Nuclear power allows Australia to reach 2050 net zero ‘by another means’

  • Former speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop discusses the Opposition’s nuclear power plan, which Liberal leader Peter Dutton announced.
“There is now an option on the table that people want,” Mr Bishop told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“That is, you can reach 2050 net zero by another means and a means that doesn’t destroy the countryside, the forest, the birds, the sea and everything else that this crazy renewables-only policy does.
“It is feasible, it is practical and affordable, and that’s the proposition that Dutton put today.”

Bronwyn Bishop was clear, articulate, and got her point across well.
Stephen Conroy was talking in circles, and intentionally trying to obfuscate things, to confuse listeners so they got the impression nuclear was bad, without actually presenting any points that it is bad.

Lets just talk about costs in kWh per hour, because that is what we the consumer pays.
France which generates 70% of their electricity from nuclear reactors charges A$0.32 cents per kWh.
Thats after all the construction and the facilities are producing 24/7 electricity.
In Australia we generate approximately 70% of our electricity from coal and gas and depending in what state we live in are charged from $0.25 cents per kWh up to a sky high $0.45 cents per kWh.
So try and tell me that nuclear is more expensive.
Lets just talk about costs in kWh per hour, because that is what we the consumer pays.
France is currently proposing 6-8 new reactors and worldwide there are proposals for approximately 300 reactors.

They also have the Snowy Pumped Hydro project that has run far over costs already and the drilling machine is stuck and cant be moved. All this is massively more expensive than a nuclear power station that will provide 24/7 consistent and stable electricity whole the Snowy Pumped Hydro will only provide occasional power after consuming a massive amount of power to pump water up hill again. That power will have to be paid for and the people of Australia will have to pay for that inefficiency. Labor are lunatics if the think renewables will ever provide cheap and stable power.

What you aren't mentioning is that 'renewables' hurt children in poor countries.
To me, that's the worst part of it, not so much (but I do agree) with the destruction of forest, large spaces cleared and covered, the cost for the inefficiency etc.
The human cost I care about. If you don't mention it, which 'renewable' pushers aren't, you don't care, because it's not you suffering and that's low, that you should be ashamed of.

Coal has to go. Why, Because it can not be made idle without still burning coal in case its needed. Gas fired turbines can be ramped up and down or shut down if not needed. No different than a jet engine. SMR's will not cut the mustard, they are small for a reason, small means less steam and therefore less power. Victoria alone uses 41.5 GwH , QLD uses 50.4 GwH , NSW uses 66 GwH , SA uses 13 GwH, Tas uses 11 GwH A total of 185 GwH. Or 185,000,000 MwH or 185,000,000,000 Billion KwH.

Good thing that our constitution prevents any nuclear dreams that SPUD the DUD is having. Still don't know how Albo is going to dock his subs when Australia has laws and ban against nuclear powered ships in our ports. The country has all the fuel we need to convert to electricity, what is lacking is a government that has AUSTRALIA'S interest at heart.

It's crazy to expect all the technology instantly today. BoBo drives an "old technology" Tesla model 3. What features/ motor & battery technology does he want in his next EV. This is a time of fast change. Would he still wants old Lithium ion technology or if proven, CATL Shenxing Plus. The one that promises to be a revolution in energy dense EV batteries. that means 10 cars at a charge station at the same time would need 280KWh. That's a small town. Planning for the next generation of EV's, how is Bowen's plan taking us to a future that can cater for that, over & over. Detail required all around. We don't want to spend $1.5trillion to find it's inadequate for the EV'S we are being forced into. Is that Sun & wind $1.5t cost using the same modelling algorithms as Snowy 2's small $2b projections were made. Now headed for $13billion, 6 times the original estimate. On Bowen's record alone on ability to do accurate costings I doubt it. ( Right Bill Shorten?- the shadow treasurer that lost the 2019 election for Labor. As Bill said after he had invited BoBo to explain his budget in a news conference but couldn't . Shorten "that'd be right" election lost.the unlosable election of 2019 for Labor, destroyed by one incompetent shadow treasurer. Bowen & math's are just totally incompatible.

The idea of nuclear and renewable is silly. You can't spool up or stop a reactor quickly. You can with natural gas. Why hasn't he gone with natural gas plants, removing the bans from gas appliances and the renewables - that would be a guaranteed winner.
