  • A unique interview with Richard Nixon from January of 1966. These were the years that Nixon was rebuilding his political power after losing his presidential bid in 1960 to JFK. Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986. Footage from the Merv Griffin Show is available for licensing to all forms of media through Reelin' In The Years Productions. www.reelinintheyears.com.

Interesting interview. Between 1963 and 1968 there aren't many Nixon interviews. By 1966 he already knew he'd run in 1968.

What we learn from this pre-presidential interview, is that Nixon did not merely inherit the war in Vietnam from Johnson, but he very much believed in it --- i.e. that it was correct policy to be there fighting it. There is also a Larry King interview from the 1980s, where Nixon still claimed that being in Vietnam was the right policy course at the time. He clearly had a huge blind spot in his otherwise clear foreign policy vision.

It was the right thing to do. On the surface, defend a democratic nation from a communist nation. The problem? Many internal conflicts in American & Vietnamese government that led to a disaster. Kennedy assassinating Ngo Diem. America not supporting Ho Chi Mihn when he was pro America. LBJ not committing to a winnable war. Congress deciding to pull back & restrict military activity that wouldve won the war. South Vietnamese post Ngo Diem not caring about their nation or being capable of defending it. Lots of issues.
