- A Christmas treat for the whole family and a classic with a special place in the hearts of ballet fans around the world. The Royal Ballet's Soloist Anna Rose O'Sullivan (Clara) and First Soloist Marcelino Sambé (Hans Peter / The Nutcracker) perform in the Act I pas de deux. Find out more here www.roh.org.uk...
Peter Wright's interpretation of The Nutcracker has been enchanting children and adults alike since its first performance by The Royal Ballet in 1984. Lev Ivanov's 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky's sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production. Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet begins in the 19th-century German home of the Stahlbaums, where they are hosting a lively Christmas party. The period setting is captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman's designs, which include authentic Christmas tree decorations that are magically brought to life. Wright's choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet's original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

Marcelino is such a star, so charismatic! Can't wait to see him as a Principal.
You didnt need to wait long :D
Gorgeous 🥰
Wasn't this her debut? Lol 🤣
Dare I say it, this is my favorite pdd in The Nutcracker even above the Sugarplum pdd. The relationship and the trust set between Clara and Hans-Peter is so beautiful and organic, the music is passionate, and the couple here convey the emotions so wonderfully. Bravo to Anna Rose and Marcelino!
Same, I have a hard time choosing between them!
Absolutely. The music is just perfect and the choreography couldn't be more incredible and emotional. The moment at 2:01 gives me goosebumps every single time.
absolutely!!
I completely agree 😊❤ It’s extremely romantic 😍
In awe of the glutes on this lad
Enough to give one an attack of the vapors. Quadriceps not far behind.
This comment won omg JJAAJJA
That’s the first thing I noticed lol. Damn that boy is BUILT
They're quite... Attention grabbing
Ballet dancers have the best butts 😂
Anna Rose's Clara has become one of my all-time favorites, she's so joyful and gorgeous.
Congratulations to both Marcelino and Anna-Rose on their promotions this season! Both really well deserved 😊
And now principals😊
Marcelino sambe is the best ever nutcracker cast of all times....
Anna Rose is lovely, but in this pas de deux Marcelino outshines her.
Don't forget the amazing Ivan Putrov
@Tinita Bondi change the record will you. Just stop watching Sambe - you obviously don't like him. So why watch him??!
UM DID NO ONE SEE THAT AMAZING CATCH BY MARCELINO AT 2:55 I LEGIT GASPED
*THICKK*
dulce robles OMG HAHAAHAHA
WAT :P
ROGER
My first thought when I saw him 👁👄👁
Wow, to say these two dance so exquisitely together would be an understatement. I do wish The Royal Ballet would stream previous years. I would pay to see the full Nutcracker from the year this was filmed as the 2020 Nutcracker was cancelled and rightfully so due to safety. Sigh...
If I could dance at any company in the world it would be at the Royal Opera House. They show the world so much technique, but grace, as well as amazing costumes and sets. I have become spoiled watching their ballet rehearsals and their ballets on RUclips. I hope one day I can go see their Nutcracker live!!
That nightgown is gorgeous!
Grande Marcelino!!! Portugal sendo muito bem representado!!!
I'm watching all the pas de deux videos i can find because they're SO beautiful and lamenting the fact that i will never be good enough to pursue a career as a professional dancer. It's very unrealistic and is never going to happen and I'm content with that, but just once I wish I could be in a ballet. Make the magic that I feel. Be in a pas de deux.
Just love them both here, Marcelino is divine in this role.
I cry watching Samba, he dances so beautifully, one day I will see this Nutcracker
*Sambé
he is now a firm favourite at covent garden and receives great applause everytime. ive seen him progress and its great to see him doing so well. She is also lovely and is british which is great. A beautiful pairing.
Portuguese ballet dancer 🇵🇹 ❤️ talented and beautiful!
Guine bissau dessa parte nao se lembram .. racistas
He is absolutely divine! What a great pair of dancers!
So wish I could be at the ROH this Christmas to see them dance together as The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince..... so well deserved to see them promoted to the lead roles!! Bravo!!! Love them both so much xx
Another Nutcracker pas de deux video that I had been waiting for from the ROH! Boxing Day 2018 just got better! WOHOOO!

I love this love story ❤❤
I went to see the recorded perfomance in my local cinema just one day before Christmas Eve! Wonderful cast and choreography. Thank you for this great ballet! :)
Honestly one of my favorite dances and tracks ever, so beautiful

Completely beautiful - both dancers so gifted. Thank you, Royal Ballet!
This's the best of nutcracker ballet part scene performance I never seen !❤ ❤
This Is so Pure Magic. I'm Crying 💙
I can't wait until tonight to see the live cinema performance at The Highland Cinema in Fort William. O'Sullivan and També are a partnership of immense power and dynamism, combined with aritistic beauty and lyricism. I'm so excited!
Love him!
2:29 the way shes moves with her dress is phenomenal
Totally agree 😊❤
In my opinion, Anna and Marcelino were born to be Clara and Nutcracker! Perfect! ❤️
Another beautiful pair! Stunning 💕
W tears in my eyes 😭😢💜💔
Why did this get cut off when the most beautiful part of the music was to begin? Is there a better version of this that includes the ending of this pas de deux? This is gorgeously danced so this is very frustrating to have it chopped off like this.
Gorgeous!
Brilliant performance, thank you for posting👍
Lindo amei da até vontade de chorar
The pine forest scene rules even though I have this piece from The Nutcracker in my "Winter party" playlist that I made on Spotify. These 2️⃣ dancers were terrific together. 👍🏻 if you agree and like ballet at the same time.
Breathtaking!
Well done Marcelino. Such an inspiration!!
That was beautiful, fabulous dancing from them both.
Beautiful ❤️😍
I love the music to this pas de deux.
Que lindo!🥹❤️
So beautiful!!! Desejei tanto vê-los dançando esse ato juntos. 😍
Such a stunning performance! Will there be released a DVD with this cast? (:

@@juliehayne4636 since when are Clara/masha and the sugar plum fairy 2 different people? Maybe I watched the mariinsky version too much...
I love Anna Rose O Sullivan and also loved Alina Cojucaru in this role.
That is a big one...
Que música 😍😍
Thanks for cutting off the end, the best part.
I quite agree. We are anticipating every bit and then someone lets us down . Still wonderful though. Tchaikovsky gets to every part of our senses and the dancers leave the visual memory.

Whats is the name of music?
What’s the fabric of Clara’s dress omg it’s the most gorgeous flowing dress I’ve ever seen
oh to be Clara
Where I can Find the complet Ballet?
Lovely. Though I do miss some of the old lifts from earlier versions. Just a couple of lifts that got a bit simplified since 2000, especially the last one.
In old times they used to be extremely careful on the selection of male dancers, according to roles. Now all that matters is technique and strength.
Wonderful dancers, wonderful music, wonderful movements, but movements dont fully match what the music is saying...so the choreo has good potential but needs editing or the vision of a new choreographer
0:09 Stargate SG1 is that you?
stun
Who else is here from the Mindful Activities book?
This is not the Pas de deux.
Most say Pas de deux I say LE LIFT
2:56 ithink they made a teensy weensy mistake but stiil good
im just going to say it..... the guy is caked up lol
Well if nobody will say this I will, he has a nice buuuuuutt that steals show like if u saw the nutcracker before if u have school I should see no comments 🚫🚫🚫🤐🤐🤐
Ohhh he thicc thicccc
My only issue is that Clara shouldn't be en point. The whole point of the nutcracker is that it's about a young girl fantasizing about being a woman, but she's not there yet. Point shoes are a coming of age event for female dancers, and Clara isn't of age. Her being in a slipper is supposed to highlight her youth. She also shouldn't be doing any complicated dancing. The point of Clara is that she symbolizes girlhood, not necessarily that she's the star dancer. Putting an older more experienced dancer en point in place of a younger inexperienced dancer on flat is adding technical complexity at the expense of story.
This isn't the only version of The Nutcracker that has Clara dancing en pointe. The best girls are en pointe by age 12 and Clara is a teenager experiencing her first love, neither a child, nor an adult. There are plenty of versions that use a 13-16 yr old for Clara, dancing en pointe, though doing less than this. If we're trying to portray someone fantasising it's usual also to display those fantasies e.g. the vision scene in The Sleeping Beauty. Considering all of these factors Clara dancing en pointe doesn't take away anything from the story, though maybe it being an adult dancer rather than an older girl from White Lodge does - however in the show I saw live Clara being a teenager was entirely believable based on the looks of that dancer. The twist I'm not sure I like is Clara and Hans Peter dancing in the variations in act II, but reflecting on your comments about her fantasizing about being woman it actually fits better and the section where The Rose Fairy demonstrates and encourages her to follow becomes rather touching.
I agree with this concept, although not for the ROH version. An excerpt from the description box above: "in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love."
I'd be weirded out to see a very young looking girl falling in love with an adult (unless the Nutcracker was also played by a young boy). I think Clara is about 15/16 here, so it's fitting for her to be en pointe doing difficult steps, just like Aurora, for exemple.
ahcaroles agreed juxtapose that to the sugar fairy and the cavalier which more of a mature love
Royal Ballet has used Clara's on pointe for years, as has many other companies. It depends on the adaptation that the ballet is telling. In the party scene, it makes a lot of sense, she's the only one in the Children's March on pointe, which sets her apart from the children and she isn't a character dancer which sets her apart from the adults. She's in that awkward stage where she still has a lot of childlike imagination but she's old enough to be thinking about love and romance. It represents the Nutcracker as a whole, a melding of imagination and wonder with real life problems (loss of a family member, not wanting to grow up etc).
Do male ballerinas ever pop a stiffy, and like how would they deal with that its hard enough in sweats.
These are the kinds of thoughts that kept me out of the really good schools.
Probably too technically minded while performing to have those kind of thoughts.
After though you know he's touching it.
These are the kind of thoughts I have.
tes is scery
Never thought there’d come a day when I’d be so turned on by a man’s glutes. Marcelino is definitely my favorite male dancer for that very reason!
The dancers are stunning but the choreography just doesn't do the music justice. It doesn't match at all. It is very flat.
Shes's a good ballerina but...
ㅗㅌ
Ballerinas turn me on especially when they are in pancake tutus
Just be honest, Ballet is not for Asian or African. Just does not look pretty.
Wdym? Sambe is brilliant!
Kimin Kim makes you a liar. There are scads more. Slither back under your rock, racist.
Ok racist. Lol
Uuu Racist! Who are you?
