Don Knotts' Barney Fife character elevated the show to classic status. When he left, no natural comedy element remained. Kudos to Andy Griffith for realizing early on that the hick sheriff bit wasn't going to fly, especially since he was playing the essentially serious role of a widower raising a five-year-old.
I respectfully disagree. Andy's becoming a serious character in the fourth season badly damaged the show. When Goober or one of the other characters does something goofy and Andy gets a peevish expression on his face, I wince. If Andy has no empathy for Mayberry's characters, then why should the viewer?
@@teastrainer3604 - By early on, I'm going as far back to the spin-off pilot from the Danny Thomas Show which had Andy as a stereotypical, almost buffoonish hayseed character. Some of that continued into the first proper episode, with Barney introduced as his cousin. Griffith sensed something was off and quickly retooled the show making Barney the featured wacky, laugh-getting, nervous deputy character and Sheriff Andy Taylor a more normal, reasonable and responsible type; in essence, the straight man of the duo. The show then became very consistent throughout Don Knotts' tenure. I suspect that what you observed along the way with Griffith's performance might have been due to his over-involvement with the production and writing of the show. He took no credit except as an actor but he worked on the making of every episode and was essentially in charge creatively. The peevishness you perceived (which I doubt too many other viewers did) may have been due to things (which could have included other characters or actors' performances) not being up to his desired standards.
@@Noomz-of-Earl I'm fully aware of all that. I'm saying that the last five seasons of the show were nothing compared to the first three seasons, and it all had to do with Andy's turning serious and looking down on Mayberry's boneheads.. In the beginning he managed to be more sensible than the cast's eccentrics while also being funny. Andy G.od Mayberry, IS one of the BEST family pilots to ever launch‼️In my perspective. It spoke to ALL ages. Its that good!! Families can watch these episodes all together on the couch. Now a older grandpa. I'm watching with my grandkids. :)
This was the BEST T.V. show of all time! I still laugh at every episode, even though I've seen each one dozens of times. I wish we had good, clean, DECENT T.V. shows today, but we DO NOT! I also enjoyed The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie...good, moral, decent T.V. shows. I hardly ever turn on the T.V. these days...it's pretty much trash, sex or violence.
Ms Ellie, I always thought you were a Major part of the show, I hated you didn't come back! They should have gotten down on their knees for you, I sure would have! Loved this show growing up, Still do! RIP to all the Great Actors that made this Show Great!
I hate when politics are interjected where they don’t belong. Thinking about the hate engendered by Trump has nothing to do with the love for your neighbor that was on display on that show.
Miss Peggy the nurse was perfect for Andy, she was very sweet, I don't know why they didn't keep her on the show as a regular, Helen was always angry, and Ellie was too independent and hostile.
True, she did, tho she also had her sweet moments. I liked her better than Helen 😬. It wouldn't have had the funny elements if they were 100% perfectly wonderful tho 😆.
I met Mr. Griffith in 1969 while I was in the Air Force, and he was staying at the hotel where I was moonlighting as a bellhop. This famous star had a suite just off the lobby and he would leave his door open so literally anyone could stick their head in and talk to him. If memory serves, he had a bottle of booze on the table, and a couple of long haired dachshunds that he would walk through the lobby and out into the parking lot. Most people were too shy to speak to him, but those that did have stories they are still telling their great grandchildren!!
I watch the show just about every day. It honestly reminds me of the town that I grew up in. Best TV show still, to this day. It will always be relevant.
Reading some of these comments made me realize it wasn’t just me that watched this show for comfort. When I go through tough times, I always binge watch the Andy Griffith Show. It puts my life in perspective.
I was happy to hear Andy tell about not wanting the mayor character(s). I finally decided mayors might hold some sway in terms of working against them if they didn't kiss the ring. By the way, my vacation trip to Mt Airy NC was one of the best of my 70 years.
These actors are so complimentary towards each other. I like that. The Andy Griffith show was so realistic, the acting was so true to real life. I still love this show. I thought Elinor Donahue did a great job as Ellie. I was hoping Andy would marry her.
One of the top 5 shows all time and how incredible of Andy to give Don that credit and the humility, honor, values, and congruence and character there was in this show and cast! I miss these times desperately. There should be an "Andy Griffith National Day" to honor the cast, values and show and America! Same with Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross.
That Opie / Andy relationship was the baseline, along with the Andy Barney one.... It made it fun, wholesome, and fine. Father son relationships should take it for a pattern.... As in "make sure of all things, hold fast to what is fine" (1Thess.5 :21) that was a' fine' pattern to put before the public. Love Elinor Donahue and her role wish they could've held on to her! I could even see her as Opies Mom, no one else though.....
Don says that Andy said that he would not do the show for more than five years so that's why he (Don) left. But I don't understand why he didn't at least discuss it with Andy before making the decision to leave.
Every time there's a question about how a police officer behaves toward his arrestees, wonder, how would Sheriff Taylor handle this? I know it's simplistic and I'm certainly never in the position of a policeman, but it would seem to be pertinent.
This was great. I was most impressed with the courage Elinor Donohue showed describing her personal viewpoint and a soft side many would keep to themselves. (possbly a different episode of this series). I didn't realize also that she was the same actress from Father Knows Best, really impressive - such a different character, and obviously a different stage of life.
LoL, I liked the one where Barney insists they needed a police dog but the ol' mutt doesn't like him very much but accidentally helps them catch the escaped convict
My wife and I watch it nearly every night on Pluto TV (we like to watch the older shows like Little House on the Prairie or Matlock, etc). Still see an episode now and then we somehow have never seen. We think it is the best show of all time. Barney the best character and Andy the best straight man. Was just a great show.
You were wrong, Elinore! I Love that show, one of the very best ever in my opinion, but 2 things about the casting taking a wrong turn always bothered me. The first, most obvious, was Barney leaving the show when he did. The show was never nearly as good or the same without him. The second was the loss of Elinore Donahue. I was never a fan of hers or the show she was on before, Father Know’s Best, but I loved her on Andy Griffith. She seemed to be just the right fit for Andy, the yin to his yang, the differences allowing her to draw some of Andy’s inners out, which seemed to occur in subtle and not so subtle ways in each episode. I loved her personality on the show, and I loved her affect on Andy & visa versa. To make matters worse, the woman he did wind up with, Helen Crump, was a relative stick in the mud, whom I never took to. Elinore Donahue never did find her place on another show, despite her appearing in quite a few pilots & short runs. If Elinore had worked out on Andy’s show, she’d be right up there now as a memorable tv character icon.
They didn’t have to tie Andy down. As with many relationships on comedy shows, they could easily have stretched out their pre relationship business to initial friendship, conscious to subconscious flirtations, interest in other dates, and misunderstandings for a couple or few seasons before finally hooking up.
I loved watching Elinor Donahue on "Father Knows Best" but loved her even more on "The Andy Griffith Show". I sure wish that she had stayed for her full three year contract. Too bad that they did not have royalty residuals back then as that may well have enticed her to stay a while longer. I didn't like Helen Crump much either, but one that I most certainly did was that Southern Belle Johanna Moore. Oh what a wonderful actress she was! So beautiful and classy in her actions. One of my faves from that series for sure. Too bad that she did not appear in a lot more episodes and especially with that natural southern accent. She would have made a great partner for sheriff Andy. To this day, nobody knows why she disappeared from that show so quickly, but it great loss for sure. 😪😪
DITTO on Johanna Moore, a sweetheart & smart❣️ Head and shoulders above any other he dated, especially Crump. Ironically, Griffith & Crump were reportedly quite an item for quite a while off stage 😏
One of my nieces went to University, she said that one of her professors rushed out of the classroom exactly at 3:00 p.m. so he could get home to watch The Andy Griffith Show at 3:30.
I hate that Don Knotts left the show. It was never the same after his departure. However, I’m so glad we got The Ghost and Mr. Chicken and his other work after his departure
Andy Griffith was an incredibly gifted actor, and a naturally witty and funny man. Andy could have very easily carried the show on his own if he had too,but Andy also had good insight and the ability to see the talent in others and let them shine. Andy did that with Don,he also discovered and was responsible for giving Jim Nabors his big break and own show,Gomer Pyle USMC. Andy also believed very much in Jerry Van Dyke and helped him along. I love Andy and Don. They were magic together. Don wanted to be a team with Andy, and said he regretted leaving The Andy Griffith Show. And the tone of the show changed forever when Don left. Jack Burns couldnt fill his shoes. I am reading the book "Andy and Don" right now.
Anyone who has ever seen Andy Griffith in A FACE IN THE CROWD with Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau would have to admit that Andy is just as talented as Marlon Brando. And he didn't take himself as seriously as Brando.
I loved Elinor Donahue's "Ellie" on the show's first season. They could have used her more and the show would have worked even if they weren't able to get Don Knotts. She was also amazing on her one episode of Star Trek, where her character was very unpleasant. In both cases, her acting was brilliant.
We still use the catchphrases like Nippet in the bud and aunt bee call the man. But it’s interesting to know that Don Knotts didn’t do well with those movies. The first one the ghost and Mr. chicken was a take off of the haunted house episode on the Andy Griffith show. And the first script that Don got was so terrible the Andy and Don spent the weekend rewriting it. And Don took no riders credit or got paid but helped Don just because he was his friend. That movie is one of my all-time favorite movies. I loved the one about the computer hacking thing with the city government job. I think the name fig was used had a frame a fig I think. It had a lot of well-known character actors as did the ghost chicken movie. And who can forget Mr. limpet. One of my favorite Andy Griffith episodes is not the ones that everyone else loves. The refrigerator for the freezer show with getting it wholesale and it not working and he kept saying aunt Bea call the man. With the dogs following her down the street with all the defrosting beef in the wagon. And then there’s the loaded goat episode. And the motorcycle one is a classic as is Barney giving the governor a parking ticket and getting drunk because Otis dumped his liquor into the water dispenser. And the still at the sister‘s house. All very classic episodes oh and Opie’s newspaper yeah that was really good.
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen And I agree that an elected Sheriff doesn’t have to answer to a town Mayor Elinore Donahue was an absolute Babe!! And aunt Bee was a saint Opie was just a good kid Barney made the show!!!
Ron Howard and Elinore Donahue are the sole survivors of the show, and Ron is 70!! and Elinore is 86!!!
Opies friend Johnny Paul Jason played by Keith Thibedeaux in 19 episodes and of I Love Lucy is still alive. He's 73.
Ron’s brother is still alive. I mean, I know he wasn’t a regular, but he was on the show.
I’m 48 years old and recently started watching Andy Griffith with my mom. What a fantastic show

On Monday nights Allan Newsome does a podcast on youtube about the Andy Griffith Show. It is a nice time to reminisce about the show.
Thanks! I'll have to check that out.@@vanmoody
Ms Ellie, I always thought you were a Major part of the show, I hated you didn't come back! They should have gotten down on their knees for you, I sure would have! Loved this show growing up, Still do! RIP to all the Great Actors that made this Show Great!
She wouldn't put up with Andy being handsy.
Ron; Pa? 'Yes' What's the matter with Barney? 'He's just a nut'.
the funny line that surprised me was when Andy said to Opie, "I liked it better before you knew how to talk"
I LOVE ANDY 4 ever!
Aunt Bea was a wonderful actress who added a lot to the show as well.
Might have been a good actress but according to Andy.......she wasn't very pleasant to work with!! 😢
One of my favorite shows ❤ all cast members were awesome so whole some people in the Town of Mayberry
This is what Make America Great Again means to me. Love this era.
I hate when politics are interjected where they don’t belong. Thinking about the hate engendered by Trump has nothing to do with the love for your neighbor that was on display on that show.
@@markhutchison2240 Sounds like someone has TDS….
@@markhutchison2240so sad that you have a terminal case of TDS.
A majority white town run by bumbling good ole boys.
So glad America has made progress!
I always thought Ron Howard was the most natural kid actor I'd ever seen, Don Knotts is so right!
I loved Ellie on the show - I'm sorry it didn't work out for her ❤.
Ellie was too independent and had a hot temper, Andy needed a woman with a career but sweeter, like the nurse
She was an extremely great loss to the character and essence of the show. I can only wish how great it would have been if she had stayed!
She does not give herself enough credit. I think she was great on the show!
Sheldon Leonard was so talented they dedicated his name to the characters on The Big Bang Theory.
Andy says "because of the nature of the show, morality just came along with it" Spoken Words you would NEVER hear today!!💔😢
Morality? Andy and Don were both womanizers who had affairs.
So many lovely memories of the show.
I was happy to hear Andy tell about not wanting the mayor character(s). I finally decided mayors might hold some sway in terms of working against them if they didn't kiss the ring.
By the way, my vacation trip to Mt Airy NC was one of the best of my 70 years.
The Andy Griffith show and Danny Thomas show were the two best shows EVER!
I wish i could climb inside my TV and live in Mayberry! ❤
LoL, I grew up in a small rural town and there's always a cast of nutty people like that in small towns
@@williamsherman1089 Yes, Bethesda, Arkansas is my old hometown. Population about 150!
Barney was the best comedic character I have ever seen
I really miss Don Knotts.
I really miss a whole lot of people that have passed on including him.
This is my evening go-to Monday through Friday helps relax me in the evening before bed. Still one of television's all time great shows
Such a humble interview.
Andy gives so much credit to Don Knotts
Don Knotts played piano once at Westlake Joes in Daly City, CA. Very random, I guess he had family in the area
One of the best videos on youtube. So good!
Love this show.
This show and others like Leave It To Beaver in many ways was like the world I lived in everyday as a young grade schooler
Love this Show !! I’ve probably seen every show many times .. ❤😂😂
Thankful to the deepest depths that this show exists. I need it in these terrible, ‘mental’ times.
LoL, you too? I watch them just so I can see normal human beings again even if they were fictional characters
A class act....thanks👍
These actors are so complimentary towards each other. I like that. The Andy Griffith show was so realistic, the acting was so true to real life. I still love this show. I thought Elinor Donahue did a great job as Ellie. I was hoping Andy would marry her.
She wouldn't put up with the star's treatment of women.
Thank you for sharing with the rest of us. A man like Andy existed in my life who was my grandfather ❤.
Friends posted this..l stopped my choirs..and watched this...memories...😢 thank for sharing❤❤
I would of like to see more people from the show that were alive in 2006, when they did this interview.
My favorite episode is "Mister McBeevee".
We watch the show every single day. I have to wear suspenders and a belt to keep my trousers up so my now wife calls me ‘Mr. McBeevee’.
Excellent episode! What terrific writing and acting!
LoL, I liked the one where Barney insists they needed a police dog but the ol' mutt doesn't like him very much but accidentally helps them catch the escaped convict
Up in Barney's room is one of my favorite episodes.
I loved the Andy Griffith show and Matlock. I bought all the tapes of Matlock. Andy Griffith and Don Knots are the best actors and I miss them. ❤
Andy cheated on his wife and had multiple affairs, along with Don.
Family values, right?
My wife and I watch it nearly every night on Pluto TV (we like to watch the older shows like Little House on the Prairie or Matlock, etc). Still see an episode now and then we somehow have never seen. We think it is the best show of all time. Barney the best character and Andy the best straight man. Was just a great show.
My earliest memories sitting too close to the TV again sit back Ronald! 📺 ❤️ 🍼 😊
I watch it every night.
Thanks for editing these all together : )
😢😢😢😢 I grew up with all of them I wish in today world we would have the love like the old days never again love you all 😢❤
Best show ever
Agree 100%. I loved her on this show. And never was a real fan of Helen. Wished Elinor had stayed on the show.
@@raymeedc Yes, too bad Andy didn't dump Crump but kept in touch with beautiful Peggy McMillian. They made a much better couple.
I noticed the change in opis roll in the beginning episodes..glad andy and rons dad had that amicable chat
Elinor, A Real Beauty, Inside and Out.
❤. Love Andy and crew.
It is always a way to go home just watching the show gives you peace
However it happened, the AG show was wonderful. The, now - it’s stood the test of time.
Anyone who has ever seen Andy Griffith in A FACE IN THE CROWD with Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau would have to admit that Andy is just as talented as Marlon Brando. And he didn't take himself as seriously as Brando.
A Face In The Crowd is one of the most powerful movies ever made. Andy was excellent.
Thank you.
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen
And I agree that an elected Sheriff doesn’t have to answer to a town Mayor
Elinore Donahue was an absolute Babe!!
And aunt Bee was a saint
Opie was just a good kid
Barney made the show!!!
