ship was finally beached off Alang, and torn to pieces.
6 - Once upon a time…
It may not look like much now, but this boat was built in 1865 - and these are still some of its remains. Called The Darra, she used to be a fast tea clipper working for the Orient line. She was then an immigrant ship for the new Australians in 1887 and eventually gutted by fire in 1899. It was towed to Quail Island in 1951 where its remained ever since.
5 - A sailor’s life for me…
This record setter ship is called the SS United States. And in 1952 it managed to travel across the ocean in just 3 days, 10 hours and 40 minutes. The ship was retired in 1969 and many years later, towed to Pennsylvania, where it’s now a rusty, futile eye-sore.
4 - A little seasick…
1955 was the year the beautiful MV Aurora was launched in West Germany. She has sailed under many different names, including Delos, Polar Star, Pacific Star, Xanadu, Expex, Faithful and Aurora. She could carry 1600 passengers, and was sadly declared abandoned in 2007. Her current owner is Christopher Wilson, and she’s currently being restored. Sadly, there seem to be a number of legalities concerning this girl, and there’s a good chance she’ll end up being sold for scrap.
3 - Where good ferries go to die…
We’ve seen an airplane graveyard before, but this is Staten Island’s Abandoned Ferries - which is just as eerie. It’s the final resting place for boating wrecks, where they are left to rot. The ferries are particularly eye-catching, as they played such an important role at some point in their lives, ensuring that people were able to get to and from work. It’s sad to see them rotting away like that.
2 - The motion of the ocean…
This liner comes out of Yugoslavia, and was a cruise ship specifically built to cash in on the lucrative market of travelling through the Alaskan and Antarctic waters. The MV Lyobov Orlova sailed for 25-years before it was seized due to huge debts owing on it. She was sold to Neptune International Shipping in 2012, who had intentions of breaking her up for scraps - however, whilst transporting her, the rope snapped and they lost her in the water. They spotted her floating in Irish waters in 2013, and the story goes that they sent a tug out to fetch her and tow her into international water and deliberately cut her loose. Where she is now, I’m really not sure.
1 - As free as the ocean…
Free Enterprise the 3rd was a massive vehicle and passenger ferry crossing from Dover to Calais non-stop since it was built in 1966. She ran perfectly till 1984 and was sold and renamed Tamira. Sadly, new owners weren’t as successful with her and they sold her in 1985. She ran well again through till 2004, when she sadly ran aground in a well-known dangerous reef in Saudi Arabia. She’s been grounded and abandoned ever since. Развлечения
I was on the #1 ferry on it's last trip. They were giving away the stores. I had a great dinner. They had overstock of some items like place mats but no napkins. I was talking to one of the crew and he said that "This is the last trip for us. Tomorrow we're on the dole." I will never forget him saying that.
1:08 Titanic, Olympic, and Brittanic "Hold our beers."
Gold Sword well said
Symphony of the Seas: ok boomer.
Great video, excellent work. Thank you so much for sharing.
5:29, that ferry sat there for years, I remember seeing it off the Jersey Tpke as far back as the 80s into the 2000s, they have since removed it..
Could have also included the St. Claire and the Columbia, two steamers that ferried passengers to Bob-Lo island on the Detroit River for decades, and sat abandoned for years when the park closed.
The Costa Concordia captain was told by the coastguard to get the hell back on his ship and help passengers because he was one of the 1rst to abandon ship.
rolf sinkgraven the smallest book in the world a history of Italian war heroes
yeee
I heard the same , sad ...
rolf sinkgrave
Thanks; interesting video.
Nice
Wish i had access to some of these boats I'd rebuild them as a giant houseboat or a trawler
The Staten Island Ferries....such a sad end :-(
Dont Forget the Papy Schlappendorf!
LOOOOOOL the Lord Selkirk made it to the list!!!!
The Beagle Channel is the one near Chile isn't it? Where is ohcile?
1:05 it was not and never was the larges cruise ship in the world not even in America!
WhoStoleMySocks agree it looks only like 6 decks and like 300 feet long it’s tiny
I have actually been on the Lord Selkirk going up and down the river for the evening. It was likely the 2nd larges cruise ship for Manitoba's lakes I bet. Nothing fancy, pretty dated when I was on it, they had to swing the lifeboat out when they went under some bridges to get enough clearance. It was eventually part of a "ships museum" out near Selkirk, where it was basically grounded and kind of stuck. It was badly vandalized and a mix of .. too damaged and expensive to be worth using again with any hint of profitability. Seems to be that it was damaged by a flood, and there went any hope of using it again.
Steal some shells, put some big ass pipes into the ships and start sailing the seven seas with your homemade battleship
#3 was not abandoned, it was bought by a man who had it towed to his dock in NJ, he was going to restore it but never got to it so he had it scraped
One image was of the Mary Murray which was a former Staten Island ferry that was purchased with the intentions of turning it into a dinner cruise ship. There were many unseen legal and Coast Guard related issues that scuttled the plan. It sat for many years in the Raritan River just east of the NJ turnpike in East Brunswick. One winter the ice in the river breached the hull and it sank in the shallow channel it was moored in. It sat listing to one side slowly deteriorating until the state forced the property owners to clean up the site and finally scrap the ferry and also the yacht that was formerly owned by The Shah of Iran which sat beached alongside it. The others were of the Staten Island ship graveyard on the Arthur Kill just north of The Outerbridge Crossing.
HOW DARE YOU CALL THE SS UNITED STATES AN "EYESORE". THAT BOAT WILL FLY AGAIN ONE DAY!!
Calm down its okay^_^
Yes as Independence in 85 was owned by American Hawaiian cruises and so was the SS Independence and Constitution they were sister ships I worked out of my to Hawaii at the Aloha Tower Out of Honolulu the Constitution was being sold for scrap and told across the ocean took on water and sink the Independence was supposed to be rebuilt for the last American build steam ship in the world but it disappeared it was hard to tell them apart cuz they had been refitted for medical ships during the Vietnam war and I worked on both of them for 5 months
Didn't one of the aforementioned ships burn up yesterday ? Don't remember where this happened .
Perhaps one should talk to the current owners of some of these vessels before making false claims or speculations
Correction the Costa Concordia wasn't abandoned there was a bunch of people to flip it over and scrapped it
QE2 is now safe as a floating hotel.
QE2 Is not abandoned, She is open as a hotel.
DSFCO Films QE1 is a hotel
@@tifluvsu80 The QE1 caught fire the Queen Mary is a floating hotel (Queen Elizabeth's Sister ship).
Save SS UNITED STATES 🇺🇸
We must!! She shall be saved!!!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
(American Anthem)
The World Wide History Of History Id say to move her to New York, because her designer (William Francis Gibbs) didn’t miss to see a single departure of her, and absolutely loved seeing her pass the Statue of Liberty 🗽
@@RyanTheRandom I'd still say keep her in PA because of its history, where her designer was actually born, and along with all of the risks that would be taken when moving her, plus, I think PA needs to have some other interesting site along with it's much nicer scenery, but I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
I was expecting the SS America
Ss American star?
tommy9760 yeah, that would be nice to see
what about the super liner Queen Elizabeth, sitting on it's side burnt out in Hong Kong Harbour, she was a very famous ship from the Cunnard Fleet, once used in a James Bond movie, why did she not make it on the list
The remains of the RMS Queen Elizabeth was scrapped so the ship is no longer there any more
Only That you can find her remains
The S.S.United States salied across the Ocean in 3 days ! - Which Ocean ?
Steve, It was the North Atlantic and this speed was the fastest for a Liner therefore she was awarded the Blue Ribbon which was a prestigious award.
The Atlantic. The SS United States still holds the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of a passenger liner for both directions. July 3-7 1952 @ 35.59 knots (65.91 km/h) eastbound and July 11-15 1952 westbound @ 34.51 knots (63.91 km/h). Those records are still unbroken.
And she could have done it even faster, when they beat the Queen Mary's time, they didn't push it any further.
waœőoøt
She still holds the record to this day, except for the hales trophy. She still has the Blue Ribband though!!!
5:34 this ferry here had a midget for a captain.its well documented
2:54 Australia New South Wales or no?
Wtf did she just say the QE2!!!!! was built in 1958 and is due to be scrapped??? The QE is still in California and in GOOD SHAPE.
The original Queen Elizabeth burned in China, (which was a very sad loss,) But the Queen Mary is currently open as a hotel, and has been a hotel since 1967.
Area85 Restorations- That is the Queen Mary that is a hotel ( Long beach California) Wich was built in the 1930's.
4:53 A RUSTY EYESORE?!?!?!?!?!? Do you not show any respect for that ship?!?!?!? That is America's flagship! To this day, it still holds her record, and it hasn't been beaten! The ship WILL be saved, and it'll possible become a hotel in NYC. Please fix the error, as the SS United States is no eyesore what so ever. She may look rusty, but the rust is thin, and she is actually in near-perfect condition. To this day, it is currently the strongest ship in America.
Are you a robot ?
Aussie/kiwi ?
Not all thes ships are abandoned, some were broken up for scrap, as stated!
Not all of them have been scrapped
There's still some preserved such as like the Aurora, Queen Elizabeth 2 (witch is now serving as a hotel), S.S United states, and Free Enterprise 3
And M.S World discoverer
And the Tug boat St. Christopher
And the TSS Duke of Lancaster
Why can't they dismantle and sell for scrap metal ???

Never heard about the store Christopher tug... Or the free Enterprise... Is this chick a robot?¿
If you go to Wikipedia
