Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

i realize I am pretty randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Stefan Cade Try FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)

I cannot thank you enough for your demonstration on replacing a primer bulb. My bulb on my Briggs/Stratton motor cracked at the end of last summer. With summer on us now and after borrowing my neighbor's mower for my first mowing, I have been dreading buying a new mower. I'm thankful I checked on here first! I'm going out today to get a new bulb and should have it replaced in a very short time, thanks to you! I've installed electrical lighting, built my own deck with a roof, but have never worked on engines (other than replacing spark plugs and changing oil). Now instead of a new mower, I hope to get another 7 years out of the one I have, which still runs great! THANKS AGAIN! Women....Do It Yourself!!!!
I got my mower out this morning. I pressed the primerbulb and discovered that the high temperatures we've been having had an adverse effect on the bulb. It has melted! But after finding your lesson on replacing, I think I can do it. Thank you. You are a good teacher.
Thank you so much It works perfect
If some one doesn’t have the 17 mm socket they can use a Pepsi bottle just take off the top and use the bottle mouth like a socket that’s what I did and it worked perfect
I can't believe I found this video on RUclips. This is exactly the job I've been trying to do. Part number too. I wish you had videos on everything because you are concise, to the point, and with great sound quality. Thank you.
you're welcome, make sure you are subscribed
donyboy73 thanks for taking the time
Thank you ! The 17mm socket idea saved my day. I tried making my own version of the rather expensive Briggs & Stratton primer bulb tool, but it just wasn't happening. Couldn't find a 17mm socket but my 3/4" one worked just as well.
As usual Dony boy you are the doctor of mower fixology thanks for the tutorial I'll be back again someday...
Your vids are the best around. Clear, articulate, to the point but with the necessary detail. 10/10
Thank You again ! I say again because this is the second time you've help me avoid the mower repair shop. Your videos are the BEST !
+sweetbrandigirl thanks!
Good job Dony. Having just done this with your help, I’ll clarify that when pushing in the plastic clips to remove the bulb, you should really push on the part of the clip further away from the carb, as that’s where the little lug that holds the clip into the outer body is.
Your guidance was very helpful for me to complete a successful bulb replacement. Thanks from Melbourne, Australia.
Thank you, sir! I have a Briggs & Stratton 3.75 HP Sprint engine on my Montgomery Ward lawnmower and wanted to do this myself as my old primer bulb had failed. Your video made the repair easy. Thank you again!
Thanks, I tried your instructions and WoW, guess what it worked. never would have known it was that easy. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks
Exactly what the doctor ordered. Thanks.
Mine has a small filter screen behind the bulb which took me more time to clean and get back in place than it did to replace the primer bulb. Thanks again.
The deep 17 mm socket tip was fantastic. When I tried installing it by hand the bulb would not stay seated. Thank you!!
Still useful, 11 years later. Thanks for taking the time to upload this.
You bet!
You did an excellent job explaining this...I loved how you showed each step and took your time...I wish you lived in my neighborhood! 😊. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video! God Bless you!
Good job of explaining and demonstrating how to do that. You were direct and not too talkative but explained it well and the video was terrific. Thanks
Very many thanks an excellent clear video. I have since replaced the priming bulb as you demonstrated, very easy thanks to you. One point, after I installed the bulb she would still not pump fuel. I found if you fill the fuel tank to the top, then lift the mower slightly at the carb side while still pumping the primer bulb, this will purge any air lock.
Thanks for this comment. It helped me out.
Perfect!!! The socket trick was terrific! For the first time in YEARS I can start my mower without having to remove the air cleaner and dribble in some gas. I put a little Vaseline on the bulb before insertion and it practically self installed,...with the help of the 17mm deep well socket.
yes, on the socket tip
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!!!!! U are the BOMB!! The people st the Home Depot acted like they had no clue what i was talking about nd didnt help at all. I hope i put it on right, but its working so im happy and so is my lawn!!!! Thanks again!
Thanks for the video! a $5 part instead of a $100 repair shop! Had a hard time getting it out but once it was out it was smooth sailing. Used a 3/4" to get it back in.
Cheers for making the video donyboy.
Just changed the primer on my mower.
Your video was invaluable. The socket tip was absolute quality.
Cheers 🍻
Thanks to Donyboy73, I have fixed all my small engine problems!!!!! Thank you!
thanks so much! i really did want to take off the carb./or bring to the shop. Now
this girl can do all by herself, thanks again for saving me alot of money.
i got the part the other day, and just replaced it with a new primer bulb, and my problem is now fixed! now i gotta find out how to fix a pull string on my other mower bc i broke the other one last week lol, thanks for the video :)
Your videos are great. I'm learning a lot from you since opening my small engine repair shop. One thing I learned quickly was, DON'T BUY AFTERMARKET KNOCKOFF PRIMER BULBS. They are crap! This is one part you really need to buy OEM. Lesson learned.
MY B&S engine is on a Craftsman pressure washer, but it's the same. Great instructions, just what I was looking for. And looking is the KEY, when it comes to RUclips. The previous "instructions" told me I needed to take the entire carb apart, when all I need to do is what you have very clearly shown and described. I got my washer replacement bulb from PartsTree, Part Number 694394
Thanks from the uk for not taking hours to explain like most American videos
You make it look sooo.....easy. Wish it would have been that easy for me.
A good pointer for me and I have learned something new.
You make AWESOME VIDEOS. You are thorough easy to understand have good shots and a steady camera.Thankyou Thankyou
I did exactly what you said to do in your video and it did job perfectly and I'm a woman! Thank you so much.
Linda Peery go girl 🥇
@@sweetvuvuzela4634 I make a mean casserole and I'm a man! 😜
This is an outstanding instructional video, very thorough and easy-to-follow. Bravo!
Thanks for this video. Not sure how old my Classic is (more than 10 years at least) and the bulb was disintegrating. Thanks to your video, I did it myself very quickly. Great tip with the 17mm socket...
Spot on information, I have just change it without any problems, exactly how you said, thankyou very much, excellent video.
Thank you!!! I had a modern BS with a torn Primer, and an older 3.75hp BS with a Primer in decent condition. I used your video to swap the Primers out and the newer BS works like a champ.
I now feel like a mechanic, lol. My father-inlaw will be so proud of me.
Thank you very much for posting this. I need to replace mine and was not sure how since I have never done one like this. You are a good man for helping us out.
Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how its done! I had no problem replacing it and back to making my lawn look wonderful and my lawn mower runs fantastic.
Todd
Man you are a great teacher, I love your videos, you are so easy to understand. thanks
Man, I thought the winter had KILLED my lawn mower. And to make matters worse the primer bulb wouldn't even pop back out. Auto Zone sells these for $4.99, and YOU my friend, saved me a good sum. 5 pumps and the thing started right up; I put some premium in it and now have the first cut yard of the season. Thanks again.
Wow! Thank you so much. Great video. Just exactly what I was looking for. The "secret" spring clip. Had no idea it was even there. I was wondering why they would make it so hard just to replace this little bulb. My 4HP "Quatro" B&S has the same carb, with red ring but mine was so dirty, the spring clip slot was impossible to find. That's very kind of you to share your knowledge and experience. Thank you
Thank you for the tip on using a socket. I didn't have a 17mm, but an 11/16ths did the trick. Last time I tried this (without using a socket) I punctured the bulb, and priming was guesswork as a result.
Great stuff, took all the guesswork out of it. Super tip with the socket. My bulb was eaten by mice in the shed so i have left the 17mm socket covering the bulb for winter protection.
Thanks very much for this informative video. My son has just asked me to look at his mower because the primer bulb is pushed in and doesn't return out. I'll give it a go using your video as a guide. Thanks again.
Went like a charm. The bulb wasn't cracked but very stiff; will replace it as soon as I can get a new one. Returned the old bulb until then. Mower goes fine. Thank you again.
You are a smart man! Thank you, your info on replacing a primer bulb was very helpful and informative to me. Thank you again.
Thanks. I ripped the cracked primer bulb trying to pull it our. Did not know about the clips. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks for the help, I change my bulb easy enough, but it still won't run. I noticed that there is a check ball in the carburetor, and I think that it fell out of mine. So your video helped in more ways than one.
I just changed my first primer bulb!!Thank you so much for the guidance. Excellent tutorial!
When I re install these I usually use a screw driver to push the clip in to place. Cool video man thumbs up !
Thanks for this video. I followed your instructions to replace my torn rubber bulb. Only trouble I had was the removal of the clip. In doing so I slightly mangled the inner ring. :( Now that it's all assembled again with a new clip & bulb the fuel doesn't fill inside when I pump it. Therefore starting it without a nice dose of primer is tough. Also, when the tank gets to approx half full the mower stalls out. Now I need to keep it at least half or 2/3 full to keep it running. I brought the mower for only 5 bucks at a yard sale 5 years ago (i.e. the replacement bulb cost me more than the whole mower) - so if I've damaged it beyond simple and inexpensive repair, then I might have to start searching for a replacement mower soon.
Thanks for the quick tip. Broke the thing as I tried to remove the ring, but that doesn't matter since you get a new ring with the bulb.
Thanks for the video on how to do this. The tip about the 17mm socket is especially useful. Job done in 10 minutes :)
Many thanks. (The mice ate my bulb.) 17mm socket is a great tip - touch of genius!!
Very clear and easy to understand. Thanks!
I'm pretty stunned to see this has almost 600k views, kudos!
Excellent demonstration. Thank you so very much!
Excellent videos donyboy73. Clear, concise and very useful. Love the accent too. Its like watching a episode of Fargo. (Greetings from Australia)
thanks
This worked perfectly. Thank you so much for your videos. They are very helpful. And very well done.
great, simple explanation. Thank you
thanks for posting! those clips are not as easy to get out as it looks but I did get them out, could you post a video explaining the difference between diaphram and old carbs please and the difference in how they work! thanks
Perfect! . same engine and primer bulb ... Got mine ordered just now .. Thanks!
Thank you for the info and the post, it worked like a champ even after being posted 12ys. 👍💯🙂
donyboy73. I recently installed a complete replacement fuel tank & carburetor for a 10T802 Briggs & Stratton engine in a futile attempt to put my sisters lawn mower back into service. Unknown to my sister; Someone from a neighboring apartment borrowed her mower and got a lot of foreign material into the OEM gas tank carburetor in which the engine ran very poorly and absolutely drank fuel in which pretty much killed the spark plug as well. The new gas tank/carburetor was purchased off of eBay in which I subsequently made adjustments to the new tank/carburetor to match the OEM required hook-up,Etc. Initially after the first start up as well as my sister using the mower for the first time - The engine ran great and was surprisingly enough very fuel efficient. So my sister actually ran the engine until the fuel tank was empty.
This morning I loaded up the mower and headed to my sisters residence in which we unloaded the mower and checked the motor oil and filled the fuel tank. So when my sister tried to prime the carburetor- There was absolutely nothing happening when the primer bulb was pushed in. So I unscrewed the breather screw and removed the breather assembly and poured a few drops of gas into the carburetor. The engine started up immediately and ran great and so I reinstalled the breather and told her to go for it. The engine ran as it should until my sister shut down the engine. I opened the gas tank cap and noticed that there was a very small amount of fuel left inside the tank. So, I tried the primer bulb again- But it was still not working like before.
After bringing the mower back to my place, I made a trip to a Tractor Supply store where I purchased a OEM Briggs & Stratton Primer Bulb & OEM fuel tank cap to replace the piece of garbage fuel tank cap that was included with the gas tank/carburetor ensemble.
I will probably change out the primer bulb within the next day or so. I’m not very impressed with having to work on my sisters mower so soon after installation of new parts. You Do Get What You Pay For; That’s What You Encounter When You Stray From OEM Parts.
From Buffalo, NY. Thank You very much for the information, THANK YOU.
Very thorough, thank you, this was very helpful!
Good one Don.
Dony, I used this to fix the bulb on a 6.5 Intek Edge. I had to use a 19mm for that neat trick of getting it to seat (guess it is bigger on the larger engine). Still unable to get it started.
I have replaced the gas line, cleaned the carb, put in a new needle and that tiny rubber seat that goes under the needle (used the new one), new bowl gasket and using new gasoline. I can get it to turn over once with starter spray; the bulb sounds like it is working. No leaks. I am doing this with new air filter on, but air cover off. I have liquid wrenched what I take to be either the choke control or throttle control just above the bulb and have LWRenchedthe connections from the hold down start that run along the other side of the mower. I do not see any movement in the area of the "auto-throttle control"-the main rod only moves with me pushing it, the tiny spring at the end is old, but not moving w/o some motor force. as I am used to seeing in running motors. If you have posted a video on something like this, I would appreciate the link. The mower may be as old as 2001 (Scott/John Deere with B&S)-spark plug looked ok, gaped correctly.
Again, thanks for you videos. Erving
Dony,
turned out to be a simple though fumbling fix; after taking off the engine shroud, the pull rope went to base and would not move. Si I removed the spark plug, cleaned it a bit more and returned the pull handle to the prior position and noticed a good amount of fluid flow when I did: so assumed i had flooded it. Put plug back and it started right up! Also found the B&S engine data above the exhaust area and found it originated in 12/9/1999.
Again, many thanks for all your help!!
Perfect saved me from taking too much apart was a easy fix thankyou...
Helping me out 12 yrs later!!!!! Thanks!!!!
Great to hear!
Haha you save me 300$. Was going to buy a new mower. Thanks Primer only cost me $7.00. 😜😜😜😜
Mr. Tupperzul. Check your primer to carb gasket if your mower has one or if there's an air box where the air filter is, check the gasket between the air box and the carb.
Excellent, very thorough step-by-step information, thanks!
Thank you! The 17mm socket was so easy to use, Great tip...
Thanks for the great video. Hope you would be able to answer my question.
I just cleaned the carb on my briggs & stratton, but when I push the primer bulb, I cannot hear the gas coming up, instead I can hear the air (there is gas in the tank) hence it will not start on my. After several tries it finally gets the gas up and starts though.
Thanks Dony going to put a new one in next few weeks on a 5HP Briggs and Stratton.
Good job Donyboy. You help me a lot and save me money. Greatings from ISRAEL
Uri Keshet
+Uri Keshet greetings from Canada!
good video, im going to follow your steps to fix our lawn mower.
EXACTLY what I was looking for- AND the part number! Thanks so much.
Thank you very much , the primer now seems to be working. You are excellent.
Thanks man, just got the new primer i ordered, now I know how to replace the old one!
Thank you so much for your video, very helpful
Hey Donnyboy. Witch color of the primer bulbs last longer? Black or Red?
Thank you.. fixed my Lawn Mower
Thanks for the info, got the bulb replaced without any problems. However, when I push the new bulb, it's still not delivering any fuel. What could cause that? Thanks!
Thanks a bunch!!.. My old girl will live on lol🤗
i have a mower just like this one, maybe a little newer. im trying to sell it but idk what a good price to list it for would be. everythings in great shape blade is sharp only thing is i had to replace the safety handle with a switch because the cable was broken. what would be a good price to list it for?
Thanks for the info! I just replaced mine and it is working again.
Your video is very clear and helpful but I am unable to press the tabs at both ends to push out the plastic clip. Is there a special tool that I am going to need rather just using a flatheat screwdriver?
Good vid, I have found that if one uses a black primer bulb that you should get another black primer bulb. I have tried to use a red one and that one leaked gasp.
Thanks for the help. keep up the good job.
Thanks for the video. I have put the new bulb on but now it's not pumping fuel into the carb. What am I doing wrong?
Wow I wished mine started that easy!
Excellent tutorial👍
good to see. I have a briggs that needs it so this vid is very timely
Just what I needed. I have an old 1997 B&S mower engine. It won't start properly because the bulb doesn't seem to be bringing gas into the carb. When I do get it to bring gas in it squirts iall over the place.
Thanks bud, just what I needed to know 👍
Thank you, the video has been a great help to me, clear and precise and well explained, cheers.
Brilliant - thanks for your help
I have a question. When I push the primer bulb I hear air, mower will not start. But if I put a small amount of gas in the carb it cranks right up and runs great until all of the gas I put in the carb burns then it shuts off. Is that a bad bulb and also the breather assembly?
Thanks, now I know how to replace the primer. Great Job, thanks again
