DeepPurple never left , they had so many changes I think it hurt them publicly but never music wise they always put out great music go back & listen you won’t be disappointed
Yup. The Steve Morse era was great. I saw that lineup live and they put on a great show (and this is coming from someone who saw the Mark II lineup live on more than one occasion).
Ever since Steve Morse has left the band people started talking badly about him. It's really strange. Apart from the fact that he saved the band all those years ago he really lifted them up to new hights. They sounded amazing with him, especially with Jon Lord still on board. Perihelion and Abandon Live are among my favorite Purple concerts. In his last years with the band though, I felt that he was losing his spark. It was the right decision to leave, even though he (at least officially) left because of the severe illness of his wife who sadly passed away not too long ago.
No, he never "saved" Deep Purple, lol. Steve Morse is responsible for making Deep Purple sounding dull and boring, and he never had any spark like what Ritchie and seemingly Simon has. Listening to these three Deep Purple songs, you can realise the spark that Morse never really had, at least for Deep Purple. Deep Purple are one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, not just a good rock band where any random could fit. It only took 3 songs for the most of us to understand that, but I realised the drop in quality since 2000. Steve Morse may be a good guitarist, but he was never what Deep Purple needed. Simon and Don Airey are what exactly Deep Purple needed. Nobody is speaking about any album of Steven Morse era, they're all mostly forgettable. Not exactly bad, but not memorable either. Simon and Don are going to change that.
IMO not even close. Purpendicular And the last 3 albums before this one dwarf this music. Listen to this then listen to classic DP and many of the Morse tunes this just doesn’t hold up
Deep Purple always released great albums and live they are more than fantastic. I loved Steve Morse and the others and I love Simon, both are great live. For me they are the best band ever 😀😍
My favorites in this order. 1. Lazy Sod 2. Portable Door 3. Pictures of You Very impressive tracks so far. Best I’ve heard from Purple in years. They know how to give each other room to breathe, nothing sounds congested. Love it! Anyone who’s a YES fan check out Jon Anderson and Band of Geeks new track - Shine On. It sounds like a modern 2024 version right off of 90125‼️ Another great surprise!! 👍 😀
I think you're so right about sounding like the Mark 2. One of them, I believe it's the "Portable door" one, sounds a bit like "Pictures of home" from Machine Head. Yes, they seem, at this point in their lives (the OGs, the 2 Ians, Roger, even Don) to want to get back to their roots as a final tribute to the fantastic purple sound they had a little after they first started ...
Deep Purple is well known for being one of the founding groups of hard rock. Their music had a significant influence on the development of genres such as heavy metal. Their 1972 album “Machine Head,” which included the hit “Smoke on the Water,” is often cited as a major influence in the rock world. Despite several line-up changes, Deep Purple continues to tour and produce music to this day. They left an indelible mark on the history of rock music.
Michael the last three or so albums Deep Purple put out have been pretty solid have you heard those? I have yet to hear these new songs but I expect they will be be pretty strong.
Michael, he's right! Those last few albums including the latest have all been produced by Bob Ezrin too. NOW What?! is amazing! Give Vincent Price a listen.
I totally agree, with Bob Ezrin as a producer Deep Purple has been on the way up... Woosh! even landed on the top 4 seat in the UK albums chart, their highest chart for a studio album since Burn, beating Stormbringer and Perfect Strangers.
I completely disagree, I love Steve Morse and I miss him. Everything that Steve Morse recorded with Deep Purple starting with the Perpendicular album up until he left the band due to his wife's illness is just amazing. I'm 67 years old so I go all the way back to Ritchie Blackmore who I love but I can't explain it, I like Steve Morse even better. Not really used to Simon yet.. With all that being said, I love what I've heard so far from the new album and I'm going to order the vinyl.
@markhaus5441 I'm not saying Simon isn't good, but the improvisation skills of Steve were second to none. Especially the battles between him and Jon, Don were out of this world. Just listen to live in Montreal or Bombay, even Australia. The band seemed much happier, more relaxed. Richie is good but very unpredictable and moody.
I agree Steve Morse took DP into an interesting more musically and vocally melodic direction. Purpendicular will ranked as one of DPs finest albums. This album is good but not really a big sound. Whoosh was really interesting. Morse was great for DP. McBride is good but there really isn’t much spark in many of these songs
Micheal you are so right 🎶 this new Deep Purple album will be one of their best based on the singles released. Wow I’m excited for the new album 💥 Cheers from Houston 🇺🇸 love your channel my Brother 💕🎶
1-Portable Door (Inspirational epic wording) 2-Lazy Sod (Beat along, tap a feet) 3-Pictures of You (The perfect storm in a soul) My first reaction after the whole album grasp yesterday... was a "fusion of In Rock + Machine Head + Perfect Strangers" variety -- precise terminology of tempo and other hard-rock concepts. My brain enjoyed a deep (pun intended) recall of similar structures from bass and poetic scales. After all, it's all about their fabulous experience still majorly creative.
Whoosh was the best thing Purple released since 'Perfect Strangers' IMO . Lazy Sod is pure class ...Gillan is sounding better than ever which is bloody amazing at his vintage .... i think i know what's knockin' at your back door 😁
Woosh! was fabulous, even though it charted well it was in 2020 around the time Covid hit the world... it would have been nice to see them tour and maybe get better exposure in USA.
My favourite band and looks like the new album is going tobe a classic. They've certainly gone back to that Mk2 vibe and I can't wait for the new album. In order at the moment I'd simply reverse the order in which they came out, but time may change that.
I agree with your points. I haven't heard all three new songs yet, but the two I've heard - Lazy Sod and Portable Door are good songs. Yes, as a big Mark II fan I miss Blackmore and Lord, but Airey and McBride hold up their end on the songs. I was also impressed with how good Ian Gillan's voice sounds. As we know, the pipes start going as you age, but he sounded in good form. I will definitely be picking up this album.
If you like Machine Head, then I think you’ll like these songs Royce! No long jams like on Machine Head, but shorter songs with a mark 2 feel! I’m so sorry for the late response, but I was down for the count since Monday brother! ❤
Michael, great episode. I'm a musician too and a huge Deep Purple fan. Can't wait for the "=1" album to be released. You really ought to give another serious listen the albums Steve Morse played on...
Lazy Sod is so much fun. Really digging the instrumental outro on Pictures of You and Portable Door is very good. Ian Gillan's voice is holding well too at 79 years of age and pretty impressed with Simon McBride so far... As for other albums by classic bands, Chaos and Colour by Uriah Heep from last year is fantastic! There's a band that's showing no signs of slowing down!
Great analysis! This new Album is going to be fun! Waiting for my preorder CD and going to listen very loudly! Ive been going back and listening more to the Morse year albums and Woosh! is on repeat for me lately.
I removed my initial comment. I am taking it back. I bought the new album today. Excuse the language, but "It's f*cking hot!" Jon Lord would be smiling if he heard it. 💜💜💜💜💜
I first got into Deep Purple in 1974 and preferred them to Led Zep who had a heavier, at times ponderous, sound. Now I like them equally as they both have a different approach to songwriting. Simon McBride is from Northern Ireland like me so, out of curiosity, I gave "Portable Door" a listen. I liked it and the subsequent single release from the forthcoming new album but the third release, "Lazy Sod", is the best yet. I love both the guitar and keyboard solos and Ian's lyrics are as cheeky as ever. Three good songs in a row is all the convincing I need and I have pre-ordered the album with additional live tour DVD. The new sound is reminiscent of their Mark II incarnation but it also has a fresh spin. I felt that also with the new Rolling Stones album "Hackney Diamonds" which is the band's best in years. Producers may have something to do with it. Bob Ezrin's work with the great Alice Cooper was excellent. Well, we'll see if the album has other standout tracks later this month but I for one am hopeful that the band have hit a rich vein and excited by where they go from here. A good video as always, Michael.
He's a talented guitarist but best of all he has an easy going personality, Mike, which means he is unlikely to fall out with his band mates (like Ritchie Blackmore!). Ha ha.
Can’t wait for this album! To be honest, I never listened to much after CTTB. Loved everything from Shades through CTTB, but then just drifted away. Just texted some friends to listen to these first three singles and told them I may have to purchase =1. If these three are any clue, we have some classic Purple here. Glover and Paice are as amazing as ever, Don Airey sounds fantastic on the Hammond, Simon McBride has a very Ritchie-esque sound, and Gillan…just wow.
I own 46 Deep Purple albums. I'm looking forward to this one. The last few with Morse were good. No disrespect to Steve but I think Mcbride is a better fit for the band.
Deep purple has changed members like we change calendars. It’s part of their legendary history 1. Pictures of you 2. Portable door 3. Lazy sod. 2 and 3 are tough to place. Probably a tie
I think it will be near impossible to surpass the masterpiece that is Purpendicular and to a lesser extent Now What!? Yes folks musically superior to Machine Head and In Rock. Well we are all entitled to our opinions.
From what I've heard of this album, which I've pre ordered, this sounds like Deep Purple of old 😃👍 Don Airey and Simon McBride are great additions to the band. Looking forward to July 19th when =1 is released 👌
Hey Michael!!! Dang!! I Love All 3!!Just Heard " Lazy Sod" Yesterday..... Totally Agree With You, They Are Hitting On All Cylinders!! Gives Me A Warm Feeling.....
Deep Purple will always have my respect. Deep Purple influenced other great hard rock bands. I appreciate the triad that influenced hard rock. This is only my opinion. Not everyone is going to agree. It is my first time listening to your show Deep Purple caught my attention…
Michael thank you for listening to my pleases to you to cover Deep Purple. Now you have, maybe you want to go over some more of their work from this century. You have to listen to the whole albums all if the way through to get a feel for the music as each album had its own feel. You need your feel them all separately.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Great Michael, I can’t wait to hear your breakdowns. Thank you! I really admire your work, so it means a lot to me that you’re doing this. Also, my two sons are black belts as well. So much respect for your accomplishments as well as your musical tastes. Tang Soo👊🏻!!! That’s the Tang Soo Do greeting.
Greetings from Newfoundland. I just joined the Tribe ! The lack of interplay between Don and Simon and the 4 minute songs is certainly different and noticeable for Deep Purple. The guitar/organ duels were once a cornerstone of their sound. On his past work with the guys, Bob Ezrin was all about encouraging the band to stretch out. As far as the singles,1- Portable Door 2- Lazy Sod 3- Pictures of You . All the songs are easily digestable, but I doubt I'll be humming them from memory in 6 months from now.
Just subscribed! I reckon the new album is gonna be fantastic! Simon is ok but I liked Stevy after Ritchie. (Abandon is a masterpiece for me-I play the guitar too) Lazy Sod-is pretty good , the rest of the two songs are at approximately the same level (IMO). Best regards from Moscow, Russia, Cheers!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Just as yesterday, I was listenin' to The solo album by Simon Macbride/"The Fighter'-(22) All seems to be ok but honestly-nothing impressed me a great deal which I could't tell 'bout Steve Morses' every single album! They are just works of a genius. 👍🤝🥂
I've enjoyed all of Purple's albums since Now What!? Whoosh is the best of the bunch so far. I'll certainly be listening to the new album when it comes out.
All three songs are very good. They remind me of the very early sound of Mk2 (In Rock). Almost to the point where I begin to wonder if there was any artificial “enhancement” going on. I don’t mean that to sound critical, but can’t help but wonder. The interplay between the members is phenomenal. Sounds very much like a real band. I like the Morse era, but McBride seems like a better fit. He should because he was in Don Airey’s solo band. Either way, glad to see that these old sods are making great music.
First of all, I loved the Mark II era. I also accept that Steve Morse is a brilliant guitarist. But I never liked his sound, the sound of his guitar. There were certainly some outstanding songs with him, but somehow something was always missing to fulfill the magic of Deep Purple. I have to say that I was and always will be a fan of Ritchie Blackmore. Now Simon McBride. For the first time since Ritchie left, I have the Deep Purple feeling again. The songs I know so far are excellent. The guitar sound feels right. I am so excited about the full album. And I hope that Deep Purple will be around for a long time to come.
I'm going through the same thing as you. MK.II is where it's at for me (not to knock any of the other iterations of the band, just personal preference) , and kinda lost track/interest when it comes to their latter day work. Latest track (Lazy Sod) did pop up in my spotify 'new music' suggestions though. It did have that MK.II flavour/vibe (and a bit Mk.II of swagger/attitude if you will) to it that struck the right chord so to speak. Not trying to pick it apart too much though, just gonna enjoy it for what it is.
Please rethink your considaration of Steve Morse for all Deep Purple albums after 2012. Now What!?, InFinite, Whoosh! and I myself even have had a couple of good laughs and enjoyment with Turning To Crime. Now I still have to wait for almost two weeks for a classic new almost Mark II album by this Perfect Strangers band.
Based on the first three tracks, I am doing something I haven't done since 1984. I am buying the new Deep Purple album. And you are right, its new music, but it sounds familiar. Portable door is really a very good sounding and catchy song that should be hit if radio stations stilled played new music. I don't need to hear Smoke On The Water for the 10,000th time, but Portable Door sure would sound great on the radio.
These 3 songs are great! I liked 3:09 them all on first listen. Now you have to be sceptical these days with pro tools and auto tune, but Gillans voice is cool, he has a kind of slur going which I love.
Another good album coming. Can't find one track i don't like. Simon has a bit of Ritchie and Steve's playing style in these 3 tracks, so he'll be a perfect fit. Bring it on
Portable Door, Pictures of You, Lazy Sod. Downloaded the Album yesterday and the first four songs are very strong, the fourth track is Portable Door. The is a masterpiece comparable to Yes’ Mirror To The Sky from 2023. Only dislike a couple of the slower tracks. Five stars for = 1!!!

Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming from Purpendicular is an awesome Morse era track.
it is one of the top 10 best songs ever from Deep Purple.

Purpendicular is a fantastic album
Ever since Steve Morse has left the band people started talking badly about him. It's really strange. Perihelion and Abandon Live are among my favorite Purple concerts. In his last years with the band though, I felt that he was losing his spark. I actually think Woosh! was one of their best with Steve Morse and DP was on the right track - but damn.... Covid 🙄
No, he never "saved" Deep Purple, lol. Steve Morse is responsible for making Deep Purple sounding dull and boring, and he never had any spark like what Ritchie and seemingly Simon has. Michael thank you for listening to my pleases to you to cover Deep Purple. Now you have, maybe you want to go over some more of their work from this century. You have to listen to the whole albums all if the way through to get a feel for the music as each album had its own feel. You need your feel them all separately.
I agree Martin! I am reassessing their stuff now! ❤
That’s the Tang Soo Do greeting.
deep purple is immortal !
Right back atcha from the USA Mike! We are indeed an international Tribe! Spread the word brother!❤
Welcome to the Tribe Nick! And a cheers back from Sunny California! ❤
I’m gonna listen to their last few albums for a reintroduction to the band Ilabelle! ❤
Hi Micheal. I totally agree and have ordered the album. Great stuff! Cheers Glenn Sydney Oz 🙏🍺
Hope you enjoy it Glenn! I’m, ordering it tonight! ❤ And greeting from the USA brother! ❤🎉👌
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Happy 4th of July to you Micheal 🥳🍺🙏
All three songs are very good. They remind me of the very early sound of Mk2 (In Rock). Almost to the point where I begin to wonder if there was any artificial “enhancement” going on. I don’t mean that to sound critical, but can’t help but wonder.
The interplay between the members is phenomenal. Sounds very much like a real band. I like the Morse era, but McBride seems like a better fit. He should because he was in Don Airey’s solo band.
Either way, glad to see that these old sods are making great music.
Amazing comeback
Don Airey shines
This new record has a Perfect Strangers / The House of Blue Light vibe. My favorite of their sounds….
Like all 3, Portable Door, Pictures of You, Lazy Sod in that order.
Hopefully Its The Return of Rock N Roll
1) Portable
2) Sod
3) Pictures
The 1st 2 could flip.
Always one of my top bands since 1970, through thick and thin, you can't keep a good band down!
Couldn't agree more!❤
Very interesting album.
I liked "Infinite" from DP last albums, but this one sounds even better. (indeed close to MKII)
Sounds VERY promising so far--looking forward to it! One more week..... T
I've heard 3 songs with the first single by far the best
I'm going through the same thing as you. MK.II is where it's at for me (not to knock any of the other iterations of the band, just personal preference) , and kinda lost track/interest when it comes to their latter day work.
Latest track (Lazy Sod) did pop up in my spotify 'new music' suggestions though. It did have that MK.II flavour/vibe (and a bit Mk.II of swagger/attitude if you will) to it that struck the right chord so to speak. Not trying to pick it apart too much though, just gonna enjoy it for what it is.
Yea and listen to the lyrics toughest hard rock ❤
I agree 100%
Awesome to be honest have a wonderful day Michael and have a wonderful happy independence day to the United states ❤😊
Thanks so much Amin! A belated thanx for the 4th! ❤
What I heard , it sounds really good. Lazy Sod was great!
In my book their last several album have pretty good.Sounds like this one will just be a continuation of great music
Yes its a brilliant rock album
Haven't bought a Purple album since Ritchie finally left...🤓 Well bought some live Bluerays/DVDs from the Morse era...
These 3 songs are great! I liked 3:09 them all on first listen. Now you have to be sceptical these days with pro tools and auto tune, but Gillans voice is cool, he has a kind of slur going which I love.
This may be their best album since Burn.
Another good album coming. Can't find one track i don't like.
Simon has a bit of Ritchie and Steve's playing style in these 3 tracks, so he'll be a perfect fit.
Bring it on
Yes, plz.
This can be said for all of their albums.
The same goes for me with Steve Morse. Don has always been a big influence for me. Simon fits in very well.
One of their best? No. Not close. They're riding the success of the past. They can make a decent album, but one of their best ever? No. Not close.
I am still pondering their question of "Who do we think we are" ?😜🎶🎹🎶Play On
I tell you what I wish Gillan would sing my songs even at his age.
Hello Michael Noland I Hope You Have A Great Wonderful Day And Evening Blessed With Beautiful Accomplishments And Achievements Great Success Total Happiness Sunshine And Smiles That Will Allow You To Enjoy Your Life As A Happy And Successful Person In The World. May God Always Bless Your Life With Love Joy Happiness Health Success Peace And Prosperity. 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Maybe they don't release any weird songs in this album. I'm happy with what I have heard so far.
Nice job on the third tune and fist. Second song has not melded in the stew pot for me just yet. Got tix for a can’t be beat outdoor concert with yes in August. A warm summer night in New Hampshire with my all time band. Yahoo.
As my uncle Ted would say. Live free or die mother fucker!!! Get it going!!!
The very best😂 u gotta be kidding me dudeee…I am from Indonesia, I think I am as knowledgable in terms of rock n roll who shaped heavy metal music as it is today…u reviewed on this album that could be the very best album is so hyperbolic and so marketalist mentally 😂
In tarile foste comuniste,DEEP PURPLE A FOST CEA MAI BUNA TRUPA ROCK
Thanx for the info Sterica!❤
Good Deal !
Check out the recent AC/DC concerts. They are still amazing with no backing tracks.
100% agree! as close as you can get to Mark II.
