  • Flite Test - Hand Launching - FLITE TIP
    Have you ever thrown your plane straight into the ground, or wished you had an extra hand on your transmitter when launching? Well in this episode, Josh and Josh talk a little about the different ways to hand launch planes that don't have landing gear. David Windestal also demonstrates how to hand launch a wing! Tune in to learn how to properly hand launch YOUR plane!

    tossing a plane slighty up is a bad thing to do, with an easystar or bixler they don't give a crap. But if you for instance want to toss a EDF jet, warbird, glider,.. always toss straight ahead and sometimes even with a little angle downwards. The low speed combined with the nose up can cause stall, as can be seen 3:45 the plane drops its nose because the speed is too low.

    • @privateagent

      no, the plane drops the nose because the angle of thrust is pointing downwards on this type of planes.

      Agreed. Also, if you catch a sudden strong gust, you are likely to stall it.

    @ladybirdskaterboy High enough that you can correct the plane if you make a mistake.

    In the intro of this video, at 0:21, David is shown doing a different type of launch of the wing than the one demonstrated later. That is the type of launch I prefer with my wings. It's like a Frisbee throw, except without snapping your wrist. Or like a tennis backhand. I find that to be a more natural arm motion to get a swift, sure launch than that awkward "push" type of sidearm throw shown later in the video.

  • @GooberSB
    @GooberSB 13 лет назад +3

    Almost bit the dust like you said, Josh. A successful launch is a good launch but don't be afraid to throw it harder. Harder than necessary is better than too gentle.

    I always tell people who launch my planes for the first time to toss it in the same motion as they would throw a Dart, it works every time :-)

  • @yeahitworks

    This is good! Everyone flying a glider should know how to hand launch properly.
    I hope you are doing this to teach RcFoamFighters, they launch the Phoenix Glider like the crappiest way you could imagine.

    I much prefer a hard level toss. Much less likely to stall it, especially if you catch a gust of wind.

    Not having Josh in newer flight test video's is a +,
    He's always trying to be awkward and cringy. And no matter how many years passed he pretended to be a noob. I for one don't miss him.

    Neckstrap is a good idea, I just started wearing one a few weeks ago, found it more useful after flying and for dumb moments, lol but i can see where it will help in future!

  • @yeahitworks

    By the way, Josh, you need to launch it a little harder, to get a momentum, it almost nose dive there. Throw it like a spear. :)

    Back when planes had brushed motors you had to launch them downwards to gain airspeed

  • @mancobooster
    @mancobooster 13 лет назад +1

    meh with my easystar, of which the bixler is kind of a clone of, i just lay it down and push it full throttle so it's actually sliding around on its belly, when it gets up to speed it actually lifts off so you don't really need a landing gear with the bixler, just some tape on the bottom so you don't scuff it up to badly

  • @alloutrotate
    @alloutrotate 13 лет назад +1

    You got it wrong again guys. When launching by hand, aim the aircraft at a spot approximately 30 yards away on the ground, and try to throw the aircraft onto that spot. It will ensure that you build up speed before you start climbing, and you won't get that initiall drop on the launch, as shown in the video. It also ensures that the plane doesn't stall after launch if the motor suddenly cuts out. In other words: NEVER AIM the NOSE of the AIRCRAFT ABOVE HORISONTAL!

    Or if you fly aerobatic planes you just drop them at half throttle, set the throttle put the plane in your left hand right hand on the controls and drop and away you go :)

I should have said 'The way the hat is being worn looks more ignorant every time I see it'. :-) I can still watch the videos. The 'Repairing covering film' video was quite useful. Thumbs up on that one. I haven't viewed them all, but many of the 'how to' and technical videos look interesting as well.

    With my upgraded 3800kv 2627 turnigy motor... my 3rd attempt at launching a epo parkjet properly.. (after breaking two planes) its something that everyone I know has a hard time trying to do... Its a blast when its up in the air, but just that initial throw... its a scary thing to do. I have no idea why mine is so hard...

    Throwing nose high at 2/3- 3/4 throttle is a bad idea. It assumes that all planes have enough power to climb immediately at a higher AOA, which isnt always the case. A horizontal launch is best.

    • @robertvanhousen1015
      @robertvanhousen1015 4 года назад

      If you screw up, you'll have just enough height to correct before a crash. That's why most flyers recommend 2 or 3 mistakes high.

  • @TomReed95
    @TomReed95 12 лет назад +1

    I disagree with your launching advice, for some of my planes (especially fiberglass pylon racers with brick-like wing loading's) you need full throttle and a very hard throw to get them airborne. You should advise people to start with a hard throw @ WOT then reduce their throttle for consecutive throws until they find a sweet spot. Telling viewers just to give about 1/2 - 2/3 throttle and throw it gently up is asking for someone to stall their plane and crash it. Just my opinion.

    • @robertvanhousen1015
      @robertvanhousen1015 4 года назад

      Most beginners would be in poor shape with that type of plane, or a scale WWII or jet. Their advice is mostly consistent with beginner planes. I do prefer a harder toss and almost dead level. That way if you catch a sudden strong gust you wont' stall. We get a lot of that gusty stuff in Texas.

It keeps the sun and the rain out of the eyes and can be used to mount a small video camera to document your flights. Bill straight back works for baseball catchers who also wear a mask. Bill off to the side, as worn in this video, just looks ignorant.
