A&W is my favorite burger chain, I've been going to A&W since I could remember. Up here in Canada A&W has poutine. The poutine a little salty, but still delicious. A&W root beer has a special place in my heart. I don't know if the United States has them, but in Canada they have root beer suckers that taste just like the drink. Unfortunately you can only the find the suckers at A&W restaurants and not at mall locations.
I love Canadian that A&Ws have paper straws instead of plastic ones now, the past couple years they've been more environmentally friendly. That makes me love A&W even more.

Years ago I was spending a few days in a small town East of Edmonton, Alberta attending a graduation ceremony at a small college. The town had an A&W where my son and I ate many of our meals. I was telling one of the staff about a friend of mine in Halifax, Nova Scotia who, unknown to me, was working as a cook in the kitchen of a local A&W. I had ordered a "Papa Burger" and when it came out it had so many patties that you couldn't close the wrapper it came in. It must have had five patties on it.
The young lady laughed and told me they had one that beat that. They called it the "Mammoth Burger" and it came with ten patties of meat. I asked if they sold many of them and she told me they sold a few but they had one person who would regularly buy one every week. Ironically he was an ambulance driver who lived in the area. I love the A&W Onion Rings (with extra spice), their Root Beer (in an ice cold mug) and their Burger Family but the "Mammoth Burger" would have been a bit much.

I work for A&W Canada, and I can tell you that the canadian version has evolved a lot towards real food and natural ingredients, they removed processed cheese, refined sugar from root beer, added vegan options, sweet potato fries, real hasbrowns, naturally smoked bacon (with cherry juice in it), they also removed butter from their condiments and added margarine instead. They sadly removed hot-dogs and whistle dogs, but hey, guess it was less healthy than a burger (and it's true). They changed a lot of things, the food there is high-quality (and so is the price high), but it is so tasteful, every burger has its own ingredients mix to add a unique flavor that people love! I look at the american a&w menu and I cringe, since there are a lot of weird options that seem different from the basic and simple canadian authentic menu.

What I like about the Canadian menus is they have the classic burgers that have been around for years and they don’t mess with them they perfect them and then they will add some new things but only keep the things that people love. It’s very smart the menu not big but it dose not need too be people come for there classics. Also the fires are the best I’ve tasted that’s just me the root beer is iconic and everything is made to be somewhat healthy or better for you it’s still fast food it’s not going to be 100% healthy. And lastly the food taste like food you actually say to yourself this is good why’ll eating it.

There was an A&W on the way to the jump school. I always stopped and had an A&W lunch with a frosty mug of root beer. I told friends that I was happy to make it my last meal if it turned out to be. And, by the way, my father told me A & W stood for amburgers and woot beer. I believe him. Definitely a 50's/60's thing. What I remember best is the 80's. After finishing sledding /tobbagoning in the park on a very cold Canadian prairie winter was going with my father to A&W and warming up in the sunken dining room. They had this huge olive green cylindrical fireplace kept it real toasty and warm. Plus of course the good old days with trans fats still a thing where the oniin rings were coated in a thick crispy dark brown ring and seasoned beautifully. The modern version is thin, usually soggy and nowhere near as flavourful as the original. Taste looses out to health concious 90's. Boo!!!
No surprise I have a soft spot for the franchise.

McDonalds USA learned that the hard way. McSpaghetti was around in the mid-80s to the early 1990s in the US, failed spectacularly and McDonalds quietly gave up on it. Oddly enough, the only place it worked was ... in the Philippines and McDonalds' spaghetti has competed against Filipino chain Jollibee since the early 1980s Jollibee built a large part of their brand identity around fast food spaghetti and are trying to expand in the US in cities with small-to-large Filipino communities.

I remember going to A&W as a kid and it was still a diner type restaurant where they delivered the meals right to your car. The trays would kind of clip on the edge of the door when you rolled the window down. To this day we've still got 9 locations in a city with a population of 275k. McDonald's has 10 locations while Burger King has fallen to 3.
Yeah, we have an OBSCENE number of eating establishments in my city. You could eat at a different location every night for about 10 months. That's a lot for such a small city. As for their rootbear; A&W Rootbeer is sold in nearly EVERY grocery store, gas station and convenience store in the city.

Last summer I went to A&W restaurant in Greensburg Indiana to buy a gallon of root beer. A little blonde teenage girl came out to my van to take my order. When she came back with my calendar root beer she decided to take it back cuz she thought it was too full and she wanted to get some of the fizz out of it. So she returns in about 10 minutes with my debit card in my gallon of root beer short one glass and sticky all over the sides of the gallon where she had poured at least 8 oz of the root beer out. I'd ask her not to do this oh, but she did it anyway. When I returned home with my rooy beer it was flat as a board. There was no fizz in it whatsoever. I was beyond angry. A whole gallon of root beer of which I paid $8 for was totally ruined and not fit to drink all because a little teeny bopper wouldn't listen. I will never return to this restaurant again. I warned everyone that I could about the airport service and getting ripped off. I will continue to do so because I got no satisfaction. When I called the store to complain it was her again upon the telephone. You just can't get good service these days. A&w owes me a gallon of root beer. Do I think I'll get it, no, but at least the public will know how they treat their customers. BTW A&W was my favorite root beer.

When I worked at A&W back in the early 70s they offered dine-in restaurants that were a little above the classic "fast food" restaurant with table service, some were open 24 hours. Some were combined with the drive-in. They also offered French onion soup, fish platter, tacos, deep-dish apple pie, ice cream among other things. We had the foil wraps which keep your hamburger warm until you got it. An order was considered good when it was delivered to the customer in under five minutes. If you had to wait while the chicken cooked you were offered a free drink while you waited and the drink was refilled when you got your order. They don't do that these days, nor is the service the same. I love my A&W!

Americans: I remember going there as a kid. Loved the Papa burger. Wish they were still around.
Canadians: My city has 23 A&Ws in it and I eat it constantly because it's the best!

My parents built and ran an A&W from about 1954 to 1978. None of this was brought to the owners. They had Hamburgers, PizzaBurgers, Hot Dogs, BarBque, chicken, and shrimp..... Starting with 5c root beer, free baby root beer, Orange, coffee and various ice cream creations... This was in the upper peninsula of Michigan. They did on their own... and made a success of it all. Please don't make the corp look so good... They did nothing for their franchiese people but bill them for the franchise..

Don't have A&W in Lancaster, Ohio. My father who is in his mid 80's told me there used to be one years ago on the east side of town but closed years ago. Too bad I would of liked to tried their burgers. Take care, stay safe and GOD bless.

I just found out about A&W south of the Canadian border and genuinely gave me culture shock looking at the differences in the menu.

@Ben Shute It's not uncommon for international fast food chains like A&W to have menu differences between their locations in different countries. These variations often reflect regional tastes, preferences, and culinary traditions. If you'd like to share some specific differences you've noticed between A&W in Canada and A&W in the United States, or if you have any questions or observations about food and culture, feel free to let me know. 🍔🌭🍟

Two important points, in the 70s, we used to drive up to the A&W and order through an intercom box. The waitress (typically a teenager), would come out with the order, and hang the order on a tray (custom tray) on the car window. And the second point, we could buy jugs of rootbeer to take home and party with.

OH MY FKN GOD, the use of non fair use copyrighted content in this video is terrible. what the fuckkkk does Tommy Wiseau have to do with burgers. I get it, I do it, it's funny to throw in a few pop culture references but it's videos like this that will ruin it for everyone
