    when i was 9 years old my grampa who was a long haul truck driver took me on a cross canada trip, as we got into southern ontario he pulled his rig over and gave me 20 dollars so i could give it to terry fox. terry should be known world wide for being one of the strongest and most heroic human beings ever to walk this planet. i am humbled to have just seen him in the flesh. what that young man undertook defies all human capability and he did it as a teen and even towards the end when his cancer returned he got back out on the lonley canadian highways and fought till he couldnt fight anymore.

    Hi! I'm a Canadian, and agree with others here that Dr. Banting deserves notice. He and Dr. Best have saved countless diabetics around the world. Tommy Douglas was a surprising and welcome addition: I didn't realize he was as well regarded in other countries. The Great Gretzky himself would probably be gracious enough to offer number one to Terry Fox. There are many more Canadians we're proud of. Perhaps a "Another Top 10".? Thanks, eh.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 6 лет назад +6

      He only wanted a few thousand more troops and the permission to take action, and the UN did nothing, three years after sending a million troops to Iraq. Seriously, it doesn't take much to stop a bunch of stoned machete-wielding thugs with no military training, but they wouldn't do it. If Rwanda had just had oil...
      He also said that after he met with the men planning the genocide, that if he'd known then what they were going to do, he'd have killed them on the spot regardless of the consequences for himself.

    • @Kman31ca
      @Kman31ca 6 лет назад +3

      Yes he was an amazing man. A real hero who could have saved hundreds of thousands. And Valar, I know it's popular to say the Americans didn't step in because there was no oil. But that's not true. They just got done with the Somalia indecent were they really tried to do a noble thing by protecting the shipments of grain, that the warlords were stealing. Somalia had no oil either.
      And they did in fact do that, which staved of a famine which could have killed hundreds of thousands. Then the black hawk down indecent happened. After that they didn't want to put their soldiers in that position again. And it wasn't just them who didn't step up to the plate, it was every country out there that could have sent a couple battalions to Rwanda.
      And yes, you have a point about it being hypocritical to send a million troops to Kuwait. And the truth is simple. The entire world was worried that if Saddam took over Saudi and their oil fields. He would be able to control and dictate the price of oil to the entire world. Yes I believe morally the world should have saved the Rwandans, and I'm ashamed my country Canada didn't send troops, especially with Dollaire being a Canadian soldier.
      But I'm also in agreement that at the time, you couldn't just let Saddam control the majority of the worlds energy. It would and could have led to a huge disaster and an even bigger war. That's just being pragmatic.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 6 лет назад +4

      I'm a Canadian too, and I have been studying international politics for 25 years - basically since the Berlin Wall came down when I was a kid. Despite everything you have said, I am still disgusted and appalled at the international community's inaction and cowardice regarding Rwanda. Nothing excuses it - not pragmatism, not ignorance, nothing. Notice I didn't even mention the United States in my previous comment, as I was aware of Black Hawk down. But think about it. All that Dallaire wanted was a few thousand men and the freedom to act. He wasn't asking for much at all. And they just wouldn't do it.
      Black Africans, one 'disaster' that killed 19 men, and the world and the most powerful nation on earth get gunshy. Meanwhile, 8,000 members of the international community have died in Irag and Afghanistan, including 158 Canadians in the latter, $2.5 - 5 trillion has gone down the drain, and we don't even know if we really accomplished anything or just made it all worse. It is doubtful whether Dallaire would have lost even a single man, the forces he was facing were so weak and disorganized compared to his own. And it is true, if Rwanda had oil, the story would have been completely different. The popular version is the correct one here.

    • @soyentak5076

      how is garbage failure Romeo Dallaire an honourable mention, but Arthur Currie is totally ignored? One was a General that Failed to stop a genocide, but has tons of excuses (Generals are Paid to get it done). The other created the best fighting force in the world at the time in 1917-1918, that were called by their enemies as the Shock Troops of the British Empire; in one of the biggest wars of all-time.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 5 лет назад +2

      What was Dallaire supposed to do? He was prohibited from firing on anyone unless fired upon. He protected as many people as he could put between his own men and the killers, as then he would be allowed to shoot. And the cowardly killers didn't dare attack his men.

    I realize that this is a "most famous" list, and thank you for it, but if we were to discuss the greatest Canadians in history, yeah, we've already done that here. Even had a programme on the CBC about it. With all due respect to the memory of Terry Fox, his family, and his unshakable spirit, tenacity, strength, and determination to his cause - he was and continues to be an inspiration to Canada and to the world - I'd place Fox at number three behind Tommy Douglas at #1, who brought us universal healthcare, David Suzuki at # 2, for his unwavering fight in the name of science, social justice, and for the preservation of the environment, and just before Lester B. Pearson at #4 for establishing peaceful Canadian influence in the world while laying the foundation of independence, and for the many accomplishments listed in the video.

    While he might not be seen as a huge influence to most people, James Doohan deserves a mention. He grew up in my town in Southwestern Ontario (Sarnia), where he was an army cadet that eventually fought in WWII and lost his right middle finger. The most important thing he did though was help place the foundations for Star Trek, and continued to add more and more building blocks on top. The only descriptor of his role he was given was 'chief engineer' at his audition, and he brought Montgomery Scott to life with just that title. James Doohan also helped create the basis of the Klingon language, a lot of the fundamental parts of TOS, and honestly put his heart and soul into Star Trek in a way many of the other cast members didn't. Hell, he was so dedicated to Star Trek his ashes were shot into space when he died in the 90s. If it weren't for James Doohan, I'm almost certain we wouldn't have the Star Trek we know and love today.

    A very good list that seems to have real insight into Great Canadians and into those Canadians, we would say are our best. But really misses in understanding Canadians with Terry Fox not being number one.

      I know exactly who he is and I also live close to Sarnia but how could you possibly think he is anywhere close to as popular as people like Beiber or Pam Anderson.

    With Wayne Gretzky being my favorite hockey player, Terry Fox should still have been #1.

    As a disabled person, Terry Fox is an inspiration. If the man can walk across Canada with a prosthetic leg, then I have no excuse to siege the day
