Robert Downes he probably does a little touring here or there and maybe some investment income but I have to believe the publishing and licensing income from “Vehicle”, “Eye of the Tiger”, his other Survivor hits and other artists bring in a very consistent and high income. About twenty five years ago -- it must have been around 1992 -- I had the pleasure of seeing him in a city of Chicago "Music for the Schools" conference type of thing. It was an event for high school students in the city where you could attend lectures by music professionals in a classroom, discussing everything from songwriting to recording to engineering. It was a very inspiring program, and free, from what I remember. At any rate, I remember sitting in this classroom -- I think it was the songwriting one --and Jim Peterik was leading it. I had no idea what to expect, and I'm not even sure I was aware he wrote "Eye of the Tiger" at the time. He walks in, acoustic guitar in hand, and starts with the repeated single note intro into the main riff, then vocals, and just OWNS the room. As a 16-year-old, I was just blown away by his musical confidence and charisma. I had never thought much of the song until then, but it made such an impression on me that that is the only thing I remember about that conference. And then he relayed the story about the writing of the song that is very similar to what is in this video, so he's clearly told the story a few times. :) So a tip of the glass to Jim. Thanks for your time and for inspiring us. And keep living the rock and roll life!

Thanks for writing that song. As an LSU TIGER fan its played all the time, and that "Eye of the Tiger" logo is proudly displayed on the 50 yard line in Tiger Stadium for every game!
Timeless classic rock song that I never tire of hearing or will ever sound dated, it still sounds as fresh today as it did back then! I can understand how inspiring it must have been for many people and how it can be used to drive people forward towards a goal. 😎👍 I remember saving up my pocket money and buying it on a 7 inch single vinyl, played it till my speakers blew up! ⚠️😁😎👍
This guy is a master songwriter. All of those Survivor songs are well laid out. The best ones were never famous too. I love his honesty. Very passionate about what he does as well.
Say what you want, but Jim Peterik is not a one hit wonder. He wrote Vehicle, a song by The Ides of March. It's a classic rock staple. He also wrote Hold on Loosely, by 38 Special. Brian Wilson , of all people , had him work on his 1998 solo album with him. He also is still very much involved in the business end of the music industry.

I too enjoy their journalists they do a great job gathering all this info on our favorite but not forgotten rock groups. The history behind their finds..its great to learn & see more.
It’s one thing to be a one hit wonder. It’s another thing entirely for someone to call you up and tell you to deliver them a hit song for their hit movie and for you to ace it. It’s the difference between a little leaguer hitting a home run by accident and a pro closer nailing a homer in in a playoff game.
They weren't really one-hit. Sly Stallone had heard "(Rich Man's Daughter)Poor Man's Son" which is why he wanted them on "III" and then afterwards they did "Burning Heart" for Rocky IV
Dude wrote "(I'm your) Vehicle" Ides of March, had a few other hits that are still on what is left of the radio. Yes he got the call, and he delivered the goods.
Well I like an old folk who still enjoy himself and still finds the time to exorcise while spotting a nice Lambo... That's what I call Going into life with style!. I have listened to this particular song many times, specially when I need to focus on something hard or need to focus on something.... still one of the best blasts from the past!... Cheers! all you guys have the Eye of the Tiger! >_O
Great tune and a tremendous stroke of luck to this man who lives his dream life and is still inspiring people with his songs. It's a classic example of winning at all costs.
Andy Mangele Same here, I'm huge Queen fan, but Eve of the Tiger fits way better than Another one bites the dust. I don't like that song too, Brian neither did back then and Roger totally hated it if I remeber well.
I was actually lucky enough to go to his house and check some of his guitars. He actually let me play that Flying V or at least one of the Korina Flying Vs he had at the time. After he put it in my hands he told me how much it was and my butt clenched.
Goosebumps guarantied!!! I went through something quite harsh not long ago and I put this song for encouragement, not knowing that people do the samething lol. So, this songs is realy inspiring to all kind of people for all kind of reasons. Hens that's a real universal song.
i dont even know what to think. i was sitting here and wanted to rip what i just saw but good for him man. got an opportunity made it happen and im looking at a lambo ,huge house and i dont even know how much of an insane! guitar collection/this couldnt have just come from the one song?haha. hey/ hats off the guys living his life and seems positive.
Great story on how the hit came about. A classic song that will be around a lot longer than some of the keyboard jokers here giving the guy a hard time for being a successful artist and individual.
Jim Peterik, one of the best composers in rock history, tremendous guy also. .love his backing vocals especially on the Vital Signs Survivor album. Excellent album
If that one hit helped inspire many many others to reach their potential? That is worth a lot! Hell if I'd come up with something like that, I would be satisfied in life.
It's good to see someone get to the point where nobody can touch their dignity. This guy really did it him and his wife live a very happy life in a beautiful place and he's proud of his life.
I met Jim and the guys of Survivor in the end of the 90' in South-Germany. They called the tour: The eye is back. The played the shows live (no playback!!!) and it sounds every show excellent.
1:12 Kleine opmerking: de ondertitel is fout. De "Custom" is een bestaand model in de Les Paul-lijn (naast o.m. de Standard, Studio, Junior, ...) Het is dus niet "op bestelling gemaakt".
A song can be like a great painting. It can restore the world and make history. I saw Rocky 3 in a theater when it came out, and I never saw anything like it since. Everyone stood and cheered in the theater - an audience of suburban families deeply inspired for the right reasons in the right way. Go ahead and make fun, then try to form a band good enough for a movie actor to call you up to write a song like that. I’ll wait...
David G do you really believe that one song bought him all that. He has plenty of other hits. This video is only about that specific hit Eye of the Tiger.

You gave the world an incredible/inspirational song that has lived for decades and will live on well after we're all gone. I'm pretty sure he's done more than just Eye Of The Tiger so he's not a 'one hit wonder'. He made me laugh with his clothes and hair and just the whole rock & roll lifestyle he's living. Good for him, he seems like a good dude!
Good for him! Jim earned his reward - he's a great songwriter and has written some classics. Great to see him living it up in a beautiful house with an amazing guitar collection.
The song was such an important part of Rocky it is so perfect for the movie unreal job Brother :-)
I remember saving up my pocket money and buying it on a 7 inch single vinyl, played it till my speakers blew up! ⚠️😁😎👍
This guy is a master songwriter. All of those Survivor songs are well laid out. The best ones were never famous too. I love his honesty. Very passionate about what he does as well.
Him and Frankie made a great song writing duo. RIP Jimi Jamison.
Anthony Brancale Co-wrote Hold On Loosely. With two others.
HOLD ON LOOSELY. Not Hang On Loosely.
thanks for that info. i didn't realize he was that prolific. and songs i know and like, too.
Vehicle - great song!!!
didn't know he wrote those songs.
I like this guy a lot, full of life and very humble ! Likeable guy, hard worker
finally a rock star that appreciates the song that made him. unlike clapton and santana and so many others who forget what made them
Congratulations, my friend i am Fan since 1981 i am 61 years greetings from Germany i sing that song over and over aigain during the 80th and 90rh in a lot of Coverbands it was a great time
I can’t believe I got to shake his hand last night. Played an amazing version of this song. He is such an awesome and down to earth person.
Inspired us all!
Thnk you Queen for not releasing those publishing rights!
We may never have heard such an inspirational juggernaut!
Much love from down under!
This song made the opening for ROCKY III.Especially the way how they introduced the start of ROCKY III. They timed it perfectly with the fireworks.
And it's the superior DEMO version that you hear in Rocky III. Absolutely amazing. I wish thet released that version alongside the studio one
I too enjoy their journalists they do a great job gathering all this info on our favorite but not forgotten rock groups. The history behind their finds..its great to learn & see more.
Evergreen. Classic.
My grandchildren listen to this.
One of the best interviews on the internet.
Survivor wasn't a one hit wonder. They were pretty good and had quite a few songs that got a lot of radio play back then.
They weren't really one-hit. Sly Stallone had heard "(Rich Man's Daughter)Poor Man's Son" which is why he wanted them on "III" and then afterwards they did "Burning Heart" for Rocky IV
One hit wonder? You really don't know A thing about music do You?
Dude wrote "(I'm your) Vehicle" Ides of March, had a few other hits that are still on what is left of the radio. Yes he got the call, and he delivered the goods.
@@alvinwine5665 He's defending him, you thick fuck.
Awesome. I love the ides of March and I love survivor.
If Joe Pesci and Ozzy Osbourne had a child, it would be Jim Peterik.
This made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love this guy. A true original. Great mini-doc.
One of the best song ever !!!!!
That Guitar collection is godlike! Amazing!
total legend
what a lovely, amazing video. i just love it. thank you for making it!!!
What an amazing story,the guy,the band,the song...RESPECT!
I could hangout with this Guy all day and learn a whole bunch, what a cool dude !
I'm not gettin on a treadmill! =)
Yeah he seems like a real nice person and would have some cool stories
@@gizmocrue73dw Gee that didn't even cross my mind, tells me whats on your mind when you see a stranger that you like to meet !
Great tune and a tremendous stroke of luck to this man who lives his dream life and is still inspiring people with his songs. It's a classic example of winning at all costs.
That soundtrack paid for a Lamborghini and some.
Much better song for that movie than the Queen song.
I'm a huge Queen fan - but funnily enough I like "Eye of the tiger" a lot more
than "Another one bites the dust"!
A low end one. The guitar collection is much more impressive.
Andy Mangele Same here, I'm huge Queen fan, but Eve of the Tiger fits way better than Another one bites the dust. I don't like that song too, Brian neither did back then and Roger totally hated it if I remeber well.
But Freddie - on the other hand - was totally into it! ;)
You realize that his guitar collection is worth a lot more than that Lamborgini?
man such an amazing interview, one of my all time favorite songs in my favorite movie franchise 😊
When one song makes you that much money you can be "exotic" :-) Great Story...musical success is so random...
This guy made lots of bank from several songs, not just Eye of The Tiger. You need to do some research before you comment.
One of THE best videos I have ever seen on youtube.
I was actually lucky enough to go to his house and check some of his guitars. He actually let me play that Flying V or at least one of the Korina Flying Vs he had at the time. After he put it in my hands he told me how much it was and my butt clenched.
You know someone's gotta ask. How much?
He come across as a pretty nice, down to earth person who loves life
Goosebumps guarantied!!!
This song really pushes you forward in life. Amazing !
Great story on how the hit came about. A classic song that will be around a lot longer than some of the keyboard jokers here giving the guy a hard time for being a successful artist and individual.
That syncopation during the song intro is so fire! Always gets me.
This song still pumps me up everytime I hear it. Pumps me up so much I want to beat the crap out of all the haters here talking smack about Peter...
This song was absolutely inspired. Too many people have been motivated by it.
Looks like a purple Peter Criss
Hilarious! Good one, absolutely!
Indeed
"Beth I hear you calling, but I can't come home right now. DAT-DAT DAT DAT-DAT DAT DAT-DAT DAT DAAAA".
Yeah. He and Peter oughtta get together and go bowling.
I was thinking basically the same thing.
Jim Peterik, one of the best composers in rock history, tremendous guy also. .love his backing vocals especially on the Vital Signs Survivor album. Excellent album
Even if he only had a " one hit wonder", I wouldn't mind 35 years plus of royalties. Do the math wise guys.
If that one hit helped inspire many many others to reach their potential? That is worth a lot! Hell if I'd come up with something like that, I would be satisfied in life.
@@wolfen26 I would rather never have to work another day in my life
It's good to see someone get to the point where nobody can touch their dignity. This guy really did it him and his wife live a very happy life in a beautiful place and he's proud of his life.
Outside of EOTT, check out the Survivor albums Vital Signs and When Seconds Count. Jam-packed with GREAT songs.
Damn, that guy is loaded. Just that guitar collection alone is literally worth a fortune.
Best song ever
Good song, yes .... "Best song ever" ??? ... Far from it.
great story behind the song.
My favourite so far. I love that he goes ALL OUT! He's living the dream.
Fyi he has written and produced a lot of hit songs. He is by no means a one hit, one band wonder.
@Vox Daze Google it. Heavy metal, hold on loosely, vehicle, and burning heart were all hits and he has worked with a lot of bands.
Wonderful guy, down to earth.
Wow!! He must have had an amazing agent and royalties contract?? That one song still giving him dough?
David G do you really believe that one song bought him all that. He has plenty of other hits. This video is only about that specific hit Eye of the Tiger.
@@val13c59 Doesn't even need any other hit after writing a song like that. How many times is this song still being played on radio across the world after 35 years is anyone's guess :P
Wow- his guitar collection is awesome, it´s like a candy shop. The riff is history like smoke on the water.
