  • In the early 80s this Survivor co-founder Jim Peterik came home for Lunch and checked his answering machine. He couldn’t believe his ears, Sylvester Stallone asked him to call him right back. He thought it was someone trying to prank him. but when he called back it was really him… Sly Stallone wanted unknown band Survivor to write the Anthem to a sequel to one of the greatest franchises ever, Rocky 3-apparently Queen had turned down the use of their #1 hit Another Bites the Dust… In a very fun interview, Jim tells us how he and Frankie Sullivan wrote the Eye of the Tiger for the opening montage and went to #1 for 6 weeks because Stallone was willing to give his rookie band the chance even though they’d never had a hit. How they created the perfect 80s classic rock anthem that still rules.

One thing that I did learn was, that there are timely songs and there are timeless songs. Anyway, I will enjoy interpreting other people's songs, performing these in my own way.

I was a cross country runner in high school when this song came out. I had a friend who made a college football team that needed to run 2 miles in a curtain time limit to stay on the team. He was a big offensive line man that could push a mach truck, but struggled with distance running. After my practice every day I would meet him and we would go running. Our theme was The Eye of the Tiger because of the song and movie. Day after day we would talk about it, then run. It was amazing the progress he made. Weeks later he called me to thank me for helping him stay on the team because he ran under the time line. He said he sang that song over and over until he crossed the line. I am now a coach and have been for almost 4 decades, and I still use that song to motivate athletes to this day. Love that song!

Music is its own energy, its own spirit. Moments in life have their magic. Sometimes they combine in one. People can snicker, but "Eye of the Tiger" is one of those moments of magic. You'll never have that exact same magic again. That's not to detract from other moments. They're all special and some may be even better than "Eye of the Tiger." But as they mentioned, when you have a song that literally energies people at their lowest to keep going and survive -- that is _magic_ !
I'll just say I've had a few moments in time I mentally played "Eye of the Tiger" in my head. In fact, there was one time in early high school I was being picked on and shoved around again. I was the small, poor brainy kid most of us know. The others brought out the beatbox to play "Eye of the Tiger" so their local bully could be inspired to "put me in my place." Believe it or not, I was the one who walked off. Heh. AND was sent to the principal's office for "fighting." Two week suspension. Totally worth it. It was the last time that happened.

A few years back Survivor was to play at a festival where I was a stage hand. They had some problems on the road that caused them to cancel and the festival hired Skid Row to fill the spot. During set up the morning of the festival the Skid Row guitar tech started playing Eye of the Tiger after setting up one of the guitars. The stage hands and road crew all started playing air guitar and drums and singing along as they went about their tasks of readying for the show. It was great fun and a testament to the popularity of the song.

The Eye of the Tiger has to be one of the best songs ever written. Even when I saw the movie for the first time, and yes I saw it in the theatre at least five times, it was the eighties after all, I was amazed just how much the song fit into the movie. My buddies and I argued with each other as to which came first.
This song still has the energy of the movie. It still makes me pumped, it still makes me feel the same as I did after I saw the movie the first time. I came out of the movie believing I could take on the world. To this day, there has never been a movie that made me feel the same way.
Now that I know the story I am so thankful that Queen turned him down. While I love Queen, they are one of my favourite bands, and I love We Are the Champions, there is no way it could have done the movie justice.
If they had gotten the rights, it would in my opinion, it would have ruined the movie. The feeling, the heart of the movie would not have been the same, and with Rocky 3 that feeling you got was the movie.
Personally I believe Eye Of The Tiger was robbed at the Oscars. While Up Where We Belong was a good song, it didn’t support the movie as well as Eye Of The Tiger did.

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 it does doesn’t it. Dave Bickler is certainly an underrated singer. He, and the band of course, should have been much bigger than they were. He and Survivor certainly did their fair share of movies.
It seemed that if Kenny Loggins couldn’t do a song for a movie, Dave was waiting behind door number two. Just look at the list of movies did, they were on fire, yet they for some reason never got the credit that was due. Seriously, they should be right up there with Journey and the likes.
It was to bad he had to leave the band in 83, he had polyps on his throat and after the surgery he had to let it heal for a few years before he sang again. That must have been a real low point if his life. Especially since Jimi Jamison did such a good job with Rocky Four and Karate Kid.
Plus I Can’t Hold Back, god I loved that song, and yes there was a girl for that song too. It didn’t top the charts, but I still thing it’s an amazing song.
While those songs and soundtracks were great, it wasn’t Dave. Jimi was good, but to me without Dave I considered them a different band. Dave just seemed to connect more with the songs he did.

Survivor is one of my favorite bands of all time. I think the reason they didn’t get more hits and recognition has to do with the length of time between albums, especially after their blockbuster 1984 album “Vital Signs”. It was a full two years before they released “When Seconds Count,” and another two years before they released “Too Hot to Sleep.” Not taking shots at Frankie Sullivan, but I think he’s very much a perfectionist and wants everything just perfect. It’s one quality that makes the band so amazing, but the average person likely forgets about them and moves on. I certainly think the saying, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good” applies in their situation. They also weren’t very accessible (especially for someone from southeast Idaho) and didn’t do a lot of press as a band. “Caught in the Game” is still on regular rotation for me.
