I have an older B&S Toro. With a 5/16 nut-driver, remove the air cleaner cover. Behind that there are 3 more 5/16 screws remove them. This allows you to remove the housing that holds the plunger. With a small screw driver remove the plunger and the new one. reassemble.
Thanks Jeff-very helpful. I saw on another video where they took a 17mm socket and placed on the bulb and ring when reinserting. Looked helpful to snap back in with minimal risk to damaging the bulb.
Thank you ,Jeff. Your methods for repairing mowers are good. I cleaned out the carb. Bowl and jets and added new fuel. It runs like brand new. Thank you
Damn I do feel for ya.... I worked in Biloxi for a few months for the Deep Water Horizon oil spill cleanup efforts. It was hottest I have ever been in my life...but I loved my time there anyway.
Thanks for showing that. My primer bulb was okay, but I needed to see how it came apart. Mine had a little screen behind it that I ended up removing after I cleaned and reinstalled the entire assembly with little response from the primer. I also noticed that the gasket wasn't making a real good seal, so I thoroughly cleaned it and snugged up the screws real good. The combination got it working again. Any idea what that little metal tab you bent is for?
Many tries but a little detective work and FINALLY got it fixed. I didn't realize the bracket in the upper right behind the back of the the air cleaner housing was too far out so I bent it back. It was supposed to take the third screw. It had prevented a tight seal for the gaskets on the air cleaner housing. I bent it back with pliers and a hammer and since it is not really needed I am not using it. It took three days of puttering around and replacing parts before the light dawned on me! Primer and mower work fine now.
I have this engine in my mower, after a whole winter, needs no primeing, gas at idle, and you just pull gentley, with 2 fingers, the pull start to the end. Allways starts first try. No revving, no smoke, no noise. Just a nice gentle start. Im not saying this because its american. Im europian, and i hate american stuff. But this engine is just mental. So easy to start
I picked Up a used Murray 22-inch for $25 at a yard sale 5 years ago. other than a Carburetor kit, this little Engin starts Year After Year on ONE PULL. It's Fantastic.
Excellent video. Thank you for doing. The only thing I found was that the bottom of the bulb would not seat. So rubbed the bottom of the bulb with motor oil just to make it slick so it would seat.
did the replacement bulb nipple have a hole, is it supposed to? Mine had a hole and I was thinking of replacing it because my briggs an stratton will not ever turn over
It help to use a small amount of lube just inside the lip of the primer bulb so it slip all the way on its seat . I find a deep well socket that’s just slightly smaller in diameter than the primer bulb housing works to drive it in.
Thank you so much for the video, now I only have to find the right primer bulb for my mower not having much luck searching for it. I don't know which one to buy.
I took my mower out the mow today, filled the tank and the fuel was coming out through the hole in the tip of the bulb and looked as it was also coming out around the bulb. Is that just a simple bulb replacement as well or is something else not right there?
That’s most likely the needle and seat valve in the carburetor. Look up ‘needle and seat replacement Briggs quantum’ or something like that and you should find a video. Parts about 5 bucks.
Found the primer bulb on Amazon with the plastic collar. There are two. One is for pulsating carburetor? How can I tell which I have? Its 6.5 hp Briggs Straton
Yes. Slip the right sized socket over the new bulb and clip ring, line up the tabs to the mounting holes and push the ring in until it snaps. There is a briggs primer bulb install and a removal tool you can buy but their pricey.
Update: the carb was the beginning issue, how ever after cleaning and putting it back togeather and back on, I neglected to put the spring that connects to the little metal arm that hooks to the top of the carb which controls the butterfly, so yes a stupid little spring has been the bane of my exhistance, at any rate it is now running better than it was when it was new after the carb cleaning, thank you again sir for your assistance.
Sounds like the carbureotr is flooding. Needs to be cleaned and or rebuilt. I remeber you M Gomez. You have supported me and watched my videos for a long time, thank you.
Jeff wonder if you can answer this question I have a 4 stroke culltavitor. Replace the bulb it ran good then this year I took out all the old gas replaced gas filter clean tank out replaced fresh gas and now I pump the bulb can't see any new gas coming into the lines There is fuel line with filters and other line just suspended in the tank that connects to carb Do you have to re prime the lines I see no gas entering when I press the bulb
What is the torque for the backer plate to Carburator on these type engines? I have had to put two gaskets on a lot of these so they will prime because the back plate has been over tightened.
i have the same mower runs fine but primer doesnt work so it always needs starting fluid to get it going. bulb is in good shape, all passages inside carb seem clear, replaced gasket on the plastic cover but nothing. any suggestions?
I own 2 lawnmowers with that same type of Briggs and Stratton engine which I've cleaned the carburetors on but they still surge and the primer bulb draws very little fuel up through the main jet unlike your mower. How do I fix that so the primer bulb draws more fuel up through the main jet like it does on your Snapper?
I have the same problem...primer bulb won't draw fuel + primer bulb, gasket behind the air filter holder and the o-ring behind the carburetor are new/okay. Did you find a solution?
Replacing the primer bulb didn't fix my concern at all (not Jeff's fault; I'm only sharing this story in case others are going through what I was going through). It turns out it was the air cleaner base gasket that was not sealing the primer bulb air passageway fully. So the primer bulb was pushing air right out into the atmosphere. Here's what I had to do: take off the whole filter/primer base from the mower. Clean it. Get a new clean gasket. Carefully apply RTV sealant on the edges of the air passageway that are supposed to be sealed by the gasket. Don't put a whole bead of sealant like you are sealing a transmission. Use your finger and put a very light amount on. You don't want to plug up the passageway. The passageway I am talking about is shaped like a lazy "L" Then put the gasket on and make sure to press it down tight around all of the mounting pins. Then seal up the edges around the bottom outside of the gasket (near the lazy L passageway) with RTV sealant. This is the only way I could get the seal to take, otherwise I could never get any gas when pressing the primer bulb. I put the primer base back on the mower while the sealant was still a little wet and tightened everything down and let it sit overnight. The problem is fixed 100% now and the mower starts up on the first pull. So Jeff, do you and Taryl know each other? Are you friends? Are you enemies (just kidding)? Thanks for the videos and have a great day!
@@JeffsLittleEngineService u said it there let sleeping dogs lie its crazy how just a slight imperfection to the mating surface and crap ! no mo prime!

I have a lawnmower with that type of engine. The primer works with 2 gaskets behind the air filter holder but the engine surges a little and can be hard to restart sometimes. What is causing that?
I already thoroughly cleaned the fuel tank, fuel filter screen and carburetor. Is there anything else I can do? I used carburetor cleaner on both. I'm wondering if the valves need to be reseated?
When I remove the cylinder head half of the head gasket sticks to the head and the other half sticks to the engine. Do I need to replace the head gasket?
