I am in the comments right now to say the exact same thing. I am a data scientist by higher ed quals and job title/actual function. In short I am a data scientist with very little experience with Ubuntu and a hobby interest in Arduino and RPi. Recently upgraded my soldering skills. But my skill set gap has been in Linux. Hate to admit it but it’s intimidating despite an accomplished career and very respectable education in data science from a very well respected American university. But I never have been required to use anything based on Unix. So this particular awesome video has served as a bridge between my voluntary hobby and known gaps in my professional skill set. Now I have a very good reason (hobby) and very good intro (this channel). Long story short, “thank you”.

I just got an Orange Pi 5 Plus, and I'm learning how to spring it to life. I am studying your video with great interest. Thank you for your excellence. You asked for help regarding a very small screw size to fasten down an m.2 device. I think it could be the small screw size that is on the bottom of the POSTS used to fasten down an m.2 SSD. One day on my Asrock motherboard, while trying to remove the small screw from an empty m.2 slot, the post unscrewed with the screw still stuck in the POST. The POST has an integrated bottom screw that is a VERY small diameter. My motherboard has a lot of very small holes in the m.2 slots to accommodate all the different m.2 lengths.

I found a screw that just needs to screw in, and the flange holds it down. I noticed taking apart a RING doorbell. Their security screws holding the metal case are perfect. You might need the screwdriver that comes with RING. For the ssd, I flipped opi5 over and screwed it in through that. The flange on the screw catches it just right

Thank you for the great video. The OPI5 is the new kid on the block but there is already a lot of activity regarding OS choices, use cases, and documentation. The one omission is on-board WiFi but that can be solved easily with a WiFi USB dongle. One huge feature over the RPi is M.2 storage but getting the OS image onto a NVME SSD can be a bit tricky.
The 8gb OPI5 first came out with a price point of $85 but now has quickly risen to $145. Still a good price compared to the Rock Pi 5B or the Khadas Edge 2.

if you boot off a SD card, you can open a browser and use it to download the OS image file
once downloaded, right click on it in the file manager
a context menu pops up with an option to open the file in an "image writer" app
I used this to write Armbian to the NVME drive and it worked flawlessly
      good luck

The M.2 storage is a huge plus and the Rockchip SoC provides good support for Linux. I agree with others that it would have been nice to have onboard WiFi, but it's easily solved with a USB dongle. Overall, this is a great option for those looking for a budget-friendly single-board computer with plenty of power and features.

Orange Pi 5 and similar boards using RK3588 chips are much more superior to Raspbery Pi 4. Even the previous generation of RK, which is RK3399 was already superior, 3588 can be already used as a full-fledged desktop replacement for most of the tasks.
As for the WiFi and Bluetooth you don't need to sacrifice the M.2 slot - you can just find a USB dongle which is compatible to Linux.
And the las bit - you didn't need to flash the M.2 NVME drive with stock img you downloaded - you could have just clonned your SD card to it, using the same DD command. The only difference is that you would need to extend the SSD partition after that, to span all your 128 Gb drive and extend a filesystem, but that can be done with just two commands

3:12 True, however it's possible you could compensate for this by making a RAM disk. if you get say the 16gb or 32gb model you can have a script that copies some of your stuff from the micro SD into the RAM directly. In which case it should run faster than the SSD in theory, since RAM disk almost always beats SSD speeds. Whether that pans out in reality with the orange pi is a matter of trying it haha. Curious if anyone's done any sort of benchmark testing with this.

Been sing mine for 3 weeks or so and it's a great little board that looks to see great pick-up for both purchase and development in 2023. Whilst I too would have liked to have seen WiFi and Bluetooth, at the price being paid, less likely to be futured. You can get both using a USB adapter, so you can still use an NVME drive too. USB-C gives video out too, so dual monitor support is available. I suspect that down the line they may bring out a new model with wireless connectivity but the price will reflect this. Bearing in mind that it has been in users hands for less than a month, more devs are showing interest. Official support though is almost non existent. The M.2 screw thing is a real pain and Orange Pi should either redesign the holes or supply a screw as part of the purchase.

    • @czerro1
      @czerro1 Год назад

I'm still waiting to get mine, and will put it through it's paces, but from what I've heard and read, the utility of the NVME drive is fairly crippled by the PCI-E bandwidth. Such that it is only marginally better at best than any other media drive options.
If that IS true, then most people should just throw something else in there like the wifi/BT addon that is incoming, or do it themselves with a bridge to a supported wifi/BT card for their OS.
I know that's a downer, and it's worth testing to make sure, but everything on the spec sheet suggests that it's probably barely faster than any other storage solution.
I think realistically...this might be a bit of a hoodwink, as people will find that it's simply more useful to use the slot for wifi/BT. Since it will take some work and research to figure out how...people will just buy the upcoming wifi/BT M2 addon that Orange Pi will release.
Regardless...they kept the cost down on the board, and it's definitely impressive. I think the NVME slot is a dud though. It's essentially useless as a drive expansion, as it's limited at PCI-E 2. Most other media can support similar speeds. So, it's not a huge win. Then we get to what else we can put in there...and there just aren't very many options other than a wifi/BT adapter.
If anyone has a great idea, as to what the nvme port can be used for, please explain. It looks pretty bad on investigation though. I can't really wrap my head around this. If the chipset only supports PCI-E 2...why put an NVME port on it at all? Why pretend it is for anything other than the yet to be released add-on card?

    • @magusonline
      @magusonline Год назад

@@czerro1 oh damn that is good to now. So the speeds should be similar to the USB3 ports with an external drive?
That brings me a sigh of relief then, a smaller dollar footprint for me :)
As for why the nvme, it was mostly trying to keep the physical size of the whole setup as small as possible. My plan was to 3D print a case for it, with a VESA mount adapter so I could mount it behind my TV and use it as an upgrarded smart TV + emulation station

It should only be flashed when you either have to or need to update it! I'm not versed with the OrangePi but there was an option to set the bootenv and that's what you'll need to change. Also please use the "o" key in gdisk to create a new partition table, this will save you the deleting part... ;)

First off I’ve got to say your video is by far the best explanation of how to set up this OP! I just picked up the latest and greatest Orange Pi 5B and there are some differences that have me stumped. I’m trying to set up Homebridge and be able to boot from the on board chip instead of the flash but here’s the main problem. This new OP 5B doesn’t have a port on the bottom for the M.2 mentioned here 7:15. Trust me as now I have an extra new, unused card if anyone needs one. 😂 But instead of a 16mb SPI Flash that you mentioned here 13:25 there’s now a 256GB eMMC flash. So my question(s) is/are is it possible to but both the image to boot and the Homebridge image on this drive? Do I partition it somehow or just put the OP boot image onto it and use the removable flash card with the Homebridge image to operate try to get my smart home devices into HomeKit? It’s times like this I wish I knew more about how these things work. I appreciate any help or feedback.

I have an OPi 5 plus with 16GB for a NextCloud server, but I can totally see going 32 for that application, as add-ons can hog a lot of RAM. I generally think that people are better off overspecing their RAM if they can, especially on SBCs. SWAP partitions tend to burn microSD or SSD life up. If you turn SWAP off, you need a beefy processor. If you leave it on you need a big SSD to wear level slowly. But the best option is to buy a big RAM pool so SWAP is rarely relevant and none of your components face permanent wear and you can have almost indefinite uptime.

Wells , 32GB one is useful for compiling huge amount of project . Especially for low level program development like kernel and driver development where bigger RAM means more fast memory spaces to fill . 2nd use case i found is for disposable container purpose , more virtualization more work be done securely .

I guess that since this video is 10 months old the orange pi 5 has been upgraded to include WiFi and Bluetooth. I just ordered one from amazon and it states “Onboard WI-FI6+BT 5.0 module, WI-FI6 interface: PCIe, BT interface: PCM+UART” in the description. It even has external antennas for the WiFi.

It seems I'll be sticking to the Orange Pi SBC for future projects. Such as the Orange Pi 64, the Orange Pi Macintosh, or even going as far as the Orange Pi Power Book. taking these vintage machines and bringing them all into the 21st century. I can tell you, these machines are going to turn some heads with the ability to play modern games.

Doesn't it make more sense to regenerate UUID on the NVMe drive instead of the SD card then you wouldn't need to worry about conflicts with any SD distribution? Not sure if that's more difficult or impossible but just asking..

It seems OrangePi did a good deal sticking to Rockchip SoC. It does make things a little bit better in terms of early on support. H3 and H5 community driven driver development for linux took forever. Allwinner makes good SoC but they only support Android fully. I'd say linux support is vestigial. They don't seem to be interested in higher performance Cortex models as well as they stick to Cortex A53/55 atm.

For low speed device, the "DD" test is correct.
But for fast devices, the "DD" test is incorrect!
Tested on many fast NVMe drives, the result is only ~1.4MB/s. Therefore, the final score is incorrect.

You can flash the NVMe drive any way you want (for example by putting it in a desktop motherboard) but you still have to install the NVMe compatible bootloader in the SPI flash memory. I do not think there is a way to do this (yet) without running something on the Orange Pi 5 itself (which means you must have an OS running, booted some other way e.g. from SD card).
