The "Andy Griffith Show" proved you could have a hit show without sex, foul language and/or violence and portrayed characters that really cared about each other and helped each other out in times of need. It is a true classic.
He was funny on the show sometimes however, I don't think there was ever a more annoyingly stupid character in a T. V. show. Actually there were a lot of stupid people in Mayberry.

Barney's heart was in the right place , his mind wasn't always up to speed. Most comedies in the 70's and 80's shared the same ideas...Matching up intellectual characters with simple minded characters...ie, Green Acres, All in the Family, Gilligan's Island,. Petticoat Junction, the list goes on...Bumbling, Zany, Bizarre, peculiar, accentric etc..It's what made people laugh because of similar situations or people in their lives...These shows drew huge ratings, as well as have continued..Seinfeld , Friends , even Big Bang Theory..( Sheldon was a genius but a complete failure at relationships) ...But intelligence wise on the Andy Griffith Show, Barney was very intelligent next to Ernest T. I interview for a living and there's nothing better than making your subject feel comfortable enough to tell great stories. Active listening and questions that show you've been listening. I also hate it when someone stares at their clipboard while asking a question.
That may be because the interviewer was severely criticized on a RUclips thread by viewers for not knowing much about the Andy Griffith Show. He asked basic questions to the former cast members that any true-blooded, TV watching American would already know the answers to. He showed absolutely no enthusiasm. RUclipsRS quickly recognized his lack of knowledge regarding the show. But the actors like Don Knotts, George Lindsey (Goober), Hal Smith (Otis), Maggie Petersen were very gracious in attempting to compensate for his sub par interviewing skills. @2:29...his impassive expression spells it all.
@@heygetoffmylawn1572 lt's nice to allow the interviewee free reign on the conversation, but on the other hand the celebrity may not know the questions that the listeners want answered. A know-it-all interviewer at least knows what questions to ask. The problem is he/she may not shut up long enough to hear the answers. And sometimes they want to publickly showcase their knowledge of behind-the-scenes capers. I listened to a RUclips interview once where a man sat down with Linda Kaye Henning from PETTICOAT JUNCTION. He, the interviewer, talked so much that if l didn't know any better l would've thought that Linda was interviewing him. He not only knew all the questions, he had all the answers. At the end Linda had to speak up in order to overshadow his constant cackle.
Spent my mother's last birthday laying in bed with her watching The Andy Griffith Show. She was terminally ill and wanted to watch something pleasant and positive, so we watched the show all day. I'll never forget it and am eternally grateful to that cast and crew for giving her that "pleasant" final birthday. I miss her so much but cherish the show because it was "there" for her when she needed that escape from her suffering on her last special day. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that Andy Griffith was just a very gracious kind of man and was able to allow Frances to be who she was w/out letting it affect him negatively. sk in usa (NC)
I saw ( I think it was Peter Jennings) him in an interview talking about how television has changed so much. He said that in the 1950's (I love Lucy days) they weren't even allowed to say the word "toilet" on television!!!! I thought that was interesting.
This television show, the original show with the original cast, is still one of the most heartwarming and beautiful that you can find. Director Ron Howard, who played the widowed Sheriff Taylor's motherless son, Opie, has credited Andy with teaching him how to be a kind and decent man.

But I had Great Aunts, and in many ways, both my great aunts were a grandmother to me, since they were my grandmother's sister, one of whom could never have kids of their own, so I was their grandchild So, yes, Aunt Bea was special to me. Great Aunts are grandmothers to those who never had a grandmother
I grew up in a small N.C. town in the 50s and 60s that was comparable to Mayberry in that most people knew each other and family history. It was a great time to be alive. The fact that we watch a black and white show on our large-screen hi-def TVs that is 60 years old is a tribute to its greatness.
I agree and disagree. The colored shows aren't considered abject failures just because Barney left. Sure, that didn't help matters. But the reason the show sucked so bad in the last three utterly pathetic seasons is because the entire show changed. The writers destroyed it. Andy was no longer the least bit funny, ridiculously stupid characters like Howard and Emmett were brought in, along with Warren and the episodes were just as stupid as the day is long. Not funny, not interesting and certainly not worth watching. Don't forget that Don Knotts wasn't in all of the black and white episodes but there were multitudes of them that were still wonderful shows! I love the fact that MeTV goes back to Season 1, Episode 1, after Season 5 ends. They aren't stupid. They know that nobody is watching those colored episodes. As for Aunt Bee, I never could stand her. I truly believe the series would have been MUCH better having Hope Summers, who played Clara Edwards, be Aunt Bee instead of Frances Bavier, who clashed with Andy Griffith behind the scenes constantly and in my opinion was the most annoying regular character on the show.
Floyd was played by Howard McNear. I read somewhere that when Andy Griffith and Don Knotts had to do a scene with McNear that they could never make it through without breaking up!
This show helped pass my time during the pandemic even tho I had seen everyone of them in the 60s when I was 10 years old. I'd watch them over and over. I think it was because they took me with them sitting on the porch after supper. The episodes with music were my most favorite. Especially when Jim Nabors sang. No cussing. No fighting. Just good clean scripts.
I love Rafe Hollister’s singing voice! There is still no comparison! Season 3 Episode 20; no I’m not a relative, I just love his voice. I also had a couple CDS of “The Darlings”
As Roy Rogers said in I believe the 90's could have been earlier then that....."Today they're making pictures that I wouldn't want Trigger to see." I know exactly what he would think now days. He was my childhood hero, I am in my mid-20s and let's just say kids anywhere near my age and I just don't get each other at all. I am always with the older folks. I just can't hardly stand being around the kids now days and all there fowl immoral ways. So sad. Oh the difference in children raised on say Lady Gaga (I only know her name and her crazy look) as opposed to Roy And Dale, Clint Walker, Gene Autry, and all the rest. I will take the Generation I identify with anyday.
Really the last 4-5 years of the series, Andy was rarely funny any more: he played more as the firm father authority figure. The laughs mainly came from the supporting cast.
One of my favorite shows. Andy Griffith show was great before Don Knotts left. After that I didn't really enjoy the later episodes just was not the same.
Opie and I are basically the same age, I grew up watching the Andy Griffith Show while he was in it. A wonderful nicer more innocent time in America that will never be repeated. (sigh)
I agree, but ONLY if you were a white, heterosexual. I would very much like to have a life in Mayberry, but we NEVER had a REAL life in Mayberry...it was fiction then and fiction now.
My town was like Andy of Mayberry and I was two years older than Opie and people did not cuss around children or ladies and you did not have to worry about kids having guns or drugs. And there were a number of rivers and creeks that we swam and fished in and we had to come in when the streetlights came on.
Frances Bavier was everyone's Aunt Bea, everyone's favorite Aunt. I was so lucky to have had several Aunt Beas. They are almost all gone, God bless them all.
No, but one of them made one heck of a chocolate meringue pie. The rest of them all had their specialties. Mama made the pickles and hers were fantastic. You ever had watermelon rind pickles? A real southern treat.
@@Magnetron33 I look back on the times when my cousins and I were kids. We would all get together at Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years Day. All of the Aunts and my mom's mother were all great cooks. My dad's mother was not cooking much by then, but the Aunts on that side of the family were good cooks, too. My Mama was the best cook of all. Dad's mother was born in 1889. That was only 24 years after the Civil War, her cooking was just country food. Her biscuits and gravy was mighty fine.

It just goes to show how great of an actress that Frances Bavier was because she made her character really come alive. That’s a rare talent that you don’t see much anymore today. To be a great actor, you have to leave your mark, and boy, did she leave hers. She’ll forever be Aunt Bee.
But that was the problem. So many actors are typecast and cannot get another job. She's forever Aunt Bee. Jethro is the same. Many others. Andy was blessed, where some are cursed. So sad.
Most of the shows from that time sucked just as much as the ones today. You can't compare a stand out show like this (or I Love Lucy etc) against what's out there today unless you compare the junk from back then to the junk today. (and if you want examples look up "Its About Time" and "My Mother the Car". All that said, I can't think of a single comedy today I can watch without getting nauseous. In the last 20 years comedies that stood out to me (YMMV) were Seinfeld, Everybody loves Raymond and even today, with Last Man Standing (ducks).
@@jondrew55 I've always been a harsh critic of anything new (last 25 years or so). Thought Seinfeld was the greatest thing since Andy Griffith. When it ended I thought well that's all she wrote, everything else is garbage. But then I stumbled on to The King of Queens. Really a top notch comedy show. Give it a watch. You won't be disappointed. Now that it's been over for a few years, I'm back to everything is garbage.
And when I need a "pick me up" with all the drama going on today I'll find an Andy Griffith Show and be whisked away to a more simpler and friendly place.

Regular tv has all those shows here in Detroit on ch 4.3(METV),and Ed sullivan on ch 2.5(don't remember the name). Stop paying 200 for cable & get a $25 digital antenna, $35 roku, and $50 wifi you'll save HUNDREDS per year.
Greatest TV serial of all time. Ranks with Laurel & Hardy, and all the great comedies of all time. Richly textured, restful, adventurous, humorous, all in perfect balance. Cured many illnesses for sure. Never fades.
I began watching this when I was young in the ‘60s. I swear this and other shows like it showed me what it meant to have good character. Lassie, Adam-12, Emergency all come to mind. I don’t think it’s a coincidence the difference in tv between then and now correlates between the societal violence then and now.
That's for sure. "The Andy Griffith Show" finished season 8 (its last) at No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings. Frances Bavier and Don Knotts both won Emmys for their work on this show.
I had read that the two had finally made up very late in her life so this confirms it. The Andy Griffith Show is one of the best shows still on TV. Best show to forget your troubles and have some laughs.
Amen to that! It's a great show to watch in today's absolutely warped society when everything that's always been considered right is now laughed at and impugned. Leave it to Beaver is also a great comfort show to watch along with The Rifleman.
I lived in North Carolina for 15 years starting in 1980 and went to every hospital in the state on business,my job . I met a lot of people that had met Frances Bavier and dealt with her as a patient. She could be dificult, at times but that was her advancing age. She was a good actor. I remember her from The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Andy Griffith Show. She always played a strong willed character. May she Rest In Peace.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My clueless parents took me to see The Day The Earth Stood Still. I was six years old and sat on the edge of the seat in my starched cotton dress. My mouth was dry, my hands were cold. I couldn’t take my eyes off that weird robot thing . Patricia Neal was the big star of the movie. Wow. Those were innocent times compared to what we are stuck with today.
Anyone that refuses to be a doormat is often labeled as “difficult”. Sometimes it’s everyone else and their cluelessness that is making things difficult.
One of the best all time television shows ever written, if not the best. It has played a huge part in shaping my character over the years and is still beloved by millions. I love these interviews, and wish Ralph Emery was still doing them. We sure miss Andy and we need him as part of our television today.
Not as clean and decent as you may think....Andy had an affair with Aneta Corsaut who played Helen Crump for over 30 yrs up until she passed away in 1995,Don Knotts had affairs also.

My 88 year old Mom loves the Andy Griffin show! She has to watch it every day! Thank you Andy for leaving such a great legacy ! Don Knotts was just so funny! His comic timing was phenomenal!
A very sweet story. My Dad was very abusive to me. When he was around 60 my parents divorced and my dad ended up meeting, and later marrying a wonderful Christian Lady who lead him to The Lord. I was in my early 40's when he called and asked my forgiveness. I had forgiven him years before for my own sake, but what a precious gift that phone call was and the special bond we had the last years of his life, as we were the only ones in our family who were saved by Grace.
Jesus is an awesome God. He will change lives for the better as you know. What a wonderful gift Jesus gave you with the bonding of your earthly father.
Andy Griffith had as much impact as Mr. Rodgers. A MALE single parent successfully raising a child while holding down a fulltime job. Produced some of the best comedy of all time.
@@joysoyo2416 No, Aunt Bee took care of household responsibilities, but Sheriff Taylor raised him. The fact that a single male parent even being ACTIVE in a child's life in the mid 60s was 50 years ahead of it's time.
I loved this show and when Don Knots left it wasn't the same. I wish he would've stayed on. In any case, I enjoy watching the reruns still today. I loved watching all of you. Matlock is another show I've enjoyed too. I also enjoy the albums you've made . You're a good singer and an inspiration to many people.
We could all use an Andy Griffith today. A great influence for all audiences of all races, ages, and sexes. His purity and transparency is what we need today to get through tough times. Even though I disagree with his political beliefs, he did a top-notch job of maintaining professionalism, civility, and overall treatment of others. A national treasure. Had I been born in the 1950s instead of 1997, I would've definitely had a great family show to tune into every week. No inappropriate swearing, no sexual content, slapstick violence only (which is always hilarious), and great stories with a message.
The Andy Griffith Show was the best show ever. It taught people morals and values in the best possible way. It is sad there are no good shows like that anymore.
I didn’t know that Andy worked on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Loved that movie. My favorite line was when Don was explaining what happened and gives that big sideways sniff, hitches up his pants to the point he’s standing on his toes and says “used my whole body as a weapon.”

That 1947 picture of Francis Bavia wearing the plaid shirt . She was absolutely stunning. As a young lady Aunt Bea was one beautiful lady . I really respect the way she lived her life , on her own terms . Hopefully she is resting in peace . Maybe she and Andy and Jim Nabors and probably some more from the show are all sitting around talking and enjoying heaven.

Andy talks about Lee Greenway in this video.Lee was the makeup artist for the show and many other shows and movies. Andy and Lee were very close friends and stayed in contact to the very end.They used to go on fishing/hunting trips and Andy visited Lee at his home in Rutherfordton,N.C.and Andy attended Lees funeral service in Rutherfordton. Lee is buried in the Rutnerfordton City Cemetery which I have visited. There is a picture of Lees grave online and his tombstone is an unusual looking white shaped kind of the shape of Gumby,but has no mention of Lees connection to Hollywood or fame. Thanks for reading. Loved that show, I used to watch it with my mom when I was a little boy, then later in life we once again were living together and we watched it together when I was a grown man and she was near the end of her life.
Interesting, I had the same experience. My mother and I would watch the show every morning while my dad was at work and sisters at school. I always cherished those memories. Recently she was diagnosed with Covid. I would take care of her and we would watch the Andy Griffith show. It reminded me of old times. By the grace of god she pulled through. Sorry for your loss.

The Andy Griffith Show is sitcom gold. I've seen every episode at least 100 times, and I still watch them every day. A lot of today's shows are only seen once with that being enough, leaving no desire to watch them again.
I agree that writers of the “now” ,shows , think we should all enjoy filthy language, sex oriented & explicit degrading of all, to be able to actually enjoy a program of higher moral content! What have we become?
This makes you cry because of all the people associated with the show have either died or are very old now and the world has changed so much that it doesn,t seem possible that television was really that good back then, but it really was and it is a horrible shame now that it isn,t that way anymore !!!!!
It was just the greatest time. Growing up getting to watch all of these episodes and enjoying every minute of it. It truly sucks knowing that we’ll never actually get to see them in person. But it’s nice to know that they built a museum to dedicate the show by. It’ll always be a favorite of mine for sure.
Who would've known that there were any problems with aunt Bee? She was one of the sweetest characters on the show! I adored everyone on the show especially, in the early years when Opie was just a little tiny boy. Thanks for sharing this with us all! XO
I still watch it on my (new day) Rabbit ears on ME Tv and still laughing as hard as the first time watching them! They don’t produce anything to this day as down to earth,moral principles and how to treat one another shows!!! RIP Andy
How ironic that Aunt Bee and Thelma Lou both ended up moving from Hollywood to Siler City ( near Andys real hometown ), and Mount Airy ( Andys real hometown). Easy to see where some of the shows towns got their names.... eg.... Mayberry sounds a lot like Mount Airy when pronounced, and the nearby Andy Griffith Show town of Mt. Pilot was the flip flopped name of the real Pilot Mountain which is near Andys hometown where Betty Lynn ( Thelma Lou ) now resides of Mount Airy. It seems that in some way the Hollywood town of Mayberry left such an impression on Frances Bavier and Betty Lynn that they desired to live in and feel that type of hometown atmosphere in real life.

Been there quite a few years and every year she shows up at the Andy Griffith Show Festival celebration and meets and greets fans, signs autographs, lets fans take pics, etc. Actually I think she makes appearances at one of the museums perhaps a couple of times per year in addition to the festival.She obviously loves it there and loved the show. It's about 2 hrs. 30 min.from where I live.
George Lindsay (Goober) also lived in North Carolina too. Siler City was mentioned a couple of times during the duration of the show and also in the 1986 reunion film. I'd take North Carolina over Hollywood any day.

I grew up watching the reruns. My boys and I watched the entire series. I catch my 15 year old whistling the opening when he is getting ready for school.. They loved it and still do. Nothing compares to this show. I wrote Ron Howard on Instagram. I told him thank you. Thank you for a show my two sons will love and watch with their children.
I don't think Andy Griffith was totally forthcoming on the "team" answer he gave. Don Knotts has said that he (Don) asked to be given a percentage of the show in order to stay on after his initial 5-year contract was up, and Andy refused to do that because it would've been taking money away from himself. Don said he understood Andy saying no, and there were no hard feelings. I'll say this, though. As a kid of the 1960's who loved that show, it basically ended after Don left. That show was a shell of its former self without Don. No disrespect to Andy, because that duo had been a straight man/comic team for 5 years. When one member of a team leaves, the "act" is over.
I've heard Don state in several interviews that in the beginning Andy said he would only do 5 years of the show. When the 5th season started and nobody was asking about contracts for another season Don signed a movie deal with Universal when the opportunity presented itself. He was shocked to find out shortly after that Andy had signed on to continue doing the show. He has said that he may likely have stayed with the show in some capacity if he knew the show would continue. I hadn't heard about Don's request for an ownership stake in the show.
@@chrisparker7256 I agree with you. The account you stated is the story (excluding the request by Don for a stake in the show) that was told by Andy and Don for years. If Don was bitter why would he have come back and done the guest appearances and then the reunion movies.
@@chrisparker7256...Your account was the same as I remember the story to be. I've seen those other interviews. Don went on to other projects making more comedy history at Universal. AGS went from black and white to color and without Barney. It just wasn't the same. Andy was lost without Don.

That may be because the interviewer was severely criticized on a RUclips thread by viewers for not knowing much about the Andy Griffith Show. He asked basic questions to the former cast members that any true-blooded, TV watching American would already know the answers to. He showed absolutely no enthusiasm. RUclipsRS quickly recognized his lack of knowledge regarding the show. But the actors like Don Knotts, George Lindsey (Goober), Hal Smith (Otis), Maggie Petersen were very gracious in attempting to compensate for his sub par interviewing skills. @2:29...his impassive expression spells it all.

A know-it-all interviewer at least knows what questions to ask. The problem is he/she may not shut up long enough to hear the answers. And sometimes they want to publickly showcase their knowledge of behind-the-scenes capers.
I listened to a RUclips interview once where a man sat down with Linda Kaye Henning from PETTICOAT JUNCTION. He, the interviewer, talked so much that if l didn't know any better l would've thought that Linda was interviewing him. He not only knew all the questions, he had all the answers. At the end Linda had to speak up in order to overshadow his constant cackle.

Spent my mother's last birthday laying in bed with her watching The Andy Griffith Show. She was terminally ill and wanted to watch something pleasant and positive, so we watched the show all day. I'll never forget it and am eternally grateful to that cast and crew for giving her that "pleasant" final birthday. I miss her so much but cherish the show because it was "there" for her when she needed that escape from her suffering on her last special day. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I saw ( I think it was Peter Jennings) him in an interview talking about how television has changed so much. He said that in the 1950's (I love Lucy days) they weren't even allowed to say the word "toilet" on television!!!! I thought that was interesting.

This television show, the original show with the original cast, is still one of the most heartwarming and beautiful that you can find. Director Ron Howard, who played the widowed Sheriff Taylor's motherless son, Opie, has credited Andy with teaching him how to be a kind and decent man.

I grew up in a small N.C. town in the 50s and 60s that was comparable to Mayberry in that most people knew each other and family history. It was a great time to be alive. The fact that we watch a black and white show on our large-screen hi-def TVs that is 60 years old is a tribute to its greatness.
The show was never the same after Barney left. Comedy genius !

I agree and disagree. The colored shows aren't considered abject failures just because Barney left. Sure, that didn't help matters. But the reason the show sucked so bad in the last three utterly pathetic seasons is because the entire show changed. The writers destroyed it. Andy was no longer the least bit funny, ridiculously stupid characters like Howard and Emmett were brought in, along with Warren and the episodes were just as stupid as the day is long. Not funny, not interesting and certainly not worth watching. Don't forget that Don Knotts wasn't in all of the black and white episodes but there were multitudes of them that were still wonderful shows!
I love the fact that MeTV goes back to Season 1, Episode 1, after Season 5 ends. They aren't stupid. They know that nobody is watching those colored episodes. As for Aunt Bee, I never could stand her. I truly believe the series would have been MUCH better having Hope Summers, who played Clara Edwards, be Aunt Bee instead of Frances Bavier, who clashed with Andy Griffith behind the scenes constantly and in my opinion was the most annoying regular character on the show.
Floyd the barber was one of my favorites. The way he enunciated those honest always searching phrases was comedic brilliance.

This show helped pass my time during the pandemic even tho I had seen everyone of them in the 60s when I was 10 years old. I'd watch them over and over. I think it was because they took me with them sitting on the porch after supper. The episodes with music were my most favorite. Especially when Jim Nabors sang. No cussing. No fighting. Just good clean scripts.

As Roy Rogers said in I believe the 90's could have been earlier then that....."Today they're making pictures that I wouldn't want Trigger to see." I know exactly what he would think now days. He was my childhood hero, I am in my mid-20s and let's just say kids anywhere near my age and I just don't get each other at all. I am always with the older folks. I just can't hardly stand being around the kids now days and all there fowl immoral ways. So sad. Oh the difference in children raised on say Lady Gaga (I only know her name and her crazy look) as opposed to Roy And Dale, Clint Walker, Gene Autry, and all the rest. I will take the Generation I identify with anyday.

The last 3 years were good, but the first 5 years were just magical.
Really the last 4-5 years of the series, Andy was rarely funny any more: he played more as the firm father authority figure. The laughs mainly came from the supporting cast.
It certainly took a different path after Don left.
Show was actually brutal to watch after Don left. Too much focus on life experiences and less on wholesome comedy sketches.
One of my favorite shows. Andy Griffith show was great before Don Knotts left. After that I didn't really enjoy the later episodes just was not the same.
The 5 with Don were legendary. It ran out of gas literally as soon as he left.
Opie and I are basically the same age, I grew up watching the Andy Griffith Show while he was in it. A wonderful nicer more innocent time in America that will never be repeated. (sigh)

My town was like Andy of Mayberry and I was two years older than Opie and people did not cuss around children or ladies and you did not have to worry about kids having guns or drugs. And there were a number of rivers and creeks that we swam and fished in and we had to come in when the streetlights came on.

I watch Andy Griffith every night on METV. It was always a charming show. My favorite episode was Aunt Bee’s pickles.
Frances Bavier was everyone's Aunt Bea, everyone's favorite Aunt. I was so lucky to have had several Aunt Beas. They are almost all gone, God bless them all.

No, but one of them made one heck of a chocolate meringue pie. The rest of them all had their specialties. Mama made the pickles and hers were fantastic. You ever had watermelon rind pickles? A real southern treat.

All of the Aunts and my mom's mother were all great cooks. My dad's mother was not cooking much by then, but the Aunts on that side of the family were good cooks, too. My Mama was the best cook of all. Dad's mother was born in 1889. That was only 24 years after the Civil War, her cooking was just country food. Her biscuits and gravy was mighty fine.

It just goes to show how great of an actress that Frances Bavier was because she made her character really come alive. That’s a rare talent that you don’t see much anymore today. To be a great actor, you have to leave your mark, and boy, did she leave hers. She’ll forever be Aunt Bee.
But that was the problem. So many actors are typecast and cannot get another job. She's forever Aunt Bee. Jethro is the same. Many others. Andy was blessed, where some are cursed. So sad.

Right. There is no comedy anymore. They don't write dialogue like they used to.
Most of the shows from that time sucked just as much as the ones today. You can't compare a stand out show like this (or I Love Lucy etc) against what's out there today unless you compare the junk from back then to the junk today. (and if you want examples look up "Its About Time" and "My Mother the Car". All that said, I can't think of a single comedy today I can watch without getting nauseous. In the last 20 years comedies that stood out to me (YMMV) were Seinfeld, Everybody loves Raymond and even today, with Last Man Standing (ducks).

When it ended I thought well that's all she wrote, everything else is garbage. But then I stumbled on to The King of Queens. Really a top notch comedy show. Give it a watch. You won't be disappointed. Now that it's been over for a few years, I'm back to everything is garbage.

Greatest TV serial of all time. Ranks with Laurel & Hardy, and all the great comedies of all time. Richly textured, restful, adventurous, humorous, all in perfect balance. Cured many illnesses for sure. Never fades.
I began watching this when I was young in the ‘60s. I swear this and other shows like it showed me what it meant to have good character. Lassie, Adam-12, Emergency all come to mind. I don’t think it’s a coincidence the difference in tv between then and now correlates between the societal violence then and now.
Good decision by Andy not to take the four year extension. The show left on a high note.

I had read that the two had finally made up very late in her life so this confirms it. The Andy Griffith Show is one of the best shows still on TV. Best show to forget your troubles and have some laughs.

I lived in North Carolina for 15 years starting in 1980 and went to every hospital in the state on business,my job . I met a lot of people that had met Frances Bavier and dealt with her as a patient. She could be dificult, at times but that was her advancing age. She was a good actor. I remember her from The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Andy Griffith Show. She always played a strong willed character. May she Rest In Peace.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My clueless parents took me to see The Day The Earth Stood Still. I was six years old and sat on the edge of the seat in my starched cotton dress. My mouth was dry, my hands were cold. I couldn’t take my eyes off that weird robot thing . Patricia Neal was the big star of the movie. Wow. Those were innocent times compared to what we are stuck with today.

A very sweet story. My Dad was very abusive to me. When he was around 60 my parents divorced and my dad ended up meeting, and later marrying a wonderful Christian Lady who lead him to The Lord. I was in my early 40's when he called and asked my forgiveness. I had forgiven him years before for my own sake, but what a precious gift that phone call was and the special bond we had the last years of his life, as we were the only ones in our family who were saved by Grace.
Jesus is an awesome God. He will change lives for the better as you know. What a wonderful gift Jesus gave you with the bonding of your earthly father.

I loved this show and when Don Knots left it wasn't the same. I wish he would've stayed on. In any case, I enjoy watching the reruns still today. I loved watching all of you. Matlock is another show I've enjoyed too. I also enjoy the albums you've made . You're a good singer and an inspiration to many people.

We could all use an Andy Griffith today. A great influence for all audiences of all races, ages, and sexes. His purity and transparency is what we need today to get through tough times. Even though I disagree with his political beliefs, he did a top-notch job of maintaining professionalism, civility, and overall treatment of others. A national treasure. Had I been born in the 1950s instead of 1997, I would've definitely had a great family show to tune into every week. No inappropriate swearing, no sexual content, slapstick violence only (which is always hilarious), and great stories with a message.

I didn’t know that Andy worked on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Loved that movie. My favorite line was when Don was explaining what happened and gives that big sideways sniff, hitches up his pants to the point he’s standing on his toes and says “used my whole body as a weapon.”
Nor did I know that Andy worked on The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. That is my all-time favorite Don Knotts movie.

I really respect the way she lived her life , on her own terms . Hopefully she is resting in peace . A sweet and quietly wonderful show. The bond Griffith and Knotts shared was obvious from their interplay.
The whole show was perfect. Casting, writing, set, situations, characters.

Andy talks about Lee Greenway in this video.Lee was the makeup artist for the show and many other shows and movies. Andy and Lee were very close friends and stayed in contact to the very end.They used to go on fishing/hunting trips and Andy visited Lee at his home in Rutherfordton,N.C.and Andy attended Lees funeral service in Rutherfordton. Lee is buried in the Rutnerfordton City Cemetery which I have visited. There is a picture of Lees grave online and his tombstone is an unusual looking white shaped kind of the shape of Gumby,but has no mention of Lees connection to Hollywood or fame. Thanks for reading. I reckon I go on too much sometimes, but I love all aspects of the Andy Griffith show. I also treasure a signed photo of Don Knotts I purchasef at an antique collectible toy store in Brevard, N.C. I live in NC and have been to Aunt Bee's house (drive by) and to her grave, where there are always jars of pickles randomly placed on the headstone.
Its a good thing he and Don left when they did. It allowed them to go on to other parts and enjoy a full career.
I loved his show Matlock.

Loved that show, I used to watch it with my mom when I was a little boy, then later in life we once again were living together and we watched it together when I was a grown man and she was near the end of her life.
Interesting, I had the same experience. My mother and I would watch the show every morning while my dad was at work and sisters at school. I always cherished those memories. Recently she was diagnosed with Covid. I would take care of her and we would watch the Andy Griffith show. It reminded me of old times. By the grace of god she pulled through. Sorry for your loss.
@@squashhead1374 Glad your mom pulled through, I'm a respiratory therapist and I seen so many sad cases. Yes, those old shows are priceless, not so much because we enjoyed them, but because of the memories. Take care and I'm glad your mom recovered.
My late husband Karl and I had a 100 gallon fish tank , and we named all the fish after the characters, on the show. TRUE STORY.

One of my favorite characters of the show was “Ernest T Bass“ played by the incomparable Howard Jerome Morris. “Old man Kelsey‘s creek, old man Kelsey‘s pond, old man Kelsey‘s ocean!“

The Andy Griffith Show is sitcom gold. I've seen every episode at least 100 times, and I still watch them every day. A lot of today's shows are only seen once with that being enough, leaving no desire to watch them again.
I agree that writers of the “now” ,shows , think we should all enjoy filthy language, sex oriented & explicit degrading of all, to be able to actually enjoy a program of higher moral content! What have we become?
This makes you cry because of all the people associated with the show have either died or are very old now and the world has changed so much that it doesn,t seem possible that television was really that good back then, but it really was and it is a horrible shame now that it isn,t that way anymore !!!!!

It was just the greatest time. Growing up getting to watch all of these episodes and enjoying every minute of it. It truly sucks knowing that we’ll never actually get to see them in person. But it’s nice to know that they built a museum to dedicate the show by. It’ll always be a favorite of mine for sure.
Who would've known that there were any problems with aunt Bee? She was one of the sweetest characters on the show!

I still watch it on my (new day) Rabbit ears on ME Tv and still laughing as hard as the first time watching them! They don’t produce anything to this day as down to earth,moral principles and how to treat one another shows!!! RIP Andy
Been watching it at least 35 years and still do today at 55. Never has been a show like it. Just makes you feel good!
How ironic that Aunt Bee and Thelma Lou both ended up moving from Hollywood to Siler City ( near Andys real hometown ), and Mount Airy ( Andys real hometown). Easy to see where some of the shows towns got their names.... eg.... Mayberry sounds a lot like Mount Airy when pronounced, and the nearby Andy Griffith Show town of Mt. Pilot was the flip flopped name of the real Pilot Mountain which is near Andys hometown where Betty Lynn ( Thelma Lou ) now resides of Mount Airy. It seems that in some way the Hollywood town of Mayberry left such an impression on Frances Bavier and Betty Lynn that they desired to live in and feel that type of hometown atmosphere in real life.
@EMD-E8 Very welcome.... l am certain many Andy Griffith show fans have similar thoughts about those ironies about one of if not the greatest TV sitcom ever made. Todays sitcoms are pathetic compared to the goings on in the fictional but almost real town of Mayberry don't you think ? Thanks EMD-E8.

Been there quite a few years and every year she shows up at the Andy Griffith Show Festival celebration and meets and greets fans, signs autographs, lets fans take pics, etc. Actually I think she makes appearances at one of the museums perhaps a couple of times per year in addition to the festival.She obviously loves it there and loved the show. It's about 2 hrs. 30 min.from where I live.
George Lindsay (Goober) also lived in North Carolina too. Siler City was mentioned a couple of times during the duration of the show and also in the 1986 reunion film. I'd take North Carolina over Hollywood any day.

I grew up watching the reruns. My boys and I watched the entire series. I catch my 15 year old whistling the opening when he is getting ready for school.. They loved it and still do. Nothing compares to this show. I wrote Ron Howard on Instagram. I told him thank you. Thank you for a show my two sons will love and watch with their children.

I don't think Andy Griffith was totally forthcoming on the "team" answer he gave. Don Knotts has said that he (Don) asked to be given a percentage of the show in order to stay on after his initial 5-year contract was up, and Andy refused to do that because it would've been taking money away from himself.
Don said he understood Andy saying no, and there were no hard feelings. I'll say this, though. As a kid of the 1960's who loved that show, it basically ended after Don left. That show was a shell of its former self without Don. No disrespect to Andy, because that duo had been a straight man/comic team for 5 years. When one member of a team leaves, the "act" is over.
I've heard Don state in several interviews that in the beginning Andy said he would only do 5 years of the show. When the 5th season started and nobody was asking about contracts for another season Don signed a movie deal with Universal when the opportunity presented itself. He was shocked to find out shortly after that Andy had signed on to continue doing the show. He has said that he may likely have stayed with the show in some capacity if he knew the show would continue. I hadn't heard about Don's request for an ownership stake in the show.
@@chrisparker7256 I agree with you. The account you stated is the story (excluding the request by Don for a stake in the show) that was told by Andy and Don for years. If Don was bitter why would he have come back and done the guest appearances and then the reunion movies.
@@chrisparker7256...Your account was the same as I remember the story to be. I've seen those other interviews. Don went on to other projects making more comedy history at Universal. AGS went from black and white to color and without Barney. It just wasn't the same. Andy was lost without Don.
@@chrisparker7256 You have the factual story. Don had already signed another contract. Andy would have gladly brought him back. Not sure where the Don asking for a % of the show came form. From all I have read or seen it's jsut not true.
Kind of like when Hoss ( Dan Blocker ) died on Bonanza that shows demise began.
