Modern Farmhouse TV Stand

- Building a modern farmhouse TV stand for your home starts here. We used faux shiplap on the ends, sanded birch plywood and 1 by spruce material in this build. Farmhouse style furniture is very popular because it looks great and is functional. I built this modern Farmhouse TV stand based on my wife's design. She wanted a TV stand with clean lines with a modern feel, but the distressed look gives it that farmhouse decor feel. The fake shiplap ends adds to the uniqueness of this farmhouse furniture piece. Using this method allows you to make your own shiplap cheap. Let us show you our techniques for building this type of farmhouse console table.

I like the way you keep your language simple and to the point but still come across as likeable and sincere.
Thank you for all the videos. You've given me the final push to start doing this myself.
And by start I mean I've nearly finished building my workshop!
Thank you.
That's great. Thank you
Great book case. When my daughter started nursing school I built her one very similar. As an extra surprise in put a Bluetooth module and speakers under the top and a wireless charger. It was over kill but she loved it.
My Dad taught me to build. At the end of every project we built we would sign and date it on the back or bottom. I still do that when I build for family. It’s comforting to move a piece of furniture and see my Dads and my name on it. It’s the connection.
Sorry for the long comment but it reminded me of my Dad and I in the shop.
Thanks for the reminder
That's great. Thank you.
you look familiar always figured Kim would hook up with woodworker...she lies...
To make breaking down sheet goods easier get a 4x8 sheet of 2 inch foam board insulation. Set your sheet goods on the foam board. Set your saw to just go through your material and you can use the insulation for a long long time. I also use saw horses with 2x4 holders and 2 8 foot 2x4’s to lay the insulation on. Works perfectly with my track saw but your rip cut will do the same thing. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the time you put in to the content you provide. Well done!!!
Good idea. Thanks
I love watching your video's over and over
I appreciate it
Our 12yr old Toshiba TV just died. Looks like a smart TV and new stand is in our near future. Great video.
Thank you
Enjoy your videos. My wife retired our antique kitchen table to her family. So I need to build a trestle table (48 inches table height. Hoping to convince her in having a 4x4 granite top.
Great job. Thanks
Thank you
Hey Matt! I've been woodworking throughout my life, but never really got serious about it until now. My wife and I are getting a business started, and have found your videos so INCREDIBLY helpful. We enjoy your videos and appreciate your attention to detail so we don't miss a thing. Will be keeping an eye out for more content and ideas. Thanks for everything.
Oh, and I'm starting this TV stand tomorrow!
Great to hear! Glad they’ve helped.
Love your videos Matt. I watch them over and over and learn something new every time.
Lovely. Wife has good taste for design & finish.
Very nice! I really like the ship lap accents and think that the sun bleached stain along with the distressed biscuit white pulled the whole project together nicely.
Thank you. Yes, my wife did an awesome job with the design and colors!
I used the same faux shiplap in my kitchen and bath. Get the look without spending alot of $$$. I like the console directions too. Thanks for sharing
I bet it looks great! Thank you.
Another great video! Thoroughly appreciate the explanations of your personal techniques.
Thank you
At about 24:00 into the video you mentioned how even that little piece of luan would add a lot of strength to the piece. That is SO VERY TRUE. That backing will add a great deal of rigidity to the piece which will prevent the rocking you quickly end up with when buying the cheap particle board type furniture from big box stores. Those cheaper pieces of furniture have a thin cardboard type backing material which offers no rigidity and strength, thus the pieces start to rock side to side quickly and a short time later the piece starts to fall apart. Even the construction grade lumber used in some woodworking shops will last decades if people come back occasionally and apply a fresh wax coat as you show for protection.
👊🏻
Nice and I'm going to try this
Simple ,but nice. Good job.
Thanks!
Great job and it looks awesome. Thanks for the detailed video. I know I will be building one very similar.
Nice finish
Thank you
Thanks for sharing your projects and not editing out little things that seem to always happen doing something new. It’s been a-lot of help.
Glad they help
I've got the Kregg 3, the handy thing about that one is that if your plans change half way through construction it's easy to use in a tight spot of a partially built piece if furniture. Lovely TV unit.
Thanks. yes R3 is great
That came out nice, my Wife wants an entertainment center too, I like the way it was distressed. thanks for sharing. Chuck
Thanks for the kind words!
@@731Woodworks that's a good build sir, and when did you sneak that inch and a half on the bottom of that shelf I didn't see that? but it was good you did it, shelf integrity. Oops I guess I should have watched it all the way to the end before replying 👍
Thank you
Thanks… using this to build my own!
Well done! Thanks for the share and I will be using this idea in the very near future.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent build from one AR brother to another.
Thank you
I appreciate your channel and all that you do to help encourage others to start woodworking and to follow their dreams! Thanks for all the great content Matt!
Beautiful job
Thank you! 😊
We sure enjoy watching your videos! Keep up the fantastic work and thoroughly explain for people like us in our late 60's. God Bless.
I appreciate the kind words! Thank you.
Jackie Sullinger , amen to that!
I love this. I've spent all day looking for a planked rustic cabinet and couldn't find one. Opened up my RUclips your video was recommended. Can't wait to build this it's going to be a coffee snack bar @ 44" tall. If all goes well I will adjust plans to make a kitchen cabinet as well.
Looking forward to your round table I plan to build one as well . I will wait to see what you and your wife come up with.
Thank you. Glad it helped
Thank you so much. He’s been waiting patiently so he can finish it. I’m very impressed how he followed your instructions exact. Thanks again for answering Bob’s question. God Bless you!🙏❤️
Binge watching all your vids 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you
Great job Matt it turned out awesome!
Thank you
Nice, my very next project, with dark stained top, wax finish. Really nice!
Nice
Thoroughly enjoyable video and your work is excellent. The pace for me as a beginner is great. Much appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just started watching your videos, awesome job. Inspiring me to build my own furnishings
Thanks you. Thanksfor watching!
second time in 2 days I have seen the nickel method! Your wife is a Genius!!
Ha. Thanks!
Beautiful paint there!
Great project and work as usual. I have noticed that between this project and the DIY TV Stand, the shelf construction is a little different. On this project the horizontal shelves are all solid pieces and the vertical pieces are cut for each shelf. On the DIY TV Stand, the vertical pieces were solid and horizontal shelves were cut. Do you think it makes a lot of structural difference or difference in strength? I really like both projects. Ever thought about doing a barn door style of cabinet/stand like these? Thanks for your content and sharing your talent.
Great job!!
Great build and very informative video as always. Love the the faux ship lap. I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks Matt.
Awesome, thank you!
inspirational
I’m loving your videos.🤷♂️😉
Don't need expensive tools to make a really nice project... I like that. Thank you for showing us to make this. New subscriber. :)
Thank you
New subscriber here. This is the first video that I've watched from your channel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing this online, I can't wait to watch the rest.
I really appreciate that! 🙏🏻
Ya'll do beautiful work and I love the way 731 show luv to Mrs 0731.
Thank you
nice work thanks all your hard work
Much appreciated
I like that stain! Looks good.
Thank you sir! I appreciate that.
This project turned out spectacular. I am going to make a bookshelf using these features. 👍
Awesome. That’s a great idea. I’d like to see a pic of it when it’s done.
@@731Woodworks I will gladly share upon completion!
Awesome. Thanks!
I know this an old video, but I noticed you had a problem with the 3/8 round over detail. You could use a 3/8 cove bit to make a mirror image cove on the end grain to match the round over pattern. It works just as good as a matched bit set. Just in case you run into that problem again. BTW, I enjoy watching your channel. God Bless.
I love that you leave in those "uh ohs". From my very limited experience, I come across these moments all the time. It's nice to see that you do too, and how you deal with it on the fly. Love the vids. I'm gonna use some of ur vids as plans to start making some of my first projects.
thanks
That's what made me subscribe plus the sense of humor.
Thank you
You done good I like it too. You gave me an Ideal
Very well done. This looks very sturdy. I wish I saw this before I went out and bought a TV Stand. Thanks for sharing this project.
Thank you! Now you know you can build your own furniture next time!
Another great build, thanks!
Thank you
Thanks for narrating and thinking out loud...and sharing the 'uh oh' times. That helps me a lot! 👊
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice build again...like the idea of the z-clips...learn something everytime I watch one of your videos
I appreciate that a lot. Glad they help. I’m usually learning as a go, ha.
New subscriber here. I just want to say thank you for sharing these videos. I appreciate the way you teach, and your humor. Hopefully I'll get some of these tools and start building beautiful furniture like you do here for my home.
Thanks again!
Thank you
great job. When you have a small crack, add some glue and then sand. The dust will mix in with the glue and you will never see the gap. Keep up the great video's
Thank you
I'm going to tackle this project today!
👊🏻 let me know how it turns out
Thanks for the video, great craftsmanship and I like the way you explain what and how you’re building. Very well spoken, thanks again...
I appreciate the kind words and feedback! Are you going to build something similar?
Beautiful!!
Thank you
Thanks for the awesome video! I’ve been making farm house baby gates for a few years now and learned so much from you. Can’t wait to make this next!!
That's awesome. I'd love to see pics of the baby gates. If you have Instagram, send me some pics @731woodworks
That rip saw guide is a great tool! Excellent video man. I'm def about to step up my hobby and make some extra money ;)
Thank you
Oooo i wonder if you have done the sides of the shelf w a herringbond pattern that would be cool!!
Wonderful piece please give a newbie some info on tools and recommend what brand and size of a quality table saw to upgrade to.
Love it. I am actually half way done building another one for the wife with a live edge top. Not sure if she wants all open like the last one or if she wants it enclosed. Time will tell lol
Nice! Send me a pic when it’s done if you don’t mind. Would love to see it.
As always great job thank you for the video. very informative.
Thank you. I appreciate that
Cool, what was that sprayer you were using ?
That's a great build looks sweet. I would lille to build a corner entertainment center so I'm trying to figure out the steps for doing one
Thanks. That will be a neat project
So methodical work sir!
Thank you
I have recently built this tv stand to your specs, almost. My wife loves it as it matches the coffee table, and end tables I did two months ago. I have throughly enjoyed watching your videos. Very informative and great step by step instructions. PS- I have been a Kreg jig lover for years. Happy holidays
I’ll keep watching
Great to hear. Thank you
Another great video!!!
Thanks!
Good stuff. Just found your channel. "Most of mine anyways". I'm just learning, making a ton of mistakes but finding ways to be more thorough!
I'm not sure how this would look, but try using a 90 degree V bit on the side panels so it looks like shiplap. Less material used and possibly quicker, or run the side panel on the table saw with the blade up high enough to simulate ship lap. Great project!!
Thanks for the tip. I’ve seen that used on projects and it looks great.
I was going to suggest the same thing, especially if you are wanting to stain the project, all wood would be the same.
True
Cool TV stand, only one thing I will add. If you rabbit the back so the Luan back panel sits on flush it makes your whole cabinet completely square and strong. Just the way I learned anyway, just FYI
I like this build plus ya really are easy to undersand
I appreciate that! Are you looking to build a tv stand yourself?
@@731Woodworks yes i am
Nice. Let me know if I can help. Would love to see pictures when you’re done.
Nice 👌
Thank you
Looks great!
Thank you
Wow, enjoy your videos and craftmanship, we are in process of making 2 end tables and coffetable, as you teach us!
Awesome! Thank you!
Beautiful job Matt! Any chance your wife has a RUclips Video on her distressing technique?
Nice build. Excellent attention to detail. I love that Kreg rip tool. Going to order one now. The DeWalt planer video brought me in and this vid made me subscribe. Fellow RUclipsr here! Thanks again!
Thank you! I'll check out your channel. Not sure how I missed this comment. Sorry.
Hey Matt! Love love love your videos! I am just getting started with my farmhouse niche and starting out on my woodworking business. Wish we lived closer so I could pick your brain, but what would something like this sell for in your area?
I just got done doing my bathroom with that style of shiplap the wife's loves it. I'm going to give thus stand a try once I'm done with current project. Keep at it man.
Nice! Share pics to me on instagram or facebook. I would love to see the finished product if you want to share.
Awesome video
Thank you 🙏🏻
I can’t wait to try this!
Let us know how it comes out
You said msrp for the coffee bar would be 1-1.25k, what would the tv stand go for around 750 I would guess. Package deal both for 1900. To date all I have done are distressed end tables and the wife wanted the tops epoxy' d after staining. I plan to pour tomorrow and then start the hall tree after my weekend shift. Dog kennel will follow in 2 weeks I hope. These 3 items should give some good pics for marketplace. Also, where is the new shop dog at? Keep up the good work.
That would be a fair price for those. Shop dogs prefer the indoors now lol.
Great video and build!!
Thank you
Looks good
Thank you!
This was an awesome build... And yes, I did feel that fist bump as soon as I hit the "like" button 👊
Awesome thank you 👊
That's amazing man!
Thank you
Thank you
Nice! I suggest you leave a BOM list, and specifications on dimension... I started the build and wasted some 2X4 because everything was 6ft... rookie mistake... I made the top the same size of shelf... now I’m stuck making a decision to counter sink in some bolts to hold the top.
bee begotti I agree, did he ever respond and give u the list? That’s what I need as well.
Sorry, everything I have is in the video.
So funny..we have that exact metal tree thing on the wall you have. From Hobby Lobby!!!
👊🏻
We actually bought ours at Mardel's, which is owned by the same company.
Hey! Do you have any tips on finishing plywood? I am using poplar plywood in my campervan build.
Is primer necessary?
I am looking for a finish that provides good protection against moisture, but also good protection overall.
I guess the best solution is to paint it?
Love your video! Lots of good advise. Would love to see your work with a stable video and slower movement when your talking/describing your work. But otherwise great job!
Thank you
New follower, great job!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great work bro! I made your coffee table awhile back and love your videos. I’m also working with a garage shop, you’re motivating me to keep improving. Keep up the good worj
I appreciate that. Be sure to share your work with me on Instagram if you don’t mind.
Love the build- especially the shiplap look. Would it be a big deal to add sliding barn door hardware on the front?
I don't think it would be too hard
@@731Woodworks Great. I didnt think so either just by looking at it. I like farmhouse but the cross cuts are getting a little out of hand. Haha. Thanks. I just bought the plywood and am about to get started.
Good luck
Really cool build and came out very good looking. Is there a list of material somewhere to reference if we want to make this ourselves (the wood itself, how much of what size)? I can probably get a list by jotting some notes down while re-watching, but just curious if there was a list easy to see somewhere first.
Thanks for the cool video.
Thanks. Sorry I didn’t keep a list
@@731Woodworks no worries, thank you.
love the build! will you make the build plans available for download, like some of your other diy builds?
Yes. I am working with someone to make plans of my builds. It’s just taking some time to get them all done
I use the same saw horse benches as a workbench. We both need a real workbench!
is biscuit white the color you chose to do the majority of your house in? Just curious as its the color you use the most. Looks great!
Thanks. Yes we have a lot of items in that color
