Nicely done Andy. Hope you enjoyed it. Back then all I had was a budget Spalding driver but it performed about the same. I think I'll start looking for some " vintage clubs" myself!!
Nice fun video Andy I used to play Wilson Staff persimmon driver and 4 Wood they were stunning to look at and even better to play the feel of the middle was sensational. In my humble opinion today's equipment is a a lot easier to find the head today than in the wood woods and bladed irons era, alsi the balls have gotten so much better now than then. Keep up the good work mate cheers Peter.
I really love these old style clubs . I had a new set as a kid and learned how to play using them . They have a feel and sound like no other club . The big surprise came from your video when I saw there was only about thirty yards difference . I would have never guessed . Great video !!!!
Whoa! Man that was a blast from the past! I still have the Driver, 3, 4, and 7 wood in that set and Ping Eye 2 irons as well! Bringing back some fond memories there Andy. Loved the video. Keep up the good work sir.
I started with wood clubs In the late 1970s and bought into the hype of the oversized metals in the late 1990s. After 20 years of struggling to hit decent drives I went back to the real woods and I hit them so much better than I ever hit the metals. I was never able to get anymore distance with the metals than I did with the woods and the feel is so much more acute, not to mention hearing that "crack" when the wood meets the ball.
I have two persimmon drivers in the garage - Toney Penna and Ben Hogan. Great feel when you got one out of the screws, when face inserts were screwed in, but painful when you didn't. One can only wonder where the game would be today if metal headed woods had been declared illegal when they first came out.
At his age I can’t believe he never hit a club like that? Ping eye 2’s were my first set I really advanced my game with and i still have every club. 1-3-5-7-9 wood 2 iron thru sw and the answer putter. With the zz lite shafts they were the most consistent feeling clubs right thru the set I’ve ever owned. If he could find a sleeve of balls from that era his numbers would jump up 20-30 yards. Today’s balls are designed to balloon of the new springlike faces and don’t react the same and stick on the face as long as the older balls did, the balata ball used to feel like I was whipping the ball 270 with no effort with the eye 2 driver....man I love those clubs!
Good stuff...thanks! I have a Hogan Apex 1, solid persimmon with brass back weight, you know gotta move that CG back, 4 screw insert. Just pulled it out of the garage to re-visit. If I remember correctly, PING was one of the very first to move to laminate construction. Technology moves on :)
Ping ZZ Lite Shaft it's on the lable Andy, they were the shaft of choice for tour pro's back in the late 70's along with Hogan Apex. You must be new to golf or I am getting old😉
Wow - 1983 - Awesome video - those were the clubs I played with - almost forgot what they were like. I averaged 240 yards with the driver back then and could get a roll out for another 30 or 40 yards on a great hit. Low spin on them. I wish I could average 240 now instead of the 210 with the modern equipment - nostalgia - oh to have the muscle of the 35-year-old. lol
My mates and I do an annual event where we play a retro day. We play it in a medal round at our club and all the clubs used need to be at least 30 years old. I use a set of Hogan Persimmon woods and a set of Wilson Bullet Back irons from 1976. We dress in period correct clothes for the era of clubs and have a great laugh. It has become that popular the club this year is going to run the day as an actual club event on a Sunday
I started playing with a set of Wilson bladed clubs and Slazenger woods. They don't hold any great sentiment for me, give modern golf clubs any day a lot easier than the old ones.
This illustrates perfectly that modern driver/wood heads, have for most mortals, had a bigger improvement over consitancy & repeatability of shots than distance, also that steel shaft swing speeds are lower. Steel shafts are heavier and flex less so slow your swing speed & lower spin/flight, but offer more accuracy, modern stiff tip shafts offer similar properties without the weight/speed issue, just remember to loft up.
Loved it memory lane. my first clubs where Pinseeker forged and built back home (UK) still have a 3 wood. good review. I still have my 1996 Mizuno Faldo ID irons the only things I have from back home in the UK. played 2 rounds last year with them and shot my 2 lowest rounds of the year!
Andy PLEASE review the Cleveland HB Launcher irons. Lots of buzz around these and I'd love to see and hear what the Average Golfer has to say about them. Thanks. Mich
Thanks for posting this thought provoking video. In my opinion the equipment we play today is not a whole lot different than we played in the 1980's. With the exception of the length, weight, design, material used for the shafts of our clubs. Other than that we are still playing blades or cavity backs. The driver heads are bigger today but as you demonstrated in this video that really doesn't matter. Fairway woods and Hybrids (just another name for a fairway wood 😕) hasn't changed much at all. The Ball and Course Agronomy has really improved dramatically, in the last 20 years. Even the least expensive ball on the market today rivals the very best Balata Balls of the 1980's! All the courses where I live greens/fairways are playable nearly year round!
I bought one of these in 1993, won a long drive at an outing at 288 yrds in 1998- - must have been a miracle. The prize was a Wilson big red. never could handle the fat head driver - still struggling and using a Callaway mini driver as much as a regular driver - ho-hum
I had the Karsten 1 set of woods 1,3amd 5 wood they were huge back in the 80's my swing speed back then on a early speed monitor was 104 43" steel shaft now at 66 years old I am still at 104 mph. on trackman longer and lighter shaft. No help to me though played to a 4 HDC. back then now a 11 HDC. Also had the beryllium eye 2 irons which I just got another set on E Bay and they still feel great.
Very cool comparison. I love all of these new videos you guys (youtubers) are making comparing new equipment to old. Just another bit of evidence that the USGA/R&A should leave golf alone. The biggest thing that's changed since the good ol days of golf has been the golfer's.
Eric Briggs I think the biggest thing that's changed in golf is the overall quality of the green and fairway surfaces. I can go to any Municipal Course in the Houston, TX area where I live and find that to be true at any time of the year now. That wasn't true in the 1970's and 1980's. The equipment they use to maintain the courses today is just that good. What has the condition of the courses you have played when you started playing the game until now?
Great video. Would love to hit that club. Now I know that golf balls have been much of a bit topic lately. But I'm curious as to what that old driver can do with with a golf ball that was used in 83? Is there a ball with similar compression that can be used to test? Bc we all know that in 83 Seve and Norman were carrying it iver 290 with that style club and that era's golf ball. Thoughts?
Nice one Andy made me smile comparing old to new, so you can have a Ping Eye 2 for £10 or your can have a G400 for £400 with the gain of 20 yards!! Why pay £390 for 20 yards!! Just shows that the manufactuers hype works really well.
It would be good to see you hit say a ten year old set of cavity backs against a current set just to compare and see whether a modern 7 iron really is just an older six/five iron.
I wish you had some old Balata Balls to hit with that old gem. I always got good carry distance with my wooden drivers. The problem I had was with the overall weight of the club especially, towards the end of a match with some money on the line. The light weight of the new driver heads and shafts is the real difference maker. They are simply easier to physically swing. The size of the club head is negligible if you have good swing mechanics as you proved in this video.
Great video. I like the occasional comparison videos of old to new stuff to break things up. Would be curious to also see comparison of other elements of tournament golf that affect performance such as course setup/ maintenance and the like.
My brother in law is a great striker of the ball and he keeps his old driver and irons in the garage. He practises with them to sharpen his (already great) game. Perhaps you should think about marketing old kit for practice Andy?
It’s great to look back. Those Ping eye woods were the club of the day well on the pricey side £300+. As a junior I could only dream. Technology has moved on, I mean we don’t drive Ford Sierra’s anymore.
I certainly remember playing with persimmon and there was no better feeling than hitting the ball solidly in the center of the face. I enjoyed the video and would suggest doing more comparisons between the older and newer clubs. How about a comparison between Ping Eye irons and the G700s?
Brings back memories. Before that laminated head were solid wood persimmon heads. Slamming Sam Snead would regularly push the 300 yard markers, of course they had different swings. Decent numbers Andy, surpringly good and not a turbulators or dragonfly in sight.
I got the same Ping 5 wood in 1987 for my 30th Birthday & it cost £99 !. (So much for Today's expensive Clubs eh ?)... Played with it for Years & loved the sound/feel....
I certainly wouldn't have paid £99 for it but as I said, "It was a B'day Present". Plus, the Relative that gave me it used to wear a Trench coat when they went, "Shopping".. ( He wouldn't have paid £99 either !).
the shaft should be the ZZ Light! i played the 3 wood well in to the new millenium, it was fantastic! Ping was much more forgiving than the Persimmon ones if u ever get the chans to try one .
Best driver i ever used back in the 80s and early 90s...along with the eye2 irons! Put these on the tour and youll find out who are the proper golfers are
Love the head 2 head, would of loved wound balls with old club and tp5 the new club, but still very interesting. All clubs are good out of middle aren’t they , you just had to the sweet spot far more back in the day!
Hi Andy, memories memories, back then I played off 3.6 and with proper blades I can’t even remember if there was any cavity backs(probably were around then) just can’t remember any of the lads using cavity backs that’s all, and no lob wedge to boot! Never mind the old Titleist professional 90 golf ball as well, now I’m almost 60 handicap 6.3 at present hopefully coming down this year! So my question is how many golfers who played that equipment for say 10 years and over have a lower handicap now yes I’m older and yes the body can’t do what it did but with all this help we have now I’m bloody worse off handicap wise! How many of your viewers are better golfers now than back in the day? I’m worse so selling my clubs and getting some bowls or darts for Christmas 😂😂 #Tagers
I have a ping 5 wood it's pretty rear it's a tsi old school 5 wood it's a touring one you can see Thor the back of it you can see the tsi that 5 wood is pretty unusual i not ever seen that one on RUclips i wonder have you ever seen that one
Great fun to see this kind of video, thank you. I'm one of those former golfers (from the 60's through the 90's) that used those old time clubs. But watching the vid I noticed that you hardly stopped talking when hitting the old club...nice swing by the way. I don't know about you but I do know that if I'm talking, or even thinking about talking, while lining up to swing or swinging there is no way of making a full contact hit...concentration being elsewhere. Did you talk your way through swinging the new club too and get those numbers or were you concentrating? Just looking for an accurate report. Thank you.
BD can't see a problem with talking while hitting, people are too precious about a bit of noise on the course. I'm regularly having a conversation while hitting and it doesn't cause me any issues it actually frees me up to not be over thinking. I don't talk while playing partners are hitting but I honestly have no issue of a conversation while I'm playing. Sudden unexpected noises are different though.
Interesting video, but you are getting 236yds with the old driver but a modern ball, would be interested to see your figures with a ball from 30 years ago and the old driver, would it be safe to say that a single figure golfer from back then would be a better player than a single figure golfer of today
Love it .The good old days, don't forget that it was around this time that we adopted the American larger ball so it's highly likely that this smaller head was used with smaller ball, what about testing hickory shafted mashies next?(I've got one but it's left handed!)
david groom just Googled it David (i was curious) and agree the large ball was adopted by the R and A in 1990 I thought it was earlier, I started as a junior in early to mid 1980s and I seem to remember having both sizes in my bag, was there a transition period where both allowed? Either way it's confirmed when this driver came out you (unless across the pond) were hitting at a smaller target with a smaller club face!
James Bond in 1974 the ball was standardised for the Open - no more small ball. So from the mid 1970s you saw the odd small ball but everyone was playing the 1.68 inch ball.
Never hit one before? How old do you think you are 😎 The acid test is 2 golfers similar handicap- p1 played modern clubs balls footwear & p2 plays 30yr old clubs balls and shoes (where possible) Head to head see who comes out on top by how much!
Enjoyed the video but a more comparable test would be test against 2018 driver against the first metal/titanium headed driver . I'm not sure what it was tho ? The IST ?
Always good to see these tests. There's an article re: Padraig Harrington hitting 1959 WIlson irons. Worth a read because the differences, even for a pro are not what you might expect. www.golf.com/equipment/i-can-break-par-strong50-year-old-clubsstrong-no-problem The wooden driver is beautiful, modern clubs are not. I mean they look like those plastic clubs you'd buy for your 3 year old kids to hit in the back garden.
Have a hard time believing shaft length are same unless your g 400 is 43 inches??? So you lost about 20 yards between drivers. Factor in the old ball and you probably lose another 8-10.
“I think they feel horrible” - you have to hit it somewhere near the centre............ the ball is the biggest difference. Middle it with the. 1980s Ping and you won’t lose more than 10 yards or so.
Interesting comparison. One note, sweetspots are all the same size in all clubs. It's the area of forgiveness that is greater these days.
Correct forgiveness
Nicely done Andy. Hope you enjoyed it. Back then all I had was a budget Spalding driver but it performed about the same. I think I'll start looking for some " vintage clubs" myself!!
Nice fun video Andy I used to play Wilson Staff persimmon driver and 4 Wood they were stunning to look at and even better to play the feel of the middle was sensational. Agree with you the game has been made easier and more enjoyable for many golfers with the new clubs
Had one of them bought from Bude Golf Club in 1985. Used to go like a rocket "when I was young " . Was revolutionary at the time .
I play with a ping zing set of irons and maple woods. I hit them well and people love the sound of the woods.
I really love these old style clubs . I had a new set as a kid and learned how to play using them . They have a feel and sound like no other club . The big surprise came from your video when I saw there was only about thirty yards difference . I would have never guessed . Great video !!!!

I may be doing course vlog with the Eye 2 irons shortly!
That would be cool!
If you hit the middle, which just needs accuracy and consistency, it's easy to hit the Ping Eye 2 Driver 245 to 255 carry.
Thanks, Andy, for a fascinating video. The G400 max is a great club and longer than your old Ping but not OTT longer.
When that old Ping driver was new, 250 yards was a good drive and the longest drivers on tour were averaging around 280.
I started with wood clubs In the late 1970s and bought into the hype of the oversized metals in the late 1990s. After 20 years of struggling to hit decent drives I went back to the real woods and I hit them so much better than I ever hit the metals. “Someone said they feel lovely, I think they feel horrible’’ 😂😂😂
Tell us how you really feel Andy
as diplomatic as ever!
I still have my Ping Eye 2 Black. I loved it back in the day. Used to drive it close to 250 back then.
How far do you hit your current driver Jay?
Hi Andy, now I hit it 240. But, I am 30 years older than I was back then.
The game was certainly tougher with these clubs

just ordered G400 SFT....now waiting for courses to open! cheers Sully
Great vlog Andy
Takes me back
I still have my Mizuno persimmon headed driver took it out on the course last year had a shocker but good fun
They are tough to find the middle

Enjoyed that 👍 There is definitely a difference but you showed they're not quite as scary as people think they are.
Definitely playable but need to be finding that small sweet spot
Really enjoy these types of videos.
More to come Paul

Enjoyed this experiment, seems the additional focus requred to find the sweetspot means more accurate drives.
Thats a good point
Teeuplo feat. Average Golfer that's probably why we tend to be more accurate with our fairway woods.
Great video. I like the occasional comparison videos of old to new stuff to break things up. Would be curious to also see comparison of other elements of tournament golf that affect performance such as course setup/ maintenance and the like.
Trying to do a few diff vids this year
Teeuplo feat. Average Golfer It's appreciated! Keep 'em coming!
Good video Andy and well hit with that old club!! Think you'll be sticking with the modern clubs though
Can you do a Titleist 983 series 360cc driver vs Current? I'd love to see if there's a big difference right before industry switched to 460cc .
Not sure if I would fancy hitting it with cold hands on an 8am tee time !
I certainly remember playing with persimmon and there was no better feeling than hitting the ball solidly in the center of the face. I enjoyed the video and would suggest doing more comparisons between the older and newer clubs. How about a comparison between Ping Eye irons and the G700s?
I am doiing something with Eye 2 irons shortly
Remember using this type of driver back in my teens. No wonder I used to hit low runners with it 😀
Thats so true, the 1st few practice shots I hit off a low tee flew like bullets 10 feet in the air!
These older clubs weren't designed to hit today's ball. Grab some balata balls to know what "off the screws" really felt like :-)
Brings back memories. Before that laminated head were solid wood persimmon heads. Slamming Sam Snead would regularly push the 300 yard markers, of course they had different swings. Decent numbers Andy, surpringly good and not a turbulators or dragonfly in sight.
I was impressed because off camera it wasnt so good!
Came good under pressure. 10/10
I got the same Ping 5 wood in 1987 for my 30th Birthday & it cost £99 !. (So much for Today's expensive Clubs eh ?)... Played with it for Years & loved the sound/feel....
John Lawson with inflation £99 would be about £260 today
I certainly wouldn't have paid £99 for it but as I said, "It was a B'day Present". Plus, the Relative that gave me it used to wear a Trench coat when they went, "Shopping".. ( He wouldn't have paid £99 either !).
I will be in Edinburgh on Sunday and need a chauffeur....what you up to?!
Would that be Sunday April 1st ?.... I'm no, "Fool" Andy. ( Just a "Bampot" )....
the shaft should be the ZZ Light! i played the 3 wood well in to the new millenium, it was fantastic! Ping was much more forgiving than the Persimmon ones if u ever get the chans to try one .
I believe the Ping woods were laminated.
@@DanielSmith-ps1yz Correct !
Best driver i ever used back in the 80s and early 90s...along with the eye2 irons! Put these on the tour and youll find out who are the proper golfers are
I agree and same with irons, I think the pros should have to play blades
Teeuplo feat. Average Golfer
aye! by the way the shafts are zz lite... stiff but light weight. brilliant shaft, especially in the irons
Love the head 2 head, would of loved wound balls with old club and tp5 the new club, but still very interesting. All clubs are good out of middle aren’t they , you just had to the sweet spot far more back in the day!
Yes I did have aDunlop 65 but it was oval shape!

Thxs Martin, will play a few more rounds with both clubs but I think so yes.

david groom just Googled it David (i was curious) and agree the large ball was adopted by the R and A in 1990 I thought it was earlier, I started as a junior in early to mid 1980s and I seem to remember having both sizes in my bag, was there a transition period where both allowed? Either way it's confirmed when this driver came out you (unless across the pond) were hitting at a smaller target with a smaller club face!
James Bond in 1974 the ball was standardised for the Open - no more small ball. So from the mid 1970s you saw the odd small ball but everyone was playing the 1.68 inch ball.
Never hit one before? How old do you think you are 😎
The acid test is 2 golfers similar handicap- p1 played modern clubs balls footwear & p2 plays 30yr old clubs balls and shoes (where possible)
Head to head see who comes out on top by how much!
Enjoyed the video but a more comparable test would be test against 2018 driver against the first metal/titanium headed driver . I'm not sure what it was tho ? The IST ?
I have a club called the Wilson Whale which was a big driver in its day
Shaft is only 43 inches long... Compare to 3 wood
Goodness I used to have one of those
No new videos in a week and a half! What's going on Andy!! Hope you haven't thrown in the towel....
could you re shaft it with a modern shaft to see how it performed ?
not me sorry
Always good to see these tests. There's an article re: Padraig Harrington hitting 1959 WIlson irons. Worth a read because the differences, even for a pro are not what you might expect. www.golf.com/equipment/i-can-break-par-strong50-year-old-clubsstrong-no-problem
The wooden driver is beautiful, modern clubs are not. I mean they look like those plastic clubs you'd buy for your 3 year old kids to hit in the back garden.
I’d have got plenty of air shots with this when starting out!!
It was a tougher game back then
I like it!
If club technology did half of what it has said since the 80 till now if be hitting to Georgia by now
I’ve got 1-3-5 in those £20
For the three of them .
laminated head so not as solid as those made from a solid block of persimmon
Classic in its day and very expensive. 🏌🏿
Great Par how much was it? I was born in 1990 so wouldn’t know 😂😂
Cornwall1888 mate I cannot remember exactly. It was an exotic purchase at the time here in Oz. Cheers
same ;)
So, 35 years on and your longest drive is less than 10 yards different than you Gmax AVG. 😀
but a huge diff in forgiveness
If they made a wooden club the same size as a modern one, I wonder what it would be like?
Have a hard time believing shaft length are same unless your g 400 is 43 inches??? So you lost about 20 yards between drivers. Factor in the old ball and you probably lose another 8-10.
Not much init
Sorry, but you don’t have the swing or the game to enjoy the masterpiece that is in your hands. “Feels Horrible” -
That’s a clueless statement
Should hit off the deck like a 5wood
thinned bullet!
Come on mate you got to show us where the ball is going it’s getting boring
“I think they feel horrible” - you have to hit it somewhere near the centre............ the ball is the biggest difference. Middle it with the. 1980s Ping and you won’t lose more than 10 yards or so.
you saying I dont find the centre.......your right!
