- Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says Opposition leader Peter Dutton’s recent nuclear announcement has “turned everything on its head”.
This follows Peter Dutton revealing the Coalition’s nuclear plan, including the seven sites where they plan to establish the nuclear power stations.
“Peter Dutton confirming to us there seven power plants,” Mr Clennell told Sky News Australia.
“The most radical reshape … is probably Australia’s energy policy history.
“And confirming that it's now going to be a referendum on nuclear power this election.
“This just turns everything on its head.”
Solar- Made in China. Nuclear power station- Made in Australia. Solar Panels - last 20 years. Nuclear Power Station - 60-80 years. No one is talking about the waste from dead turbines and Solar panels..
Exactly & the fact these solar items are coming from cryna you can bet they will not last 20 hears more like 7 years then what do we do with millions of un-recyclable toxic panels??
But whatever you do, don't think about the storage of nuclear waste. Strontium-90 and cesium-137 have half-lives of about 30 years. Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,000 years. The oldest continous government/state in human history is considered to be The Republic of Venice at 1,100 years. So nuclear power proponents are betting on some form of government body (or private enterprise) to be around long enough to ensure that nuclear waste will be safely stored, monitored and managed for the up to hundreds of thousands of years that it will remain highly toxic.
@@dratz50 Can't we just repurpose it into a new type of cereal...?
@@dratz50 Spent nuclear fuel can be recycled to make new fuel and byproducts.
More than 90% of its potential energy still remains in the fuel, even after five years of operation in a reactor.
The United States does not currently recycle spent nuclear fuel but foreign countries, such as France, do.
There are also some advanced reactor designs in development that could consume or run on spent nuclear fuel in the future.
HOW DARE YOU speak facts.

@santoshrathod123 The true gauge to this will be the reaction by the private sector.
@@JamesWrigley-t8s what private sector? Didn't you watch the announcement it's going to be fully funded by the government and taxpayers.

I admire Peter Dutton having the guts to this forward,,,we have a nuclear plant in New South Wales that has been going for decades we haven't had any meltdown,,,cmon Australia give it a go all we want is lower prices and low emissions,,,
He shows more guts than Albenese and Bowen!😢
Just remove the ban on nuclear, and remove the subsidies for renewables. Let free market forces determine the best mix. Get the government out of the way.
Spot on! Simple and logical.
Exactly, well said!
The free market has given the Eastern States high gas prices. How's that working for you? In WA the Labor Government of Alan Carpenter made the gas producers leave 15% of production as reserves for WA consumers. Consequently here in WA we have low energy costs. The free market has it's place but a country's energy future and planning ISN'T one of them.
If you think that private companies will invest in nuclear power stations without a guarantee on returns from the government you also believe in santa and the tooth fairy.
State premiers standing in the way of this, might as well retire now gracefully. Labors renewable nonsense has made electricity unaffordable and that is now crystal clear.
Finally! Someone speaking clearly AND in Australia's interest.

Dutton must know the public will back this or he wouldn't do it. I am surprised Sky News is acting so perplexed. Most of our allied nations already have them.
Only some in Sky. Clennell is perplexed. Perhaps he doesn't belong on Sky Team
Labor premiers not lifting bans is political and not what’s in the best interests of the country. People need to move on from Labor and permanently. Needs to be a significant shift in the major parties.
You forgot to mention their Liberal counterparts also do not support lifting bans. You have also ignored the fact that it was John Howard who banned nuclear at a Federal level.
we have been waiting for this well done
Good on Dutton for having the guts to stand up for Australians. He has my vote.
Well done go peter dutton
Dutton is growing in stature. If people really listen to what he is saying, then he will be streets ahead of Albo. But are people really listening, or are they too busy getting their next selfie up on Instagram.
Dutton has said virtually nothing other than his plan is to have 7 nuclear power station sites. That's the equivalent me saying my retirement plan is to invest in Lotto.
Yes mate funny comments

Dutton making Electricity expensive, he says it is cheaper but NO COSTINGS AND GOVERNMENT OWNED BECAUSE NO PRIVATE BUSINESS IS NOT MAD ENOUGH TO OWN IT.

Where’s the costing for renewables ? Which are renewables every 15-20 years
Silence from Labor cause they don't know and lie to us daily!
Were we ever told by Albanese and Bowen, what the cost of their wasteful, need to be replaced wind and solar would cost, and onward into the future when replacement will be needed..
Well Andrew why are you banging on about costing yeah we know it’s not going to be cheap initially Have you been Questioning Albo and Bowen about when will our electricity prices stop going up and where and who is making money at the cost of our misery?
My Rising Power Bill's Don't Lie !
Albo didn't provide any details on the referendum. He just said "trust me". Has labor provided the costing of its renewable roll-out? Has Labor told us the cost of replacing solar panels and wind turbines once their use by date expires? Had labor told us how the redundant solar panels and wind turbines will be disposed? Or will that be someone else's headache.
Why are some Sky News reporters coming across lately as pro Labor when Labor still hasn't been transparent with their poiicies pre election and post election.

Irrespective of your position on nuclear, it wedges Labor massively now on energy policy. They need to actually show how renewables are cheaper, no more bullshit, put up or shut up.
Labor (and any other credible source of information on renewal costs) have shown renewables are the cheapest form of power generation and that nuclear is the most expensive. Have you had your head buried in the ground for the last several years?

good onya Peter, an opposition with some courage .... we are in for a real fight. Use the existing power lines instead of the blight on the landscape under Labor. The private sector completely failed at providing cheap electricity ...
Well done Peter Dutton!
Anyone questioning Nuclear in Australia, really needs to ask… “If Australia’s already exports Nuclear and accepts some of the waste back for disposal” what do we really have to lose??
We’re already mining and disposing of nuclear waste… just not getting any of the benefit!!
the thiefs and crooks are not going to like this all...
Where are the media questioning Labor over their renewables costing ?
Nowhere , only going on about nuclear costings , while wind ,solar , batteries, pumped hydro , more gas , more transmission , and replacing turbines and panels every twenty years all get a free pass...
It is time for the media to actually educate Australians about the real costs of the renewables pathway , both economic and environmental , which are actually far greater than nuclear.
If Peter Dutton gets the mandate to go by being elected then to all the premiers, move aside your day is done mismanaging our energy.
This is a political gamble, but it gives the electorate in Australia a very clear point of difference at the next Federal election!

I am so behind this long overdue move by the liberals. A move that will benefit every single Australian worker, business and therefore government. The states cannot be trusted with something of this importance for Australia's future. Go Peter (finally a politician with balls again with the national interest firmly in his sights) and don't take any woke crap from state governments both liberal and labour. Yay, Australians owning our power again. Not foreign interests. Get the $$ here.
Bowen has already replied with smug little stove pipe remarks. What he doesn't understand is that the government makes the laws. The government banned nuclear, the government can also unban nuclear
I'm overseas and I like what I hear. Go with SMR's. I think they are best suited for the Aussie situation. It's not going to be easy, but it will be best in the long run. It will take a tremendous amount of organization, and new industries not otherwise already operating in Ozzieland. But I think just the idea of strong independence is going to energize the population. With a lot of hard work and thinking it will be done. It is the next logical step in progress. I'm excited for you guys. Keep up the momentum.
About time. Vote labor out.
Peter Dutton for PM and get rid of useless Albo and clueless Bowen
Andrew Clennell can be a pushy rude cun in press conferences, but journalists like him are important for asking the uncomfortable but crucial questions of Australian politicians.
True. Pity he forget to ask about the cost of the "renewables" fantasy.
He does strain to contain his bias; gets very agitated in a single direction.
I’d be happy for Clennell to challenge costing on Labor’s renewables strategy too.
Australians are poorer for not having someone really competent to compare whole of life costs between the various power sources. There’s more to cost comparisons than just cost per megawatt hour. What about costs of grid connection, power plant construction, waste management and decommissioning costs? What about costing the non-zero risk of a fk up like a nuclear accident, where reactor meltdown events have occurred; these aren’t hypothetical events.
Except if they are Labor politicians
Why hasn't he pushed Albo and Bowen for their costing on the renewables fiasco we are all pay for now? The private sector is already pulling away their support so Albo, Bowen and Chalmers are once again out of their depth and lying to the Australian people.
Great stuff. Maybe Australia is going to grow up and join the real world.
The I love Dutton bots have been out in force on Sky for a few weeks.

About time should have been done years ago, TY peter Dutton, if we dont we will be left behind in the world,
Power, Telecommunications, gas, and water should all be Federally owned and controlled. Nuclear power is safe, efficient, and most of all cheap. Lets get this going, Labor, the Greens, and Teals need to be steam rolled for the good of the Australian people.

Finally a big picture plan. Vote 1 - LNP.
Clenell is a labor wokey, get him of sky, send him to the ABC.
Peter Dutton is a great politician. A great man who is putting his money were his mouth is. I’m voting for him. Federal owned and run nuclear power plants for all states and territories is required. State governments can provide or organise the green energy. Consumers can pay different rates for the choice of state green energy or federal nuclear energy or a mix from different types of generation sources depending on their political beliefs.
I’ll vote for Dutton Nuclear
Shouldn’t be hard to acquire the sites as they will be useless
Go Dutton build the plants!
Too bad Clennell didn't ask Albanese hard questions about unachievable, unrealistic renewable energy and the biased modelling and costings of renewables by the CSIRO.
