    I'm running the oil to water oil cooler form a Forester on my BRZ now. The thing I like the most about it is how it gets the oil temp up to operating temp quickly and keeps it there.
    Over the summer I ran on the track with it and the highest my oil temps got was about 240f/115c. It hovered around 110-115c. My temp sender was in the location you had your pressure sender. The car was mostly stock.
    I'm running Castrol 0w30. At around 800rpm I'm reading about 18 psi at 90c. I replaced the oe oil pressure switch with my gauges sender, so I'm reading from that spot.
    Now the car is running an HKS supercharger and I plan on getting an oil to air cooler. The role of the oil to water cooler now will be more along the lines of a oil warmer and temp regulator. I think it will keep the oil temps around 80c to 90c even in the winter with a oil to air cooler.

      +Lavos 1999 Thanks for the comment, keep the post up to date as you do more. That 0w30 maybe too thin for track with supercharger, keep eye on pressures at higher RPM when temps get to 240.

    • @Lavos1999
      @Lavos1999 7 лет назад

      +savagegeese Apparently it's a "heavy" 30. There seems to be a bit of ambiguity with the specs of oil. It's colloquially know as "German Castrol", a group 4 based, SAE SL, really decent oil. I may switch to Redline's line of oils. maybe a 5w40. Although I don't like large spreads in viscosity as friction modifiers are less stable afaik. I'm a little out of my comfort zone with the 30 weight spread now. I"ll have to research and see how oil has come as far as that.

      +Lavos 1999 I found from all of my data collecting a few things about the 86. Biggest issue is low oil pressures and thats a big issue with heat, track use with forced induction. That said modern top level oils still seems to protect well even when outside heat range. I ran 0w20 redline at 265F-275F with supercharger and had Turbowski run a 45 minute session flat out full tank to empty. After the car was idling horribly, and pressures were barely registering at 1000rpm. Sent the oil out for analysis, zero wear materials, no breakdown of oil. Did similar tests with 10w30 and 10w40. 40 was as high as I would go as the trade offs in cold starts and normal driving are too much. Its only good for high heat and track. Rest of the year in cold and winter I used 0w20 as long as oil temps were always below 212F which in cold was never an issue. I am going to be doing a video about heat ranges of oil and the myths about that, sounds like you know your shit so may not help.

    Great informative video, really taught me a lot about oil temp and pressure in relation to the 86. I've been noticing the same data that you've been collecting and ill be installing an oil cooler asap. I live in socal and run e85 exclusively so id like to keep running 0-20w for easier cold starts, but my temps get up to 220f from normal driving and 235f + from even light canyon runs. At 235f my oil pressure reads near 0f at idle. So thats why i decided on a perrin oil cooler and maybe running thicker oil for the track. btw i believe your fly is open at 10:24.

    Great series. I laughed my ass off watching your videos, especially the reviews of the Mazda. Soooo anyway, I just bought the same car, a 2015 3i GT, and I agree with your assessment of the crap IP (haven't had a chance to lacerate my forehead on the package shelf yet, but looking forward to that too).
    So I was looking for a way to restore some readable information to the dash, like a decent tach plus an actual water temp to replace the idiot lamp, and maybe even an analog fuel gauge, because, you know, gas. The aftermarket gauge you have in your video is Very Cool and looks like it gets me most of the way there.
    Who makes it? Does it run off a remote sender or the OBDII port? Anything else I should know? Good luck with the videos, will subscribe.

    Why would they design so much oil pressure when cold?
    My VW is usually 80-100 PSI only when below freezing, usually 40-60PSI driving around town/freeway. I want to say there is a bypass at 125PSI. 0w40 year round (air temp -5F-90F)

  • @BrodeyDoverosx
    @BrodeyDoverosx 9 лет назад +1

    Why 10w-40 as opposed to Mobil 1 0w-40
    Or Amsoil dominator 5w-50., that way you keep your modern start up protection but maintain good pressure on the track.

    • @savagegeese

      Oils like 0w40 vs 10w40 dont hold viscosity as well at the higher temperatures. They are rated at 200F its beyond that they struggle compared.

  • @kurtracer22
    @kurtracer22 Год назад

    The data provided above in the written info section seems to suggest that after 9 laps on the track all 3 viscosities performed within a few PSI of each other? and that the higher viscosity oil ran SIGNIFICANTLY hotter after 9 laps, but did very little to increase pressure? Am i reading the data incorrectly? It certainly appears that once the oil is at track-pace temperature, PSI is very consistent(below optimal), regardless of initial viscosity. Higher viscosity only results in higher oil temperature.

    Hi Savegegeese ^^. I write it because i m not american. I heared you said there is an overcooling problem with the stock FRS + oil cooler with thermostatic . I contacted Mishimoto chat support, and I requested more technical information about that. They respond "we don't have the % open when the thermotatics is closed" & "Pat Muschamp: Koj, unfortunately I do not understand your question. We created the Thermostatic unit to prevent overcooling the oil in colder climates." Is there a well-known problem, all over the world, in all Cooler with a thermostatic ? Is there any interest to sell a cooler with no solution about the overcooling problem ? And last question, if we live in a country with only -10°C in winter, will I have at 100% sure that problem ? Because we have often 10-35°C, and sometimes -3°C...

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  9 лет назад +1

      Yes, for sure. I tested with 3 gauges before this one to double check accuracy. Its within 2-3 PSI of others. How long it lasts is debatable.

    • @AZPInstalls
      @AZPInstalls 9 лет назад

      savagegeese Yup, that's the question. We've had such poor longevity on those gauges we've stopped installing them for customers almost altogether. We've had much better success with Defi and Innovative and even the Autometers. Currently we run the P3Cars Vent gauge and will have the Oil Pressure wired into the 2 empty slots of the P3 Cars one.
      We found that the OEM 2015 WRX Oil-Coolant Heat Exchanger is good at bringing down the temps on track from 279 to about 265 and is a great choice for the occasional tracker/beginner and street driver especially here in the Northeast.

    Great vid, i track my n/a brz pretty heavily and am concerned about heat. I have gottten cam angle sensor codes (heat related), have stalIed out entering the paddock on warm days after hot laps and am down on power more than an acceptable amount later in the day which i suspect is oil temp related. I have a nameless header/ tune that is very conservative and an mfactory 4.67 final drive that puts me at high rpm's for good lengths of time and run mostly at vir in virginia. I have stayed with mobil 1 0-20, have a mishimoto race thermostat and use water wetter. Can you please recommend what I should do this season to minimize heat related power loss and engine wear? I suspect, do like you said and add an oil cooler, oil pressure gauge/ temp gauge but with what oil viscocity? Thanks! Eric

    Sorry just to be clear, if I'm not pushing the car in track use, and I daily the car all year long, then the standard 0w-20 will be fine? I don't really do much past aggressive street driving at best. I live in Illinois near Chicago so winters can be rough. And the plan is for forced induction, so will I need to step up to the oil cooler and increase the weight of the oil? I'm a dumbass when it comes to this stuff, but you clearly have experience with all this

    • @savagegeese

    savagegeese I'm curious about your experience with the Perrin oil cooler during winter. I live in Canada where temperatures can drop below -20F in the winter. Do you think I would have problems getting the oil up to temperature or over cooling? The car is NA and serves as my DD, and sees lots of Auto X, but perhaps only a handful of track days every year (I hope to do more but we only one track within the province) during which I'm worried about my oil pressures. Do you think I even need an oil cooler, or could I get away with just going to some thicker oil (10W-30 or 40)? If I do run the cooler, is there an easy way to bypass/disconnect it in the winter? Thanks, and sorry for the very long post.

    You have talked a lot about the need for an oil cooler and the pros and cons of running various oil grades in this car, all the while making some good points. But you haven't considered a coolant to oil heat exchanger yet. The idea being, a heat exchanger will bring the oil temps up quicker in winter if you have an oil cooler and will also help to keep the oil temp from going too high if you don't. But obviously it will not be as efficient as a dedicated oil cooler for cooling the oil. So ideally you would want an oil cooler plus a heat exchanger, wouldn't you?
    We know that tracking this car without cooling the oil is a mistake - with or without forced induction. At the very least Toyota/Subaru should have included this rather simple mechanism of keeping the oil temps in check. Here is a guy adding one to his BRZ ruclips.net/video/21qWLjhRlfY/видео.html then comparing the results.

      in the past my track 260 at 7000 rpm had me at ~60 psi with amsoil 10w30.
      despite these variables i am surprised to see how vaslty different our readings are - for example even your 10w40 did not hit 100 psi (although close-ish) and my 60 looks nicer across the board. so i'm wondering
      1. is my location overstating oil pressure?
      2. was your particular oil cooler causing a large pressure drop?
      3. a mix of both?
      4. was yours small? i am still surprised to see you hit 265 with an air/oil cooler, unless you were really driving the shit out of it, even with the blower?

      Start with 10w40. Keep an eye on pressures.

      If you are going be driving around freezing or below in winter stick with 5w30. Abover 50F, 10w40 in summer. You will need oil cooler to be safe but block off or disconnect when very cold.

    Hello, is data you posted with oil cooller? If yes, where i can see the oil pressures without oil cooler? I think without oil cooller it will be different.

      This was tested with and without cooler. Without oil cooler temps will be even higher and pressures will drop further.

      +savagegeese oil galery plug is the best place for oil pressure? I have a chance to install in oil sandwich plate also.
      I have goodspeed oil cooler with sandwich plate in my gt86, its good for oil infiltration?
      And more - wich oil your recomend for FA20 with turbokit 0-20, 5-30, 5-40?

    how about for hotter countries for daylie ? still staying 0w20 or i might consider 5w30 ?

      I live in Southeast Asia; Philippines, really hot weather here. The track guys I talked to reccomends 5w30 oil. I saw a post in the ft86 forums too saying 0w20 isnt so advisable either! I ran 5w30 in my n/a brz and i use it as a daily. I'll just let it idle for around 1-3 minutes before leaving the house to be sure.
      Here's the forum post I read

    Come on... The Gt86/brz is not a rocket, i'm aghast on how many spun bearings stories i heard and see on FA20. I love this help, but in theory a good engine designed from a good car manufacter company shouldn't need all this cautions and tools to monitor the engine :( . The gt86 ends up to be a broken dream... no power (still bearable) no reliability (unbearable). Such a bad ending about the child of AE86
