Laura Richards is a real legend, have so much respect for her. We have her to thank for Coercive Control laws. Her podcast Crime Analyst is a must! Thank you Gary
It's not just an "interesting way to look at it," it's THE way to look at it. Men will never know what it's like to walk around in this world as a woman constantly in threat. I've often wondered what it would be like to just have carte blanche to life and be able to walk around with nary a worry. There would be so much more room in my brain for other things and so much more freedom. Men rarely take this into consideration. Laura's hitting things right on the nose. Bravo to her.
Amazing guest, Laura’s knowledge and expertise is so important in understanding domestic violence against women and the importance of examining the way it’s currently dealt with.
Laura is one of the most amazing experts and as a health professional I’ve learnt so much from her. She truly is an inspiration and an advocate for all victims. This was a great interview 👍🏻⭐️
21:10 1 in 2- "the victims were telling us they were going to be killed, & then they were" 1/10 stalking cases (esp. if coercive control has been involved), that's MEANINGFUL RESEARCH/WORK! Thanks so much! I'll share❤
When I was to Law Enforcement and the Trafficking Hotline, BOTH said "You seem so erratic - calm down do you need an Ambulance?" - I was horrified, sickened, and eventually they together, "got me out" of my home of 20 years and still stalked me in two other locations... I can't wait to read this information. Perhaps Ill send the Officers who beat me in my bedroom a copy for their birthdays...
I had a stalker, he made me into a nervous wreck. Going to the police will enrage them, eventually I did knowing he was ‘happily married’ which had prevented me reporting him. didn’t want to upset his wife, he was compromising his marriage, the police did pay him a visit after years of this behaviour. Then I moved house. They’re insane dangerous men
if everything worked for me and i was laurence and not laura... host says- that is an interesting way to look at it and changes the subject... ,but it's not interesting as it is the core of all of this. if men were consistently violated, harassed, demeaned, underpaid, trafficked, character assassinated, their claims dismissed, victims ignored mocked and sent home, laws unavailable for escalating abuse, etc things would change faster. it is not a coincidence that a woman knows so much about this- firstly because she is motivated simply because she is a woman and gets it. secondly, generational trauma that every woman has in bulk, is extensively educational. thirdly, she understands that listening to the victims and seeing the patterns is vital. this is why diversity in the work place improves all of us.
Perfectly said. American mainstream media portray diversity as tokenism while it is actually about the varied lived experiences in society. Failing to make that connection is a solid indicator one lacks empathy and sympathy 🚩🚩🚩
If men were abused by other men, there would be a fight in the street to settle it. It is their motivation to control someone who is intended to fit within society. A woman cursing "like a sailor" is the equivalent of a "man just being a man" - - slogans within society to discusss when a woman is out of turn, especially if it's a motivator to silence her and 'behave better' aids in the comfort of those who accept Domestic Violence or simply do not understand such slogans, slang, and terms already silence those who likely experienced it, and those who will use it excedssivley as "means to control or alter a narrative" - as many attacks are premeditated when it's "Slow Stalking to Homicide" vs "random acts" - They know how to silence Victims to a science, themselves.
Laura you inspire me so much, I wrote about your work for my registration around how it improves my practice, so a big thank you , you truly are a blessing!
The work this woman has done is beyond phenomenal. I have so much gratitude towards her. I love how these two are completely working with each other and are on the same page We need more men like this. Thank you both 🙏❤
Oh Gary, i am so happy to see you. I followed your career for years and felt you were done over terribly and unjustly. So good to see you step into this space and use your years of experience and policing to raise awareness. Apparently I am about 3 years late 😆 This is a topic that definitely needs a spotlight to bring about legislative and changes to policing. Stalking is like an atomic bomb for the victim. Great guest, very interesting conversation and a new sub. 😊
There is an abundance of legislative updates and changes. Ask a stalking victim where their mind is when afraid they will be murdered at any time while it's happening...Only when you have no choice BUT to escape your home, with Law enforcement "waving bye bye" (with their Clerks doing the same - literally) there must be a stop to "Citizen vs Government" and let them work the laws that are there with training until it's always too late..Sometimes the stalker next door is your Local Cub Scout - or Public Figure. Psychopaths are masters of swapping personality for 'persona'
In USA there are laws. Law enforcement doesn't take it seriously. They don't have a self reporting system for victims to red flag themselves with law enforcement to add any suspects they believe might be involved. Sadly - sometimes its an officer in town...
Belies belief why some head of investigations would be indifferent to this woman’s obvious experience and expertise.Women are genetically wired differently to men and have insights that males can’t possibly have,to undermine Laura’s background and education especially in this field is hard to fathom.
Wow this woman is amazing. Good on you Gary for talking about this. If only all those in a position to instill changes to the legal system and the way that these case's are handles took the same approach. I am a victim of stalking and domestic violence and the perpetrator consistently was allowed to continue his behaviour without consequences and is still doing the same to another female now. Over 20 years several victims and not one day in jail.....
A year or 2 ago, in BC, Canada, there were 2 police officers who asked their co-worker to take a video or pic of them-grinning away, right beside a dead body of a woman on the ground. A pic of this went in the newspaper. Now, how are those 2 officers going to serve and protect half of the population they deal with-women? Neither was fired. This says a lot!! I wonder how many other officers had their pic taken like this, that were not reported?
Only 52 weeks in a year So more than one woman a week murdered in DV So glad NSW has specialised DV unit in police force Others states don’t…. Yet And as stated mysogony alive and well in all sections of society including law and police force Don’t have to tell a woman this we are sadly too aware And have all been a victim of it in one form or another
We need to have more of this information for girls, so that when something happens, they leave the relationship. Plus then safe spaces for them to go, and psyc help for both aggressor and victim.
If you're in a relationship where you are afraid of upsetting that person, where you're on edge expecting a problem, you need to escape that relationship. Toxic relationships work like that. I found that out in my early 40s. Better late than never 😣🙁
Love Laura as a long time true crime fan ❤ and obviously know Gary too through case of gorgeous William T ❤ so interesting to hear you guys chat, thank you
I could listen to Laura all day long - so insightful and knowledgeable. Love the documentary she was in about Jon Benet Ramsay, though the subject matter is horrific, the documentary itself was outstanding and I completely agree with their thoughts on what really happened 💪❤️
What's truly sad for me is being in a town where the perpetrators are the police quite often and when my beautiful kind hearted son was tied to the train tracks right behind my house. My son spoke with me about exposing the police and that night he was murdered. The cop that told me told me he committed suicide and when I told him no he screamed at me that I need to believe him. Then shortly after he...the same officer...threatened me to keep quiet or lose my other son's and grandson. He camped infront of my house for months. We'd just stare at one another.
In my opinion one of the best advice you could tell them and to help them to the best of your abilities self defense and situation awareness and how to protect themselves and not to fully rely on law enforcement to take care of it because when seconds matter police are always minutes away
Prevention. Many deaths may indeed have been prevented. I don't understand why all forms of violence aren't met with heavy actions by all of society in order to PREVENT HARM.
I loved hearing that the frontline officers were so interested in the training they were receiving from domestic violence experts that they didn't want to leave. That is heartening because I think of police culture--here in America--as being informed by toxic masculinity but I hope I'm misguided about that...never mind. I listened more and you answered my question..."still very misogynistic" :/
Domestic violence is "not the biggest crime going on?" Is stealing money worse than harming someone? Is selling drugs worse than harming someone? I'm not sure what you consider worse than harming an innocent individual that is weaker than you and that may also be a parent to your children?? Maybe that attitude in police culture is a significant part of the problem.
I wonder if part of the problem in police culture is the "bro" aspect of it, and the fact that there are a percentage of police officers that are domestic abusers (on some level) themselves. As a former homicide detective, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this...
So if someone dents a "V" into your siding & sends a message via a fake facebook acount that says "vengeance" while various other vandalism and then you find extremely high levels of dangerous heavy metals this could be an example of what youre talking about 😢
The slack government is responsible for so many deaths- they don’t punish the perpetrators- instead they blame all men. Put the aggressors in long term jail sentences and stop vilifying men.

I thought this was ‘inside the head of a serial killer’, they have spent ages attacking the police and talking about that poor woman Sarah Everard, her killer was NOT a serial killer. I’ve listened to her a lot and she appears to hate men and especially those in the police. Can she not stick to the fact that women are attacked by men and stop attacking the police. Tell us about how you weedle them out. Listen to what she is saying. ‘I worked with some terrible people who should have been weeded out’. I’m sure she did but she continually attacks her ex colleagues. Most of this is about how bad the men in the police are not how to get inside the mind of a serial killer.
There is statistical evidence femicide was reduced 33% per year when her bureau was active. Plus she got law changed. Maybe you need to listen again if you missed that information.

Yus! My two favorite people to listen to talking about people affected by family violence and true crime ❤
The combo I never knew I needed!
Its so long over due this type of information thank you both
I read that fifty two women have been murdered in Australia this year (2024) by their partner or expartner. Terrible statistics!
Is that a lot tho? Compared to other countries or other types of murders?

How do you arrest or prevent some one from committing a crime. You cant arrest someone for a crime they MIGHT commit.
We can most certainly approach stalking as a serious level of crime, we have the data of how often it escalates to violence.
