CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Leonidas (Gerard Butler) gives his men a stirring speech before the enemy charge.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sin City author Frank Miller's sweeping take on the historic Battle of Thermopylae comes to the screen courtesy of Dawn of the Dead director Zack Snyder. Gerard Butler stars as Spartan King Leonidas and Lena Headey plays Queen Gorgo. The massive army of the Persian Empire is sweeping across the globe, crushing every force that dares stand in its path. When a Persian envoy arrives in Sparta offering King Leonidas power over all of Greece if he will only bow to the will of the all powerful Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the strong-willed leader assembles a small army comprised of his empire's best fighters and marches off to battle. Though they have virtually no hope of defeating Xerxes' intimidating battalion, Leonidas' men soldier on, intent on letting it be known they will bow to no man but their king. Meanwhile, back in Sparta, the loyal Queen Gorgo attempts to convince both the skeptical council and the devious Theron (Dominic West) to send more troops despite the fact that many view Leonidas' unsanctioned war march as a serious transgression. As Xerxes' fearsome "immortals" draw near, a few noble Greeks vow to assist the Spartans on the battlefield. When King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors fell to the overwhelming Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae, the fearless actions of the noble fighters inspired all of Greece to stand up against their Persian enemy and wage the battle that would ultimately give birth to the modern concept of democracy.

"Remember this day men, for it will be yours for all time."
It really is.
Comic
Yeah their famous even thousands of years later
Yes it is they literally made an amazing movie about it that people still watch in the 21st century
Xerxes said how he would burn down every Greek library and have all Greek historians have their tongues cut out to ensure that the 300 Spartans would be forgotten to the sands of time.
All that happened was the Spartans were immortalised as the greatest warriors to ever exist.
Men fight to be heroes. Heroes fight to be Greeks. Greeks fight to be Spartans.

The greatest thing about "come and get them" is that Leonidas really said that

This was me every Saturday between 11am and 5pm when I worked at McDs - and that was in a relatively small City in the UK (
I know Spartan society was brutal but I admired that the king fought along side his men and lead them, not just directed and sent troops while he stayed comfortably at his city
Brutal yet fair my friend. Equal rights between women and men, equal quantity of land for each family, kings and soldiers stand as same or to you the Greek word as omoioi ( όμοιοι ). Of course wasn’t perfect ( nothing is ) but was the greatest political system
And then has the nerve to leave them behind enemy lines.
@@TylerDurden-cy5cs -----> "Brutal yet fair my friend. Equal rights between women and men, "
Uh? No! That's the biggest bullshit story being circulated around. Name me one Spartan scholar or politician who was a woman during that time? You can't! Because women were not allowed to hold positions of government and were not trusted to be scholars in Sparta. They could not take part in meetings of the Apella or hold any form of public office. Spartan women could fight but were not allowed to become soldiers. Spartan women were still subject to the authority of their husbands. PRETTY FAR FROM THE CONCEPT OF EQUALITY SO FAR! Also, Spartans practice a cruel and primitive form of Eugenics. So those babies only deemed physically perfect were allowed to survive. I'm going to skip the trials of childhood. Even after that, if you didn't perform your duties as a Spartian citizen, you lost all your rights and your lands, and you risked death, banishment or slavery So if you cherry pick and move the goal posts enough on the concept of "equality" down to land ownership and common citizenship status, then yes, Women had equality within that narrow frame work, so long as she did her duties (and those duties were mainly to obey her husband, make babies, and educate their young. That was her entire role as Sparta had lots of slaves to do everything else. Sparta women were well educated in culture and arts. However, I believe there is only one known spartan women poet. So for a highly educated class of women, why do we not have more?). Yea she was greeted with respect when walking down a street. But that was it. Sparta was a members only club and most who lived there weren't part of the club. They were slaves and they were treated badly. Even used as target practice. The Athenians were more fair to their slaves and would even work along side them.
Want to know something even more badass? Leonidas was sixty years old when he led the 300.
@@Falconlibrary Good point. I didn't think Historians were ever sure about that?
When the captain yells: earn these shields boys! That was serious motivation.

I learnt the other day Leonidas was 50 years old when this happened!!! Even more of a beast!!

Joshua Shepley A Spartan warrior served until he was 60 years of age, the older he was the further back in the shield wall he was. Thats bloody old even by todays standards to be 'mixing it' though....if I had a hat on I'd take it off to them!
makes me wonder if the real leonidas is still strong at the age of 60... unless 60 year old men of leonidas' time are still as strong as modern day men in their 20s.. imagine a 60 year old leonidas who is as buff and muscular as arnold schwarzenegger in his prime(IE in his 20s-30s)
He was 60 years old
Lol you do realize that this is just hoolywood bullshit. They werent jacked like in the movie
I love Leonidas's face when he says "Come and get them!"
He's like "Wow, that sounded really cool. Oh my God... And that throw, tho'?"
Sam H. Lol but he sounds determined to kill them all with his army
" Come and get them " is simplified translation of "Molon Lave " (Μολων Λαβέ) . The real meaning of the phrase could be something like "If you dare to come , try and get them " or "You will get them but you will bleed trying " in free translation .
@@fz0r authentic (literal) translation is 'having come forward, take [them]' - the implication being both that he's daring the Persians to attack in the first place, and then also to see if they're strong enough to take the Spartans' weapons from them. So 'come and get them' is actually the best translation you can probably get because it's very idiomatic english and perfectly gets across the meaning of the phrase
@@mackindle12345 as i said in my comment , it was a free translation. The word Molon comes from ancient word Molisko and modern Greek word Molis , with means "barely" . Lave means "take them" .
What he really mean , in the laconic way of speaking is what i wrote ... In free translation again . "Molon Lave" is a very powerful phrase , not just "come and get them".
@@fz0r I think you might wanna check that... pretty sure molon is the aorist participle of Blosko meaning 'I come/go' (as a Classics MA student I'd hope I'm correct haha - would be embarrassing for me if I wasn't lol)
"Persians, come and get them!" Is something the real Leonidas actually said to the Persians! That makes this all the more badass
Actually it was molon labe which translates to Come. Take. And and them are implied and are put in for better understanding

Even though the movie is an exaggeration to what actually happened, in a world where masculinity is being attacked, this movie is pretty inspirational for men to stand up and be MEN. Don’t back down. Fight. Do the right thing. Be jacked. Be in shape. Lead with honor. Think about the legacy you leave behind for future generations
Based af. Hard times make strong men. Strong men make easy times. Easy times make weak men. Weak men make hard times.
It's based on a graphic novel, so of course it's an exaggeration.
Yeah, train your sons from birth to fight, show them no love, give them no comfort. Make their hearts hard and forge them into machines of war and at the end sit back and rest knowing you've saved them from weakness by sacrificing their humanity.
