    Well done, Kate! I hadn't laced up in over 30 years and finally decided to try it again. Arthritic knees and self teaching was very discouraging. Catch your starter tricks when I searched online for help was the best thing for me to remember the old rules and get back on the ice as if I never left it. Very grateful to you! Good work!

    There's only one place I know to ice skate and it's public so you can't practice any of the backwards stuff or you'll trip over someone's kid lol

    • @wompwomp5327
      @wompwomp5327 4 года назад +1

      nerdchelle IDK if this’ll work for you, but at the rink I go to I can practice the going backwards stuff for short amounts of time and the back of the rink as long as I’m following the flow of traffic. Essentially I just have to turn around and keep going ‘forward’ while facing the other way.

    Just came back to this video to go over stopping again- I *still* can't stop. I hack the inside edge a little along the ice, but my balance is good enough now to slow down using this technique. Its something I am working on....
    Technically, I understand what needs to be done but my body just wont obey the commands. LOL. Yesterday I explained to a new girl the stop shown in this video. She got it after two tries- perfectly! Talk about a bash to my ego. :-) But I can also see how far I have come from 8mths ago so I just need to keep going. Thats whats great about ice-skating, its so easy to see progress and that inspires you to keep going. Again thanks for these tuition videos!

      hey! i'm pretty late to this comment but i'm currently fifteen and have only started figure skating recently. this is going to sound pretty cheesy, but some really successful athletes have gotten later starts on their careers than being fourteen or fifteen. i reckon it's all right to do something you really like doing, even if you only find out what that is as a teenager.

    • @johanvercarre1632
      @johanvercarre1632 6 лет назад +3

      Of course it's never too late ! I'm even 48 and I just started seriously last April. When you're older of course you need more time, but I'm convinced you could reach the same purposes as the youngsters. And keep also this in mind : IT'S AT LEAST ALL ABOUT FUN YOU LIVE !!!

    I used to skate when I was a kid for fun in the winter and loved to skate. I'm almost 30 (though I don't look or feel it at all lol) and yes I admit it, Yuri!!! On Ice has sparked my passion for skating again. Luckily I can balance and move forward and kind of shimmy backwards a little. I have weak ankles and flat feet so it definitely effects how I skate. I'm doing ankle exercises to help strengthen them. I'm going skating tomorrow with friends and we're all going to practice your tutorials together. We will only work on the Marching, stroking, and stopping while we are there. If I do well, I will progress to backwards skating (as well as practicing the others in this tutorial) the following day. I will let you know how it goes!

    I just finished my second lesson ie less than 2hrs on the ice & I was encouraged to attempt all of these, except for the half swizzles.
    I am using the front toe picks (oops:) but good to have that pointed out as what not to do- Thanks cyber coach Kate! I look forward to your other videos.
    I think my coach is just glad I let go of the boards & began to "skate" across the rink without ending up on my butt. :-)
    I think learning to keep balance & to relax the whole body is the hardest challenge as without that, its hard to do these drills, although I managed & kept trying.
    I just wish I had a helmet though...and knee pads, maybe throw in a couple of elbow pads...& yes something for my shoulders.... basically everything I see the hockey players next door wear! Does that make me a wimp? ;-) because those figure skaters have no protection & fall all the time practicing complicated jumps & spins & just keep on getting back up- they have my full respect, even if see them does freak me out just a little....
    (BTW I love ice hockey- its amazing what they can do too).

    • @miltongarcia4219
      @miltongarcia4219 9 лет назад

      +Lisa Lalita Trew Wanting to wear protective gear, specially a helmet, does NOT make you a wimp!! I just started learning to skate too and wear a helmet with a full face mask. My daughters started their lessons and I wanted to help them and join them on the ice after the lessons. Wearing my helmet also encourages them to wear their helmet without being conscious of how they look (although i did buy a black helmet instead of the pink my daughters have!! =)Best wishes on your skating journey!!Keep up the good work Kate!!! Great lessons!!!

    • @lisalalita
      @lisalalita 9 лет назад

      +M Garcia
      Thx for the encouragement. I wear a skater helmet (yep, black as well) as I can use this for bike riding. I am going to buy a crashe.com beanie for when I have better balance on the skates. There is also a head band for girls/figure skaters which is worth checking out.
      I do have knee, elbow padded shorts which go under my clothes. It may give me a bigger butt, but better that than another broken tail-bone!!!
      Of course when I fall, I will probably hurt a place that 'doesn't have padding. LOL.
      Actually I have to get into practicing falling. I have only done this a couple of times, getting up off the ice is no prob.
      What I like about skating is that there is always progression & I am so much better than I was a few weeks ago, even if I cant do so many things...like stop, which is rather important, so that is my next goal :-D Good luck with your skating & great you are trying it with your daughters for encouragement.

    I always wanted to be a figure skater when I was little, but I was a very accident prone child, so my parents didn't let me lol. Unfortunately we don't live in Canada anymore and the nearest rink is 45 minutes away, and I'm in college now. So I don't get much time and it's certainly too late to learn to figure skate lol I can only do a few of these starters😅 great tutorial though! Immensely helpful!

    Just my opinion but this a lot for beginners. I can barely move across the ice. But I will keep the tips in mind

    Question: I began ice-skating since October 25th, but I never marched, I tried to glide right away. Is it okay?

      I did that too when I first started. I didn't ever march... You'll be fine(:

    At 4:20 - What is the difference between backward slaloms and alternating half backward swizzles? They look the same.

    Hi, does anyone know a way you could fix my problem? Whenever I skate, my feet turn inwards so my inner ankles nearly touch the blade or ice. Could I please have some help? Thanks

      ***** Thank you! I'll definitely try this out next time. Thank you so much for the help

      I always had that problem because the skates were too big. My shoe size is 6 and at the end i ended up getting size 3 rental skates and that fixed the problem.

      natalia v. Thank you for the help! My skates usually feel like they're a little to big, so maybe this could be the problem. Thank you so much!

      Hi, I used to have this problem when I used rental skates, but when I bought my own skates, they gave me more support and it became easier to hold my ankles up. Also, practice holding your ankles straight. This will definitely be uncomfortable, but as you practice you will build up your ankle muscles and won't have to worry about this problem anymore. Hope this helps!

      // Lyrically Try Lavigne them Tighter and around your ankles, the tighter it is the higher up on the skate the more ankle support you get

    ice skating is similar to roller blading. I've done both and you do really similar motions for both

      Yeah, it's very true, they are similar. When I first went to ice skate, I tried to remember how to roller blade, and it worked almost the same way.

    Is it too late to take figure skating lessons when I"m 16 (turning 17 in 2 months)... I started taking lessons when I was 10, but I stopped after 2 months :(
    I regret it so much now and I admire how graceful all these figure skaters are... I really want to be good as them, but I'm worried that I'm too late now...

      Your not to late! If you are interested in competitions they have special ones for people who didn't start when they were younger. I think it would be fun to take lessons :)
