My 98 Astro has 305K on it and slowly over the last year the key quit turning to start, you'd have to push forward several times till it clicked forward and started.I sure am glad I watched this first. This video was a lifesaver.I never would have known about that little hole to release the cylinder but after watching the video it took literally 15 minutes to change it out.A few minutes time and $52 and now I'm ready for the next 305K.
i was in the same situation as you lost the key, and none of the others i had made worked, so i took off the parts like 1aauto recommends, i pulled the black plastic off the end of the switch, where your key goes in, then took some vise grips on the end of the metal part and moved it back and forth till it got free to to sin around, then used a small allen to push the tab down, and it popped right out! THANKS A MILLION 1AAUTO, YOU SAVED ME A CRAP LOAD OF TIME! 5 STARS TO YOU BROTHA!
Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on RUclips. We currently do not have a tutorial video on this particular repair. We'll keep this in mind, if we end up making this repair in the future. If you have a Chiltons or a Haynes repair manual, it should show you how to remove it in the book.
Hi John, You shouldn't have any issues with the air bag going off. You could disconnect the battery, and that would take car of any electrical concerns that you might have while working on the vehicle.
@kandleguy87 You would need to somehow get the key to turn forward. If you haven't, try to wiggle the key up and down as you turn it forward. Also you may want to make sure that the steering wheel is not locked in place. Hope this helps you out.
@WillieHatesDQ You would need to find a way to get the tumbler to turn in order to remove the switch. You could try to jiggle the key while you turn the ignition to see if this helps.
We currently do not have an auto repair video on this particular application. If you have a Haynes or a Chiltons manual for the vehicle, it should cover this repair in the book. Regards, 1aauto.com
It sounds like the steering wheel is in the locked position. While to turn the key try to move the steering wheel to the right and then to the left to see if it unlocks.
By changing out the lock cylinder, you will solve the issue. Over time the teeth inside the switch wear down and they can no longer read the key correctly so it does not release it after you turn it.
@Rheygand Sometimes the ignition wears out or breaks in these vehicles, we sell a replacement ingition and show you how to replace the one in your Chevy Venture, incase this happens to you.
Great video. Worked out perfect on my 99 Astro. The auto store did not have the special removal tool. Was told I could use a hanger. Ended up using a piece of 12 gauge ground wire if anyone is in the same situation.
Hi 1aauto! I could see from this video that you were close to removing the gauge cluster. At night, my Venture's speedometer (middle) doesn't light up but my fuel and temperature gauge (left and right side) does. I'm guessing the middle bulb is burnt out. I was wondering if you could have a tutorial video on how to change it or at least the light bulb. Thank you for the headlight, taillight and cabin air filer videos by the way! It really helped me a lot to save time and money! :)
Awesome vid, I was wondering if you had a video on how to remove the key cylinder if the tumblers are broken (some d-bag tried to steal my truck and broke the tumblers in it) and I can't turn the cylinder at all. Thanks in advance
Hey Mike - Great video. I have a 99 Pontiac Montana and sometimes the key gets stuck in the ignition. So far I've been able to get it out each time by starting/stopping or turning the wheel or messing with the gear shift - but I fear my luck will run out. Will changing the lock key cylinder solve the problem? Thanks for posting these great videos.
I just did this to a 99 blazer. But if the cylinder is frozen in the on pos then you will need to take a flat blade screwdriver and gently pry/pot it out of place to get it out after pushing in the pick. They sometimes dont just pull straight out.
It shouldn't be too bad. We carry a replacement on on our website 1aauto.com Part Number: 1AZIS00014 if you would like to see what we have. This one is for the column mounted shifter only.
It could be the issue. We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair. We do carry new key lock cylindars for your 96 Chevy Astro van on oue website. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Hello Friend. Excellent video as always. Just one question: is there some matter about programming after replacement of cylinder? Saludos desde México compadre!
Hi I have a 2007 ford transit van. when key is in ignition the gauge goes crazy and makes a funny sound . Also have to open door manually. Any suggestions.
is there a tutorial to do this with an older chevy? ive been at it for 2 days already trying to get the cylinder and the turn signal switch on my 89 caprice 305 classic
Hi! I Have a 2000 Chevy 5.7L 3500 express van. I'm trying to replace the multi function switch. The problem I'm having is trying to remove the top steering column cover. The ignition cylinder goes through the cover and the cylinder ears are in the way of removing it. Do you know if the ears come off separately or is the cylinder release somewhere else where it's accessible?
so how to you take out this cylinder if you dont have the key? my buddy was trying to cut a key for his astro van so the locksmith destroyed the cylinder taking it out so he could get the key code. is there not an easier way instead of destroying it to get it out??
DOOOOH!! After fighting to get it back in for an hour it finally dawned on hte to look carefully in the hole with a flash light. In removing the thing the flat key part in the back had turned slightly preventing me from getting it back in. All I had to do is stick my pinky in the hole and turn the thing back to the right position 2nd try and it slid in easily as shown.
I have a 2002 chevy venture. We believe the engine switch is the problem because we you cut the car off, the air conditioner blower comes on and the automatic lights. You have to jiggle the key to get it to go off. How difficult is it to replace the actual switch?
@1aauto he says you cant get a code for GM models before 98 or something like that. thats why they had to destroy it to get it out. is there not an easier way if you cant get the code? it seems this way is pretty violent and breaks things that probably shouldnt be broken....hope you can help!
Hi, i have a 98 Chevy Lumina and all of a suddent it won't turn on anymore. I put the key in and try to turn it on but it just goes all the way. It doesn't make a sound or anything. The dashboard lights won't come on at all. What is it and how can i fix it?
yes I got a 2003 Sunfire and I'm trying to see what's wrong with it I put a whole new ignition switch in it with a key came with it for somebody broke the key in the ignition column so I had to put replace a new one but now I'm the lights and it don't start up I turn back the key for throwing 20 to 30 minutes program it but it's not working so it is still like nothing popping up like you can't see the mileage nothing tell me what's really going on with it is it a fuse is it a starter or not starter but you know a sensor or a box a lockbox tell me what's going
+ricardo hernandez Thank you for watching. It appears that this vehicle was equipped with a transponder. You would need to have it replaced with an identical key to allow for the ignition to turn over. 1aauto.com
Having an issue where my venture wont start, Unless you tap on the steering colom with something. I followed the directions on here an replaced the key. But it is still doing the same thing. What should I be looking at in here to fix this issue?
Thank you for watching. You may have a problem with the switch itself. Here is a link to the part on our website. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 www.1aauto.com/ignition-switch/i/1azis00014?f=526981&y=1997?VideoReply&VideoReply&ATony

You may want to try to disconnect the battery and clean the terminals to see if that helps. If it does not, you may want to take a look at the ignition or for a possibly short somewhere in the system. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
+Nathaniel White It may be a different procedure on your application. We currently do not have an auto repair video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking. 1aauto.com
+Mon Edwar Thanks for watching! It could be a pass-lock issue, which is common on these vehicles. If you search online on how to fix this issue you will find a ton of results! 1aauto.com
I know a secret the dealerships don't want you to know. If your key is getting stuck intermittently in the ignition. Take your car to the dealer and you will need to bring your title and registration with you. Have them cut a key from scratch without using the old key. It works evertime. It's less work and a lot less money.
I can't see or feel the hole for releasing the lock cylinder. You could have moved the camera to actually show us where it is. I suspect it's pretty easy once you know, but I'm not finding it.
+Steven I would recommend having a reputable garage take a look at the issue if it persists. The passlock error is a common problem on these vehicles, you can reset the system by following a few steps. Just visit any online Chevy forum and you will find out how!

Hi John, You shouldn't have any issues with the air bag going off. You could disconnect the battery, and that would take car of any electrical concerns that you might have while working on the vehicle.
If you're talking about the seat head rests, on most vehicles you pull them up and there (may be) a button on the bottom that locks them in place.
@kandleguy87 You would need to somehow get the key to turn forward. If you haven't, try to wiggle the key up and down as you turn it forward. Also you may want to make sure that the steering wheel is not locked in place. Hope this helps you out.

@LilWinn19 You may want to check the wiring to see if there's a frayed wire.
does the replacement of lock cylinder and key affect the theft deterrent system?
@beefcakes8528 You would need to be able to turn the ignition forward in order to remove the ignition.
thanks man great video just replaced mine on my 96 silverado, same set up just no dash trim. Couldnt have done it without you:P
Successfully followed this on our 96 Chevy Astrovan, thanks
@OutragousGaming It sounds like the tumbler may have broke. You could try to replace the ignition on it. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for your help-saved me a lot of time. I was able replace the key cylinder, just like the video. Thanks again.
Thank u so much !! Just changed the one in my 02 chevy trailblazer! It was a piece of cake!
@xochix01 You may want to double check to see if everything is lined up correctly. It should just slide right in.
Unfortunately you need to be able to turn the tumbler in some way for the cylinder to be removed.

@geobeck1969 Boy that's a tough one. You need to get the ignition to turn in order to be able to remove it.
Superb video, it help me a lot.. thanks..
@Daddybopper It shouldn't as this is controlled by a matched code between your FOB and the security computer in the vehicle.
It does. You need to programming the new key before cylinder replacement since the trasponder is in the key.
