- We're installing a 2017+ instrument cluster with the digital display into my 2014 FRS. This will work with any 13-16 FRS or BRZ as long as you follow the steps shown in the video. The digital display gives shows us useful information that we didn't previously have access to like the oil temp and G meter.

Have always wanted to look for a reliable forum to retrofit a 17+ cluster onto the previous gen, now it’s all included into a reliable video that was super easy to follow. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Does ECUtek cable work with techstream?
Now this is the content we need!!!
as a 2016 brz owner i really appreciate this video!! thank you very much!
dude you explained everything nicely so if someone else were to do this, it would make sense. you left links for everything you used and u even time stamped everything. kay im subbed ur awesome
Thanks for the support! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Can't wait for the 2022+ cluster retrofit video. The new cluster looks so bad ass.
Haha I wish we could make the new one work too! I'm content with the new one though!
@@KevinVo Maybe in a few years we'll get an update video. But you weren't kidding when you said it's a lot more complex of a mod. Good shit!
I may not intend to swap clusters, but I like the presentation for assembly/dis-assembly of the dash and console. Just in case I ever need to get in there.
Awesome vid! Keep it coming, this was an awesome addition
Wow, this is a great guide. Thanks Kevin!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing! I have always wanted to do this. Thanks for video!
Of course, happy to help! This was a very rewarding install!
Great video, Kevin! Awesome as always.
Thanks for watching!
@@KevinVo Would the procedure be different with my push-button start as far as getting the key to register? Thanks!
@@GloveBunniesVideos You wouldn't need to register a ket for push-to-start cars.
@@KevinVo Thanks!
Wuao man thanks you very much!! See many videos but nothings like this!
You're welcome! Thanks for the support!
Best video ever
Dope vid. Got me to go through junk yards online and grab a cluster myself 😅 now in the process of doing this mod, thanks for the insight lmao
Awesome, glad I could help!!! 🤣
Hi, can you share the websites to look for this? I'm not familiar with any online junkyards [this is the first time i've heard of them]
@@KevinVo Hey Kevin, finally got the cluster installed and handshake procedure done. It would randomly throw CEL code U0155 for lost comms with cluster, did you have this issue?
@@johnowow were you able to resolve the issue?
@@prettyzooted6288 Yes. If I recall correctly, I emailed Gerald about it and he mentions this is expected and can be cleared by resetting the battery or with a scanner. It went away and does not come back
Community support is a wonderful thing....
Appreciate the support!
Great video!
Thanks!
Great video man! I will try this I think.
Highly recommend it!
Amazing Stuff
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I think i prefer the styling of the old cluster, i like the material-look background that covers all the gauges, but i prefer the way the rev meter takes up so much more space now - that dial is going to be moving a bit quicker
Love this
Me too!!
Damn Kevin, you're doing videos on all the mods I plan to xD
Great minds think alike 😉
Wow that’s nice
Good video
Thank you!!
Big time Dope 🚀
What's the part number for the 2017+ dash?? I have a 2017 base with the old style infotainment. I like the simplicity but want the gauge cluster screen
You see I wasn’t planning on changing the clusters until I saw that it shows how much range you have left and I always love seeing that. Now the problem is that I have an automatic so where you placed the button I already have a button there :( any other clever places you can think of placing?
You can really put the controls anywhere that you desire. Do you have a push to start? If so you can put the controls where the key start would be. Otherwise, you can also put the controls to the side of the cluster or where your fog light button would be.
@@KevinVo I saw one guy on reddit managed to retrofit the 17+ wheel on a 2013 brz and got the controls to work but he never said how he did it.
Can you do something similar to a video like this for the 15-17 STi with the Gauge Cluster and the center screen where the Boost Guage is from a 18+ STi.
I have a question. My 2016 frs has two buttons in the middle where the custom cluster kit goes and it has snow and sport. If I can't put it there. Where do I put it?
If I already have a 2020 brz with the digital display, do I need to program the car with the techstream cable? I just want the little dials because I have an aftermarket steering wheel and no way to control the cluster menu.
Also, are the pins on the connector behind the cluster the same on 2017+ models?
suuuper dope. i had always wondered if you could retrofit the steering wheel controls from 17+ to 13-16 models without the head unit, just to control music :P
Glad you enjoyed it! I am not entirely sure on the steering wheel controls controlling music without the new head unit though.
@@KevinVo another question I have a 14 frs automatic, this will work to on them?
I’ve done it. Changes out steering wheel and airbag and ran the wiring through the clock spring and into a swc module. SWC are analog negative ladder so most modules will take care of it
Pretty cool. looked alot easier then i was expecting. Now what would be super BA would be to have the new 2022 dash
Haha I doubt that one will work, but who knows?!
i have an issue with my brz not always starting right away when i press the button (no its not the battery in the key or my clutch/neutral switch either) was wondering if anyone knows if using the tech stream sofware would be able to help re calibrate/ figure out what's not communicating 100% in the immobilizer system?
hey, great video! wondering if i order the toggle switch, would i be able to just depin and repin the switch into my cluster? i just installed a steering wheel set up on my car, but would still like to retain the ability to control my cluster. any input would be great!
Yes, it should work the same!
@@KevinVo Thanks kevin! just ordered it. appreciate the help!
How is it able to show the oil temp info. Does that mean the Frs already has a factory oil temp sensor but just no way to get a reading from it.
I've got an '18 BRZ
There is only 1 g meter and it goes away while driving. Does the 86 cluster do the same?
Any way to make the tpms light work properly or does it constantly flash at ya?
Thanks for the reply on the previous comment Kevin!
I had one small doubt, I have the 2017 steering wheel without the right side switch (the one that controls the instrument cluster) since I got the basic version with the older model instrument cluster. Is there any way to maybe just get the right side switch panel (the 5 directional buttons with return function) and somehow wire it up to the instrument cluster through the clockspring? Please let me know if you have any info. Thank you! 🙏
I think you would need to buy the whole steering wheel button setup. I doubt they sell just one side.
@@KevinVo but will the clockspring harness support the wiring?
Will the tech stream mess up my tune if I use it? Car is tuned with ecutek
Hi, if I buy a 17+ steering wheel, will I be able to control with this cluster? If it does, does that mean I don’t need to install that little joystick control button? Thx.
Yes, you can either use the 17+ steering wheel controls or use the geraldjustprojects controller.
If the new cluster is backwards compatible, is it possible to install a gadget to pull up the oil temps, etc for the peeps that prefer the old school 7segment displays/fuel gauge, etc?
Yes, geraldjustprojects.com have a couple different gauge options.
Has anyone tried to fit the 2022 into a 2013+? I just checked the pins and the housing, and it looks to be a perfect fit and the connector is exactly the same as the 2013+ so it should be plug and play.
In case you wanted to match the buttons and trim to that black replacement button you can get oem black trim off of amayama just look up the part numbers
Yup, we sell those at FTspeed 😉
www.ftspeed.com/part/su003-02486-toyota-jdm-oem-black-mt-traction-control-buttons-2013-ft86#.Yae9GNDMKrw
Will this work on a 17+ base model? My car has the older cluster style.
Another thing, would it be possible to wire in a 2017+ steering wheel so the chip board isn't required?
Figured it might be an option, but probably not considering the steering wheel doesn't have any controls on it in the first place.
It’s possible, i’m in the process of making a tutorial. I already have a tutorial on how to put the head unit controls on the steering wheel if you don’t have them
Hey Kevin, I’m doing the swap soon. Picked up one from an auto 86 for my ‘14 frs 6spd. Although i have two keys for my car so would i have to do the handshake procedure twice with both keys?
No, should just need to do it once I believe.
thanks for the video. Take my Sub! I see your early gen frs has the bulge above the center vents too! lol
Quick question, is it possible to do it in reverse? idk I'm weird I like more of the analogue look of previous gen gauge
I mean, you could if you really wanted to haha
Question for anyone, my 2020 86 didn't come with the digital cluster so I've always wanted to switch it. It's a turn key car but my steering wheel has the controls, soooo would that automatically work then???
Also.. if it doesn't work and I have to go the traction route, my 86 has a traction off, a race traction off, and speed/snow buttons so all three are occupied... so am I out of luck then???
Does the wiring change based on location? For example I’m in Australia with a RHD 86
Is it the same wiring locations??
Thanks
mine is a LHD but damn thats a good question i never thought of that
I, honestly, couldn't tell you, but I couldn't imagine they changed the wiring.
Will you have to install aftermarket sensors to measure the oil temp and water temp?
No, the factory sensors are already there.
This it a great video iv wanted to do this since i got my frs but i was wondering If you could pair a 17 steering wheel with it instead of the little toggle switch?
Yes, you can run the 17 wheel and use the controls on that steering wheel instead.
@Kevin Vo that's great news! could you point me in the right direction for what you'd do for the wheel to work? Not trying to write 1000 questions in the comments lol
great Video! Where i can buy a digital cluster? And when i buy a facelift steering wheel with controls - then i don't need the extra controller, right?
Thank and i wish a good weekend from GER.
If you have the new steering wheel controls then you don't need the extra controller. As for where to acquire the digital cluster, I'm not sure how you can go about that in GER, but I used www.car-part.com/ to source one in USA from a junk yard.
@@KevinVo Thank you!:)
Will this work in a 2018 BRZ since it’s not a pre 17+?
You said the welcome screen can be changed from brz to 86 n vise-versa, can it be done on the 17+ cars that already have the clusters ?
Yes, you'll just need to send it to someone that is able to do it. I sent mine to geraldjustprojects.com
Hey Kevin. A small question on here. How could I get the techstream software, do you have a link I could download with? I am pretty new to this so I am lost, please do help a brother out!
The techstream software should come with the cable that you purchase through the link I provided.
Would really love to see an actual reliable install video on the easygo push button start function
Probably won't be going that route as it's very complicated and for my purposes not necessary.
How can I change the MPH to KM/H? and also it’s showing BRZ animation, could I change it to 86? And how?
I know you love your car
Absolutely love it!
Hey @KevinVo what is the part number for it? My toyota dealership is willing to help but they need the part number.
What models of the techstream i need for the programing? thanks
Hey Kevin, Great Vid - Just wondering if this swap retains the "hill hold" feature in the 17+ cars?
I believe the hill hold function is a feature stored in the 17+ VSC/ESP ECU, so swapping the instrument panel wouldn’t introduce that feature to this 13-16 FRS
It wouldn't add the feature if your car didn't already have it, unfortunately.
Ah got it, thank you so much for the reply guys!
You can swap the ABS controller from the 17+ models to get it.
ruclips.net/video/ysNTvaR1vRE/видео.html
In case we didn’t want/need to change the mileage or start logo, would we still have to send the cluster off to Gerald or could we skip that step.
Absolutely!
Could I reset the odometer this way?
@@user-white007 what do you mean reset?
@@KevinVo I think he's asking if the cluster will change its mileage to match the ecu in his car or if there is a further step to take. thats what I was wondering also. I want to do this, but I would want it to reflect my cars actual mileage so its not inaccurate.
If i change this out, will it say there is odometer rollback?
They got rid of that techstream cable you used. Is there any way you can update the link to the correct one to use now?
So this works for the 17+ BRZ Cluster too? I have a 2018 BRZ Key Turn
That is correct.
Ok I have a question if someone can help I have a 2013 base model 86 and it comes with the analogue cluster any chance this software will allow me to put in a cluster from same year with the digital speedo and white dial I really want to do this swap but am struggling to find information. Also could I use an auto cluster for my manual?
You should be able to retrofit it into your car.
i have one question if i can. Is it possible to change welcoming screen on facelift clusters ? i just have BRz facelift cluster on hand and i want to fit it in gt86
Yes, geraldjustprojects is able to change that if you send that in to him.
@@KevinVo but i am not from the states, i am from EU
Is it possible to fit the push start mechanics from the newer models to the 13 model?
Possible, but there is a lot of wiring to go along with it and I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it.
Would this work on the automatic transmission version as well?
Yes, they both utilize the same cluster.
To have the mileage reset to current miles do you have to send it in or can you change it with the tech stream?
You'd have to send it in to someone who can program it. I don't believe you can do it in techstream.
U think its fine if i pair the cluster with the techstream cable before i send it to get mileage programmed. Because i didnt wanna spend money to get it programmed then do the techstream to find out it doesnt work after the handshake.
Yes that should be fine.
I have techstrim but can’t connect it 2024 gt86
Is it possible to rerofit a 17+ steering into a pre-17 car?
Awesome! Oil temp readings work?
Yup, everything works as it should!
If I have a 2017 86, will I need to buy the joystick and wiring?
You'll either have to buy the joystick or buy the OEM steering wheel controls.
Is there an international shipper that sells the 2017+ cluster? My country doesn't seem to have any.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure, sorry!
Any hope for a new 86/BRZ LCD Cluster swap vid?
Unfortunately, it's not likely to work on the previous gen without some serious modification.
Now I want this video, but with the GR86 display, cause it shows TPMS for individual wheels instead of a dumb orange light!
Not sure the cluster would be compatible unfortunately.
Im def gonna do this if/when I can find a cluster. what do you do about the mileage difference?
You can send the cluster into GeraldJustProjects and he can reprogram the mileage for you.
@@KevinVo Do you just have to email him, I do not see any mention of that on his site.
@@stone6655 yes just email.
Can you do this in base 2013 models without the digital speedo or rev limiter beep stock etc?
Yes you can, it'll be the same process.
@@KevinVo quick question. I have my frs tuned with ecutek, when it comes to having to register the new key will my ecutek locked tune prevent it from syncing or interfere with the ecutek software?
So if I do get a 17+ 86 will it be plug and play and start right up?
I have the same question. Let me know if you’ve heard anything.
Hi Kevin. Would the old one be able to fit into the newer models (push to start) with no problems? (Sans steering wheel controls.)
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Shouldn't be any issues.
@@KevinVo @Gymnast562 Hi Kevin, I just did the swap myself, fitting an old cluster into my 2017 BRZ, and the CEL is on, got a permanent error code for lost communication to the instrumental cluster. Does it have to do with the fact that my car has a push to start, and old cluster was for a turn key one. Do you have any thoughts on that? Looking forward to hear from you, thank you!
@@scotttheawsome23 did you reprogram the cluster with techstream?
@@KevinVo will try that now, thanks
Does this work for the automatic version?
Does the oil temp gauge work too or do you have to do some more to it?
Yes everything works as it should.
do u need add the oil temp sensor to support the oil temp table?
No, the sensors are already their from the factory.
Well. Bought the one in your link done everything according to instructions installed cluster and went to do ECU communication I’d registration and it won’t do the handshake. Says unable to cross-check with the meter scu ecu.
Update: was able to reprogram my old gauge back to the car to get me going. Wasn’t able to pair new cluster sadly
Sorry to hear that this didn't work for you. What was the issue you were having?
@@KevinVo I had a custom cluster built so it wasn’t exactly like the 17+ model. Had a custom 13 model one with Bluetooth leds in the gauge but wouldn’t ever pair. Was able to use other useful things within the software though. Ended up just sending the guy the one out of my car to build instead.
Question Kev, do I download the program onto the laptop before hand or when it’s plugged into the car and laptop the program self initiates itself?
You'll need to download the program beforehand.
@@KevinVo Do you have a link or does it come with the cable pre installed?
@@JacobAlvey123the software comes with the cable.
@@KevinVo Thank you so much Kevin, I bought a 17+ cluster back in 2020 but never got around to it because there were no great tutorials besides threads. I also had a key car so this video helped out a lot and gave me confidence in doing it myself. Again ty.
@@KevinVo Hey Kevin, it’s not working when I connect the cable to my laptop… so how do I install the software beforehand? I uninstalled Firewall, and the other Windows protection service. But every time I plug in the cable nothing pops up. My cable came with a disk so do I have to use that to install the software?
if i have a push button start car already do i need to do the tekstream setup?
No, if you have push button start you don't have to program it with techstream.
What about the mileage of the car, does it transfer over too with the program or no?
The mileage does not automatically transfer over. You need to send it to someone to reprogram it to show the correct mileage.
Does anybody have a link to the diagram of the cluster connector? I need to find the speedo cable
Unfortunately, I do not. Sorry!
It's not available to buy on Amazon. Have they sold out?
I was looking to do it desperately but i have an auto and all the clusters i could find are from manual. Will it still work ?
Yes, it should still work. I believe my cluster is actually from an AT.
The transmission does not matter. What matter is the car is Push start or Turn key. If the car is push start, it is just a simple swap-and-go. If the car is turn key then you must do handshake procedure as seen on the video at 15:20.
what about the mileage? will the new cluster tell the mileage from the original old cluster i had previously?
You can send the cluster in to geraldjustprojects for him to program the mileage for you to match.
Is a fully digital display version available?
How do I get it the cluster reprogrammed to display my actual mileage? Do I have to contact him privately?
Yes, just send them an email.
I wanted to ask if it would be plug and play for my 2017 model and I do have steering wheel controls. My 2017 86 didn’t come with the LCD cluster.
Is your car push to start? If so, then yest it will be plug and play.
@@KevinVo It is not, still key ignition. But since I have SWC I won’t run into that first issue of having to install that extra wiring in order to control it right? I only need to program it at the end to get it to recognize that it’s the new cluster.
@@Denis_Vujic that is correct. You'll just need to get the techstream cable to program it.
@@KevinVo Hey Kevin, I bought these updated clusters for my 86, it was a BRZ cluster, however I’m trying to get the tech stream program to work it’s saying it can’t detect my ECU. Does it matter if my car has been tuned because I’m boosted and I don’t know if it’s because of that that’s causing me not to be able to program the cluster
I have a 2015 scion FRS will this wok using a 2018 speedometer cluster 85004CA530?

for my automatic would i need a gauge cluster from an auto?
Nope, doesn't matter as they use the same cluster.
