  • My dream to visit the West Somerset Railway was finally accomplished in August of 2017. Between 28 August and 1st of September, accompanied by Ted Baker, we travelled up and down the railway, stopping at various points over the period. This video is a record of that wonderful visit.
The original line between Taunton and Watched was opened in 1862 and later extended to Minehead in 1874. The line was closed by British Railways in 1971 and reopened as a heritage line in 1976. Today it is the longest standard gauge independent railway in the UK and passenger services operate over 20 and a half miles of its 22 and three quarter mile total length.
The area around Taunton is special to me as it was once the seat of my ancestors.
Originally built as a broad gauge (7ft 1/4" In) line by the original West Somerset Railway, the railway was converted to standard gauge (4ft 8 1/2In) in 1882.
Stations include Bishops Lydeard, Crowcombe Heathfield, Stogumber, Wiliton, Doniford halt, Watchet, Washford, Blue Anchor, Dunster and Minehead.
The West Somerset Railway is mainly run by volunteers. There are around 500 volunteers that keep the railway running and although the railway does has a body of permanent staff, the role of volunteers is vital its existence. It is truly heartwarming to see what has been achieved through determination and passion.
The railway is well worth a visit and by doing so it is supported for future generations to enjoy.
Thanks to all staff and volunteers at the West Somerset Railway and I hope to be back some time very soon.
