The scene when Maximus says put me in front of my men and see where their loyalty lies is so awesome you so it in this scene and they arent even his actual soilders yet in heartbeat they surround him when threatened. Would have love to see him actually get to his troops
@srb2591 the most heartbreaking moment of the whole movie is just after Maximus meets his servant Cicero at night and you think is his army there? Then Cicero is shot full of arrows and that hope is dashed instantly. Bummer.

The deep subtle irony casual poked at is under Commodius, things are exactly opposite of how they're suppose to be. Scipio's legions were dishonored, exiled veterans while Hannibal's forces were seen through an Exotic African lens. Considering the gladiators legionary gear on, flip flopping the names of the two opposing forces would have made this whole battle scene make sense.

Yeah but that was a great time for movies. First Saving Private Ryan in 98, Matrix in 99 and Gladiator in 2000. All with masterful opening scenes.
