    I like the blue mask just because it's easier to tell him apart from Jason and Tim and Damian. I think a lot of artists don't bother drawing each of their faces or hairstyles distinctly enough even when those characters are standing right next to each other.

      Nah gotta hop off the kool aid.that was one of the most passive aggressive Winey reviews I ever seen. All of his “cons” were pointless except maybe the drop down legs. The QC problems vary from figure to figure. Which I get shouldn’t be that common with this price point. But I noticed none of his QC complaints on my copy. Then constantly mentioning how basic the figure is and lack of essentially fluff. Is so dumb it’s it’s Annoying. I been seeing ALOT of people wanting a Mafex DD. I’d love to see how much he whines about how “basic” that would be. That one is essentially this but painted with only 2 or 3 shades of red lol

    One of the better butterfly joints I've ever seen was on SHF infinity war hulk, it had the arms connected on a ballpeg onto a cap that has its own ballpeg connected to the inside of the torso, bit the ball was place closer to the chest so it shifted more to the front but also had relatively good range backwards

    Solid review on a solid figure. Nightwing is my favorite DC character, so I'm glad to finally have a good well articulated figure of him! Only thing I wish this figure came with was a smiling face but hopefully that's included if they ever release another version of him.

  • @TenScaryMonkeys

    For range, aesthetics, and simplicity of design, the old Toy Biz McFarlane Spiderman somehow still to this day has among the best-implemented butterfly joints. I don’t get why more lines don’t reverse-engineer that design.

    I think the complexity of the figures design should reflect the price. It doesn't make sense to me that this figure is the same price as Gambit, who comes with noticeably more paint, colors, accessories, and soft. Surely the production costs would be higher there, but maybe that's how companies balance out the prices. By making "cheaper" figures like Night wing alongside side more costly figures like Gambit, and then keep a flat rate across the board.
    It's not as offensive with Mafex because the value is still there regardless, but either way, some figures inevitably feel more worth the value than others.

    • @yitterskitter5223
      @yitterskitter5223 Год назад +3

      If I’m not mistaken most of the price of production is the mold. Soft goods and whatnot don’t cost much compared the the body itself. Accessories do add some cost, but overall the fact that’s it’s a new body mold with new proportions means the cost of production is going to be pretty damn close to Gambit.

  • @dankmemer2774
    @dankmemer2774 Год назад +1

    You can also make the butterfly joint come entirely out of the torso and swing forward so you don’t have to cut up the chest sculpt. But you run the risk of making the joint look dislocated when in use.

    For the question of the day, after you've shown your prototypes and after seeing the sculpt for the Mcfarlane Killer Croc, I am leaning more into retaining the sculpt by avoiding the butterfly joints.
    One complaint I have that maybe is just on my copy are the holding hands pop out of the wrist quite easily when holding the sticks with the bendy wire (when they are fully extended).
    I know this blows the Mcfarlane version out of the water, but that price is too much

    Yeah, I think cutting up the sculp is worth it for more butterfly range. The latest marvel legends bodies for example should have a cut like their wolverine and reto spidey molds (the ryv spidey has less range. I think its because it has a larger shoulder with the same cut, I could be wrong on this reason though.) When it comes to price differences on simpler designed characters, I think the price should be the same, but simpler characters should come with more accessories to jazz up the offering.

  • @rsaaland

    Thanks for pulling the trigger and reviewing this. Been wanting to replace my DCUC Nightwing for a decade now. Looks tons better than I expected but not enough to justify the price. The black could benefit from volumetric highlights but I can live without that considering the varnish. The blue though could definitely use more shading to define the muscles and edges. Even just a little bit would've been nice because right now the blue lines are so plain that they look unfinished; they waste the sculpt.
    Nightwing's a favorite of mine though and this is my preferred look, so this review has convinced me to put him on a wishlist.

    Thanks for mentioning the paint. Bought this as my first Mafex and, if I didn't know beforehand from this review that Mafex paint apps weren't excellent, I'd be pissed because mine is riddled with issues, and the paint they managed correctly still isn't particularly impressive for the price. Mostly wonderful articulation, but as far as my Nightwing goes, it doesn't really scream "premium" more than lower-end figures like the DCSH Mongul or Jada's Fei Long. One of my non-collector friends even said it looked worse than McFarlane's Martian Manhunter.
    The warning from this review is helping a *lot* to buffer buyer's regret.

  • @mkl4466
    @mkl4466 Год назад +1

    In one of your pose photos, the blue paint looks like a smirking smiley face, because of the way the shoulder cuts up the design.
    So for your QOTD: I prioritize visual design over articulation. I don't mind cuts to the body as long as those cuts don't break up the flow of the paint/costume design.
    It's definitely a challenge when there are straight lines running along limbs across joints. If each figure is being individually engineered and molded, a perfect scenario would be to give as much articulation as possible within the parameters of that particular design. So in this case, because the blue paint goes across the butterfly joint, I'd have liked to see less chest cutaway. Arm movement would have been sufficient from the shoulder ball, not requiring the cutaway on the pecs, to keep the visual design whole. That's especially important with Nightwing since the blue across the chest is the visual focal point, with nothing else going on with the costume to draw the eye.
    A great example is the waist cut on ML 2099, the red paint extends past the waist. That's where a ball joint should have been used that put the cut below the red emblem.
    Character designers aren't thinking of action figures when they create cool characters, so it's just not always possible to sneak in joints that fit the costume and don't visually break something when we use the joints.

  • @ruverbryh9998
    @ruverbryh9998 Год назад +2

    To answer your question I think it depends on the character, I personally love nightwing and would pay a good price to get a definitive version of that character. But if it’s someone like the riddler or commissioner Gordon, I’d get the budget version or just wait for a budget version.

    In slight defense of the drop-down hips, I like it due to the height adaptability. Mafex Magneto, for instance is slightly shorter than my ML X-men I display him with, but the drop down hips compensate nicely without screwing up the aesthetics imo. So, yeah… I’m team drop-downs lol.

    I have a ton of Mafex, but absolutely agree they generally feel overpriced, especially compared to S.H. Figuarts. They are masters of character selection though; basing their lineups on specific storylines like Hush and Death of Superman is actually pretty brilliant, IMO, and while they don't quite feel like they are a great deal, they are good enough they feel "worth it."
    One fig I will give them huge props for though is the recent battle damaged Robocop. That thing is gorgeous (I mean, for being an ugly disfigured cyborg). The paint and sculpt are possibly the best of any 1/12 figure I own, and even the joint tolerances are on point. Hopefully it is a sign that they are finally hitting their full potential.

    I think it was one of the DBZ model kits, but the engineering on their butterfly was basically a hinge nearly flush with the chest, so the shoulder assembly swings out to nearly bringing the shoulder in line with the chest rather than perpendicular. I think figures (that aren't part of a line-wide specific price point like Marvel Legends) will pretty much always be priced on how popular the character is rather than how complex it is. The remark about Mafex tightening their stands more.. they come loose over time when you articulate the stand just by the way of nut and bolt physics, but they are screws dude.. you can adjust the tightness as needed. That’s the most frustrating critique I may have ever heard in a figure review but not everybody is a mechanic for a living like I am. I feel the price of a figure should be reflected into the final product. I only own one KO MAFEX (it's a MAF) and whilst a cool figure (It's Venom) I think i would have been a little disappointed if buying a legit one for the regular price. Just a little though.
    I think Mezco One:12 is a bit justified in price, but again... that 1989 Batman seems like a nightmare to handle. I am fine with my NECA version, but I've owned others and the quality is there.
    I guess it all comes down to preference at the end of the day, but if I am paying $100+ for a 1/12 scale figure... I expect it to be a definitive portrayal of aby give character. From what I have seen in your reviews, some are... some aren't. Wolverine... could be better. The most recent Spider-Man... possibly a perfect figure.

    I think it’s weird the only figs I’ve seen make the drop down hips work is WWE. They make is possible for figures like Brock Lesnar to touch their toes, not just small guys like Aj styles. Out of all the toy companies that use drop down hips I wasn’t expecting Mattel and wwe to be the ones to make it work.

    In my opinion, a simple designed figure like this still warrants the normal price point because it’s still all new sculpt and mold. It does help that it’s actually well made too.

    Great Dickless review Anthony. With its sleek characteristics, Mafex could do no wrong in a perfect buck. I am looking for the penultimate variants of the characters I collect, and aside from Thor I have to say Mafex is certainly impressive. Although the Knightfall Batman is not from Hush, it does look like it would go rather nicely with Nightwing.

    The only way to fix butterfly joints is to do what Figma does for some of their gun wilding characters who happen to have large breasticles, they have one chest piece with full sized boobs and one chest piece with the boobs sculpted squeezed together so both hands can hold a single handle. Our male characters need squeezed breast plates too!
