P trap leaking at connection
If you have a kitchen p trap leaking under your kitchen sink, and you look to see the p trap leaking at nut connection, it is due to the column of water that is always present inside the kitchen sink p trap. So the problem arise from that p-trap nut itself and the connection of the p trap outlet to the p trap arm.
Root cause of a leaky P Trap
Look on any kitchen p trap diagram, you'll see where the kitchen p-trap seal is located, the column of water that is always present in the p trap, that protects you from sewer gasses. Many people get a leaking p trap leaking at nuts and threads. That connection is always under water, and if it is not tightened perfectly straight and tight, you'll get p trap leaking at threads in no time.
changing p trap kitchen sink
Sometimes we have seen cases of a leaking p trap where the connection nut on the kitchen p trap installation is cracked, or the angled connection surfaces between the kitchen p-trap outlet and the p trap arm might have micro cracks forming, which allow the water to leak out of the trap seal. These are some of your common root causes for a leaky p trap.
p trap kitchen sink installation
People often complain that they look under the kitchen sink and see the p trap leaking from bottom side of the dip. What's really happening to cause the p-trap leaking kitchen sink is the water leaches out of the connection nut from the trap seal, you have a kitchen p trap leaking at threads and it it drips down the lower dip making the p trap leaking under sink everywhere.
replace kitchen p trap, yes you might have to
So if you have a leaking p trap and you find cracks, this video shows you how to replace the leaking kitchen p trap with a new one. If there are no cracks causing the p trap leaking at joint nuts where the p trap leak is , then try loosening the nuts, and re-seat the pipes, then tighten the P-trap connection nuts, make sure the threads are nice and tight, and retest. If you did everything right, you won't have a leaky p trap anymore. - Хобби

I like the overpowering background music! It rocks! It makes me want to line dance in outer space.
I always have to deal with these things, I am not a plumber just a home owner, but why do they suck so much! It’s 2020 can we not design a trap that doesn’t leak and isn’t finicky that every time your mother-in-law puts the dish soap back and bumps it, it will not leak?
@@bumstudios8817 welcome to 2020 tech:
My plumber stopped those leaks from ever having to happen to me.
After a sink block, while trying to unscrew the butted outlet of the P-trap and stripping every plastic ridge on the nut (possibly internal cracking 🙄from the vice I used because my wrenches & channellocks werent handling), I recalled that my plumber did something peculiar; he welded the the outlet end of the PVC P-Trap, where it connects to the tailpipe, and a flexigasket from the tailpipe to the wall. 🤠🔥👏
After unscrewing the inlet side of the P-trap by hand, I was able to completely detach all other pipe connections without a single tool. The whole thing is held together with tension... well fitted copper pipes with plenty of tight sleeve overlap, and easy-twist/tool-less brass fittings. The tailpipe connects to the house wall with flexible gasket, as it does to the anchored garbage disposal. So all I have to do is release the garbage disposal gasket first, and then there is range to easily yank the pipes from their sleeves, everything now pivoting off the wall gasket for added flexible movement.
SYSTEM:
Left sink basin--> garbage disposal--> large gasket with double-wire spring hose clamp--> 90' PVC connector welded to 1st inlet of brass cast Y-connector welded to copper down pipe running vertical down to P-Trap inlet with twist off/sleeve compression. Removed and cleaned.
Right sink basin has copper pipe running down to 90' brass connector welded to copper pipe running horizontally --> tension fit & sparringly sleeved to 2nd inlet of brass Y-pipe. I could visually inspect & snake that pipe all the way up to the Right Sink basket.
* It was annoying not being able to see the interior condition of the tailpipe exiting to wall, just the inlet side of the P-trap, which I easily enough snaked. BUT, had I been less lazy and taken the time, I could have unscrewed the adjustable tape hoseclamps holding the wall gasket to have done that, and I just didnt need to. 😊
* I had been initially worried to start the project and fail in resealing the outlet end of the P-trap. Had I known, his system was in place like this, I would have done this sooner & maintenance cleaned more often.
e.g. Mμ silicon will work too... it’s just a dumb set up though... why have a $#!++¥ solution like that when a simple design change would solve it.
great video but please don't add music, very distracting!

Very useful, but the music made it difficult to follow along
This. This is the explanation. Someone who talks about the damn direction of the damn gaskets.
😅 yes this is the dam one!!!
Just would like to compliment the man for putting up a superb instructional video in which he lets his confidence and expertise do the talking instead of a gimmicky and exaggerated personality. So many RUclipsrs act as if they are auditioning for the DIY channel.
It worked for me, thank you!
Ps. When I was sick with cancer I hired a handyman to install a sink. He installed the drain gasket inside the sink instead of below! It was a mess, no putty use! Thanks for guiding me to the RIGHT way!
Until about two hours ago, I had a P Trap with the slowest leak on the planet. It was driving me nuts ;o) I had watched your video sometime yesterday, and I woke up in the middle of the night knowing what to do and got started. When you said that the back part doesn't have a gasket and has to fit perfectly flat, that we should "make that guy happy" before dealing with the other connectors, both of which do have gaskets, I was thereby enlightened and able to stop the incredibly-slow-drip madness! I appreciate your help! Thank you jeffostroff!!
That's awesome dues congratulations on getting that fixed!
@@jeffostroff thank you people like you is what going make the world great !!!!! this helps so much
Where have you been all my life?
Thank you, Jeff
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Don't add music, can't hear you!!
Stop being extra
This is the best explanation I have seen. I have had a chronic problem with my sink's P trap leaking at the nut. Going to go back now, with this knowledge, and hopefully will have success.
Edit: It finally worked! One very helpful tip is how you showed there is no gasket in the nut. I had a plastic gasket type thing in the nut, and I took it out and now it doesn't leak. Thanks!
Glad it helped Bret!
Thank you for the most informative kitchen p trap RUclips vid ever. I especially appreciate the very commonsense info on why p traps leak so often. I'm 72, w/ arthritis in my hands. With your video, I can do it all except tightening. For that, I have friends, relative and neighbors. Again, thank you so much!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! My plastic P-trap had come apart over time in my RV with me shoving too much stuff around it in the cupboard. Now I understand how the gaskets work. All I had to do was get the gasket back in place and re-tighten the nut. You're a good teacher!
Congratulations on fixing that ptrap yourself and thanks for stopping by to watch our video we're glad we were able to help you.
Check out the Hepvo trap...it's much more appropriate for RVs.
Manufacturers don't uses them as they should because....profit.
I am SO glad that you put this video out. I had this exact problem. Thinking about it now, it makes perfect sense as that junction is set up in such a way as it has to be perfectly level so there is no gap. I get it now!! I haven't seen this critical point in other videos on this subject. The connection is not leaking after about 5 minutes - jury is still out as to whether it is fixed - but I think it's going to be ok. Thanks for putting this together. A lot easier and cheaper than getting a plumber over to the house!!
Awesome we also find that sometimes waiting overnight is when you'll see if there's going to be a problem so I would put down the Paper towel likely show there and just leave in and watch for any drops that appear on the paper towel.
Able to replace my bathroom trap for under five dollars! Thanks for showing us how to successfully do this and save money and frustration!
Awesome! Glad to help!
Wow. I am replacing a p trap, and was uneasy about the lack of a gasket at that union, but never considered the importance of perfect alignment to compensate. I've watched an awful lot of videos in this journey, and never seen this mentioned. Great video, thank you!
Hey thanks Jeff, from a newbie. You helped saved me money, time and frustration. And to add to that, my family is thankful, who has to put up with a cheap dad who is frustrated with this leak and hearing him grumble and groan about it. I especially like how you explained how it works. Appreciate the blessing. Thanks for helping those in need.
Glad I could help, and thanks for watching ER!
Thanks so much! I just fixed my pipes under my laundry sink because they were leaking. It was helpful when you said that the pipes needed to be leveled and I didn't need to TIGHTEN THEM WITH A WRENCH; LIKE I HAD. HAHAHA. So I went back untightened them and added a seal/gasket to one of the connections and that did it!
Great content...I couldn't get the gasket to work, but I saw how you did it and it's fixed. Thank you!!
thank you, been dealing with a leak for a year and found out that i was installing that rubber gasket wrong. now it's fixed for real
Leon, awesome, glad our video helped you! Yes a lot of other video creators just say put in the gasket, but they fail to show that it is indeed directional.
@@jeffostroff believe it or not, it was not a directional issue. i was sort of wedging/resting the gasket between the two pipe pieces and then fastening the connector. and it would actually kind of seal and not leak for a few weeks, until the garage disposal or some kind of movement will eventually knock it loose and leak. your video showed that the gasket was to ride up higher on the pipe, so it didn't require any sort of delicate balancing act to screw the knob. bought a few items off amazon through your link - thanks again
Mine is leaking from the connector in your right hand
Thank you guys. You just gave me much peace of mind. I fix a P-trap problem that was driving me crazy for a long time. I am sane again.
P-traps are mental issues waiting to happen!
YOU ARE A LIFE SAFER ! AFTER HOURS OF MESSING AROUND, YOU EXPLAINING THE THEORY AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE TRAP REALLY JUST HELPED THE FIX ! YOU ARE GODSENT ! LOVE YOU!
glad to help!
Thank you, this video just saved me $300. I was getting frustrated with a leaky P-trap and about ready to call in a plumber. Thanks to the handy tips in this video, I figured out my problem.
Thank you for the explanation! Things make sense and then become easy to understand and remember... I'll be careful so my P trap won't leak!
OMG! Thank you for the clear p trap demonstration! Been working on a pedestal sink for 3 weeks! Turns out I needed a 1/8" extension for drain pipe connection to existing p trap. Hard to see that small of a gap when lowering sink on pedestal, then reaching in to hand tighten. I needed to understand that p trap connection that DOESN'T use a washer! (I was adding one). Anyway, was here to see how to cut the new PVC extension pipe. Thank you for demonstration.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching Maria!
Lifesaver! I took apart the P-Trap, made sure it was well aligned, gave it an extra quarter with brute hand strength, and now no more leak!
I've also found that sometimes new P trap parts have residual flashing on the mating surface left over from the casting process. It helps seal the joint if you can remove the flashing with either a knife or fine sanding block. Make sure you don't deform the rest of the mating surface, though.
Yes I have seen that also I would be too afraid to send it I don't wanna change the shape of that connection even microscopically because it is so critical
@@jeffostroff You can sand it if you use very fine sandpaper and go around the mating surface, not up and down. As I'm sure you know, water will find a way if there is one. :)
Thanks for the thorough explanation of the seals and joints, etc. Probably one of the best demonstrations on RUclips....
Harold, I agree! Best explanation by far!
Jeff, Man!!! You are the Man! Thank you for the great explanation of the p-trap drain and the washers. I spent 3 hours trying to figure it out! Thank you Thank you!
Awesome glad to help out Donald and thanks for watching
HUGE HELP! I fixed my disposal around a year ago and forgot how the setup was.
Because of this video, I was able to fix my trap and other connections around. Not a drop of water now.
I installed a new plastic p trap because the old metal one was corroded and leaky. I spent an hour trying to get that middle joint to stop leaking. The trap came with three gaskets, so I figured one of them was for that joint. After watching this video, I tried without a gasket and it worked fine. I was misled by the manufacturer! Thanks for your help.
YES! saved another one! Congrats on fixing it yourself
Thank you Jeff you just saved my bathroom sink, my washer wasn't put on the right way the first time, and after watching your video I put it on the right way😊 now my sink don't leak anymore
Glad I could help thanks for watching Mary!
Thank you! I was able to fix a very strange configuration by watching your video over and over and over....
Awesome, saved another one! Glad to hear it worked out for you.
It was a detailed video explaining in details about the efficiency of every joint and nuts. Hats off👌
When I see a 15 minute video my head thinks No-oooo. I've learned more in the last few minutes than I would've watching shorter ones. Maybe it's a maths thing - thanks for your lesson in excellence. Thank you.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video!
Presentation problems aside I found this to be a very informative and useful video. I had a plumber visit not long ago who told me I'd installed a rubber gasket 'the wrong way around' but not WHY it was the wrong way around or how to fit it correctly like this video did. Also learned why a sink I had not used in a long while had begun to stink like a sewer!
Awesome glad to help out
If I have to leave the installation alone (unused) for a long time I tape a foil over the sink's outlet. This 1. lowers the evaporation rate and 2. serves as a seal against odors. Don't forget the overflow outlet!

Thank you so much. I spent hours trying to fix the connection after I had cleaned out hose from debris from my washing machine. It was leaking after i put back together but watching your video showed me how making sure the connection was correct near the s bend first was so important.
Glad it helped thanks for watching Margot!
Thank you so much. I have been trying to do this alone, and have done so a few times. Now I see what I have done wrong, and what to do. Only thing is now I have even more questions. I’m going to look through your videos for more answers. Really thank you for taking your time to help me.
I can’t tell you just how awesome your instructing capabilities are. The explanation of the parts and how they are used, as well as what occurs that causes your problem, was top-notch! Not being familiar with any part of what I’m about to do, I know I can after watching you. You should be a vocational institute instructor.
Glad it was helpful!
What an outstanding how-to video! You have a great way of explaining technical details so learners can easily understand. This was a huge help for me!
I'm so grateful for this video. Thank you very much. It makes me laugh to know the only thing I was doing wrong came down to precision of one of the nuts from the p-trap. I thought the cause was something much more serious. Again, so grateful and thank you for posting.
Glad to help Katherine!
I cleaned out the p-trap and then it started just a few drops of a leak right at that p-trap! About to reseat it so hoping that’s the fix!
This explains the trap very well. In the past I was dumb enough to put a gasket on the end where it didn't even need a gasket.
Ah yes, the good old days, LOL!
Fantastic info provided. Love the transparent pipe. Hate the design of a key connection manufactured without a gasket. Oh and, huh, the music is very distracting. Would be much better without the music.
Thanks for the great info!
Thank you, you've given me the confidence to try and fix my leaking pipe myself
Awesome, Joan, thanks for watching!
Excellent video, imho. This video really helped me to understand why the P Trap was leaking at one particular joint, and it also showed me what to do to address the issue. I really do wish that all how to videos were this clear and helpful. Great job!
Very good explanation: Clear and not fumbling for parts. The explanation of fitting the parts was exactly what I need to fix my leak. In my case my metal trap corroded and I tried to just replace that. I must now redo the whole thing which now won't be much of a problem.
Glad to help!
Thank you! I feel I can take on the world now that the leak under my bathroom sink has been fixed.
That is awesome news!
My brand new P trap install, leaked when I tested it (placed a drip pan under the assembly to check). Sure enough, at the union joint. Visually they were square and aligned, with the taper lining up properly. Released the nut, and other compression nuts, and re did starting with the P trap union. Still a Leak. Then I turned to my aircraft fuel line sealant, called Fuel Lube, or also known as EZ-Turn Lubricant. It's a wax based paste that you apply to the joint being sealed. So far, no more leaks.
That's a great idea Paul!
Very helpful thank you. I'm finally grasping why I've had such a difficult time stopping leaks.
Awesome I hope this helps you out
Excellent presentation. One of the best if not THE BEST. Very thorough, conscise and informative. Thank you.
Wow, thank you Pablo!
This was lovely and informative and gave me just what I needed! Thanks for taking the time to explain everything.
Awesome, glad to help out
Thanks for this video. I just installed a p-trap in a bathroom vanity and all the joints came with gaskets. Still had to be careful to get the underwater joint square though.
That's the key to connecting up the P-trap is keeping that joint square.
Took me hours to figure out why my p-trap was leaking until I watched your video! Now my p-trap is finally not leaking. Thank you so much for your help!!
Way to go Nadine
An invaluable video. I was wondering why it was leaking, and there it was. I took my time and made sure the p trap joint was perfect, and presto, it worked.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time out to provide good instructions. It would better help the viewers if you decrease the background music a bit.
Yes a lot of people brought that to our attention this was our most offending video and regards of the background music being way too loud. We do things a lot different now since this video and we even have a much better camera and microphone set up as well
Thank you for this very informative video. This simply explained to me the inner working of the p-trap, and also provided the tools I needed to diagnose and replace it. Have a great day
Awesome, did you solve the problem yet?
Yes I did thank you
Great video and explanation of how a P trap works and how to fix it. Thanks.
Thank you Steve I'm glad you liked it
THANK YOU for this video! I have some proficiency with tools and mechanical problems, but am a novice when it comes to the fine details of plumbing. I had just rebuilt the complete kitchen drain plumbing and when I leak tested it there was ONE leak at the P-Trap fitting. Thanks to your video and explanation I understood how and why this fitting is different. I was then able to re-assemble with priority and attention to the P-Trap with the result of NO LEAKS!
Awesome Robert, glad it worked out
You saved me resorting to an outhouse - thank you!!!
Awesome Gil, I'm glad you learned a lot from our video
Very very well done. I kept putting a washer on the trap arm where it connects to the P trap and could not get the damn thing to seal. Of course I just kept tightening it, which didn’t work! Now it works fine with no leaks! Thanks. Knowledge is power. Thanks for sharing yours. Also, don’t use background music. It was hard to understand you and very very distracting.
We stopped with that background music after this

Glad it was helpful!
Great video... but why don't they just make the connection not on the curve? Couldn't you leave the bottom part as one piece so no leaks?
Great video i was wondering why there was no gasket in the middle part.
That's the design of P-Traps, it's a compression plastic against plastic, and I also never understood why they don't have a gasket there, I think it would eliminate a lot of issues that people have with P-traps.
@@jeffostroff for sure i installed a brand new one and it has a very slow leak. I keep tightening it but don't want to tighten it to much. Guess if it breaks I'll just buy another one. Thanks again for the video.

If you put pipe dope on all the cone surfaces they will not leak, NOT on the threads because they don't seal the connections. It will always be water tight. Nice video.
Yes, I have seen that done on one P-trap and it was working. I still prefer to make the connection work without having to resort to pipe dope, because the experts say it should not be needed, and usually the P-trap makers tell you not to use it. It's really critical alignment that is needed, with not much margin for error, to make sure the trap arm part sits perfectly level into the trap outlet connection, and that you get them on nice and level and tighten good, then go a 1/4 or 1/2 turn beyond hand tighten with the wrench.
It appears a good plumber always check/tests his work. Helpful, useful information.
Great point!
Added Garbage disposal and did not understand why I had a very small leak after adding new P Trap. I get it now!!! Thank you!
Glad to help Jason!
One issue I've had is the gasketless connection's angled piece of plastic getting marred or dented by impact with some sharp edged object making that connection worse. Why is that one particular connection designed without a gasket in the first place? Because of the bend? It's the most confusing thing to me.
I've had a leak at that center connection forever in my bathroom. I got so frustrated with it I encased the entire joint in silicone RTV to stop the leak. Is there seriously not supposed to be a seal there? That makes no sense! Not arguing the video. Just amazed that an underwater joint with no seal is expected to be water-tight.
Yes, I never liked this design either, but you just have to make sure the 2 sections are joined perfectly and tighten that connection before the others.
I know your comment is old, but I had the exact same issue with that joint. It's just a cheap design. I thought of using an RTV as well and your comment convinced me to just seal it that way.
Wow! I didn't know a clear P trap existed. Thanks for the explanation ...
Thanks for viewing our video Tina! Glad you liked it!
You shouldn't look at the sludge, LOL. I think you could get one with a clean out. Good video and explanation.
Wish I'd found this earlier today..very clear thank you!
what did you end up doing to solve your problem?
Well, I haven't yet...it's still leaking (in my defence, video found at 11pm and it's only 8am now) but I will remove the u-pipe (my set up is slightly different in UK) and check the bevelling/gaskets and won't overtighten the locks. Have subscribed for the future!
Great video, very well explained. It makes you wonder if they intentionally did design flaws so that you need to call a plumber! How hard is it to redesign that end to fit straight into the tubing like all the other ones, or maybe I am missing something?😂
sometimes when you change from old school single sink to double sink things get a bit tricky underneath.
Mine just started leaking. I am going to fix it myself now thanks to this video.

Years ago we had metal P-traps, I don't remember the design but they never leaked at the connection, they did corrode and need to be replaced, but I swear if you sneeze in another room these things come loose and leak. There must be something that is solid. I can't keep my kitchen trash can under the sink, the slightest nudge and it leaks. We have MIT and A.I. and this is the best we can do? They work for awhile but always come loose and leak. You video is great but we need a better designed P-trap! I'm 75 and can't do this much longer.
Yes that connection in the middle is the problem in my opinion it should be a gasketed connection I don't know why they made it a friction type connection but it is just very annoying

It's been my experience that when a P-trap leaks the various parts are not lined up properly. When properly aligned, the compression ring will seal the joint with just hand tightening the nut.
Yes, I don't use tools at all on a P-trap
Glad to come across this video, did not know the difference in size between bathroom and kitchen pipe. Both mine are in need of replacement. Glad i watched this first!

You're welcome!
Problem I see a lot is people cram too much stuff under the sink and can knock pipes out of whack . Don't see too many plumbed that way with a tee and separate p-traps? 👍
Yes I replaced a garbage disposal last week at a friends house and they had so much stuff crammed under that kitchen sink that it was putting compression against the P trap and pushing back against the cabinet door and the cabinet door would not close flat.
I had to watch with subtitles because of music

Great video. The transparent P trap was a great help.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You always explain things well. Thanks!
why on earth doesn't somebody improve this almost always leaking system? there has to be a better easier way!
Yup, we need a better system than this. In the 60's and 70s they just cemented it all together, then plumbing codes stated they wanted the P-trap to be serviceable and removable. The rest is history.
If you want a quality installation of drainage pipes and P-traps under your kitchen sink and vanities, that will last 20 or 30 years without failure, DON'T use these plastic piping systems. Install brass or chromium plated brass pipe and fittings with a clean-out port in the bottom of the P-trap. The maximum longevity of these plastic systems is about five years....if your lucky. Labour is expensive, so pay the premium for quality up front so your not repeating the process every five years and ruining your cabinets.
@@chrisgraham2904 thank-you for excellent advice i think long term improves quality and is actually cheaper...just a nudge into
the plastic can produce a leak...and to think how important these pipe pathways are, well failure is a calamity..i like the idea
of brass, which would easily match the value of my home....what i have now is cheap plastic..i will change, can't be that much

We don't have these type of trap in our country, the p trap we have had rubber gasket on every movable joint,
The manufacturer want you to buy a new p tray and employ a plumber to tackle the problem whenever they leak,
Otherwise the manufacturer will be out of business,
They specially design a product that won't last.
Why don't you just put some thread seal tape on that joint,
That will save all these problems in the beginning,
Plumber in out country do that.
Decent info but the music kills your voice
I guess you missed the note in the video description, We uploaded an improved version of this video HERE: ruclips.net/video/tqf11On2xEA/видео.html which is shorter and we removed the overpowering background music so you can hear it better.
Great helpful video thanks.
I had the leak on the 2nd nut.
I was having trouble with the rubber gasket, I wasn't putting it on correctly.
This video showed me where I was going wrong, I put the rubber gasket on as you showed in this video, and it fixed the problem.
An easy mistake to make, but crucial to stopping leaks. No other video I found shows which way around to gasket goes, and how you put it on the downpipe.
So thank you for sorting me out.👍
No problem 👍
Thank you for the troubleshooting options!!! Best video I saw for trying different options. I believe I got it fixed!
what? why are there two different size waste pipes for kitchen and bathroom? FFS
Life would certainly be easier if they were all 1 1/2".
You usually don't stuff food particles in the bathroom sink. Also bigger tubes require larger radius bends, may not have that much room under the bathroom sink.
@@jeffostroff Life is easier using the 1 1/2 trap when you use the thicker type washer to adapt to the 1 1/4 lav drain. Comes standard in the 1 1/2 trap package.
well I started watching this but the music got to me so I left. Trouble is you might have taught me something but I lost interest in your video and.. Oh look a pretty butterfly....
Sorry about that I know we've gotten a number of complaints about that on his video so we have changed the way our production is done nowadays I use all better microphones now a new high end 4K camera and we try not to have the music when I'm talking
We uploaded an improved version of this video tonight HERE: ruclips.net/video/tqf11On2xEA/видео.html which is shorter and we removed the overpowering background music so you can hear it better.
Thanks for this video. Describes how the system works and gives useful suggestions about how to fix leaks.
Glad to help
Excellent presentation! Well organized and presented. Very relevant. Thanks!
The music is completely unnecessary
I like how he refers to the connections as "guys" and they have male pronouns too lol
Yeah we need to find some shes in there
That’s for the info! You made me look like a skilled plumber to my wife… she said there was no way I could fix it
Thanks for the video , removed my p trap and reinstalled it with the bowl shaped pieces level, no more leaks!
Nice work!
