Thank you for this very clear & helpful video. I am a 67 year old female retiree & was able to repair my 98 year old mother's serging mower myself!!! Thank you, thank you!

Did the trick! My mower had a new carb fitted last year by the "service agent" - about 3 weeks and 4 cuts ago it stopped working properly. They'd made a mess of the gasket and diaphragm when fitting - followed your clear instructions, mower immediately sprang into life sounding healthy again. Thanks!

Yup! and I had water in the Carburetor just like you said in another video clip. I got my lawnmower up and running again. thank you. as a woman that is not ordinarily involved in mechanical projects ~ you saved the day for me. Your videos are very easy to entreat. I am most grateful. I recommended you to others on my facebook profile. Thanks.

Hi. A big thank you. I was about to scrap my old mower but thought it worth £2 to try a new gasket and diaphragm. When I followed your excellent instructions I found the diaphragm was perforated. Now my old mower runs perfectly and you have saved me a lot of money. Thank you for bothering to share your expertise.

Thank you very much for this video! After ten years my mower gave difficulties (problems with starting and priming, motor didn't run smoothly but very irregularly, consumed a lot of fuel and blowed an immense smell of fuel in my face whilst running behind the machine. I was thinking about buying a new one, until I've found this video. After a thorough cleaning from the fuel tank and the carburator, using a cheap product from Wibra (Dutch & Belgian) and replacing the diaphragm and gasket, which costed me only 4 euro (+ delivery cost) problems seemed to be solved! Thank you very much for this very clear and useful tutorial!

Well done!! I've watched several videos where I was told how to do the very same things, but the presentation was so poorly done I wasn't sure if it was correct. Your video makes everything "crystal clear" and instilled a high degree of confidence in doing this repair. Thank you.

    Good video.
The reason some people install the air filter the other way around as mentioned at 07:00 is because on some Briggs & Stratton engine models there is very little clearance between the "V" shape on the filter case and the engine blower housing, making it somewhat of a pain to install it without first removing the blower housing itself, at least partially. But yes, the correct orientation is flat side to the front.

Thank you for the video. I feel that 400,000+ people have had to do this which means there is an inherent flaw in the design. Briggs and Stratton should be held accountable in some fashion. My mower has less than 200 hours and eventually would not stay running. I have been in and out of the automotive repair industry over the years and have experience with many types of engines. After replacing the carb diaphragm and gasket, the mower ran great for about 20 minutes (about long enough to mow my front yard which is 20 yards x 20 yards.
    Notes:
    - Tank was emptied and filled with new gas
    - New Spark Plug
    - New filter
    - mower deck cleaned top and bottom of all debris
    - carb and mating surface on gas-tank cleaned spotless
    - new oil
    - verified compression
    - starts only when primed
    - primer bulb has small hole on the face

    • @williamlowery734
      @williamlowery734 5 лет назад

The problem is not in the design. The problem is in leaving the had setting in the mower. The ethanol which is alcohol breaks down the gasket and makes out lose suction from tank. If you let your mower or other gas tools run till they are out off gas it will eliminate the issue and will be ready the next spring to start right up after adding gas

Thanks. Same thing - some water in the well where the screen sits. Whatever that's for. I had an O-ring and bushing fall out of the port behind the butterfly valve port where it mates with the engine when I removed the assembly. O-ring goes in first. Mine is the same engine but it's used on a pressure washer.

You should pry out the Main jet and Emulsion tube and clean the holes. There is a tiny flat spot on top of the Jet that you can carefully pry the plastic part secured by a tiny O ring. Reinstall Flush. It snaps in. There are 3 small holes in the tube barrel.

I replaced diaphragm and gasket and the lawnmower would not start. I sprayed the carburetor screws and gasket area with silicone spray; IT STARTED and has been running great for a few months now. A suggestion is before you replaced gasket and diaphragm on a a lawnmower that does not run or lopes is to spray with silicone spray. I think the silicone spray sealed the very small air gaps around carburetor gaskets.

mogbaba I Did the same with my Briggs engine. When the primer does not suck gasoline in to the carb. that is the problem that diaphragm is faulty, or it has torn, or been wet or a tiny hole might be the reason.. I hope that gave you a picture why he replaced the parts..

One other thing to check when a mower only runs from the primer fuel, if this does not work for you.
I had removed my engine from the frame while repainting it. When I put the engine back on, I was unable to pull the rope, because it was hydro-locked with oil in the cylinder. I removed the spark plug and pulled the rope, blowing the oil out.
I had a problem with the engine running longer than what the primer pumped into the carburetor. I replaced the diaphragm thinking that was the problem, even though it ran just fine previously, and still had the problem. After reworking it several times, I checked the oil and it was milky looking, and smelled of gas. I drained all the oil out, and it was gray. I added new oil and the mower then started. It took a bit for it to work out the contaminated oil, but that's the only other thing I did to make it work. If gas gets into the oil it can destroy the engine. Check the oil.

Thanks for the video, I fitted new diaphragm and gasket to my B&S and it's now purring again, it's getting on for 20 years old and the deck rusted away and was rebuilt in wood! The throttle linkage managed to dislocate to the left side of the intake pipe on dismantling which had me confused at first but a re-check on the video showed me where it should be. I seem to be missing the secondary spring on the throttle butterfly - but hey ho it works. What is the mechanism that you can click into a different position to the right of the prime button? I lost the manual years ago.

I installed a new carb and it ran great for a couple months then today went to mow the grass and it wouldn't prime. I found behind the primer bulb some parts. A tiny spring a steel ball and a plug like thing. I got it back in the hole it fell out of now it primes and runs again. I doubt it will stay in place and will fall apart again. The plug think is rubber and used a toothpick to put the parts back in the hole, hard to see so small.

Thanks for creating this great video. Sadly though, after carefully installing the new diaphragm and gasket, I'm leaking fuel from what looks like the very seal I've replaced; I've removed the carb, checked and reinstalled and it's still leaking? I'm wondering if removing a old (20yrs!) carburetor could have resulted in it losing shape and hence the leak?

On reviews placed on amazon for same/similar diaphragm issuessome took and reused old gasket + new gasket (as replacement was not thick enough) I have not done mine yet - but is a aftermarket one ( so either will use 'make a gasket' in a tube - along with gasket .....or both gaskets (tho worry about that causing issues)
