It's hard to predict what will happen in the next 80 years but renewables will probably be cheaper in Australia over the next 25 years. After that it's possible that renewables will be even cheaper - the cost of solar has dropped 90% over the last 10 years, wind about 60%, batteries 80% down over the last 10 years. Based on contued rapid price drops it's likely prices will drop further in the future.

It's not that Australia can't build nuclear reactors - we don't need to. Nuclear is really slow, and has huge upfront costs that the government would have to cover. Renewables and storage can be rolled out much faster and don't need huge amounts of government support.

A nuclear power plant couldn't possibly be built before 2040. So according to Dutton's plan it's literally impossible to have cheaper power before then, meanwhile we'd have to pay interest on the construction costs, planning and preparation. And then maybe renewable energy might drop another 50% in price, continuing the trend over the last few decades.
I'm not big on Sky News, but this actually caught my attention. 1 small modular nuclear reactor has an output around 480MW and a run life span of over 50 years with minimal waste. That's basically minimum of 68 7MW wind turbines and being replaced with another 68 required 20 years down the track assuming they all produce power at peak performance continuously. Be lucky if half the turbines actually achieve 50% generation capacity so at least double that number to get near the 480MW mark. Just a reminder, Gladstone Power Station (a coal fired station) has a maximum operating capacity of around 1600MW and cost $500 million in todays money.
No mention of the NUCLEAR SUBMARINES and importantly WHERE they will be based. I would prefer this submarine money be spent on nuclear power rather than submarines.
Our nuclear submarines will be built and powered at the Osbourne construction site Adelaide. They can,so to speak, power around the seas, indefinitely. Of course, they will dock to refill supplies and change crews. Nuclear submarines power through our 200mile coastal zone, every week without incident. Their home base would be irrelevant.

When is the government going to send travel warnings to countries using nuclear power and have reactors? It's surprising we haven't been warned to avoid these places if they are as dangerous as the fearmongering suggests. The Labor, Greens, and Teals seem to imply nuclear power is a significant threat, but many countries with reactors are perfectly safe to visit. We need a more balanced perspective and less reliance on scare tactics.
I don't think that the point is that nuclear is unsafe, it's that a lot of people are afraid of it and it would take a lot of convincing to make them feel safe. It's safe because a lot of money is spent building them and keeping them safe. That's one of the reasons it's expensive.

It's possible that nuclear would be a viable option if considered on a 40+ year time frame, but it's much more likely 99% renewables with storage will be in place by that time which would make nuclear financially unsustainable because nuclear power doesn't like being switched on and off.

A shut down nuclear power plant due to a fault, would cause massive problems. Single point of failure. i.e. one single power plant. Small scale SMR being a slightly different case, needs to be further evaluated for emergency power only, however not for grid scale core dependency.

The only utilities company in Southern Ontario that charges 28 cents per kwh during peak hours is Toronto Hydro, even then those rates are only applicable between 4pm to 9pm. Rates between 9pm and 4pm range between 2.8 cents per kwh and 12.2 cents per kwh.

Nuclear power wont automatically lower electricity prices. If anything they could likely increase. Anything that further centralises the power grid will increase prices over time. Rooftop solar with electricity and hot water along with battery storage can address 90% of domestic power requirements. One is better off going off grid if possible. That then leaves industrial scale solar, wind and hydro and tidal energy, along with gird scale battery storage cover industry needs. These technologies are evolving so rapidly along with rapidly falling costs per kWh generated, that nuclear simply won't be able to keep pace. There's simply zero evidence to support brown outs since grid scale battery storage has been implemented and that is being rapidly increased also. I doubt Aust will have nuclear within the next 20 years. Beyond that time period is a wait and see. Much depends on population growth. Renewables would be in the order of 300 to 400 billion including grid scale battery storage. Possibly on the lower side if prices keep falling.

Lucas Heights is on a completely different scale to power generation. And a major problem that has been hand balled by successive governments is the issue of waste management. If they can't solve this problem at such a small scale imagine a dozen power stations producing tonnes every year. As always, we'll pass that problem onto future generations.

A nuclear power plant couldn't possibly be built before 2040. So according to Dutton's plan it's literally impossible to have cheaper power before then, meanwhile we'd have to pay interest on the construction costs, planning and preparation. And then maybe renewable energy might drop another 50% in price, continuing the trend over the last few decades.

I'm not big on Sky News, but this actually caught my attention. 1 small modular nuclear reactor has an output around 480MW and a run life span of over 50 years with minimal waste. That's basically minimum of 68 7MW wind turbines and being replaced with another 68 required 20 years down the track assuming they all produce power at peak performance continuously. Be lucky if half the turbines actually achieve 50% generation capacity so at least double that number to get near the 480MW mark. Just a reminder, Gladstone Power Station (a coal fired station) has a maximum operating capacity of around 1600MW and cost $500 million in todays money.

When is the government going to send travel warnings to countries using nuclear power and have reactors? It's surprising we haven't been warned to avoid these places if they are as dangerous as the fearmongering suggests. The Labor, Greens, and Teals seem to imply nuclear power is a significant threat, but many countries with reactors are perfectly safe to visit. We need a more balanced perspective and less reliance on scare tactics.
I don't think that the point is that nuclear is unsafe, it's that a lot of people are afraid of it and it would take a lot of convincing to make them feel safe.
It's safe because a lot of money is spent building them and keeping them safe. That's one of the reasons it's expensive.

It's possible that nuclear would be a viable option if considered on a 40+ year time frame, but it's much more likely 99% renewables with storage will be in place by that time which would make nuclear financially unsustainable because nuclear power doesn't like being switched on and off.
@@kevllo Technical advances are worth keeping an eye on but so far SMRs and molten salt reactors are completely unproven. Australia can't afford to gamble on them, but if they work out in the future we could consider taking advantage of them after they have become proven.

That's why they have grid scale storage and it's getting cheaper and cheaper and deployment is faster and faster. Yes there are risks for all options on the table. A shut down nuclear power plant due to a fault, would cause massive problems. Single point of failure. i.e. one single power plant. Small scale SMR being a slightly different case, needs to be further evaluated for emergency power only, however not for grid scale core dependency.
SMR Dont make sense to me. They're too small which is inefficient. If your going to build nuclear reactor power plants you would build them full size. 1600 MW.

Oh dear, solar panels are made from tempted glass, they will resist hailstorms on most occasions. The Australian standards regulation demands that solar panels must be able to withstand the direct hit, hailstorms with a diameter of 35mm. the good doctor mentioned that the first solar panels were invented twenty-five years ago and they failed, based on that assumption than you would be mad to fly aeroplane.

I live in the Greater Toronto Area and 14.1 cents per kwh is a close approximation of what I pay for electricity, averaged out between peak and off-peak rates.
The only utilities company in Southern Ontario that charges 28 cents per kwh during peak hours is Toronto Hydro, even then those rates are only applicable between 4pm to 9pm. Rates between 9pm and 4pm range between 2.8 cents per kwh and 12.2 cents per kwh.

He talks about 5MW nuclear stations, that’s too small. How many you will implement to get the required power. This guy is from nuclear power field, and so he will claim nuclear to be best. Australia requires 650 million kWh everyday and right now solar is providing them 91 million kWh everyday. The main issue with renewable is lack of storage. However, right now, huge amount of battery storage is coming out. Solar+ battery is cheapest, easiest solution for electricity. It requires no running cost or manpower and practically no maintenance except some cleaning and minor repairs. These last between 25-30 years. It’s easy to replace them after their life, in fact price of solar will be cheaper at that time. When you have sufficient quantity of solar panel, they can be recycled and get back 90% of minerals. Most of the newer solar panels are high wind and hurricane resistant. However, any damage happened can be replaced.
People talk about Australia has huge sources of Uranium. Australia has huge sources of everything. They have huge sources of Lithium, Nickel and many minerals. Australia could be the top manufactures of all chemistries of Lithium ion batteries. However, they only mine and send to other places so that they can make finished goods. They totally lack technology and business sense.

It’s a mix we next to spread the risk and renewables should be capped. Not over developed to compensate for intermittent power generation
Nuclear power wont automatically lower electricity prices. If anything they could likely increase. Anything that further centralises the power grid will increase prices over time. Rooftop solar with electricity and hot water along with battery storage can address 90% of domestic power requirements. One is better off going off grid if possible. That then leaves industrial scale solar, wind and hydro and tidal energy, along with gird scale battery storage cover industry needs. These technologies are evolving so rapidly along with rapidly falling costs per kWh generated, that nuclear simply won't be able to keep pace. There's simply zero evidence to support brown outs since grid scale battery storage has been implemented and that is being rapidly increased also. I doubt Aust will have nuclear within the next 20 years. Beyond that time period is a wait and see. Much depends on population growth. Renewables would be in the order of 300 to 400 billion including grid scale battery storage. Possibly on the lower side if prices keep falling.

Mount bi facial panels vertical, how many vertical windows do you see broken after a hailstorm, or side windows on a car. If you use posts the footprint is smaller than your van for 20 panels. Vertical mount no snow to clear and wash off pretty good with just rain. My 2790w array in overcast makes 780w x 4 arrays, clouds all day 15kw a day in Jan(or July in AUS). Adi discounted solar when the best panel was 12v 150w and cost $1600. Now a single $200 bi facial panel produces over 600w. On A farm you can mount rows of panels with room in between for equipment to run. We see every country in the world screw everything up in every department this will be no different taxing you to death while they do it, get your own power for 20k AUD, last time you bought a new car did you research your full R.O.I.? probably not so stop looking for it in solar and become independent. 10000+ solar build videos on RUclips so start watching and learning. I have my old power bill from 1991 it was $27 in Jan, so what will the bill be in 2040?

Nuclear is not for Australia. Every expert agrees. And it was banned during the Howard years. The energy output of Dutton's nuclear plants will provide only 3% of our energy needs, cost us billions, will take decades to complete and create tonnes of nuclear waste which must be stored for thousands of years. Add to this our lack of expertise and infrastructure and you have a cost blowout disaster, as seen around the world. The Coalition is now unelectable. This failed policy is a coup for Labor and highlights the Coalition's desperation in killing renewable investment.
I don't belive you. Australia has been operating a Nuclear plant since 1958. Australia is very capable of building and maintaining Nuclear generators. Lucas Heights is on a completely different scale to power generation. And a major problem that has been hand balled by successive governments is the issue of waste management. If they can't solve this problem at such a small scale imagine a dozen power stations producing tonnes every year. As always, we'll pass that problem onto future generations.

Solar panels failed! Tell this to 4 million Australian households who have installed them on their roofs, biggest per capita in the world! The world’s biggest solar plant has come online in China, capable of powering a small country with its annual capacity of more than 6 billion kilowatt hours.
If you think you can generate your own electricity cheaper than a thermal power station producing electricity on an industrial scale, you and the 4 million others are sadly mistaken. It is that high percentage of rooftop solar that is a negative feedback loop that continues to drive up electricity prices. Why do you think you get charged to put any electricity you generate back into the grid? Why do you think energy companies are going to charge you to store that electricity? Next there will be a solar panel tax too.
