‘Unbelievable’: Australia the ‘only nation’ to build nuclear subs with no nuclear industry

  • Australia is planning to become the “only nation in the world” which has ever operated and owned a nuclear submarine without a nuclear industry in the country, says The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan.
“All the other nations in the world which own and operate nuclear submarines have big nuclear energy industries,” he told Sky News host Steve Price.
“The idea we can do this without having any other nuclear industry is just one of the many sort of fanciful, unbelievable aspects of AUKUS.”

Snowy hydro 2.0 good thing, 12 billion on completion. producing 2000 GWH = 2 TWH annually.
1 nuclear reactor I think is still a good thing, costing 6 to 8 billion, producing 7 to 8 TWH produces 80 to 90% of the time, lasts 40 to 50 years
Solar rebates cost the tax payer around 1 billion dollars per year, approximately 2.6 TWH in total is produced by solar which does not work at night marginal when cloudy and panels last 15 years. To increase that figure you need more roof tops or more land.
As of June 2024, there are 59 nuclear reactors under construction worldwide. China leads with 25 reactors, followed by India with 7, and Turkey and Russia each having 4 reactors under construction. Other countries with ongoing nuclear projects include Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, among others.

Nuclear? sorry think you forgot to adress a few problems with nuclear:
    1. Human error and with the fast decline in intelligence this is sure to increase.
    2. Earthquakes- no control and truly devastating to structures no matter how well built.
    3. Waste - we already have a poor record on planning and dealing with that little problem and one look at the person who was working in the area in America that tells you how seriously that subject is taken!
    4. The most disturbing of all aspects - one little balloon with one little detonator and 💥and that is for the structure and the waste!

!. thats why they are using passive safety options now 2. Australia doesn't have big Earthquakes(like 9+, ours what 3?) 3. your sorta right on this but wrong too the waste produced by old school reactors is little compared to coal ash waste(its toxic and radioactive) and renewable have bad toxic waste as well, two if we went with liquid fueled reactors instead of solid fueled reactors you go from ~1% burn up to over 90% burn up with the liquid fueled reactors so even less waste and 4. err what? a dirty bomb? Don't think any nuclear reactor has ever been blown up(yet outside of war i guess) so not an argument against them

If we use Greg Sheridan’s analogy there would have been no moon landing or exploration of oceans, blood transfusions, brain surgery etc etc etc
If no one has ever done it before than woe is me it may never happen or could never happen…
Thank god we have people of faith and foresight or nothing would happen ever…

A nuclear reactor needs to be safe with no maintenance.
Because inspectors can be bought and funding can be cut.
Humans are too short sighted and given enough time safety standards will fall and funding will get cut and maintenance will not be carried out

Don't really have to have nuclear industry to have nuclear reactors can just import them, same with the subs should be just buying them its going to take to long to build them here to be worth it 2040s umm wft why bother...would need them in a few year to maybe early 2030s at latest..

We could have a state of the art steel industry and by saving all that land from solar panels we could plant pine trees and get a new timber industry for the housing market. SA and NT should band together and put the plant somewhere near the middle and start putting on our big boy pants and export our power and products to Wa and the eastern Australia. We have everything we need to prosper except cheap electricity

Why is it all about America? Our first sub and warship were built in UK and Scotland and so were other naval vessels since WW1, some have been built in Spain.
Was it all about UK, Scotland and Spain because we sourced naval vessels from those countries too?

    • @450tank
      @450tank Месяц назад

No, they are already a deterrent due to their speed and no need to surface to recharge batteries or enter a port to refuel, plus their endless range and ability to stay submerged for months at a time.
