At about 3 mins, the kill switch pictures were not very clear to me but once off the machine I saw there is a 'ramp' on the brake mechanism and the 'switch' has a bent end which is supposed to ride up the 'ramp' to make a connection. Releasing the brake breaks the connection. Once I understood this, a good cleanup of the touching surfaces and a very slight adjustment to the 'bent end' brought instant success. To think of all the wasted time checking the plug, coil and connecting wire! Oh dear but thanks for the inspiration to have a go. BP

Good info, I have a starting problem that started when I broke the kill switch cable. I believe this may be my problem. The video helped me but it needs to be a clear picture, it was a little blurry.
I took a look after scratching my head for weeks, not wanting to take it to the repair
shop .. and sure enough it was the break and that wire that wraps around... Thank You So Much for Posting!

I got an older mower i think where a green wire goes under the flywheel. Touch the cable stop or ground the green wire should stop it but its not. What does it attach to under the flywheel?

hello, very nice video. I own a briggs stratton mower and it was working fine, half way while i was doing the lawn I started the engine but now when I hold the throtte to start mowing the engine is at full speed and it very hard to control it, if i tried to leave idle it will stop but at full speed its not only dangerous but also hard since it vibrates a lot. any suggestion on hot to fix this??? thanks in advance

You are the man!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, WATCHING THIS VIDEO MAKE ME REALIZE THAT MY KILL SWITCH WAS ALWAYS ENGAGED SO THE CIRCUIT WAS ALWAYS TO GROUND!!! FUC**** YEAH!!!!! I NEVER REALIZE THATH The handle mechanism when you move the lever, the little blade never disenngages ground!!!! I remove the wire from the switch and there you go ! STARTS AGAIN!!!!!! THIS WAS DRIVEN ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I check everyting, thousand times but never the kill mechanism. SO BASIC CHECK!!!! I even change the coil and the spark. Thankssssssssssssss!!!!!!!

Hi, my briggs and stratton mower the same as the one in this video, used to start first pull from cold after 3 primes, but now it does not fire at all after 3 primes first pull, but starts after 2nd pull ? this problem started after i changed the oil, it was the proper oil B&S sa30 after tilting to get underneath to remove plug, but i didn't run mower to heat oil before draining old oil, could that be the problem ? any suggestions please ? i put on a new carb diaphram and gasket. thanks Bruce

hello, i have the same engine as you do....and i have a big problm and i do not what to do...i am repairing an old lawn mower and it was ok , when i start the engine, motor is running perfectly and after stopping it by killswitch, want to start again....maby, perhaps i have a wrong ignition timing and spark apears in the wrong time and motor almost explode... how come and what is happening ...please help me
So this works because you are removing the fixed ground from the block and relocating it to a ground on the handle to a intermittent ground right? I have a Troy bilt mower I am wanting to do this with and still learning how to work on small engines

Hi, my 3.5 hp briggs and stratton with pulsa primer, when it starts white smoke comes out of exhaust but stops after about 5 seconds ? could this be i need to replace the piston rings ? also it seems to have lost a bit of power ? it is 9 years old and has never had head and inside de carbonised ? would this help power if i de carbonised head ? FUCKING FINALLY. I typed “self propelled wiring diagram” 3 hours ago, nothing but riding mowers
Question? Have a kgro 4.0 hp push mower by k-mart with no spark. Replace the coil and plug still no spark. Shave the rust from the flywheel and again still no spark. I even disconnected the kill switch from the coil itself with still no spark. Any suggestions!🙄

I don't know about the kill swtch but today Jack and I fixed the throttle cable. It no longer worked. Jack cut throttle cable and replaced it with an 8 inch cable. Hé shifted throttle plate to 3000 rpms with an 8 inch cable...screwed it tight and it runs perfectly. He overrode throttle cable entirely. Infact we just cut it away. I was not convinced! Just jerryrigged whole throttle assembly. It purres. Amazing. He can just look at a small engines and figure out a fix.
I never thought about that fix. Couldn't have dreamed about it. I just have to rake his leaves and winterize his yard as trade.He does brainwork. FIXES my old lawnmowers. All trade no money.
He is a genius on 4 cycle engines. It took us 2 hours to figure out a fix. I was flummoxed. We froze, but he pontificated it with coffee and cigarettes and he figured it out. Amazing!!!

Mower Man, thanks for the reply. My neighbour left me a mower when he moved house, very poor state. Compression was good but started for a very short time, pull cord ripped out of my hand first, backfired and died.
I removed all the coverings learned from your videos. I had seen some videos on removing the flywheel without using a puller, I replaced the key, tightened down the flywheel. The engine run for approx 1 min made a clattering noise and stopped again.
Mick Humpage what mower was it? If it has valves that you can set like ohc it could be that. Take a look on my channel at the honda videos on how to set valves
My engine fires up after priming then cuts out after the fuel has burned. The carbs clean as a whistle and it's new fuel. Can anyone help please.

What if the lawnmower over speeds? I have checked and replaced the springs under the air filter, but that didn't make any difference.

Hey Mower Man! I recently purchased a 22-inch self-propelled mower with a 4.5 Briggs and Stratton engine like the one in this video. My bale bar was extremely sticky and the mower doesn't shut off when it is released. Although the mower starts and runs (stuck on lowest idle, will replace throttle cable soon), I removed the small kill switch that you said could be removed with a flathead in the video. However, I was wondering if the small plastic piece can be reinstalled? After re-installing it, my mower doesn't seem to start.
It could be that the wire doesn't pull tense enough to allow the mower to start? Any suggestions? Should I disassemble and install it again, or do I need a new switch?

Change the plug first and check the ignition coil wire isn't split. It's rarely the kill switch.

@@MowerMan checked f7rtc spark plug for ferrex 18" 141 cc lawn mower was showing 18.78 ohm resistance when set at 20k on multimeter

Just want to say thank you for giving me the idea of the kill switch I have a my son's friend grandmother's 2007 150z snapper zero turn. With a 20hp Briggs & stratton it's got spark to the wire I sprayed starting fluid in the breather erea but still not want to run any more tips besides the kill switch. ?

I just checked the compression with a tester no compression now my lawnmower quit on me 😞 I'm on a low SSI check each month barely can afford gas to take my wife to chemo treatment 4 times a month we're in our late 50s she has to take chemo treatments for the rest of her life her chemo therapy is 2hr drive one way 😞... Is there any tricks for no compression on this 502cc 20hp briggs & stratton 2007 model ? 😞

Help i tried everything... new spark plug ...new coil... lawnboy turn on when kill switch is not installed. But i cleaned and messed around with the kill switch manualy and still doesnt make a spark. Also checked coil gap im at a lost
Your coil is good it is your switch
@@bloodbrotherinjesus9906 fixed it. There was a green wire plugged into a y connection linked to the kil( switch. I disconnected the green wire and now everything works normal. The kill switch was fine
