This is one of those songs that comes on and everything else just stops. You don't want to miss a single note. It's a great song, but when Percy Sledge puts his emotion into it...perfection to the ear and heart.
Simply the most truest song ever written before or since. Every word I think as a man it's sung from us all from a time when we just couldn't see why they would ever ever leave us
What a great song! Perfectly sung. I saw Percy sing this a few years ago in downtown Baton Rouge...in front of an all white R&B band. It was GREAT! RIP Percy...and thanks! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Rest in peace Percy Sledge and thanks for that wonderful song. There is so much soul in it. I think your lady actually left you and changed her mind after she find out that you have a hit record.
Danced my first slow dance to this song when I was 13 years old, in the summer of 1966, at a birthday party of one of my school friends. Still brings me to tears today, and the memory of the emotions of that dance are still clear as a bell!
One of the greatest records ever made. Nobody could sing that song as wellas Percy. Nobody. Also Quinn Ivy was an honest and decent man who did not steal from Percy as far as I know.
Maybe the ONLY, producer, to ever not steal. Especially, the white ones! Back in those days, the problems for black recording artists, were still bad. Especially for, a country boy like Percy. He was blessed, to find a producer that, helped him develop his song into a sellable record and, treat him fairly. Percy, did the rest. What a singer!
@49jubilee Music was still good. We were just flooded, with bullshit for sale. Commercially directed, shit. That was produced to appeal to the mass markets, no virtuosity needed. The producers used to say, go ahead, make mistakes. We'll just edit them out. We'll make you sound like, a million bucks. That's why, we thought that, the music sucked. There were stations like: WNEW FM, WLIR FM, and whoever had Album Oriented Rock formats, on New York radio where you still heard, REAL MUSIC.
So she leaves(for a better job) and doesn't tell him? All the same. She left him. At least Percy was able to turn his heartache into a career-changing event.
She left went to another state for a better job??? But didn't tell him and they were in a relationship??? Was something wrong with Rotary telephones back then??? Looks like she heard money and came back running.

There will NEVER be a truer song written and no one can sing it with the feeling that Percy does. I've certainly been in this boat and You just can't understand how You can feel. this way about someone and they cheat on you behind your back. I was born, raised and still live in Tuscumbia, Alabama. It sits right beside Muscle Shoals. I wasn't born when this came out but this song will never lose it's relevancy. We love Mr. Sledge and even named the street he lived on in Leighton, after him. There have been a lot of songs come out of Muscle Shoals but it isn't well known. The area still has it's "small town" feel and while you can find yourself a bit bored from time to time due to the lack of things to do, it has been a wonderful area to have lived in. Fits me perfectly. Kudos to the geniuses who put such a moving song together. It is timeless.

She sounds like a narcissistic bitch. I mean, they were seeing each other, and she just fucked off to another city for a new job, WITHOUT telling Percy! Either she was too stupid to care about his feelings, or she lied her ass off about the whole thing once the song made Percy famous, just to get her hands on that sweet money.
