I bought m2 to 5x SATA adapter to my Orange Pi 5 Plus and made a NAS with 5x HDD - super nice and low power home NAS
can you put a link to the adapter? thanks
Love the way Orange Pi 5 can handle video so much better than Raspberry Pi. 4k is hopeless on Raspberry pi 5 at 4k.
Да. Но поддержка raspberry pi невообразимо лучше. И, без преувеличения, у него сотни всевозможных карт расширения
oh man, I had a terrible experience with the Orange Pi Droid OS. Everything was clunky and slow. The regular Android OS was much better for me. Thanks for the video!
the only android version support 120hz screen is older version android on SD card , 1.02 i belive, all orther version ( for sd card, nvme, ssd ) only 60hz , so i'm stuck with that old version ony sd card for now coz i need 120hz.
I was so hype to get one myself what ended to push me away, is the emmc and no spi flash module or an option to buy one with 1 spi soldered on. i can do it myself just don't want to risk it. overall the device seems to be fine on an emmc. but once u taste the nvme on a rasp 5 .. hard to go back on sd card to be fair. !! neat video. cheer.
great video.....ill stick to pis tho myself......this process is too much of a pain compared to a pi and it does not need to be, but this is why we buy pis......most others do everything half assed.
OrangePi 5 Plus has SPI chip soldered in from factory and it works together with EMMC.
Ohhh - so it's like all the power of an Orange Pi 5 (RK3588S) except raspberry pi sized. Very cool. By the way - looks like there's a dedicated fan connection to the left side of the GPIO. Probably requires a male micro JST.
Thank you for this video, which I've been looking forward to.
Think it interesting that they used the "S" variant of the chip with the faster LPDDR5. The S variant lowers the PCIe spec in both generation AND lanes out to the NVMe. Seems that the best combination would actually be to put LPDDR5 memory down on their Plus model as the RK3588 is compatible with LPDDR4, LPDDR4X, and LPDDR5!!! This just seems like an odd combination for them to come out with.
That's coming in the Orange Pi 5 Max. Non-S variant + LPDDR5 + PCIE Gen3x4
@@s.alizaidi6635 good call. I will buy the Max version instead :)
nvme works with the emmc or the spi flash. You need one or the other to boot.
I need an idiot proof tutorial about booting from nvme, preferably using emmc vs spi (I fear soldering). I am trying to add a pro to my kubernetes cluster, (along with various pis and jetson nano, etc) so ideally it would be a linux demo (ubuntu or debian).
Great video THANKS. Maybe a stupid question - will the Pro or Max run lets say Autodesk 3dsMax?
Its not software I have tried
Interesting to see this.
But why would I get one of these instead of a Raspberry Pi?
5x faster
In all honesty - you wouldn't. There is more to a system then specifications _and even computation speed,_ the reason I picked the Raspberry Pi 5 over any of its alternatives (in fact, I use it as my main system at home) is the software-support, how well rounded it is,… it just gives you much less headache when it comes to trouble-shooting. In short: The RPi is slower, but it works better. I had different “pies” in the past, and always regretted it sooner or later. So, if you want a better supported system, go Raspberry.
@@mediocreman6323 please define "better". If your only goal is "how many different flavours you can install on this board" then yes, RPi is "better". But apart from such "use case" some people use SBC for more serious cases (i.e. NAS, router etc.) - OPi5Plus has 2x 2.5Gbps NICs - add to it OpenWRT and you have perfect router. Or NAS. RPi from the very beginning was for "schools" - not for serious use. But both: RPi and Opi5 can be used for many things - if you need performance and Debian or Ubuntu or Arch are ok, you take Opi5 and you are done. Move OS to eMMc or NVMe and you have a beast.
It's faster than the pi5 but not 5X. Sadly, unless you want to run Android, you're better off with the Pi5.
@@mediocreman6323 You didn't mention the main benefit. waveshare site provides hundreds of expansion boards for raspberry pi 5
Yes, a really decent machine.
I can’t get the internet connected on my 5pro with batocera. No lan, no wifi, no Bluetooth. Still struggling with a fix. Must be a driver/build issue with the Opi5 ver. 37?
Please install Kodi & tell us is there VPU acceleration by default ? You never do this stuff which is critical for media transcoding
Can you do more with getting Twister OS to work on the ORANGE PI 5 B?
It hasn’t been worked on for years
Smaller, faster, Smoother, same old underdeveloped software. Orangepi are only box shifters where real software development is left to the community. The requirement to solder an SPI chip in order to use the M.2 is idiotic any more of an indication of amateur rather than pro.
I bought the Orange Pi 5, not 5B, last year.
I say this because in order to get Internet, I have to plug directly into Ethernet.
The 5 allows you to insert a wifi card into the m.2 slot, and this works ... If you exclusively use their Orange Pi OS.
If you try to use their boards for literally any other distro, you can't interact with the drivers or m.2 slot.
I bought their officially-licensed m.2 wifi card, direct from the Orange Pi Amazon storefront, and their own board just isn't set up to recognize the damn thing outside of a single use-case.
Orange Pi: "you're just happy you got anything to work on it, otherwise you'd have to consider mailing it back"
over android you can do some excellent full speed switch emulation
would love to see llama.cpp benchmark of this board vs the ddr4 predecessor as llm speed is mostly ram speed bottlenecked. if this is 2x memory bandwith it might do 2x faster token generation
Ordered the XM25QU128CWIQT08Q (at $0.86?!?) - will try soldering it. Thanks for the review.
Actually watching that again - it's quite impressive - seems alot faster than the Pi5. Have a Pro coming in the mail - should have gone with something higher than 4G
I need to order some of those spi chips myself. Orange does the same thing with their cm4s
On the verge of buying a Banana pi 5, either Plus or Pro. With this spi thing would you recommend a Pro, with emmc or a Plus with an nvme? I tend to lean to the latter, overall clock and ram speed aren't that important to me (until you miss it of course ;-), but nvme ootb sounds appealing. Also, 2 nic's on the Plus.
The plus is easier if you are intending to use nvme

@@Reactionnuvideoz01 I prefer the plus
PLEASE will you make a video on how to install Ubuntu to the NVME drive for the 5 Pro - all the video's I find gives instructions on first installing and running orangepi-config to change the bootloader, but on the Arch OS there is no orangepi-config, and I cannot build it manually?
@@pa6552 I don’t have the spi, so I can’t use nvme on my Pi 5 pro. I mentioned it in the video
@@leepspvideo OK, sorry, I obviously missed that part - do you know if the SPI is the only way to get the NVME boot working, or would you also be able to get the NVME working if you at least have an EMMC installed - ie, then you could install a bootloader to the emmc drive which then switches to the NVME?
Could you do a video on how to install the OS on to the Nvme.
I don’t have the spi chip which needs to be soldered in place. My soldering skills aren’t great
Hey leepsp have you tried winlator on an Orange Pi?
I haven’t, looks interesting though
How does the orange pi5 plus 32gb stack up against the pro?
I prefer the plus for being nvme ready. Performance is very similar as the same cpu is used. The pro has faster ram
@@leepspvideo Thanks for that! I ended up with the plus 32gb. Its my first sbc.
Good to see that they are finally putting LPDDR5 RAM Give me 5
Probably is most interesting to do some memory speed comparisons vs else Rk3588 who are on 4/x. Although...
On Plus there are 2 LPDDR4X chips, which suggests dual channel operation.
On this PRO, there seems to be only 1 LPDDR5 chip, which suggests single channel.? Sounds like this combo will ate a lot of perf from a GPU... if really is single, then that sounds like faster on paper, but in reality will be slower than Plus...
Trick sounds good for temperatures and idling wattages on a smaller board, but likely eat some perf, so...
if you or someone can clear this for me? theres no spi, but if emmc module is installed it can be loaded with usb and it boots from emmc? also it can/will boot from sdcard by default? nvme is usable but not as boot drive? or not usable at all?
Wirklich ein sehr interessanter Einplatinencomputer, aber im Vergleich zum Raspberry Pi 5 oder anderen Rechnern viel zu teuer.
It shouldn’t be expensive

I am desperate to figure out how to boot to any linux distro from nvme on my new Pro. It is not clear to me if I can do it from emmc. I dont have emmc or spi. The emmc can be ordered off amazon, but digikey does not even have the spi flash card and I don't want to solder anyway. I'm OK having the boot sector on the sdcard or emmc and then rest of OS on the nvme. I deally, I could buy the emmc, pop it in, have the boot sector there, then have it load the rest from the nvme and have the user partition there too. I want to add this Pro to my kubernetes cluster.
It’s easier with the Orange Pi 5 plus.
If you want nvme at al, it appears you need to solder the spi.
EMMC works fine with the dedicated one.

I'm using this for a diverse vm plus sbc kubernetes cluster demo so I wont be booting that much anyway, I mainly want faster iops. They used some strange terminology for the sdcard and for some other stuff. The spi flasher app is misnamed, it works on the SDcard as well. the fact that you can use either SPI or eMMc is BS - this Pro version is worse then Plus
That's what makes it "Pro", you necessarily have to struggle with it lol
Did I miss it? Does installing the SPI chip make it only able to use one storage (you have to desolder it to go back to emmc)?
Looks like it’s either eMMC on nvme. I would prefer nvme enabled by default
