Thank you so much for making that 2nd video, I learned a lot more, as to visualizing from distance as to either being early/ late, using the left cone as a reference point, and backing up slow while making small coorections. I am ok, doing straight line and Offset, but I haven't done any Alley parking in school yet. I will be applying what I have learn from you in Parallel and Alley when I return to school on April, 18th . Sadly its only 4 days prior to my MVC's test date in Jersey. Thanks a million again, and thank you for making and deticating this video for me . You made me your biggest fan for life, hands down your instructional videos are the best on utube, and I watched all of what utube has, because you go the extra mile . God Bless.

Thank you for simplifying this maneuver and I appreciate your student's efforts in being patient as well. That small initial cut is vital to help with steering the trailer and going in too deep can make the trailer be way too early. One of my instructors is from MD and said "less is more". I appreciate instructors who help others with patience and simplicity. Keep the efforts going and stay blessed! HALLELUYAH!

I'm in trucking school now & I have the straight back & offset with no problem. I did the alley dock last Thursday 2 times by myself. For some reason I can't get it now!! It's so frustrating & with the trailer being 28ft it responds faster. Gonna keep on till I get it again so I can go on the road so I can take my test

    • @truckerstevecdlinstructor
      @truckerstevecdlinstructor  2 года назад +2

Hope you pass your test... Learn to read the trailer. 28 foot trailer moves fast so as you back up , GO SLOW! Go to the dock- Find your reference point. If the trailer is starting to go to the left of your reference point ( early ) Stop it be turning the steering wheel to the left. Don't over steer - if the trailer is reacting, you have enough turn. Practice over and over again until it CLICKS in your head! The trailer only goes where you let it go.

When ya dealin with a shorter trailer, while in reverse, ya wanta turn wheel in small increments. This will create a much safer backing practice. When in reverse, a 28' trlr takes between 4-5' to start changing direction. A 48-53' will cover 8' before beginning to change direction.

+Trucker Steve so this is interesting, in my school the way my instructor is doing it, is having me turn opposite of where we are backing the trailer into, but from over my shoulder the trailer is like almost jackknifed, like it looks 90% and then we turn all the way to other side and start backing up again. I keep watching videos on alley dock and no one seems to be doing the first reverse turn to where it's almost jackknifing.

Will be doing another video on alley dock ASAP. Backing into the alley, ( on the right ) starting with a left- backing up unit the trailer is about 45 degree angle. Steer wheels straight. Now you will back up slowly and answer the question. Is the trailer late - on time - or early. Now it’s up to you to make the proper adjustments when needed to back the trailer into the alley. Take time to go to a truck terminal. See the movement of the trailers into the docks. Also see my playlist. Advance Backing by Shelton. Click onto my homepage or playlist.

Failed my test 2 times because of this. I retest again this week and hoping third times a charm. Testing in a double axle day cab with a 53’ trailer my issue seems to be coming in too late and trying to force it in the box so my question is if I’m too late, near the blindside is it better to pull forward and make it a straight line back or should I pull up back to starting position and try to be on time? Sometimes when I pull up I get the trailer crooked and the setup is bad. Thanks.

If you are at the point of no return, keep going learn or know what the point of no return is. You can stop any tractor trailer in 8 or 9 gears. If you are way back down shifting to slow down. Yes they move faster and many students who oversteer with a 48" trailer will jack knife with a 28' trailer. We try to train students to REACT to the trailer. If you need to stop a trailer from moving to the left, turn the steering wheel to the left to stop the left movement. @@burakkozlu377 If your tester is certified in Maryland, there is no alley dock. If he taking you to the Fredrick MVA, they may be doing the new skill test. I will have it on my site ASAP. Where will you be taking your test? I have seen United CDL School trailers at the Fredrick MVA.

That is the KEY word. PRACTICE! After 35 to 40 times backing into the alley, you should be ok. Each range day, 8 alley dock if possible

A 90° back is extremely harsh on equipment & has numerous blind spots. A 45° is far safer & gives a driver more upto date info about achieving a successful back. 90° backs usually endup with another driver loosing a hood, especially considering that most drivers today are either
    1. To damn lazy to get out & look
    2. To damn fat to climb in/out multiple times
    3. To damn stupid to have a license
    4. Can't read or understand ENGLISH
    5. ALL THE ABOVE

Being honest & being real. 2 important factors in this industry. It aint perfect, it aint easy. It takes a special breed to meet this job head on & put up with it very demanding field. Stressful to say the least at times. Those who thrive in stressful & sometimes chaotic situations will adapt. They will overcome. They are the breed that this industry demands. Those are the drivers that succeed & weather the numerous storms (aka changes), & comeout even better than what they were when they first began.
Learning is the most important factor of all. Dont ever quit learnin. Especially when tackling mountains. Whatever gear ya climb the mountain in, drop down 1 gear before the descent. Pay attention to signs. My mom & dad always told me "SPEED MATTERS, if ya come down slow, ya can do it over & over again. Come down fast & that might be your 1 & only chance".
22yrs in this industry as a driver with a lifelong commitment thanks to being a 3rd generation. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Every mornin that our father in heaven allows me to look thru that windshield, is a completely blessed day. The best paintings in the world, are done by the hand of the father & seen thru a windshield by a truckdriver

Backing is the driver reacting to the trailer. If the trailer is heading to the left and you want to stop this movement, you react by steering to the LEFT. This will move the trailer to the RIGHT. Once again, you control how far you want the trailer to go to the right. Once again, stop the movement by steering to the Right. How is your straight line backing? Off-set What state are you being trained in.? Go to my playlist and view videos on backing. Click onto playlist.
