When Mr Stapleton sings he always delivers such emotions that can't be explained to me. As you noticed too he was obviously so nervous for having to speak in front of his idol and many people and he seems like a shy person. But the first second he opened his mouth it was pure magic. And it comes so naturally to him. I came across this song through this performance and then listened the original but I think Chris Stapleton made the song even more special by his voice and sensitivity. I highly recommend “Go Rest High On That Mountain” or “When I Call Your Name” to begin with. By the way, the answer to who smiled at Vince to inspire that song: his wife, Amy Grant.
Chris did an amazing job on the song and it really is one of the most personal songs for Vince because Vince wrote it for Amy Grant who would become his wife before she was his wife and without anyone else knowing it was about Amy. I still prefer Vince's version because Vince is the OG but Chris did an awesome cover.

Personally, for me, in MY opinion.....Chris' version is better than Vince's. Just his voice. Sounds better, fits better.
