Special thanks to RL who sent me an email and gave me some suggestions! I appreciate it! (Please comment if you would like for me to share your name!)
=== Also, video portion had to be removed, which is not a problem. Please continue to support your artist as possible - this is about education and I am happy to do it! You are always welcome to support me by either a donation, share, comment, etc. All engaging and meaningful interactions (family-friendly channel) are welcome. ===
This reaction was brought to you by... you! Thank you for your kind comments and interaction - we all can grow through conversation, patience, and understanding. I appreciate all your feedback!
Also, because it is hard for me to think on the spot at times, the modes I was referring to were Dorian (1-2-b3-4-5-6-b7) and Phrygian (1-b2-b3-4-5-b6-b7)and the harmonic minor approach of b6 to natural-7. Those of you who are better-versed at modes (and very specific modes that are extended beyond the typical ones that we learn in school) and scales can assist as well - I am only able to break it up a bit in this area from time to time and will usually default to what I hear.
    Thanks!
    - Thou

Dimash presented a song with a Kazakh folk instrument at the Grand opening of the International Competition of Young Performers "New Wave-2021" in Sochi, Russia.
    "Stranger"
    Music - Igor Krutoy
    Lyrics - Sharon Vaughn
Arranger - Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greece) and Yerlan Bekchurin (Kazakhstan)
The idea to add kobyz to the new song came to Dimash after he first heard the melody "Stranger". He decided that the folk instrument would fit perfectly into the song, giving it an exciting sound. The performer of the kobyz part is Olzhas Kurmanbek.

    Lyrics:
    New ground
    Far as I can see
    New ground
    Underneath my feet
    Stranger
    In a stranger’s land
New chance to know who I am
    If I have the strength
    To begin again
Somewhere in my heart in ancient times, I wandered
Through these valleys, I have climbed among these hills
Faces from a past I’m haunted by their mem’ries
Lives and loves I’ve lost I feel them in me still
    New ground
    Far as I can see
    New ground
    Underneath my feet
    Stranger
    In a stranger’s land
New chance to know who I am
    If I have the strength
    To begin again
Melodies I’ve never heard I now am singing
The feel of swords I must have carried long ago
Fire was branded on my skin though there’s no scarring
Burning in my blood the distant spirits flow
    New ground
    Far as I can see
    New ground
    Underneath my feet
    Stranger
    In a stranger’s land
New chance to know who I am
    If I have the strength
    To begin again

Kobyz is a traditional Kazakh instrument which Dimash insisted be used in the song. The pianist is reknowned Russian composer Igor Krutoy who came out of semi retirement to work with Dimash. Kazakhstan having been part of the former USSR, Russian artists, music and collabs were common place. Dimash grew up on hearing Maestro Igor's music and they have collaborated often since Igor heard Dimash sing Sinful Passion. If Igor is at the piano, the music is his composition.

Igor Krutoy is from Haivoron, Ukraine. Born July 29,1954. He's father worked in a factory in Haivoron when Igor grew up. But... He is peoples artist of Russia 1996,and people's artist of Ukraine 2011. He is now a promoting music producer in Russia. Why people say he's from Russia is a mystery. 👍 Love from Norway 🇳🇴

@@elisabethstermo9396 People say that Igor is from Russia because he himself has severed all ties with his home country, Ukraine. He studied in Russia, where he developed his career and became very rich. I don't know if he wrote any songs in his native language. Ukraine last year has put Krutoy's name on the list of hostile Russian oligarchs who should be subject to sanctions. The latter probably proves Igor's connections.

Dimash & his father (Kanat) met Igor Krutoy at an event in Italy. Dimash was invited by Igor to perform at New wave where he performed Sinful Passion. Dimash & Igor confirmed their first meeting (In Italy) on the "Hello Andrey" Russian Talk show in 2019. At New Wave, Igor Krutoy was in front applauding/standing after Dimash's performance. Igor is not always at the piano when Dimash performs one of his songs, this is especially true at his Solo Concerts. Igor has attended & performed with Dimash in 2019 at his Solo Concert in Kazakhstan.

That Kazakh instrument is called KOBYZ. It is an ancestral instrument, used by the wise and referents to ward off evil spirits, formerly its two strings were made with a horse's tail.
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe storyteller Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. Furthermore, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The ancient outlook and propriety towards its instruments and music was constantly maintained in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing Kobyz. Greetings from Panama.

Olimpico?

I am humbled by your comment. Thank you so much for your insight - yes, his musicianship is very authentic and I am so glad that he approaches it with purpose without losing integrity or taking away from the stylistic needs of the intended genre (meaning, it's contemporary so he addresses that within the arrangement but still keeps his technique without sacrificing it in such a way that it sounds off or wrong).
      Thank you!

I really love your appreciation for the ENTIRE musical performance Dimash gives us. I have watched a lot of first reactioners to Dimash, and your first reaction to him is one of my favorites.
When I started watching this one and noticed the video wasn't going to be present, I thought I may not enjoy it as much. Since I've watched his performance over a 100+ times, it didn't really matter because I could visually remember every moment.
I love how you recognize all the important tiny elements involved in creating entire musical effect Dimash gives us.

That is the premiere of this song: Maestro Igor Krutoy and Dimash Qudaibergen have created the really unique song in English with enchanting oriental melodies. “It was Dimash’s talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience... I don’t see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way”. - Krutoy said. (dimashnews)
A Dear hits the nail on the head with this statement: “These are the voices of the world singing the tragedy of human migration forced by tragic circumstances.”
Igor Krutoy (Krutoy means 'Cool', *1954 in Ukraine SSR). He lives and works in Moscow/ Russia. He is singer, a world- famous composer and music titan in Russia (billionaire). His family is in the US now. Krutoy came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018. They are friends and have a father-son relationship.
Dimash said also in an interview about the collaboration with Igor Krutoy that it is important to him that the songs are written in such a way that there is room for variations ... so every performance of a song is a surprise and every Dear can choose his favorite presentation... I can not decide.
The lyrics were written by Mary Sharon Vaughn (*1947, American musician, songwriter and producer. She writes hits for famous singers around the world, including Lara Fabian)

I think Dimash’s collaborations with Igor Krutoy really explore and showcase not only his range but his range of techniques and styles. I also think Krutoy’s compositions are so innovative and unusual-maybe if I were more familiar with Russian neoclassical music I wouldn’t think so but I love his work.
I’m not sure which of Dimash’s songs to recommend next. Ogni Pietra shows off more of his classical technique, Sinful Passion is what enticed Krutoy to come out of retirement and work with him, Ave Maria is just flat gorgeous, and just for fun I really enjoy his duet with Li Yugang, who sings female roles with the Chinese opera (they sing Drunken Concubine and Diva Dance, and Dimash plays around a little with extended techniques-very interesting mashup of musical styles and techniques).
Anyway, whenever you’re in a Dimash state of mind, there’s lots to enjoy. I’m so glad you’re checking him out.

Thank you very much for your very interesting and educational reaction. Dimash always has a clear vision of how he wants to approach the different parts of a song or what the song is asking for to be approached. It is said that he can be pretty stubborn about that when anybody else suggests to do it differently. Dimash doesn’t want to show off his vocals, he wants to convey the message and the emotions of the song through his voice. There are several songs where he doesn’t use his crazy range and they aren’t less beautiful or less technically perfect. For example Qaragym-ai, Makhabbat ber magan (Give me love) or Amanat. These are all Kazakh songs in his mother tongue. Just as his own composition Unforgettable Day (with a bit more vocal showing off). I think all the songs in his mother tongue are even more beautiful and perfect because it’s easier for him to convey the content/emotions of the song. He doesn’t need to translate the lyrics, he doesn’t need to think about correct pronunciation, he can just feel it and let it out.

Here is playing the best Kobys player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck.
This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys, Qobyz or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the mother (prototype) of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ruclips.net/video/PqxhtBecVeg/видео.html )
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

I also wonder if this tradition is specific to Kazakh, because there are some (albeit, small) parallels between the tradition of the instrument being the voice of ancestors and the oral/music traditions of the Hmong people. I can't verify it at the moment but I may need to consult some experts in this area regarding my own people's history since we were a nomadic group of people.
      Thanks again!

The kobyz does not have a fingerboard, so it is using floating harmonics where the strings above and below the finger pressure are both vibrating. It makes a lot more complex frequency interactions.

    • @bass2yang
      @bass2yang  Год назад +1

I can hear it. I feel like not having a fingerboard is partially why those subharmonics/distortion artifacts are more natural to create? I have some studies and examples on my own channel regarding the use of extended techniques as it relates to voice and there are a lot of crossover into the strings and winds.

You should take a listen to what he did in the middle of the song at that performance. It is vocals like you have never heard before, very different from this version. Also, Dimash was ill with rhinitis at the time, and left the show to have a procedure done. That is why he didn't hold that last note as long as here.
